    Publisher's Summary:
It is May 1272, and Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal, recovering from a near-fatal winter fever, journeys to Amesbury Priory to visit her aunt in time for the Feast of Saint Melor. Although Eleanor hopes to regain her strength in the midst of pleasant childhood memories, death reveals a most troublesome fondness for her company.
A ghost now haunts Amesbury. Is it perhaps the spirit of a pregnant woman who drowned herself in the River Avon? But soon the specter turns murderous. A man is decapitated near the river where the grim figure walks, yet Sister Beatrice, Eleanor's aunt and acting prioress of Amesbury, shows an uncharacteristic hesitancy about taking charge of any investigation.
As others apparently fall victim to the vengeful ghost, Eleanor struggles to put a human face on the restless spirit, and Brother Thomas, pursuing a secret mission for the church connected with the priory's famous psaltery, finds that his own demons have unexpectedly taken on a very human form.
Corpses grow in number. Death dances with glee. All hope of sweet spring begins to die, and even love takes on a somber hue.

    Excellent as always!
I have read almost all of Priscilla Royal's Medieval Mysteries with Prioress Elenore and Brother Thomas, and am starting them for the 2nd time. This one is a particular favorite because due to the excellent character development, the angst suffered by most of them seems to be finally somewhat under control. It also seems that more mature logic is helping to alleviate the worst of the physical. I feel sure better days are in store for all of these religious.
but I enjoyed the author's notes the most
This is a well-mannered tale of treachery in a religious setting in the 13th century. We have no record of the speech of "everyday" people of that time. The characters in this book are remarkably well-spoken, calm and reasonable (excepting when drunk one presumes) but there's a real murder mystery here to solve. There's also a real sense of place and time and conventions of the day. The description of life in an abbey, and in a town closely associated with religious houses seems grounded in serious research and I enjoyed Royal's notes at the end of the book as much as I did the story.
Needs more mystery and less Eleanor/Thomas romanticism
    Medieval Mystery # 4
Slowly recovering from a nearly fatal illness, Prioress Eleanor finds herself interested in a suddenly appearing local ghost. When the ghost's appearance turns murderous, she and Brother Thomas step up their investigating, trying to prevent additional deaths.
Interesting if obvious plotline and side stories, and a truly impressive presentation of post-illness attitudes and medieval beliefs about the final judgment, but Royal is still harping on Eleanor's lust for Thomas and Thomas' homosexual longings. It's the old man-and-woman-can't-work-together-without-being-attracted line that I find extremely irritating; it just takes up space without advancing the storyline. The title was perfect.
Another rich mystery in this series
Prioress Eleanor and her companions, Sister Anne and Brother Thomas, have traveled to Amesbury, site of another house of the Fontevraud order, unusual in its structure that allows both women and men to live in the same priory, under the guidance of a female nun.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the winter of 1271, death stalks the corridors of Wynethorpe Castle on the Welsh border. When the Grim Reaper touches the beloved grandson of the castle lord, Baron Adam sends for his daughter, Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal, and her subinfirmarian, Sister Anne, to save the child with their prayers and healing talents. Escorting them to the remote fortress is Brother Thomas, an unwilling monk fighting his private demons.
Death may be denied once in his quest for souls but never twice. Soon after the trio arrives, an important guest is murdered. The prioress' brother, bloody dagger in hand, stands over the corpse. All others may believe in his guilt, but Eleanor is convinced her brother is innocent.
Outside her priory, in a world of armed men, Eleanor may have little authority, but she is determined to untangle the Gordian knot of thwarted passions and old resentments even if it means defying her father, a man with whom she longs to make peace. As passions rise with the winter wind and time runs short, Eleanor, Anne, and Thomas struggle to find the real killer.

    Here There Be Dragons
Priscilla Royal may be a new favourite author.
This is second in a currently 9-book series that features the clever, young Prioress Eleanor of Wynethorpe, and dubious new priest, Thomas who was given the choice of burning or God after being accused of the crime of Sodomy. His betrayer was the very man he had begun to develop feelings for. Oh, did I mention that Eleanor is falling in love with Thomas?
This story takes place in Castle Wynethorpe, the seat of Prioress Eleanor's childhood home. A murder is committed just as a visiting family begins to unravel. When Eleanor's brother is accused of the murder it becomes not just her duty, but the love that she bears for her family, that spurs her to find the truth. Brother Thomas is also there to help.
The history takes place in the rough times of the 11th century, and the author has woven a believable world, and memorable characters. This is my second book, and the two main characters are only built stronger, and more believable.
Eleanor is a woman, and despite a woman who is Prioress of her own world, Tynedale Abbey, she is just that, a woman. Although loved by her father she is still thought less of because of her sex. As Eleanor seeks the truth her father has to come to the realisation that his daughter is grown up, but that she is as strong, and as clever as her own mother was. Her father, Baron Adam, comes to see Eleanor is a confidant light, and he grows stronger in his pride of her. He gains new respect for her, and Eleanor learns that the love and respect she had long thought her father unable to give her he had, and he was able to face her as an adult, yet still as her father, and let her know how he truy felt about her.
Thomas becomes more settled in his ecclesiastical role but he still has not found himself in God's embrace. He is less rebellious, and more contemplative and that is due to those he meets at Wynethorpe. He seems to dislike the family's Confessor Father Anselm -- who is a big and smelly proponent of bad teeth, and awful hygiene.

