    Publisher's Summary:
New York City, 1907. At the dawn of the 20th century, Americans believe that science, especially the medical sciences, will soon conquer all of mankind's ills. For a brief time, medical schools open their doors to women, allowing them to join the scientific crusade. Genevieve Summerford is one woman who answers the call.
After a past family tragedy for which she holds herself to blame, Dr. Genevieve Summerford wants nothing more than to succeed in her new career as a psychiatrist, and win back the respect of her family and peers. That goal is thrown into jeopardy, however, when one of her patients is arrested for murder - a murder Genevieve fears she may have unwittingly provoked. Desperate to prove to herself and the authorities that her patient is innocent, she is forced to enlist the aid of an influential Tammany captain who once worked for her family as a stable boy, and whose motives for helping her now are open to doubt.
Forging an uneasy alliance, the two uncover an astonishing secret about one of the city's most powerful families: a secret which, should Genevieve choose to reveal it, could bring down catastrophe on those she cares most about, but which, should she let it lie, will almost certainly send her patient to the electric chair.

strong heroine, a little snark & a dash of romance
    Any additional comments?
Genevieve Summerford was such an interesting character, and her past pulled at my heartstrings. She is passionate and truly ahead of her time. She has been granted permission to meet with a group of women who suffer from illnesses that Genevieve believes are a manifestation of their emotional state. All have suffered a significant loss. During her first meeting, she advises a young woman. Said woman is arrested the next morning for the murder of her doctor. Genevieve worries her advice provoked her patient but upon speaking to the accused, she is convinced of her innocence. Talks with the police soon have her convinced they believe they have their murderer. She decides to help, and the tale that unfolds was excellent and fully developed.
The book is rich with information as Genevieve sets out to investigate. We learn about diseases and get a sense of the political climate as we cross through different social classes. Overholt fleshed out the characters and highlighted obstacles Genevieve faced as a woman in 1900s. I found all of these tidbits fascinating and admittedly love this period.
The good doctor was refreshing, tenacious but level-headed. She is quite bright and while she makes assumptions she always follows up with hard facts. Her past and the need for her fathers approval hinder her, but we see her transform in this first novel. There is a second chance romance, and while it weaves its way throughout the tale allowing us to connect, it never hinders the investigation.
There were many ah-ha moments and things that happened that correlate to the way we do things today. I wont say as I abhor spoilers, but I can honestly say each made me smile and felt genuine. The mystery concluded after some climatic scenes and we even get a little follow-up. I was delighted that each thread and storyline was addressed leaving no loose ends. I am quite anxious to read more of this mystery series featuring our heroine.
Carly Robins narrated, and she did a terrific job with Genevieve. From her dialect to mannerisms she enhanced my enjoyment.

Love this book and this series! The only thing that I had trouble with is the narrator's American accent. TERRIBLE! But otherwise, the narrator is charming and I really enjoyed her. The story is a fun escape!

When newly single Annabel Hansen moves to the coastal town of Binz, all she wants is to leave her former life behind. Soon after settling into a beautiful home overlooking the Baltic Sea, she stumbles upon an old fishing boat in a nearby harbor and discovers another purpose: to convert the bullet-riddled Storm Rose into a floating café.
Yet there's more to this project than peeling paint and a bad engine. When Annabel finds an old letter from an East German defector who was smuggled to safety aboard the vessel, she and Christian - her handsome new business partner - set out to find its author. Together they'll unravel the Storm Rose's hidden past - and a shocking mystery that will change Annabel's life forever.
    Members Reviews:
I thoroughly enjoyed this German novel
Storm Rose is set in modern unified Germany on the Baltic coast with several extended flashbacks to divided Germany prior to the end of the cold war. The novel is about the unusual lives of the primary protagonist Annabel, the secondary protagonist and Annabel's business partner/boyfriend Christian, and the large, decrepit old motorboat named Storm Rose which Annabel and Christian purchase and upgrade to become a floating cafe. Annabel's 5 year old daughter by her prior marriage as well as her adoptive parents also play a major role.
Storm Rose, the novel, is about investigating Annabel's life history as well as that of the Storm Rose. It is a beautiful historical mystery, so do not expect any sustained intense suspense; it is not a thriller. I would listen to it again.
Do not use a credit for this audio book because it is much less expensive at Amazon with Whispersync for Voice and free to borrow with Kindle Unlimited.
    Wonderful
I picked up this audible having never read Corina Bomann.
I read the reviews and they sounded good. So glad i did. What a way to be taken back to a time when life was so uncertain and a young girl searching for answers as to why her Mother took off and left her an orphan.
    I highly recommend this title
Best book I've read all year.
I absolutely loved this book. So many different things coming together, so even though it's 37 chapters it held me until the end.
    Storm Rose impressive
I loved it. I'm not usually into historical fiction. However, this was so well done. Take place in present in Germany. Gives information of before the wall was constructed, during the period while it was up, and after it came down. Very interesting. I really recommend this book.
    Informative
I enjoyed the historical aspect of the story. Not much is heard on the subject of trying to escape from East Germany. The ending seemed abrupt.

