The Callahan stories are really good. Each story has a moral at the end, and a really sensible way of putting it together. The characters are all likeable and the girls always seem to find themselves in some sort of trouble. Start with the first one and listen to them all, you will grow with them! Good for boys and girls!

Ok, I admit - I loved it

I have no shame in saying that I, an adult, loved this series. Wonderfully rich characters that I ended up caring very deeply for. There are a couple of character who are tragically predictable, but the story itself is a good read for anyone. When I finished this book (the third in the series), it left me wanting more.

My son just LOVED reading all three books in this series. They were very exciting, kept his attention, and left him wanting more! I am thankful we were able to get the last two before Christmas. They were great gifts!

Charming, hopeful, yet also often dark -- fine work

This book is about a girl named Bobby Lassiter, who has just turned 10 as we meet her. She is living in the California desert with her mother and her 20 year old sister. The depression is just around the corner, but this family knows poverty just fine -- they barely scrape by on the proceeds of the older women's knitting. The father, who was evidently terribly abusive (physically -- whippings of all three -- not sexually) left them when Bobby was very young. Bobby (full name Roberta) is apparently called Bobby because the father wanted a boy -- and, indeed, no one but her sister and mother knows she's a girl.

She meets a man on their property one night, who tells her he is really a horse, named Mister Boots. He too has been abused by his human owners. Bobby feeds and clothes him, and eventually takes him home. Events follow quickly from their. The mother dies. Mister Boots and the older girl, Jocelyn, fall in love. Their father, Robert Lassiter, returns and the abuse begins again. He wants Bobby to become a magician, just like him -- and she finds she is good at that, and wants to do it. They head to LA (Bobby dressed as a boy -- which her father still thinks she is), and become a successful magic act, despite Mister Boots's refusal to turn into a horse onstage. Bobby makes her first ever friendship with a girl her age: a similarly bereft Mexican girl named Rosie whom she meets in a sort of hobo camp. They meet their father's long time mistress -- or is she really his wife, and are they illegitimate? But then the Depression hits, and the money dries up, and things get worse and worse, until a final revelation and a final horrible act.

It's a charming and hopeful story in one sense, with a delightful narrator in Bobby. (Yet a real seeming narrator -- not a prodigy, for instance, and far from a perfect person.) Yet it is also quite dark -- the depression, the abuse, and a somewhat tragic denouement. Which I think means it's really pretty much like real life. A fine little novel.

Definitely young adult

Overall, not badly written and a good reminder that we need to be aware that kids who are abused sometimes are told and actually believe they deserve the abuse, that children always deserve someone to stand up for them and people are not always what they seem. This includes kids who appear to be different, strange, or have behavorial problems. They are often dealing and trying to cope with issues in their personal lives.

I do agree with a previous reviewer that the book is dark. The physical and emotional abuse were disturbing (stripping Bobby naked to whip her entire body or having her clothes pulled down by a stranger who begins to make advances to her once he finds out 'he' is a 'she').

So, I did not find this book to be sweet or a nice little novel. I think for a certain age group it might be appealing but the content is definitely geared to an older audience.

loved this story

This is one of our favorite books to listen to. Rusell Boulter is a great narrator; very entertaining and fun.

We loved the story, the characters and the narrator!

Fun but repetitive in parts

Great kid's book that is fun for many ages. I read this when I was quite young originally and went back to it in audiobook format because I was interested in hearing if the characters were the same as I remembered.

In general the story is fun, set in a slightly surreal version of 90s Britain and centres around a group of kids who look up to the legendary graffiti artist Scribbleboy. The language is very simple and stylised towards stereotypical children's speech which makes it easy to get into but might not be satisfying for some older readers. I found the caricature-like characters funny enough to stick with though.

My only real complaint is that almost every character has a catch phrase and whenever a big event happens they will all say them one after the other. On paper its fine because you can skim it and you get the amusement while not having to read it all. In audiobook though it gets a bit tedious, especially towards the end when there are 7 or 8 characters gathered together and several big revelations come close together. Also the physical book is full of Chris Ridley illustrations that really help the atmosphere which obviously you don't get here.

Boulter does a good job of differentiating the characters and never falters in pronouncing any of the invented words. Good performance and his accent definitely complements the setting.

Recommended for car journeys with kids, nostalgia or people who want a simple fun story and can live without more complex flourishes in the writing.

"The Girl I Wanted to Be" is a story of growing up, growing wiser and suddenly realizing life isn't always what you thought it was as a child.

A wonderful piece of fiction that encompasses the life of a young girl, coming of age as a teenager. Like all of us, she couldn't wait for the time when she too would be one of the 'cool teens' that she admired as a young child. But perhaps growing older has its consequences also, as she finds that the one person she loved and admired most had a lot more skeletons in her closet than one could ever imagine. The seemingly perfect life of her Aunt Betsi, the same person who was given the exclusive honor of naming her niece Presley, starts to unravel before Presley's very eyes as she seems to venture down the right of passage to young adulthood. Perhaps this seemingly cool, totally together woman whom Presley had looked up to her entire life wasn't exactly as together as she thought. Family secrets no longer remain secret as you cross over to young adulthood and sometimes you realize that the one person in the world that you thought was who you really wanted to grow up to be like, might not really be the person you want to end up like anymore.

A touching, realistic piece of work that not only somehow grasps the reader in its holds immediately, there is some mystical power that the author seems to have over you that makes you want more and more. I simply couldn't put it down, reading through the night until I finished. Perhaps because the author does such a wonderful job at not only making you feel as though you too are a part of this family and learning the secrets but because you suddenly realize that every one of us has had this experience when we suddenly crossed over to adult hood and realized that life isn't always what it seems.

Amazingly written. Completely gripping. This book could be enjoyed by young and old alike. A completely realistic, down to earth novel that reminds us how quickly our lives change when we take that right to passage into growing up.

Ruthie has almost survived her freshman year of high school and all of the sudden she feels more lost and confused than ever. She's realized that she is desperately in love with her childhood best friend, Perry. To make things worse, a new girl has started school and Ruthie is convinced she is perfect, and convinced that Perry will think so, too. In desperation, she calls her aunt, who just so happens to be a relationship columnist, and begs her for her secrets to attract boys.

As Ruthie gets closer to her aunt and the story unfolds, it becomes clear that some things are not always what they seem and that even people who appear to have it all together often do not. Ruthie learns several important lessons about the value of family and the variety of relationships of all different types. Along the way, Ruthie also gains more self-confidence and maybe even a few helpful secrets to help her attract boys.

Although parts of the dialogue in this book feel a little forced and don't completely reflect teenage interaction, it is well-written and very enjoyable. Readers will likely appreciate the realistic and contemporary events that fill the story, including a humorous shopping trip that ends in gushing about Ipex bras from Victoria's Secret. Hogan is very effective about getting her messages across without seeming preachy or overbearing, which is refreshing. In the end, PERFECT GIRL comes together nicely, and readers will likely be satisfied even if it does not exactly reflect what they initially hoped for.

This revelation is only met with desperation when the perfect girl shows up at school, and has eyes for only Perry. But Ruthie has something that the perfect girl doesn't: a New York City aunt who is famous for being the Love Goddess. With Aunt Marty on her side, Ruthie may just have a fighting chance after all.

Achingly funny and sweet, Perfect Girl is a treat to read. By no means does Ruthie have a "normal" life, but her thoughts, emotions, and actions are those that all of us recognize. Hogan's eye for teens is dead on, and her characters are humorous, yet very human. The book deals with more than just self image issues, giving it a degree of reality that will engage scores of readers.
