House is the first descendant of disco. While Black and Hispanic communities were jamming and party DJs spinning records, a new birth of rhythm gave way to music lovers from Chicago and New York in the form known as house music.

Developed in Chicago's underground dance club culture in the early 1980s, house music began as DJs spinning in the gay subculture altered the pop-like disco dance tracks to give them a more mechanical beat and deeper bass lines. As well, these DJs began to mix synth pop, dub reggae, rap, and even jazz into their tracks.

The first pioneers of house music were Chicago DJ and record producer Frankie Knuckles, Chicago acid-house electronic music group Phuture, Tennessee DJ and producer Mr. Fingers, and US-born, UK-based singer Kym Mazelle.

House music quickly spread to other American cities such as Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, and Newark - all of which developed their own regional house scenes. Today, house music is worldwide and continues to dominate most club scenes and has expanded beyond its subculture beginning.

Learning is something that happens everyday.

I recieved this audiobook at my request for my own unbiased review.

This is a standalone quick listen however there are a lot of facts and a lot of information within this short book. If you have not read The History of Hip Hop then you should and then listen to this. There are not a hand in hand books however you will learn that a lot of the music that came played off one another.

House music is something that I am not interested in because it is just way to much however this book explains the evolution of what we know today. There were some songs that I thought were disco however listening to this showed me why certain artist and what it means to be an artist. There are a number of artists mentioned that no one really knows about and that I sad. I am glad that Eric Reese is keeping the memory of these artists alive.

I enjoyed the narrator even though he is talking to me like a professor and not just a friend who seems genuinely interested in what he is reading. His voice just makes me think of a professor I had who would talk to me as though I knew nothing. I think he has a clear concise voice but still very monotone.

So much about music which dominates most of clubs

I liked this book very much. The book is full of knowledge about house music. The book provides nice background and historical overview of house music. Interestingly I did not know so much about music which dominates most of the clubs. This is nice opportunity to learn a lot about the house music. I liked to get to know something more about music I listen while clubbing and enjoying time with friends. So amazed how much there is behind the music we listen. Eric summarized information in a very nice, in easy to listen way. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in music. The narrator did a good job, provided a good voice. Anybody who likes parties, going out to clubs, listens house, disco, entertainment music, and DJs would find this book interesting. Good job Eric, hope to listen to more this type of work.

Bravo Chris!

Once again, Chris Akin takes me back to the past to take another listen to an album that divided a bandâs fan base. I have listened to certain songs on this album from time to time, and I would rather listen to this album than their 80âs period. Darker and heavier! After reading this work, I played the album from start to finish, and thatâs how I will listen to it from now on! Thanks for the new perspective Chris!

One word. Unreal!

You would think that starting a record label and promoting music was easy after reading this book. Believe me, it's a lot harder than described. But yet and still, the future music business executives will be impressed with the allegory's of Simmons and Ruben's tenacity to win in this industry. Because they are real life example of what it takes for a music executives to succeed. But you will be less impressed with their ability to do good, quality, detailed business. Eye opening reality checks come with this one. An excellent book to motivate a new music executive!

A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY

READ THAT BOOK TOOK ME BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Great book for not only hip-hop fans but all music fans.

Sometimes you read a book looking to learn a little more about something that you don't know much about and it fulfills all your expectations and more. This is that book for me. I don't claim to know much about hip-hop but after reading Def Jam, Inc. I feel like I definitely understand the early days of hip-hop much more. The instinctual madness of youth and rise to wealth and fame with all the crazy failures and successes inbetween.

The criticism here from one reviewer is unfounded. Sounds like a hater to me. In the end, the stories and research are solid and the writing is top-notch. Being a fan of all types of music this was not only a lesson in hip-hop but also in how the music industry has evolved and we get to see it firsthand through this fantastic book.

A must read for any avid fan or musician in the industry...

Get Your Mind Blown The Hickey Way

There is no greater way to reset your priorities than to listen to a Dave Hickey thread on art, culture, philosophy, politics, sociology and his unique personal reflections. What a tapestry. It's the original magic carpet ride.

From leaving Texas in the menacing shadows of his narcissistic parents to shooting the pier in the permanent California sunshine on a board named Milton Dave's memories evoke a palpable nostalgia like few others.

His essay on William Claxton looks at freedom from someone who actually experienced it, reflecting on cool and esthetics of the time, "If the cars of that era resembled the cars of this one-- I wouldn't be an art critic." Hickey grinds on "American cool" going all the way back to George Washington.

Joe Barrett, the narrator, is a campfire storyteller. I had so much fun listening to him, I'd be blindsided finding myself in tears. I didn't know the bombs were coming.

Smart, fun, enlightening, and entertaining. I can't recommend this highly enough.

MY PRIDE: Mastering Lifeâs Daily Performance. I loved and enjoyed this book. I met @alton2459 in Bikram Yoga East Harlem. I remember the first time I was practicing next to him. I felt his positivity and caring aura. Reading his struggles and lessons learned are inspiring. No matter where you come from and what others think you canât do NEVER STOP REACHING FOR YOUR DREAMS. I enjoyed the quotes and FOOD FOR THOUGHT both of which engaged me to discover myself deeper. A Very Special Self-Help Book that Encourages the Pursuit of Happiness

Alton White Fitzgerald is a great writer. This book is filled w pain, passion and teaches one how to pursue perseverance. I am truly inspired by the words in this book. It is so important for all those who feel somewhat lost in their pursuit of happiness. In addition, it is crucial for anyone at any age who is interested in being a part of theatre at any level!

This book will help one focus on achievement and not allow failure to cloud oneâs thoughts! Order this book ASAP. Itâs a very easy read and one of the most worthwhile self help books Iâve read in many years!

I am enjoying this book SO much! I think people from all walks of life will enjoy this book, but as an actress/singer myself, I am enjoying it all the more. It's so inspiring!

Spellbound!

Read "My Pride" immediately after receiving. It was a smooth, enjoyable and fascinating read. I was spellbound by his generosity of sharing his story and his life journey. His story is interesting and inspirational. I am touched and motivated by his discipline and professionalism. He gives us a peek behind the theater curtain to show the insights of the world of music and theater. His love for his family and friends...and especially his respect for his Mom is notable. The question section at the end of each chapter gave me pause for thought. I I highly recommend this book.
