Title: The Humorless Ladies of Border Control
Subtitle: Touring the Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar
    Author: Franz Nicolay
    Narrator: Franz Nicolay
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-02-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
In 2009 musician Franz Nicolay left his job in the Hold Steady, aka the world's greatest bar band. Over the next five years, he crossed the world with a guitar in one hand, a banjo in the other, and an accordion on his back, playing the anarcho-leftist squats and DIY spaces of the punk rock diaspora. He met Polish artists nostalgic for their revolutionary days, Mongolian neo-Nazis in full SS regalia, and a gay expat in Ulaanbaatar who needed an armed escort between his home and his job. The Russian punk scene was thrust onto the international stage with the furor surrounding the arrest of the group Pussy Riot, and Ukrainians found themselves in the midst of a revolution and then a full-blown war.
While engaging with the works of literary predecessors from Rebecca West to Chekhov and the 19th-century French aristocrat the Marquis de Custine, Nicolay explores the past and future of punk rock culture in the post-Communist world. An audacious debut from a vivid new voice, The Humorless Ladies of Border Control is an unforgettable, funny, and sharply drawn depiction of surprisingly robust hidden spaces tucked within faraway lands.
    Critic Reviews:
"A pleasing romp: punk in attitude but literary in execution and a fine work of armchair travel for those unwilling to strap on an accordion on the streets of Rostov for themselves." (Kirkus)

One of the Top 10 Favorite Books in my Lifetime - For Real
Full Disclosure: This book combines my two loves, indie/DIY/punk music and indie/DIY/Raw Travel. I've read a plethora of books and viewed documentaries about punk music and touring (Henry Rollins - "Get in the Van", "Another State of Mind") and I've read many, many travel books in my time, including the classics when travelogues were more in vogue (before EVERYONE who has ever jumped on a plane had a blog, Twitter or Instragram trying to replace the sacred experience of authentic travel with "bucket lists" of vapid destinations in an attempt to show their cool factor). This book ranks as one of the most entertaining I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time and I'm a voracious and very picky reader. Life is too short to read a bad book and this book has me wishing for two lifetimes. This aptly titled book has me flipping "just one more page" deep into the night and my only complaint is that it's severely killing my sleep patterns. No exaggeration, for me at least, t's that entertaining and it rings true (I've been to some of the same destinations as the author. Indeed, we missed crossing paths by a matter of months in some cases). The other places I've yet to visit are brought alive with a unique and well researched historical and everyday anthropological context missing in news reports and media today. The author is funny, depreciating, humble and in short, a great character to root for. His descriptions of life on the road for an indie musician, the colorful cast of characters and off the grid "destinations" are authentic, empathetic and thought provoking, not malicious or overly opinionated. This is seriously one of the top 10 or maybe top 5 best books I've EVER read and I've read hundreds by now. Get it, read it and be enthralled.. I may even read it again..

    Title: Emotional Rescue
Subtitle: Essays on Love, Loss, and Life - with a Soundtrack
    Author: Ben Greenman
    Narrator: Dan John Miller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-16
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
What songs have made up your life's soundtrack? Which have captured your every mood and deepest sentiments? Pop music, like no other form of entertainment or art, is capable of articulating our feelings, desires, joy, and pain. In a few soul-grabbing minutes, artists from every genre - from Little Richard to Lou Reed, Willie Nelson to Wu-Tang Clan, Sly and the Family Stone to the Rolling Stones - can help us understand our place in our own lives.
This collection of short, sharp essays by New York Times bestselling author Ben Greenman (Mo' Meta Blues), organized around a thematic playlist of songs, serves as a reminder of the lyrical power of songwriting and the sonic ability of pop to capture the human experience. Greenman's wit, insight, and honesty are as sweet and satisfying as the hits (and the deep cuts) at the center of each essay.

    Emotional Wreck...
    Any additional comments?
I was so excited about this book but was sorely disappointed. There were some good parts like the histories of the songs selected but often I felt like the author spent most of the time whining about not being able to hook up with various girls, whining about having to listen to his emotional friends (girls) go on about emotional garbage while not feeling compensated enough by being their sound board, and being sexist throughout most of the book. It is clear that the author loves music but there are some underlying messages about what men expect from women, about how men perceive women, and about how sexuality should function from a man's perspective that rubbed me entirely the wrong way. If you have strong beliefs that men and women should be treated equally this is not the book for you. Actually, I would not recommend this book to anyone even men! It was blatantly sexist. At one point the author even states that some women may find his writing sexist but he doesn't really care. The only positive I can give this book is that this man really loves music and the history of music. Beyond that it's a bunch of sexist drivel.
Playlist of Emotions!! Memoir of the jukebox
Must read if you believe songs hold sentimental value to life and circumstances (achievements, relationships, memories, death, etc.)
    Musings to Nowhere
There are a few interesting observations and reflections here, but at the end I was left wondering, "So, what's the point?"

