Gripping murder mystery set in London, England
Barney Carmichael is an unconventional private detective who similarly takes on strange cases.
In this case, his client claims he is being trailed. A woman is murdered in her home, but the police have no leads.
When the murder weapon shows up in his client's house, and an accusatory letter arrives, the case thickens.
The story keeps you guessing throughout - sort of like an Agatha Christie novel.#
Recommended reading when travelling or on holiday.
    good detective novel
UK-based murder mystery - great characters (especially P.I. Carmichael) and engaging dialogue. I couldn't figure out who the murderer was, which is always a good sign in a whodunnit.
    Really enjoyed this novel

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
It's 1907 Los Angeles. Mischievous socialite Anna Blanc is the kind of young woman who devours purloined crime novels, but must disguise them behind covers of more domestically-appropriate reading. She could match wits with Sherlock Holmes, but in her world women are not allowed to hunt criminals. Determined to break free of the era's rigid social roles, Anna buys off the chaperone assigned by her domineering father and, using an alias, takes a job as a police matron with the Los Angeles Police Department. There she discovers a string of brothel murders, which the cops are unwilling to investigate. Seizing her one chance to solve a crime, she takes on the investigation herself. If the police find out, she'll get fired; if her father finds out, he'll disown her; and if her fiancé finds out, he'll cancel the wedding. Midway into her investigation, the police chief's son, Joe Singer, learns her true identity, and shortly thereafter she learns about blackmail. Anna must choose - either hunt the villain and risk losing her father, fiancé, and wealth, or abandon her dream and leave the killer on the loose.

    Wonderfully Researched and Delightfully Told
4.75 AudiobookThe Secret Life of Anna Blanc was such an unexpected surprise! It started out good, became better as it went along, delivered a punch, and ended with a sizzle. I dont think a mystery novel has ever made me laugh this much. Marvelously cheeky and delightfully inappropriate, The Secret Life of Anna Blanc exceeded my expectations and was anything but predictable.
Firstly, Anna Blanc rates 10/10 on the memorable character scale (something I just made up). My feelings for her ran the gamut during this audiobook, frequently swinging from chapter to chapter. She would go from annoying to amusing in a matter of seconds, but I never tired of her antics. Anna was a truly multifaceted character and an avant garde female protagonist, especially considering the ridiculously prudish ways of the early 1900s.
Kincheloe, a research scientist, definitely did her homework regarding the historical setting. Certain historically contextual details were so outrageous and unfathomable, that I knew they had to be fact. It took me a little while to acclimate to the uses of some specific terms and phrases, especially one like making love, which has come to mean something very different today. From what I could discern, it used to mean merely whispering sweet nothings. Oh, how times have changed.
Jennifer Kincheloe also won me over with her descriptive imagery. In example, saying a slap stung like sandpaper on a sunburn. Her writing easily painted pictures in my mind, though not always positive ones. At times, I sheepishly wished her descriptions hadnt been quite so vivid, particularly the graphic postmortem descriptions. However, I cannot deny the effectiveness of their impact on the story. Kincheloe proved that writing does not have to be complex or superfluous to be beautiful. There was something mesmerizing about the directness of her prose. It made the story incredibly easy-to-follow and enjoy.
Ive dubbed Kincheloe Queen of the fake-out for her ability to pull a bait-and-switch. I thought I knew where this mystery was going and I was fine with it. There was a trail of breadcrumbs leading in one direction, so followed it.

