Publisher's Summary:
From behind the walls of a handful of well-hidden, unlikely recording studios in the Los Angeles area, legends-in-waiting created masterpiece albums. It was a time of astonishing creativity and unprecedented fame and fortune. It was also a time of unfettered excess that threatened to unravel everything along the way.
With access that only a longtime music business insider can provide, Kent Hartman packs Goodnight, L.A. with never-before-told stories about the most prolific time and iconic place in rock 'n' roll history. He brings the stories to life through new in-depth interviews with classic rock artists and famous producers. What Hartman's The Wrecking Crew was to pop singles, AM radio, and the '60s, Goodnight, L.A. is to album cuts, FM radio, and the high-flying, hard-rocking '70s and '80s.

Read it.
Really good. Interesting stories you'll tell your friends about over beers, and annoy them cause you just keep going because there are so many good stories.
A MUST READ for any rock n' roll fan
I read everything I can about the history of rock n' roll, and Hartman's inside stories are unmatched. He's got the goods. He gets inside the studios, has true tales about the stars, but most important, he has the insider take from and about the lesser-known music makers. In his bestselling Wrecking Crew, the crew was known by some but not all; in Goodnight LA, he takes it up a sweet notch by weaving the history rock using the twin threads of Waddy Wachtel and producer Keith Olson - the guy behind Fleetwood Mac, early (great) Chicago, early (great!) Loggins and Messina, the Dead's best LP, and more more more. Olsen was American's George Martin yet with a broader range of artists. Please note that this is a loving tribute with only a few punches thrown; it's not a mean book. If you love rock and its creators, Goodnight LA is a must. Hartman also has a flowing writing style that is a pleasure to experience, while you relive the times and the changes. Your musical mind will be expanded, happily and with a ton of aha moments.
A must for any music history reference library
Goodnight, L.A., by Kent Hartman, is an excellent book for those who are into the recording of music of the late 1960s through the early 1980s in LA. This book centers on the studios, the producers, and their interaction with the musical artists themselves to produce the hits that still resonate with us.
The episodic writing is distracting, but the material presented is fascinating. This book is a worthy sequel to Hartman'sThe Wrecking Crew: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Best-Kept SecretRecommended for serious music fans.
Perfect holiday gift for many on my list...
Just like with Hartmanâs first book The Wrecking Crew, I gained a deeper appreciation and fascination of the music and the artists he writes aboutâbut this time covering music of the 70s and early 80s. The music this book explores has stood the test of time, so it was worth it to hear the behind-the-scenes stories about the artists, the creative tension, the production of and the drama that created the music we know. Perfect perfect PERFECT holiday or birthday gift for some music friends of mine.
