Finding her celestial father

Imagine your father died before you could know him. Add to that, that almost all you have are news stories and articles to know anything about him; that all you've had to hold near your heart are scattered photos, only one of him and you; that people tell you repeatedly how much you look like, and remind them of, him; that what you basically know of him is the near-mythic Southern tale, that he was an ultra-talented rock star lost so young in a motorcycle accident, just as his career was taking off, and thereafter became iconic for Southern rock 'n roll and dying young.

Duane Allman's daughter, smart as a whip, driven and artistic like her dad, started like this and decided to discover the man, the father, to know him, by talking to and getting to know family and his friends. Out of her journey comes her lovely, loving serenade, by which any human can sense through her lilt, her heart, her sadness and joy and her self-discovery.

A beautiful book read, as it should be, by the author.

Voice pro doesn't narrate his own book?

What did you like best about FM? What did you like least?

Liked the history and stories about the heyday of WNEW-FM and other rock stations around the country. The first few chapters are tedious - the book picks up once Richard is working full time at WNEW. Also, Richard's petty mudslinging gets tedious.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Edit out the first few chapters.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Why doesn't Richard narrate his own book? You would think a radio personality would read his own book. The narrator sounds like he's acting instead of telling his life story.

Great intro to musc history

If you could sum up The Story of Music: From Babylon to the Beatles in three words, what would they be?

I really enjoyed this book it gradually teaches you some simple music theory and how music evolved over the centuries in an extremely entertaining way, not dry and academic. It also teaches the language to talk about music which I didn't even know I was missing.

One criticism of the book is that some parts were hard to follow and were begging for an audio example - since this was a direct reading of a book this was obviously not possible.

There is a BBC documentary that seems to be a shortened version of this book, in fact some sections are identical and in the documentary he provides lots of examples of the techniques and details in the book - really brings the subject to life.

If you search on Youtube or Amazon for Howard Goodall you should be able to find them.

I gave it 5 stars as it got me enthusiastic for learning more about music and its structure not just listening to it.

Great book, look for the BBC documentary

Howard Goodall is great in all of his BBC work and now he has written this book. Really enjoyable to learn the components of music composition and find out when in (western) history each musical component/idea/approach was invented.

I wish I could purchase a version of this audiobook with imbedded audio samples of the musical pieces that he references in each chapter. The BBC documentary does a great job of playing examples as he describes the parts of the music to listen for.

It is not that I disagree with all the criticism that reviewer and other commentators have put forth. However, these are minor when weighed against the remarkable quality of the book as a whole.

Good information and well structured. My reservations were with the audio. How can a music guy possibly think it's a good idea to use that much reverb on an audio book makes me question his cred. The stilted read is more forgivable, but maybe the extra beat between each word is akin to double spacing your book report to make it seem longer.

All in all, I do recommend the book. I just wish I knew going in about the audio strangeness, just to be ready. Good ideas and insights, but really, reverb?

A Great book!

Concise and inspirational. It breaks down the key aspects of your inner songwriting skills, and highlights the good aspects of being a humble yet great performer. All in all, a good audio book for budding songwriters.

Pretty solid.

Very solid book. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basic fundamentals, or any seasoned song writer looking to step back and reexamine themselves and how to write. My only complaint was the reverb during the narration.

SHORT VERSION: Of the books on this subject, there are three that are much better than this one: Faces of Salsa, Salsa Talks, and the quintessential masterpiece of the genre, Ned Sublette's Cuba and Its Music. None of these is or is likely to be available in audio, so if you want audio, this is the best one out there - if you find a better one, please post it here so I can find out about it! I would also point out that these four books are all different and have surprisingly little overlap. To really get your head around the subject you should read all four and then some.

The book and narration have similar strengths and weaknesses. The book is well-written and handles the big picture well, but needs serious proofreading on facts. The narration is well-delivered and I prefer listening to it to reading the hard copy which I also own, but it too has serious proofreading problems - on pronunciation.

NARRATION: I am a serious student of Spanish but not a native speaker. About 70% of the time, this narrator's pronunciation, while it doesn't sound native, is better than mine, but the other 30% is embarrassingly sloppy and with all the Spanish courses I've gone through, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to hear him say "Antonio mahKEEN" (instead of maCHEEN) and to pronounce Valdés or Hernández perfectly one time and like an American baseball announcer the next. So that's why I say "sloppy" - it's not that the narrator is clueless - when he's good, he's quite good. But in a way, this makes it even more annoying that he didn't take the time to edit his errors. We all know that these narrations are done with digital audio that can be edited as easily as an email. Why not just have a native speaker listen to it and point out the errors and fix them???? Por favor!!! This book has Spanish words in nearly every sentence. It was ridiculous not to get a native speaker, or at least to have a native speaker identify the errors and to go back and punch in. That said, it's more than passable if you compare it to Tom Wolfe's "Back to Blood", which has the most comically horrible pronunciation imaginable. (noooo! que gym! oh my god, I'm getting nauseous just remembering that one - and it's such a great book ... grrrrr)

THE BOOK: It's a love-hate thing. Rondón is a very thoughtful guy and writes compellingly, making big, important observations well, but he makes enough factual errors that you have to be careful you're not mislearning things. For example, he calls Tito Rodríguez a "Cuban singer".

