    Outstanding Musical Journey!!!!
Would you listen to Exploring American Folk Music again? Why?
Great narration, along with a good story. So much information, there are chapters, I would like to hear again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Being a lover of the Blues, I enjoyed learning of the blues roots, and how it has transformed much of America's music. I like Mexican music, as well, and enjoyed gaining a better understanding of how it has evolved.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Each chapter has it's highlights. I enjoyed re-living the birth of Bluegrass, and the musicans who put each of their interpretations to it. You just can't beat "Orange Blossom Special" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown".
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Folk music is alive and well in America.
    Any additional comments?
I really appreciated such an energetic narration about music in a way I had never heard it presented before. Mostly, we hear music that is presented and promoted by mass media. From this book I have learned that there are many musical styles which are regional and specific to groups. For example, in South Carolina there is a style of music called Beach Music with a corresponding dance called the "Shag", that I am familiar with. Each region and ethnic group tends to have particular styles of musical expression they relate with. The interesting thing is how this music blends and evolves between groups and regions. Some of the Caribbean islands favor Country and Western as it's most popular music. In Samoa you may hear Latin Dance night at the club. This has been a real nice journey into music from Folk to pop. Very well done job by the author and narrator. If you are a music fan and want to learn more about American music and it's folk roots - get this book!
    Exploring American Folk Music
I first have to say that this was simply a treat to listen to. This book not only laid out the groundwork for American folk music from its very foundation or roots, it put in the cornerstone as well. This was an incredibly detailed look at the origins of our musical culture as it is to this day.
Kip Lornell provided extensive research drawing from numerous examples along with at least three subsequent examples of the origins, styles, and evolution of each genre of American folk music. I was utterly impressed and learned a lot of nifty things about folk music and music in general that I didnt know before.
There were several musicians who may have easily been put to the back burner and been forgotten about during folk musics evolution or the Folk Revival.

Black Music is an audiobook about the brilliant young jazz musicians of the early 1960s: John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, and others. My father loved it!
OK but why all the hype?
After hearing Leroi Jones on Sunny Murray and the NYAQ's records, and reading little excerpts of some of his reviews in books on free jazz, I thought I'd pick this up and check it out. I did; it was OK; but not much more than OK. I felt like most of the information available here is readily found elsewhere, and that any new perspective he brings to the issues (meaning basically a black nationalist/radical one) is easily enough visible in other places--better to read Fanon or Malcolm X than to let that music play in the background in a jazz book like this one. If that's your taste you might be better off with John Szwed's book on Sun Ra. This book is OK though, and if you haven't already read a number of jazz books you might find it fresh and interesting--I simply didn't. Well written though.
    Politics and Art
Too often, Baraka is critiqued for his artistry or his politics alone--with Black Music, the floor gets opened to anyone or everyone with an opinion on jazz or blues music. Black Music is Baraka's smart, personally charged account of the forms and culture inherent to black music, and thus its political value as a testament to a nation within a nation. Reading Baraka's intimate thoughts on such a personal subject should be the sole impetus for the reader.

Length: 2 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-16-14
    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Ltd
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Jeremy Summerly tells the story of the Christmas Carol in England in these illuminating and delightful programmes.
The Christmas carol is as popular now as it was when singers celebrated the birth of Edward III in 1312. But the journey it has taken is unique in music history. Here Jeremy Summerly follows that journey from medieval times to the present day. It's a story that sees the carol veer between the sacred and secular, in a tradition that has always had one foot in the pub and another in the church.
The carol is an expression of seasonal joy in the coldest, hardest time of the year. However inefficient the heating system may be, the carol still generates warmth and positive nostalgia. Many favourite carols were actually written for children to sing, including "Once in Royal David's City". It famously leads off the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service broadcast by the BBC from Kings College, Cambridge since the 1920s, commanding a worldwide audience of several million. But has it left an imbalance in the appreciation of our caroling tradition? And why do carols remain popular and familiar to so many?
Illustrated with examples of carols obscure and familiar through the ages, and taking in numerous locations around Britain along the way, this is a history of the carol to bring comfort and joy.

A deep dive into Christmas caroling history
Jeremy Summerly did a ten part program on BBC radio on the history of the English carols and how they've evolved. They released an audiobook on Audible compiling the episodes. The history runs from the earliest medieval carols to the height of Victorian carols to our present day. I was fascinated by how international caroling has become with songs and traditions brought over from other countries. I enjoyed the story of "Nine Lessons and Carols" and how it became a BBC fixture, even during wartime.
    Music to my ears!!!
wonderful history of English Christmas carol from the point of view of a chorister, Delve into the early carols of England and wraps up with the Nine Lessons and Carols in Cambridge. I found the ending of the interviews very interesting.
This is not an audio book per say but a radio show from the BBC
If interested in Christmas carols this is the story for you.

