Publisher's Summary:
A young petty criminal, Lee, wakes in a seedy motel to find a bullet in his side and a suitcase of stolen money next to him, with only the haziest memory of exactly how he got there. Soon he meets Wild, a morphine-addicted doctor who is escaping his own disastrous life. The two men form an unwilling, unlikely alliance and set out for the safety of a country estate owned by a former colleague of Wilds named Sherman.
As they flee the city, they develop an uneasy intimacy, inevitably revisiting their pasts even as they desperately seek to evade them. Lee is haunted by a brief stint in jail, while Wild is on the run from the legacy of medical malpractice. But Lee and Wild are not alone: they are pursued through an increasingly alien and gothic landscape by the aging gangster Josef, who must retrieve the stolen money and deal with Lee to ensure his own survival. By the time Josef finally catches up to them, all three men have been forced to confront the parts of themselves they sought to outrun.
Part classic film-noir crime-thriller, part modern tale of despair and desperation, The Low Road seduces the reader into a story that unfolds and deepens hypnotically. This is a brilliant debut novel.

Great wordsmith
A gritty, sad and at times shocking tale. I enjoyed the authorâs use of language and also the novelâs cast of tragic characters whose flaws are entirely and at times delightfully exposed throughout the story.
The road to ruin
Chris Womersley takes us down the low road - the road to ruin. At various stages all the main characters have choices - the low road or the high road. The consistently make the choice that can only lead to pain and despair. The book is beautifully written, the locations are vivid even if they are ugly or desolate places, and the characters are fully fleshed even if the flesh is rotten. It is mix of road story and gritty crime but the story transcends genre to say something more about human weakness.
The darkness keeps spreading
If you close your eyes you cannot only visualise the desperation and loathing, you can actually smell it. Wild, Lee and Joseph, great characters, a little more Joseph wouldn't have hurt, a novel on his own.
Great book.
One of the best books I have read for sometime. Sad and challenging, with real characters and real issues. Worth reading.
Boring and Poorly Paced Australian Crime Novel
I picked up this Australian crime novel largely based on the cover tagline: "Winner of the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction." I read a ton of crime fiction, and especially enjoy writers from other counties. However, fifty pages in, I was really questioning whether or not I really needed to read this book. I gave it another 75 pages, and just set it aside for good.
The story revolves around three men on the downslope of life. Lee is a young ex-con on the run, lying in a seedy motel room with a suitcase with $8,000 and a gunshot wound in the gut. Wild is a morphine-addicted doctor on the run, a recent arrival at the same seedy motel after fleeing his family and the police. Their two fates become intertwined, along with that of the third man, middle-aged Josef, who vouched for Lee with his boss, and now has to track him and the $8,000 down and deliver some punishment.
All of this is perfectly fine as a setup, but the execution lies pretty dead on the page. I'm totally fine with dark, grimy, nasty stories, but they need to be engaging.