    Title: Flight of Dreams
    Subtitle: A Novel

Length: 12 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-23-16
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 109 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
With everyone onboard harboring dark secrets and at least one person determined to make sure the airship doesn't make the return trip, Flight of Dreams gives an utterly suspenseful, heart-wrenching explanation for one of the most enduring mysteries of the 20th century.
On the evening of May 3, 1937, Emilie Imhof boards the Hindenburg. As the only female crew member, Emilie has access to the entire airship, from the lavish dining rooms and passenger suites to the gritty engine cars and control room. She hears everything, but with rumors circulating about bomb threats, Emilie's focus is on maintaining a professional air...and keeping her own plans under wraps.
What Emilie can't see is that everyone - from the dynamic vaudeville acrobat to the high-standing German officer - seems to be hiding something.
Giving free rein to countless theories of sabotage, charade, and mishap, Flight of Dreams takes us on the thrilling three-day transatlantic flight through the alternating perspectives of Emilie; Max, the ship's navigator, who is sweet on her; Gertrud, a bold female journalist who's been blacklisted in her native Germany; Werner, a 13-year-old cabin boy with a bad habit of sneaking up on people; and a brash American who's never without a drink in his hand. Everyone knows more than they initially let on, and as the novel moves inexorably toward its tragic climax, the question of which of the passengers will survive the trip infuses every scene with a deliciously unbearable tension.
With enthralling atmospheric details that immediately transport and spellbinding plotting that would make Agatha Christie proud, Flight of Dreams will keep you guessing till the last minute. And, as The New York Times Book Review said of her last novel, "This book is more meticulously choreographed than a chorus line. It all pays off".
    Critic Reviews:
"For her second outing, Lawhon once again reimagines a front-page news event, filling in the entertaining backstory with passion, secrets, and nail-biting suspense, this time taking on the disastrous crash of the Hindenburg in 1937.... Lawhon threads many stories together, connecting passengers and crew and bringing behind-the-scenes depth and humanity to a great 20th-century tragedy - even though we all know theHindenburg's fate." (Publishers Weekly)
"Ariel Lawhon has real vision and the writing chops to back it up. She weaves the voices and lives of the Hindenburg's doomed - and surviving - passengers together in intricate fashion, linking them at startling intersections that bind them into a single, riveting tale. It's a fascinating blend of love and murder, big dreams and betrayal, history and pure imagination - I could not put it down." (Sara Gruen, New York Times best-selling author of Water for Elephants and At the Water's Edge)
"Flight of Dreams enthralls, taking the reader on the doomed last flight of the Hindenburg with a story so vivid, it is impossible to pull away. Mystery, romance - it is all here, told in a mesmerizing tale." (Kate Alcott, New York Times best-selling author of The Dressmaker)

    Best of series so far!
I have enjoyed listening to this series. There is an interesting combination of history, interesting characters, and always a good mystery. But I believe this is the best one in the series so far. I think Victoria Thompson has hit her stride here, with this being a really good balance of characters' stories with action.
This particular episode involves the death of a wealthy man, and then-police commissioner Teddy Roosevelt asks detective Frank Malloy to handle this case personally. Naturally, he can't manage that without his friend Sarah Brandt finding ways to be where he is, and help him solve the crime. What I love about this particular book is the details. The history--of the Anarchists who terrorized wealthy people at that time, and the insights into the early movement for teaching deaf children to sign and lip read, are interesting. And I like that the author has expanded the characters somewhat to include seeing more of Sarah Brandt's mother, and little Aggie, a child she loves who lives in a mission. I see this as a good move for the books in the future (or at least I hope we'll see [hear] more of them in future stories.
A word about the narration. I have not felt until now that Callie Beaulieu has been the best narrator for these books. But I am happy to say that I felt her narration of this book was quite good. I'm not sure what's different, but the entire listening experience was very nicely done. I really enjoyed this whole book, and recommend it!
    on the edge
Fron the first chapter you are on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what is going to happen. This book keeps you captivated, and you can never guess who did what until it comes out.