  • The Guitar in America Audiobook by Jeffrey J. Noonan

    Title: The Guitar in America
Subtitle: Victorian Era to Jazz Age
    Author: Jeffrey J. Noonan
    Narrator: Jack Chekijian
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-28-14
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
The Guitar in America offers a history of the instrument from America's late Victorian period to the Jazz Age. The narrative traces America's BMG (banjo, mandolin, and guitar) community, a late 19th-century musical and commercial movement dedicated to introducing these instruments into America's elite musical establishments.
Using surviving BMG magazines, the author details an almost unknown history of the guitar during the movement's heyday, tracing the guitar's transformation from a refined parlor instrument to a mainstay in jazz and popular music. In the process, he not only introduces musicians (including numerous women guitarists) who led the movement, but also examines new techniques and instruments.
Chapters consider the BMG movement's impact on jazz and popular music, the use of the guitar to promote attitudes toward women and minorities, and the challenges foreign guitarists such as Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia presented to America's musicians.
This volume opens a new chapter on the guitar in America, considering its cultivated past and documenting how banjoists and mandolinists aligned their instruments to it in an effort to raise social and cultural standing. At the same time, the audiobook considers the BMG community within America's larger musical scene, examining its efforts as manifestations of this country's uneasy coupling of musical art and commerce.
    Members Reviews:
An adjunctive text for music historians
As is to be expected of anything published by a University Press, this is a well-researched, scholarly work. It covers primarily the mid-nineteenth century to the 1920's. The author designated this as the prehistory of the role of the guitar in musical form. It also only alludes to the physical changes made to the instrument as time and usage progressed. It was interesting to learn that the essential difference between English and Spanish guitars was not so much design as whether the strings were of wire or gut. Much referencing is based upon the periodicals of the early twentieth century promoting the mandolin and banjo, with the guitar taking least place. These periodicals were not only biased, but vested in promoting a given manufacturer. In the later years, these publications also lauded and promoted well-known performers of the day.
Once again, Jack Chekijian uses his professional expertise to keep the narrative from becoming boring, yet pacing the work so as to allow ease of note-taking.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Pa-dum-pum-pa-dum-pum - PUM!" Super Mario Bros. for the NES contains some of the most recognizable tunes in popular culture, and yet its safe to say that only a handful of people have thought beyond the musics entertaining surface. After all, what could possibly be art-worthy about an early Mario score? Or any early game sound for that matter?
In search of answers to these questions, Andrew Schartmann takes us on a journey from the primitive "pongs" of arcade machines to the complex musical fabrics woven by composers of the NES era. Where does that distinctly Nintendo-flavored sound come from? What sets NES music apart from its predecessors? And how has that iconic 80s videogame sound "invaded" popular culture?

This book is a missed opportunity
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Granted, this is a short book at a low price point, but an audio format presented a prime opportunity to use clips of the tunes from the games being referenced to enhance the experience. The foreword even makes references to the transcription of certain scores, but those scores are not available in an audio format, despite the fact that the text (was altered to?) say "audio book" and not just "book".
    Great writing
Mr. Schartmann has some great insights into the music behind early video games and Nintendo. For more information, I would recommend his second book Koji Kondos Super Mario Bros. This book goes into much more detail about the music theory behind the NES games.
The performance by Kaleo Griffith does not do the book justice. Very disappointed in that.
    Interesting
I did learn a lot from Nintendo, and how they changed so much of the video game history, without Nintendo, we wouldn't have the music of now.
    Could have used example tracks
Loved the theory but could have used audio examples. Became a bit too droning without.