The swashbuckling sequel to The Mark of Zorro (The Curse of Capistrano), The Further Adventures of Zorro sees the daring hero out for revenge once more. Villainous villains, heroic heroes, and damsels in distress are all brought to life in full sonic splendor. A lively and inimitably colorful reading by the stage actor Bill Homewood, who is well accustomed to adventure stories, having previously recorded The Three Musketeers, She, and the Four Just Men series.
    Members Reviews:
Zorro, Pirates, and Dons! Oh My!
The Further Adventures of Zorro is the sequel to Johnston McCulleyâs Zorro debut, The Curse of Capistrano. Spoiler alert for those who have read the first Zorro book â he gets unmasked at the end. So everyone knows who Zorro is. That eventually would chance in future stories of Zorro, but not in this sequel. Everyone knows Zorro is the young and dashing Don Diego de la Vega. /End Spoiler.
At the start of the book, Don Diego is out about town with a bunch of other young caballeros celebrating. Don Diego has hung up his mask and sword. Zorro has retired in favor of Don Diego getting married to the beautiful Lolita the next day. âI am done with roistering and adventure,â Don Diego says.
What could possibly go wrong, right? Well, that wouldnât be much fun to read then, now would it? Thankfully for us and unthankfully for Don Diego and his blushing bride to be, Captain Ramon makes a deal with a bunch of pirates to steal Lolita away and kill Don Diego. The pirates succeed in whisking away Lolita, and Zorro sets forth to fight the pirates and save his future wife.
Thatâs pretty much it for the plot. Itâs a straight forward pulp action novel. It does feel a bit repetitive at times. Zorro fights the pirates, gets captures, and then makes a miraculous escape on numerous accounts. Once or twice is fine for the genre, but McCulley was beating a dead horse with that motif. But to be fair to McCulley, The Future Adventures of Zorro wasnât written as a stand-alone book but was serialized for the Argosy All-Story Weekly. For six issues â May through June of 1922 â the story unfolded to readers. So the repetitiveness makes sense in terms of how it was being presented to readers.
Overall I enjoyed this story. It was fun to read another original Zorro tale and to have old familiar faces return on the pages. The villains are villainous, the heroes heroic, the damsels in distress (which is actually also a negative), swords flashed and flickered in the air, wind billows the sails of the pirate ships. Thereâs sword fights on land and on sea, daring escapes, and moments of dashing heroism.
My only real complaint is the repetitiveness of the story (which is a real minor one, especially in context of the publication process) and the fact that Lolita is little more than a plot device for the story. Thatâs not surprisingly either considering the genre and the era it was written.