    Publisher's Summary:
    A royal birth, a nobleman's death, and a scarlet woman's murder.
In March 1279, Edward I takes a break from hammering the Welsh and bearing down on England's Jews to vacation in Gloucestershire. The royal party breaks the journey at Woodstock Manor. There, one life begins as the queen gives birth to a daughter, and one draws to an end as apoplexy fells Baron Adam Wynethorpe.
Hastening to the baron's deathbed is his eldest son, Hugh, a veteran of Edward's Crusades who can't shake off the battle horrors he has witnessed. The baron's daughter, Prioress Eleanor, has already arrived to tend to her father, bringing along her subinfirmarian, Sister Anne, and the monk Brother Thomas. Awaiting Hugh is his illegitimate son, Richard, a youth filled with rebellion - and a secret.
The royal manor is packed with troubling guests, including a sinister priest, an elderly Jewish mother mourning a son hanged for the treason of coin-clipping, contentious and greedy courtiers, and a lusty wife engaged with more than one lover. Quite soon, the wife is found hanged. Prioress Eleanor and Sister Anne persuade the high sheriff of Berkshire that Mistress Hawis' death was not a suicide. In fact, many at the manor had reason to wish Hawis dead. And one of the suspects is Richard.
In her 12th novel, Royal once again "amplifies and deepens her series characters in the service of a clever plot that elevates her work to the top rank of historical mystery writers", as Publishers Weekly said in a starred review of Satan's Lullaby, the 11th in a series recommended by Sharon Kay Penman and favorably compared to Ellis Peters' Cadfael books.

    I just love this series!
The background story of Frank and Sarah is what has me hooked. I admit it wasnt an instant connection as of Book 1, but I have grown to love the characters and I cant wait to know what happens next in their lives.
Book 5 moved their story along nicely, but I wish it were a little faster!!! Of course the author does have to drag it out a little, we cant get their ENTIRE story over and done with in one volume we need a reason to keep coming back for more.
Being the impatient person I am, I want more and I want it NOW! I am diving into Book 6 right away.
    I love this series!
I love this series! I'm listening to them all for a second time now. I highly recommend them.
    Great Mystery-Victoria Thompson Doesn't Disappoint
What did you love best about Murder on Mulberry Bend?
I loved that there were a number of suspects and I was kept guessing until the very end.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on Mulberry Bend?
One of the most memorable moments is when I learned the truth behind the death of the spouse of one of Sarah's suitors.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I didn't care for some of the expressions of emotion.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I spread it out over a few days. Even though it was really interesting, I had a problem with falling asleep, then waking up later with my headphones still on, and had to search back to the last part I remembered. This was cumbersome.
    Any additional comments?
There was a defect in the audio output of this book, and I began hearing garbled voices in the background of the narrator during Chapter 5, then it quit working altogether. I kept skipping forward and discovered that the Chapters after that had no sound, until I reached Chapter 9. So I was unable to hear almost 4 Chapters at all, but I was able to figure out what I missed and finished listening to the rest of the book with no further glitches until the end. It was just really annoying at the time.
    Pronunciation
This is an enjoyable entry in the series. The narrator is usually competent, although her performance doesn't match how I imagined the characters. However, it was very jarring when the narrator blatantly and badly mispronounced a local street name, Houston, which was odd because other difficult names were correct.
    M on Mulberry Bend
I loved it! The saga continues and has kept me up late reading it! I look forward to the next book in the series.

Second book in series! Must read first book!
Brooklyn on Fire by Lawrence H. Levy is the second book in A Mary Handley Mystery series. It is April 1890 in Brooklyn, New York. Mary Handley is working at Lazloâs Books since her last case. Mary is also advertising herself as a Consulting Detective (for hire) and has an office in the back room of the bookstore (Lazlo loves that she is a detective and encourages her work). Mary is approached by Emily Worsham. She wants to hire Mary to investigate the death of her uncle, John Worsham. The catch is that John Worsham died twenty-one years previously. Emily pays Mary for two weeksâ work and asks her to send updates via mail (she does not live in New York). Emily believes her uncle was murdered and did not die from natural causes. Mary starts to investigate and there is more to this case than she originally thought. There are some people who believe the past needs to stay buried (along with their secrets) and will do what they can to stop Maryâs investigation. Mary wants to prove she is a good detective (better than a man and the police department) and will not stop her investigation until she finds all the answers.
Brooklyn on Fire is a good book, but not great (not as wonderful as the first book in this series). There is a lot going on in this book. Personally, I felt it was too much. Brooklyn on Fire is well written, has a good mystery, and a strong, female main character. I give Brooklyn on Fire 4 out of 5 stars. I just think the author tried to put too much in one book (I only summarized the mystery above).

