THE VERMIN RIVER

SHUN HIS TORCH DOWN THE STAIRWAY

This is British, but not overly British. He does use the often never used word in London, THE, even in the title. The Brits do not go to The University or The Hospital, the just go to University or Hospital, if it fits in their sedule, that is.

I was expecting to not like this and I ended up loving it. I had read Haunted and thought it too slow. This started fast, right out of the gate. The action is fairly constant. I would have liked to have had more mad scientist stuff, but it fits well with the writing of the time. Most of the action is unique and will keep your interest. plus you have the added sometimes comical, keep an upper lip and don't get rattled. I say old boy, I see no reason to get upset, (as a horde of rats are breaking down the door.) Those reviewers that you use the training wheels that audible has, are often asked, Would You Listen to This in One sitting. I did listen in one day. The only problem was around lunch. There are plenty of scenes with half eaten corpses and rats are just creepy doing nothing, much less eating people.

Awesome twist on our existence

Let me start by saying, whoever said that this book has "too much sex" and "no storyline without all the sex" did not fully engross themselves into this book. Most of the sex actually played a key role in the story and what didn't was more character development then anything. At first I was expecting a fairytale rehashing Snow White and the like, but I was pleasantly surprised it was it's own story.

A Horse The Size Of A Cat

Episode 1, exploded into our minds. Episode 2 drizzled in one ear and out the next. I have often been disappointed by the second book in a series, but I will have to say the difference between these two episodes was epic. The narrator was so boring I had to check to see if it was the same narrator as episode 1, since I remembered him as being great. In episode two the narration is boring and everybody sounds the same. I guess it was the inability of the writer to paint a picture with his words. In the beginning there was an interesting suspenseful scene involving a cat sized horse and a dinner plate size spider, but after that I was day dreaming.

At a little over five and a half hours long, I thought surly I can make it to the end. Instead, I found myself driving down the road totally forgetting I had a book on. I would catch myself day dreaming and try to get back into the book, but I just could not. About two and a half hours in, I changed to another book and had no problem staying in the new book.

I will not continue this series.

Jurassic Park, minus the tension...

I liked the first one enough that I bought this one, even though I was a bit annoyed at the way the first one ended (it was stopped mid-scene, with no form of resolution for the story, as if book one and book two were one book chopped in half).

This one does manage to resolve its own story (i.e. the story that this book is about is ended), but the overarching storyline started in book one is carried on to book three. I am okay with this because I expect there to be some loose ends in the middle book of a series and the resolution of this book's story was satisfactory (I don't mean, in any sense, that this is a good story, it is just a resolved one).

And that brings me to the story itself. This is Jurassic Park. Almost exactly - 'cept without the excitement or good writing.

The characters are not fully rational (sometimes they act in ways that no normal person would in the same circumstances), and they are not consistent in how they behave (they behave one way at the start of the story but at the end they act in ways completely contrary to how they began).

As an action adventure it was barely okay...

King By The Numbers

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I'm a big Stephen King fan and have very much enjoyed his last couple. While this wasn't classic King, it was certainly an enjoyable listen.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Finding out what happened to Danny Torrance after The Overlook burned down was the most interesting. Find out about The True Knot and, in particular, Rose the Hat, was often dull and predictable.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Will Patton?

I have; Alas, Babylon (which was fantastic). He's pretty good here and I have no problems with his narration, though he does sometimes get a bit over-wrought.

Was Doctor Sleep worth the listening time?

Way more worthwhile than answering the same question you asked first off in this review. Allow me to cut and paste...'I'm a big Stephen King fan and have very much enjoyed his last couple. While this wasn't classic King, it was certainly an enjoyable listen.'There. Happy now? Good. Moving on...

Any additional comments?

Not his best but plenty good enough. The middle third especially is outstanding, but the first third is too long and windy and the climax is oddly formulaic for King, something which can arguably said for most of the story. It feels like a good idea not quite seen through, if that makes sense.

Revisit The Shining if it's been a while

Seriously, I liked this book but I did feel that I wish I had re-read/listened to The Shining before listening to this one.