    Publisher's Summary:
Mojo Magazine's book of the year.
The Hollywood Brats are the greatest band you've never heard of. Recording one near-perfect punk album in 1974, they were tragically ahead of their time.
With only a guitar, a tatty copy of Melody Maker and his template for the perfect band, Andrew Matheson set out, in 1971, to make musical history. His band, The Hollywood Brats, were prepunk prophets - uncompromising, ultrathin, wild, untamable and outrageous. But thrown into the crazy world of the 1970s London music scene, the Brats ultimately fell afoul of the crooks and heavies that ran it and an industry that just wasn't ready for them.
Directly inspiring the London SS, the Clash, Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols, The Hollywood Brats imploded too soon to share the glory. Punk's answer to Withnail and I, Sick on You is a startling, funny and brilliantly entertaining period memoir about never quite achieving success, despite flying so close to greatness.
    Members Reviews:
    Go tumble with them
I first came across the Hollywood Brats when their album was re-released in the early 90s and loved it.
I wouldn't say it was like nothing I'd ever heard but that's only because everyone has "borrowed" from it or borrowed from those that had borrowed from it...
So while most other bios document the rise and fall (and sometimes their rise again) their tale of being before their time and taking pretty much every wrong turn is more like a plane struggling to get off the ground with occasional hops into the air that inevitably see them crash back down.
The whole tale of dodgy managers, promoters, gangsters and canal boats is told by Andrew Matheson, the lead singer and one of the main songwriters. He tells it like a the energetic and witty raconteur he is and never strays far from Tony Wilson's sage advice "if you have the option of printing the truth and printing the legend, print the legend".
This all adds up to a thoroughly entertaining romp through the under belly of the early 70s music world.
    Funny mate, really funny
The young Andrew Matheson and his merry band of diddies have a high opinion of themselves and their talent (an unmerited and unjustifiable high opinion of themselves) he might still have that opinion now hes not so young but his story is bloody funny.
The Clashs Sandanista is a hilarious comedy album dont you know - we do now.
    Excellent
I must confess I had never heard of The Hollywood Brats and got this audiobook for its title and because I am a big fan of punk rock in the mid/late 70's and like finding out about how punk started.
This book is absolutely brilliant from start to finish, it has you cringing, laughing and most of all glued to the storyline.
Since listening to it I have been on YouTube and listened to some of the music, it's pretty good.
Also I have Some of The Boys early stuff and didn't realise "Sick on you" was a Brats song until near the end of book.
One of my favourite bits was when A couple of The Brats met Malcolm McClaren, Vivien Westwood and the early Sex Pistols along with Mick Jones and Tony James.