    Riveting
This is book three in the Jack Lark series. I did not read the first two books in the series. I just plunged into book three. Paul Fraser Collard is a new author to me.
The story takes place in the year 1857 in Bombay, India. The story begins with Lark masquerading as a British Officer. He is discovered by Major Ballard, who is the Intelligence Officer. Lark is coerced into becoming an undercover spy. They are looking for a traitor who is selling military secrets to the Persian Army. The Persian Shah is moving against the British held territory and is attempting to capture the City of Herat. As the British Army prepare for War, Lark is attempting to find the spy. The battle scenes are good with lots of descriptions and action. Collard builds the suspense throughout the battle.
The book is well written and researched. The descriptions of the Indian countryside bring the area to life. The battle scenes are realistic. Collards writing style brings to life the story for the reader. I felt I was plunged down in the middle of the action. Collard sort of reminds me of Bernard Cornwell, but then again it might be just the British Army in India type of story. I am looking forward to reading more of Collards books.
The book is twelve hours long. Dudley Hinton does a good job narratoring the book. This is the first time I have listened to Hinton read a book.
    Fast moving intriguing tale

International best-selling author Lindsey Davis has done in the mystery genre what Caesar did in Gaul: came, saw, and conquered! Her innovative series put hard-boiled detective Marcus Didius Falco, "the Sam Spade of ancient Rome" (Publishers Weekly), on the mean streets of the Eternal City. Now Davis returns to AD 74 with a riveting investigation into a missing child.
Men are fools for love. And that includes Marcus Didius Falco. To please his beloved, the tough shamus has become Procurer of the Sacred Poultry (i.e., babysitter of the temple geese). It's steady work and good pay, but Falco is soon restless. So when a beautiful child, chosen to enter the secret order of Vestal Virgins, disappears, he grabs the case. He quickly discovers that greed and religious fervor are only a thread away from madness. And a little girl's life may be cut short, not by Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, but by a sinister human hand - unless Falco finds her in time.
    Members Reviews:
    Possibly my favorite Falco book
Finally, with Falco being elevated in rank, he has finally stopped fixating on whether or not Helena loves him. This is a marked improvement in his character. With this book, the series takes on a new tone. I hope it continues, Not that I didn't like the earlier books, I was just tired by book 10 of the Falco's insecurities and everything always going wrong for him. Now that he is a new man, shall we say, new adventures are available to him and the reader.
Falco has the voice of an old man!!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes the Narrator, Falco sounds as thou he is to celebrate his 60th birthday instead of a rough and tumble ex veteran
Who was your favorite character and why?
    falco
Would you be willing to try another one of Simon Prebbles performances?
    doubtful

I congratulate David Black for #2 of an elegant subsea series . Brisk, totally believable action. Lightly sketched characters. Somehow, the strategic and political background, the technical details and the crammed crew conditions are lightly blended into a novel of quality. I was immersed.

    Something lacking
A disappointment. The 2 different time-lines in the plot just never fit together, and there was no flow to the story. Honestly, the current-day characters were boring and unlikable. I would have preferred more about Grace, circa 1938, and less about Mina, present-day. There are so many better duel narratives out there ( I highly recommend "A Memory of Violets" ); pass on this one.
    The dead look after us
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Almost all takes place in a hospital where two women work about 70+ years apart and yet "connect" because of what has happened to each.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    No
What does Fiona Hardingham bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I found after starting the book that I didn't want to read it, I wanted to hear it instead. I'll probably be able to read it now thanks to Fiona's portrayal.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, While reading I kept wanting things to happen quicker, listening was easier to take the first time through.
    A Good Start
The story held such promise and in fact I had hoped for more. I loved the interactions between Grace, the ghost and Nina and wish there had been more. It seemed a long time to tell the story. While I am glad that I listened to the story I somehow long for there to have been more.
    Well written but just OK
An OK story, told from 2 different perspectives, belonging to 2 different time periods. I enjoyed both stories on their own - one more than the other - but didn't see a lot of point in their juxtaposition in this book. Grace's story, set in the '30s, felt more interesting to me. Whereas Mina got on my nerves with her "I was such a horrible person before I lost my memory" act. Ugh! What a cliché. I saw all of the twists coming a mile off but, to its credit, the book was very well written.
I don't think it'll stay with me for too long but I'm glad I listened to it. The narration is very good. No complaints whatsoever on that score.
    Loved this book!
This was a great listen . I love the books when two different eras come together and it was well read. Many Thanks !