Good, Basic Hendrix Story

Sort of like "Jimi Hendrix For Dummies". Just enough to get a grip on his very complicated story. I'm sure there are more detailed biographies, but this was was enough for a casual fan like I am.

On a personal note - I don't think his music was worth all the drugs and alcohol consumed to create and perform it. Had he survived, I'll bet he would have realized he could have carried on sober. (this is NOT a statement on morality)

Fascinating biography for all roots music aficionados

I get turned off watching musician-related biopics if fingers do not match the performance...

I truly enjoyed this biography. Well-researched and detailed yet always relevant, respectful yet impartial, insightful and well-written by an author definitely in one of his field of expertise. An account fascinating enough that the narrator's Clouseau accent on French words takes a backseat to the story.

Guitar fans and jazz connaisseurs will love this book, but it should also please a francophile and pop culture-curious crowd.

You'll zip through it as fast as a Django chromatic run anyways. I'm going for a replay, alternating with the 40 CD Intégrale Django Reinhardt (Frémeaux & Associés) as a soundtrack.

Gypsy Guitar Legend!

Fantastic look at the the life of Django Reinhardt. Well written and beautifully narrated. Highly recommended for any fan of jazz guitar.

A Global Introduction to Film Music

As overviews go, this one's not bad. I think I had it in my head to expect it to be more Hollywood-centric, but it's bigger than that, covering music from China, India, Russia, etc. As a result, you get a wider view, but not as much information about any given part of it. It's nothing groundbreaking, but there are a few fun facts and plenty of interesting anecdotes to be had. All in all, it does provide a good launching point for further exploration, which should be the point.

Tried to cover too much with so little time

The first issue, with this book is clearly the recording, it's drone and boring to listen to. The second and much more important issue is that the author tries to cover way more than she has time to do. The history she conveys is so snapshot both in time and location that it reads more like a weird blurry mosaic than a coherent narrative. She also feels the need to talk about hundreds of lesser known composers outside of Hollywood who's impact on film music is arguably negligible, while completely (and what feels like deliberately) leaving some of the more important film composers out of her text. Unfortunately this is pretty much the only historical text I have found on the subject, too bad it is what it is.

A bit too short introduction

Some of these Very Short Introductions are quite good, but this one gets a bit too thin for me. The historical overview is too sparse to be enlightening, some of the basic nomenclature is missing, and there is no real introduction to the theoretical discourse. If you're interested in film music, I see no reason for not move directly to a more extensive account.

The first love is always the sweetest

Julia Crowe has compiled a sweet suite of seventy stories about guitars. Heavy hitters in rock, blues, flamenco, classical and country reminisce about their first guitars. And if you don't get nostalgic, you've never been in love before.

I knew this was going to be a good read when Andy Summers, guitarist for the Police, provided the foreword. Then Crowe took up the tale of how this book came together.

Her quest took her to London to visit the elusive Jimmy Page, only to be told he was unavailable. And the author had just sunk her last borrowed dime on this trip. She is told to go to a coffeeshop where Page may or may not show?

Will she get the interview? You have to stick around to the last chapter to find out. But the seventy stories stacked in between make you want to run out and drool over a Gretsch or your ax of choice.

The guitarists give their stories in their own words. That's why there is more than one narrator to provide voices for this varied asemblage. Crowe scored interviews with big names and lesser knowns with a huge impact, and you don't have to know anything about guitars or care to understand these tales of first guitars and finding one's path in life.

Zane Sanchezs animated performance captures the fan-like enthusiasm of Moores prose, and his voice is as easy on the ear as a Top 40 hit.

Wasn't able to get through 5 mins of it. So I'm unable to properly rate on the story itself. So I gave the middle star.

I don't know how this ended up in my library, maybe it's a gift or something. I don't care about Beyonce, and the narrator should be hired to torture prisoners in Guantanamo Bay by narrating random stuff to them all day.

How to make me not want to be Beyonce

The narrator really irked me. I wanted this book to be more about Beyonce's work ethics but instead he ranted on about fandom and obsession- I couldn't relate. As other reviews have said, this wasn't free, it was a waste of my time.

Hate to be negative, but...

I got this free from Audible, however, as someone else said, even for free, this was just a plain waste of time.