    Members Reviews:
Wow! Just wow! This has to be Lucinda Brant's best
I adored this book, but it is difficult to review for several reasons. First, it is the third volume of the Alex Halsey Mystery series, and the first two books contain a lot of highly relevant backstory. Unlike some series, this one really needs to be read in order. Moreover, there are so many twists, turns, and surprises throughout the story that it is virtually impossible to write a thorough review without spoilers. (The publisher's blurb simply sets up what we learn in the first few chapters.) And finally, this book, and indeed the entire series, is so wonderful that I want you to read for yourself without any hints that I might throw out in my review.
One of the things that I have come to admire about Lucinda Brant's writing is how intricately layered her plots are. She reveals things throughout the story, which keeps the reader from becoming frustrated, but also holds back enough that the ending always is a surprise. She has the ability to deftly combine mystery and romance into one big delightful package that will please fans of both genres.
So rather than writing a typical review, I'm going to tell you a bit about the series and what I loved about this book, starting with the primary cast of characters who populate all three books.
Alec Halsey the younger son of the Earl of Devlin, Alec Halsey chose to make his living as a diplomat. He is a truly swoon-worthy romantic hero: handsome, intelligent, somewhat enigmatic, intensely honorable, and decidedly his own man. After the death of Alec's odious elder brother, Alec became the earl but he soon was elevated to a marquessate by the King in recognition of his services to the Crown.
Emily St. Neots a beautiful, spirited young lady whom Alec had once thought to marry, although he was not deeply in love with her.
Selina Jameson-Lewis the woman with whom Alec fell deeply in love at a young age. Her family thwarted their romance and forced her into a marriage with an older, cruelly abusive man. Selina is now a widow, but she an Alec have had to deal with some difficulties while rekindling the love that both of them still feel for one another.
The Duchess of Romney-St. Neots a redoubtable old lady who is Alec's godmother and also Emily's grandmother. Nothing and nobody intimidates her.
Plantagenet Halsey Alec's uncle and an outspoken member of the House of Commons, who despite his noble connections is something of a republican happy to offer his opinions freely.

Damballa.... a hero the people really needed!
Would you listen to Damballa again? Why?
Damballa from acclaimed writer, Charles Saunders, known for his groundbreaking work on the IMARO book series, that I highly recommend, gives the readers a hero who would give Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Avenger, The Spider, and The Green Lama a run for their money. And as a fan of the Black Panther of Marvel Comics, Damballa was right up my alley. In many ways, Damballa forsees the rise of superhuman vigilantes of color some thirty years before their appearance. And in a time when there were no known pulp heroes of color in print, Mr. Saunders is able to redress a serious and tragic incident in literary history. And as far as the story itself, Mr. Saunders could not have picked a more perfect period in race relations than using a very important boxing match (Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling) as the basis for an adventure that has international intrigue written all over it. And the narrator, Calvin Worthen, was skillfully able to embody ever single character he voiced and set the tone of the novel so well that you get caught up in that time period leading up to the Second World War. You did an outstanding job, Mr. Worthen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Damballa. He is proto-Black Panther in movement, and a master in tactical thinking. He's a master Chessmaster who think many moves ahead of his opponents. I wish he had existed back in the days of pulp literature. He would have been a force to be reckoned with.
What about Calvin Worthens performance did you like?
Everything single moment of the book was served well by Mr. Worthen's voice. He got into the time period as he described Harlem of the late 1930s, and as he voiced every character. His narration made me want a crossover between Damballa and Derrick Ferguson's Fortune McCall. That's how great of a job he did. Mr.

    Publisher's Summary:
For countless readers and listeners, Christmastime means a delicious new holiday mystery from New York Times best-selling author Anne Perry. A Christmas Escape, her 12th noel to the season, transports us to a Mediterranean island for an unconventional Yuletide adventure - and an unforgettable volcanic encounter.
Lonely Charles Latterly arrives at his small hotel hoping that the island's blue skies and gentle breezes will brighten his spirits. Unfortunately, there's no holiday cheer to be found among his fellow guests, who include a pompous novelist, a stuffy colonel, a dangerously ill-matched married couple, and an ailing old man. The one charming exception is orphaned teenager Candace Finbar, who takes Charles under her wing and introduces him to the island's beauty. But the tranquility of the holiday is swiftly disrupted by a violent quarrel, an unpleasant gentleman's shocking claims of being stalked, and the ominous stirrings of the local volcano. Then events take an even darker turn: A body is found, and Charles quickly realizes that the killer must be among the group of guests.
Captivating in its depiction of untamed nature in all its awesome power, and of the human heart in the throes of transformation, A Christmas Escape gifts listeners with Anne Perry's talent for making the season brighter - and more thrilling.