    A Perfect Mystery Series.
I read this years ago and was so happy that they have been produced in audio. I simple love this series and have loved listening to them. Enjoying them anew.
The cast of characters are all so dear to me, and Lacey is such an great protagonist. He's flawed and stubborn and honorable, but you like him for it. It's a great world to lose yourself in. From high society to low, you are always on that journey with the characters.
A great mystery series, and I can't help but think it would make a great TV show.
James Gillies does a wonderful job as narrator.
    Best one yet!
The voice acting on this series is wonderful. Very clear distinction between characters, different accents done well, mood, tone, and emotion also all very well done.
This particular story has been my favorite so far. I'm so happy we finally got to meet his daughter, wife, and the major. The story was very fast paced, almost from the first, and I truly didn't see the culprit 'til it was all laid out. Excellent story, and I loved the ending!
A Covent Garden Murder By Ashley Gardener
James Gillies is an amazing narrator, he switches from one person to another in an instant, love his performances in these books.
I liked the story , but thought it was not as intruiging as some of the other stories in this series.
    Don't miss this series!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! In fact, I have gotten several friends hooked on this series already.
Have you listened to any of James Gilliess other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I love all of his books. I have listened to him read all of the Captain Lacey series, but I have also listened to several of his other books as well. James Gillies is a terrific narrator. He is very talented at creating distinctive voices for each of the characters and he truly brings the story to life.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Ashley Gardner does a great job keeping this series engaging and fresh. She ups the drama in this story by involving Lacey's family and his backstory becomes a central part of the plot. If you are new to this series, definitely listen to them in order, as it will enhance your understanding tremendously to experience the characters' growth from book to book.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A chilling and spooky Gothic historical thriller reminiscent of Rebecca and The Turn of the Screw, dripping with the dark twists and eerie surprises that are the hallmarks of Edgar Allan Poe, from the New York Times and internationally best-selling author of Citadel.
In a remote village near the English coast, residents gather in a misty churchyard. More than a decade into the 20th century, superstition still holds sway: It is St. Mark's Eve, the night when the shimmering ghosts of those fated to die in the coming year are said to materialize and amble through the church doors.
Alone in the crowd is Constantia Gifford, the taxidermist's daughter. Twenty-two and unmarried, she lives with her father on the fringes of town, in a decaying mansion cluttered with the remains of his once world-famous museum of taxidermy. No one speaks of why the museum was shuttered or how the Giffords fell so low. Connie herself has no recollection - a childhood accident has erased all memory of her earlier days. Even those who might have answers remain silent. The locals shun Blackthorn House and the strange spinster who practices her father's macabre art.
As the last peal of the midnight bell fades to silence, a woman is found dead - a stranger Connie noticed near the church. In the coming days, snippets of long-lost memories will begin to tease through Connie's mind, offering her glimpses of her vanished years. Who is the victim, and why has her death affected Connie so deeply? Why is she watched by a mysterious figure who has suddenly appeared on the marsh nearby? Is her father trying to protect her with his silence - or someone else? The answers are tied to a dark secret that lies at the heart of Blackthorn House, hidden among the bell jars of her father's workshop - a mystery that draws Connie closer to danger...closer to madness...closer to the startling truth.

A beautifully somber story of justice... Imaginatively written and subtly plotted... A nicely layered tragic story w/ engaging characters easily invested... Wide imotional range and an enticing mystery... Narration was excellent in bringing out different characters and their personalities... Worth the credit...
    Excellent Book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Taxidermist's Daughter to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version so I am not able to say.
What did you like best about this story?
    The interweavings throughout the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did cry because of the unfairness of it all. I was shocked as well by the horror on both sides.
    Any additional comments?
I truly enjoy all of Kate Mosse's books. I am anxiously awaiting her next story.
    Very captivating,
reader captured the story line perfectly. really enjoy this author and will look for more
3 overall, because I'll never listen to it again
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the story, but I am not sure I'd listen to it again because the "tone"that the book is read in is too dark. That said, I don't think it was overly grotesque as others have written, and the story itself was very well written. The narration fits the Victorian period or there abouts, and the tale.