    Publisher: Random House Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Corey Taylor has seen a lot of unbelievable things. The Grammy Award-winning singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour's curiosity has drawn him into situations that wouldve sent most people screaming scared and running for the hills.
Coreys ballsy enough to go into the darkness and deal with the consequences, though. As a result, hes seen ghosts up close and personal, whether it be while combing through an abandoned house in his native Iowa as a child or recording an album in the fabled Houdini Hollywood Hills mansion. Hes also got the memories (and scars) to prove it. For some reason, he cant seem to shake these spectral stories, and that brings us to this little tome right here....
At the same time, being an erudite, tattooed, modern Renaissance Man, he never bought into the whole God thing. Simply put, hes seen ghosts, but he hasnt seen Jesus. Corey especially cant find a reason why people do the insane things they do in HIS name. Thats where everything really gets interesting.
His second book, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Heaven, compiles Coreys most intimate, incredible, and insane moments with the supernatural. His memories are as vivid as they are vicious. As he recounts these stories, he questions the validity of religious belief systems and 2,000-year-old dogma.
As always his rapid-fire writing, razor-sharp sense of humour, unbridled honesty, and cosy anecdotes make quite the case for his point. You might end up believing him or not. Thats up to you, of course. Either way, youre in for a hell of ride.
The outrageous sequel to Corey Taylor's Seven Deadly Sins is now available as an audiobook.

    Well worth it!
I own all his books in physical forms but hearing them read from the man himself is definitely worth it!
    Intelligent & thought provoking
A refreshingly honest discussion on the Paranormal which left me wishing I could respond! Well considered at at times humorous.
my first audio book. And what a listen! amazing.
I've never listened to a book. nor have I managed to read a book in full since school. im 34 now and I was genuinely transfixed with this novel.
Corey's voice conveys so much passion and conviction it's hard to stop listening.
as an avid fan of his music. I put a high bar for this book to reach. And it reached it. I would recommend to anyone.
Would recommend to those who think.
It makes a HUGE difference having Corey read to you himself (with that beautiful voice of his).
You can sit back and zone out to this book, whilst being made to think at the same time. The perfect ratio of story telling to learning.
    Entertaining, Informative and Gripping
This is the second audible book that I have purchased from Corey Taylor. As a narrator, he is easy to listen to and very engaging. The book is very funny, at times very Gripping and a bit dark. at times very light hearted and warm. Its a very well balanced book, Corey is very open about his experiences and is on a journey towards understanding, rather than being preachy and pushy with his beliefs (or lack of).

    Publisher's Summary:
Paul McCartney and John Lennon described him as the Beatles' "favorite group", he won Grammy awards, wrote and recorded hit songs, and yet no figure in popular music is as much of a paradox, or as underrated, as Harry Nilsson. In this first ever full-length biography, Alyn Shipton traces Nilsson's life from his Brooklyn childhood to his Los Angeles adolescence and his gradual emergence as a uniquely talented singer-songwriter. With interviews from friends, family, and associates, and material drawn from an unfinished autobiography, Shipton probes beneath the enigma to discover the real Harry Nilsson. A major celebrity at a time when huge concerts and festivals were becoming the norm, Nilsson shunned live performance. His venue was the studio, his stage the dubbing booth, his greatest triumphs masterful examples of studio craft.
He was a gifted composer of songs for a wide variety of performers, including the Ronettes, the Yardbirds, and the Monkees, yet Nilsson's own biggest hits were almost all written by other songwriters. He won two Grammy awards, in 1969 for "Everybody's Talkin'" (the theme song for Midnight Cowboy), and in 1972 for "Without You", had two top-10 singles, numerous album successes, and wrote a number of songs -"Coconut" and "Jump into the Fire", to name just two - that still sound remarkably fresh and original today. He was once described by his producer Richard Perry as "the finest white male singer on the planet", but near the end of his life, Nilsson's career was marked by voice-damaging substance abuse and the infamous deaths of both Keith Moon and Mama Cass in his London flat. Drawing on exclusive access to Nilsson's papers, Alyn Shipton's biography offers listeners an intimate portrait of a man who has seemed both famous and unknowable - until now.

A story of so many emotions
Having always believed that Harry N had taken his own life I was so sad to learn of his illnesses and prolonged demise at such a young age. I was not steeped in his music but the few things I knew and his animated film 'The Point' intrigued me. As a Beatle devotee I had also not realised how he was so intimately untwined with all of them. How sad life is that these innovators have such short lives (McCartney apart who is by now one of the grandaddy's of Rock because he survived everyone through - I suppose - moderation.
A great read i.e. listen,as I don't read these things anymore as I like the narration).
Interesting in parts but WAY to long
If you are looking for a detailed description of the music industry than this is the book for you. All I wanted was the personal life story of Harry Nilsson. I was never a big fan but truly admired his voice and writing ability and was interested in finding out more about the man himself. This book was long for me and to full of name dropping, gossip and "who's who" for my taste. I did finish the book and enjoyed most of it but honestly I wanted it to end long before it did. So unless you have an interest in the music industry I would't recommend it. But if the industry and name dropping is you thing, go for it.
    Good story
I wish there was more from him about how he felt but... Love his music!
    Super
