#10 The Corpse Cargo - July 1934
Read by Nick Santa Maria and Robin Riker. Liner Notes by Will Murray
During his ferocious first year fighting crime, The Spider faced the most amazing array of supercriminals ever spawned. The Black Death. The Red Mask. The Tarantula. The Fly....Few were as memorable as the 20th Century corsair called Captain Kidd. She - yes, she! - embarked on a campaign of cruelty unmatched in pulp history.
It began with the torture-killing of a innocent young boy - a loyal member of the SpiderClub. The weapon employed was a knife with eerie electrical properties. Discovering the hapless body, Richard Wentworth vowed to avenge this insult to The "Spider's" power.
But Captain Kidd struck first! When a train roars into Grand Central Station, out of controland crashing to a brutal halt, authorities discover that everyone aboard, from the engineerand crew to the passengers, are cold corpses-electrified by a weird new weapon calledthe Green Fire!

Death by electricity
The power of electricity is used for mass murder by a woman who calls herself Captain Kidd. Like the pirate, she kills all the witnesses as she and her gang rob the dead. I had to check this was by Norvell Page as it differs to some extent from the previous seven books by him. Lots of action and suspense and some cruelty too as Wentworth and Nita chase the fiends from massacre to massacre and fall into various death traps. Like the 117 other Spider books, a good read, even 81 years later.
WOW!
I'll admit that when I first dove into the Corpse Cargo I did not have high hopes. Giving Richard Wentworth a boy sidekick did not seem to this reader to be in keeping with the dark maelstrom of madness typical of any of the truly great Spider yarns. Then I finished the first couple of chapters during which a sadistic gang of modern day pirates torture the boy's friends (all part of a Spider fan club), carving a skull and crossbones into the chest of one before murdering him with a knife thrust.
Whoa! That's heavy stuff.
And that's just the beginning of a Spider adventure that catapulted into my Top 5 Spiders of all time!
The action is heavy in this one, brutal, savage, unwavering and the modern day pirates, led by a beautiful and deadly sociopath who calls herself Captain Kidd are some of the most hideous villains the Spider has ever faced. This group has harnessed electricity and are using it to simply electrify passing trains and planes, killing all aboard, then looting the corpses. And, in the case of the trains, then hurtling the train full of corpses full speed into stations for the sake of inflicting as much damage as they can. The pirates' raid on one train load full of people is one of the best sustained, more gruesome action sequences in the history of pulp fiction, new or old, and it is one no reader will ever forget.
This one also sees the Spider and his love, Nita, surrender to the pirates, leaving them with only deadly decisions before them and no chance of escape. The action is heavy here, the emotions run high and you will be on the edge of your seat as you tear through the ebook.
This novel enthralls. It's as simple as that. Do. Not. Miss. It. My highest recommendation.