    Publisher's Summary:
As suspenseful as it is heartwarming, set in Jerusalem, the latest Christmas novel from New York Times best-selling author Anne Perry is the perfect holiday treat.
When Victor Narraway, Thomas Pitt's close friend and former boss, and his new wife, Lady Vespasia, travel to Jerusalem for a Christmas holiday, Vespasia cannot shake the feeling that they are being watched. Then, an old man leaves a mysterious envelope for Narraway - and is murdered soon after. But it is only when the couple is ambushed the following morning that they realize they are in grave danger. Armed only with the instructions from the message in the envelope, they immediately set out on a journey through the Holy Land while their unknown enemy pursues them all the while.
    Members Reviews:
Religious fantasy, not the usual historical fiction
I wish I hadn't wasted a credit on this. The characters include an angel, a dark angel (Satan?), a boy named Yeshua. Vespasian and Narramore spend most of their time philosophizing inside their heads. I just kept waiting for it to be over and wishing I hadn't wasted the credit.
    Stick to the drawing room
I like a good who-dun-it as much as the next person, but this book is not it. Its incredibly distracting, because the character responses are not realistic and there are quite a few slow spots.

This is the third Ashley Weaver book I've read. All are enjoyable and I like the characters.
I can recommend all three of her books.
    Don't bother
What disappointed you about A Most Novel Revenge?
The narrator. Very, very similar voices for each character.
What was most disappointing about Ashley Weavers story?
A rehash of the first book with a few twists. Author should start afresh with a new story line.
What didnt you like about Alison Larkins performance?
Distinguishing voice characterizations pretty much non-existent.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Get it over with.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the sequel to Zig Zag Girl, DI Edgar Stephens and the magician Max Mephisto hunt for a killer after two children are murdered in a tragic tableau of a very grim fairy tale.
It's Christmastime in Brighton, and the city is abuzz about a local production of Aladdin, starring the marvelous Max Mephisto. But the holiday cheer is lost on DI Edgar Stephens. He's investigating the murder of two children, Annie and Mark, who were strangled to death in the woods, abandoned alongside a trail of candy - a horrifying scene eerily reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel. Edgar has plenty of leads to investigate. Annie, a surprisingly dark child, used to write gruesome plays based on the Grimms' fairy tales. Does the key to the case lie in her unfinished final script? Or does the macabre staging of Annie and Mark's deaths point to the theater and the capricious cast of characters performing in Aladdin? Once again, Edgar enlists Max's help in penetrating the shadowy world of the theater. But is this all just classic misdirection?

    Publisher's Summary:
Slip behind the Iron Curtain into a world of smoke, secrets, and lies in this stunning novel where someone is always listening and nothing is as it seems.
Noah Keller has a pretty normal life, until one wild afternoon when his parents pick him up from school and head straight for the airport, telling him on the ride that his name isn't really Noah and he didn't really just turn eleven in March. And he can't even ask them why - not because of his Astonishing Stutter, but because asking questions is against the newly instated rules. (Rule Number Two: Don't talk about serious things indoors, because Rule Number One: They will always be listening). As Noah - now "Jonah Brown" - and his parents head behind the Iron Curtain into East Berlin, the rules and secrets begin to pile up so quickly that he can hardly keep track of the questions bubbling up inside him: Who, exactly, is listening - and why? When did his mother become fluent in so many languages? And what really happened to the parents of his only friend, Cloud-Claudia, the lonely girl who lives downstairs? In an intricately plotted novel full of espionage and intrigue, friendship and family, Anne Nesbet cracks history wide open and gets right to the heart of what it feels like to be an outsider in a world that's impossible to understand.

Good Road Trip Book For The Whole Family
Would you consider the audio edition of Cloud and Wallfish to be better than the print version?
It's a good audio version with the added benefit of having the German bits read to you.
    Any additional comments?
I loved this book! I actually visited Berlin (both West and East) a few months before the wall fell and thought the story really captured the unique Cold War situation and the energy in those last months. Nesbet does an excellent job highlighting the strangeness of the Cold War with a story involving two 10-year-olds that is both believable and yet tense. This is one of those stories that would make a good family road trip book because the story will interest all ages.
    Excellent Family book
Listened to this book with my 9 and 10 year olds who loved it. Great family book with an captivating story interwoven into the history of Eastern Europe. You can "taste" the history in this story which will open your kids eyes to the relevance of politics and government. Love this book. Starts a little slow. You can't stop listening after chapter 20.
