A fast and furious ride

Filled with fast paced, rapid fire scenes, Let It Ride is a snapshot story of the Canadian-American drug scene. The characters are well-drawn and the pages will fly by in this noir telling of crime, drugs and cops. I have to admit that the style of the book reminded me of Pulp Fiction, which I found compelling. Any noir and crime fiction fan will enjoy picking Let It Ride up and giving it a whirl.

This is a fantastic book!

Let it Ride is definitely a "noir thriller" - which pretty well has included every type of bad guy there is - specifically the drug cartel and the biker gangs - not to mention one woman who is determined to make her life better and has absolutely no qualms exploiting others and stealing their cash if it will get her where she needs to get.

There is alot going on in Let it Ride and, at times, it feel as though the author was trying too hard to make his story "big, bad and dangerous". This is my major negative with this book.

The Masked Woman

Originally published as a serial in The Washington Post in 1921, this is another of Johnston McCulley's early costumed characters, appearing nearly two decades before The Domino Lady and The Black Cat. Like her future protégés, she brought beauty, brains, and sex appeal to the female vigilante long before they were popular.

Calling herself Madame Madcap, she wears a sexy evening gown, long black cloak with hood, and a black mask to cover her features. Appearing mysteriously, she recruits a gang of hoodlums to do her bidding, demanding complete loyalty. Then she sets them up for a fall, handing them over to the police with enough evidence to convict.

This was an interesting story from the very first. As with most of McCulley's stories, his characters are heroes who act outside the law, but for the good of society - or for a purpose, like Zorro. Though there are no gun battles or sword fights, we see plenty of fisticuffs. Madame Madcap's chauffeur and bodyguard is a huge, muscular black man, and her right hand man is a professor of anthropology, who is studying the criminal element of society.

Although there were numerous typos in the book, and the story was more a novelette than complete novel, it was well worth the price.

Hard Cold Whisper is a Dynamite Read

Hard Cold Whisper by Michael Hemmingson was a breathe of fresh air, yet a return to a time when books had dames, money, and double crossings. There is so much to enjoy between the covers of this book and everyone should be running to get a copy.

David Kellgren is a process server and is prideful of the fact that he has never missed serving papers to someone he is seeking. He will go into the roughest, toughest neighborhoods and get the job done. On one tough job he meets Gabriella Amaya, who is the caretaker for her rich, dying aunt. Their relationship starts with an attraction that escalates into a full-blown affair. But their budding love is not enough for Gabriella, as she wants the freedom that will come with the passing of her aunt, as well as the millions of dollars she feels she is owed from her auntâs estate. She sets out to seduce David into becoming her murder weapon, but David needs to be wary of his sexy, money hungry girlfriend, because things may not be as they seem.

I loved this book and will be looking for more books by Hemmingson. His writing style is tight and he doesnât waste a word as he brings you into a world you will hate to leave when the story is over. The feel of this novel is the same one who get when you read older novels that are now labeled as the classics. The double-crossings, the woman who will seduce anyone in her path, and the man who is led by his heart (and a little by his loins) is a story that has been written before, but Hemmingson puts a nice spin on it and crafts a story that is all his own and is more than enjoyable.

Highly Recommended.

Pitch perfect noir

Pitch perfect noir. This one doesn't rewrite the rules or anything, but Hemmingson hits all the right notes for a contemporary noir tale that spins deliciously downward for the main character. Tight, spare, compact. Modern noir done right

Not very good

I found the dialogue and thought processes of the characters sexist and anachronistic and the depictions of both the male and female characters demeaning. I wish I hadn't bought this audiobook. It would have to be a whole lot funnier than it is to make up for the endless chronicling of lowlife behavior. Tomlinson in the Doc Ford novels is funny and kind of nuts. Jeffty is just a sad case.

Humorous scifi!

Set in the same future universe as the much enjoyed Anne Manx series, rises this new tale. Maureen Barnett, a once famous singer and performer, is now lucky to be performing at a smokey dive. Sheâs constantly arguing with her teenage daughter, Holly, who she pretty much ignored as a kid as she focused on her career. But now she desperately wants that familial connection. Then Amelia Storm walks into her life telling her a fantastical tale of a song that grants the singer premonitions. Of course, Maureen doesnât believe her. Then her daughter goes missing and sheâs willing to give anything a try to get her back, including counting on the recently retired police officer Henry Powell.

This story didnât have near as much scifi flair as the Anne Manx series that I adore but it was still quite enjoyable. The dialogue was crisp and full of small jokes for the reader to catch and chuckle at. The characters were fun and interesting. Maureen really steals the show in this story. Sheâs got issues. Sheâs a bit of a diva, but a diva who had a breakdown not too long ago and realized that her baby daughter was nearly all grown up and she didnât know her at all. So she takes these small singing jobs at little restaurants, bars, and nightclubs (partly because sheâs still paralyzed by large crowds, but also so she can stay in one place and be a part of Hollyâs life). Sheâs not perfect but she is trying.

The rest of the characters have their flaws too and each plays off the other and that adds to the both the plot and the humor. Holly has a lot of anger towards her mom (and probably rightly so) but sheâs also being a bit of a spoiled brat. So I didnât feel too bad for her when things started to go awry and she went missing. Henry is bitter about essentially being forced into retirement but heâs still got something to give to society. Amelia floats into the story as either our savior with her magical song or as the crack pot that might still incidentally save the day. Itâs a great combination of character traits divvied up among these engaging characters. There is some light adult humor bantered around which should be fine for most kids and a family car trip.