    Title: The Composer's Landscape
Subtitle: The Pianist as Explorer: Interpreting the Scores of Eight Masters
    Author: Carol Montparker
    Narrator: Carol Montparker
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-14-16
    Publisher: Amadeus Press
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Derived from a popular series of lecture-recitals presented by Carol Montparker over the past several years, The Composer's Landscape features eight insightful essays on the piano repertoire. Each chapter focuses on a single composer: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. Montparker uses landscape as a metaphor for the score, whether it's a well-tended garden of Mozart or the thorny thickets on a Schumann page: the topographical peaks and valleys, the circuitous melodic lines, the thoroughfares where all the voices convene, and so on.
The discussions include thoughtful suggestions for navigating these landscapes, which differ so greatly from one composer to the next, taking note of the essential technical and interpretive elements as well as the challenges for the explorer pianist.
As an actively performing pianist, lecturer, teacher, music journalist, and author of six other books on music, Montparker has the experience and understanding to guide listeners through these issues while elucidating the finer points. Woven into her text are excerpts from her interviews with world-renowned pianists, from Alfred Brendel to André Watts, conducted during her many years as senior editor of Clavier magazine.
    Members Reviews:
Wonderful for both musicians and non-musicians alike!
Although not a musician myself, one of the great pleasures of COMPOSERâS LANDSCAPE is that through the medium of Ms. Montparkerâs thoughtful, sensitive, and exquisitely crafted prose I can appreciate as well as enjoy her essays on the eight composers -- all towering figures in the landscape of classical music -- whose lives and achievements she discusses with both authority and, unmistakably, love.
While those who are immersed in the field will relish with deep understanding this book, COMPOSERâS LANDSCAPE is also an inviting read for anyone interested in classical music, the musicianâs worldview, and the creative impulse. Itâs also a fascinating opportunity to learn about the insights and musical experiences of Ms. Montparker herself, a prodigiously talented pianist, teacher, writer, and artist.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the beloved host and creator of NPR's All Songs Considered and Tiny Desk Concerts comes an essential oral history of modern music, told in the voices of iconic and up-and-coming musicians, including Dave Grohl, Jimmy Page, Michael Stipe, Carrie Brownstein, Smokey Robinson, and Jeff Tweedy, among others - published in association with NPR Music.
Is there an unforgettable song that changed your life?
NPR's renowned music authority Bob Boilen posed this question to some of today's best-loved musical legends and rising stars. In Your Song Changed My Life, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), St. Vincent, Jónsi (Sigur Rós), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Cat Power, David Byrne (Talking Heads), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Jenny Lewis, Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney), Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Trey Anastasio (Phish), Jackson Browne, Valerie June, Philip Glass, James Blake, and other artists reflect on pivotal moments that inspired their work.
For Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, it was discovering his sister's 45 of The Byrds' "Turn, Turn, Turn". A young St. Vincent's life changed the day a box of CDs literally fell off a delivery truck in front of her house. Cat Stevens was transformed when he heard John Lennon cover "Twist and Shout". These are the momentous yet unmarked events that have shaped these and many other musical talents and, ultimately, the sound of modern music.
A diverse collection of personal experiences both ordinary and extraordinary, Your Song Changed My Life illustrates the ways in which music is revived, restored, and revolutionized. It is also a testament to the power of music in our lives and an inspiration for future artists and music lovers.

Cool if you know all interviewed artists
I really enjoyed some of the chapters, like the one about Jonsi. That is because I know his and appreciate his music. I didn't know the majority of the other artists or their music and didn't connect with their stories.
I love All Songs considered because I discover and hear the music Bob tells me about. Without that context (the music!) there is not much left. The performance is not great either. Bob's voice on the show is great. Here it just sounds like reading out loud, quite unnaturally.

The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory is all about the hit track: who writes them, how they are made, their emergence into mainstream culture, and their relevance in today's society. In the First Verse, John Seabrook illuminates the history of pop and profiles Swedish producers, the late Mr. Pop, and his protégé, Max Martin. These two songwriter/producers transformed pop music into what we hear on the radio today with acts such as Ace of Base, the Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears. All talk! Needs audio examples.
I expected to hear examples of the chord progressions played. The complex descriptions lost me very quickly.
    Tough without the book
Very good presentation of difficult material. I am not a professional pianist--- just an old guy who plays for fun . I learned to play using the named note of the chord. As I played more I found I had to learn the Roman numeral system (I--V--etc). It was very tough to switch, and I go back and forth, using the numeral system when improvising and with songs in a key I don't play in very often. I had to read along with his book to really understand his message. Some great pearls in there though.
No tips here - just wasted time and money
Lost all credibility with mispronunciation of musical term in first 30 seconds. For the novice or intermediate this is a confusing litany of terms and patterns with no explanation or definition. Speaking from experience, some of his "tips" are common sense while others are ludicrously inappropriate .Plus, because the author has played in a band and, he says, has published some songs he proclaims himself well qualified to provide guidance. I know a dozen people, as well as myself, who've had published songs yet wouldn't pretend to be an expert at songwriting. Don't bother.

A whimsical guide to the conduct of a romance interwoven with the history of classical music, which is, surprisingly, not as nice as you might think....
The history of classical music is littered with murder, sadomasochism, adultery, bigamy, fraud, riches, poverty, nervous breakdowns, bizarre habits, gluttony and terrible, terrible toilet humour (Mozart was the prime exponent of the latter).
Classical music - nice? Not at all. Its the most immediate expression of mental and emotional extremes: often deceptive, sometimes dangerous and frequently a discomforting revelation. Just as the unsuspecting listener makes the connections between classical music and certain states of mind, so Swooning documents the all too human flaws in the lives of the great composers by loosely following the sequence of emotions as experienced in a love affair - one that doesnt work out, of course.
In this fully revised and updated 14th anniversary edition, Christopher Lawrence leads us through the listening experience, from anger and Beethoven to sadness and Tchaikovsky, triumph and Wagner and freedom and Mozart - its all here in this whimsical guide to the conduct of a romance, with some handy hints on how to make it more, well, harmonious.