The Narrator - Will Patton does OK. His accents are alright but I got the feeling that there was no great love of Stephen King.

Not Horror, but by all means very good.

Take a journey as a dog... or a frog... or any animal that is drawn from the lottery of reincarnation.

This is an interesting idea to write a story about and James Herbert succeeds in telling it well.

The narrator, Damian Lynch has a halting way of speaking that I found distracting. So I turned the audio to 1.25 speed and that helped me get into the story immensely.

A charming story with a great narrator

A charming story with a great narrator. My dog, Jeffie, made me listen to it twice more. Which really wasn't a problem since it's such a delightful story.

A dog's life

I have always loved this book having read it about five times and this narration brings it to life. James Herbert has imagined a dog's life very well and the plot almost becomes irrelevant. Whether you listen in one go or in short bursts makes no difference as it is very easy to follow. Congratulations to Damian Lynch for his subtle characterisation.

bleak yet touching

it's an interesting book. quite alot darker than that family made film version. but James herbert isn't really known for his kid friendly books. not really sure why Hollywood had to make it quiet so corny. enjoyable. touching and bleak.

Fluke

This is the tenth time for me and Fluke. Reading or listening it is a thought provoking great story.

Believe It Or Not

When I was a kid, they used to have a show called Believe it Or Not. It had a scary intro and a narrator at the beginning and end. Each week they would present something off the wall, with no facts, just hear say. As a third grader it was spooky. This is exactly like that.

fun and creepy

The story starts slow but this pays off in the end very creepy and fun I love the tales from beyond the pale series.

Best Yet

Ashley Thorpe's stories are so well crafted and entertaining without being over the top. I hope he writes another story for Tales Beyond the Pale.

Walk in my shoes

I enjoy these short stories, the man who opens is perfect I love the way he introduces the story's. The actors are great what can I say I just enjoy these stories emencly !!! I'd do wish there were more.

Very good cozy mystery

I love these books. I love the characters, setting, and pacing. I wish audible would get more of this series.

Not cozy enough.

Would you try another book from Leslie Meier and/or Karen White?

Maybe. This was the 20th in a very popular series and I don't want to judge the others by a late entry.

What could Leslie Meier have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She could have made the story less grim. I enjoy the notion of Christmas cozies and try to read two or three of them during the holidays. I say notion because they are usually better in the abstract than the realization, and Im often disappointed. Theyre intended to be nothing more than light holiday entertainment, a pleasant distraction, but even by that low standard, I did not enjoy The Christmas Carol Murder. It has some great things going for it: its set in a small town in Maine and the plot is an interesting take on the Dickens story. However, its decidedly grim. The story is set in the aftermath of the subprime mortgage crisis and the small town of Tinkers Cover, Maine, is suffering. The authors concern for victims of an out-of-control banking industry is admirable, but the circumstances are made even darker by the gruesomeness of the murder and the desperation of the characters. Grim and Christmas cozy do not go together.

What didnt you like about Karen Whites performance?

She seemed uninteresting and at first, unintelligible. Perhaps it was her rhythm or a poor quality recording, but it took me half an hour of more of listening to her to begin to understand what she was saying.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I admired the authors topicality and deep felt concern for economic victims, and it may work better as a darker murder mystery instead of holiday entertainment.

Drives a Stake Through Pop Culture

Just for the record, Audible has these mislabeled. This is actualy book 4. Book 3 is Dracula Cha Cha Cha. I tried to tell them, so maybe they've corrected this by the time you do a series search. Now the review...

Admittedly, I'm biased. This series, in my humble opinion, is one of the best reads I've ever laid eyes - or ears - upon. Looking back, I probably should have given more in-depth reviews of the other 3. After the wait and the self-perpetuating hype, I started out a bit disappointed with this one, mostly because it seemed so very different after the first 3. At first I chalked it up to the years between the stories. But then I realized the genius behind what Kim Newman was pulling, and the further it went, the better it got. Let me explain

The first 3 books are part of the alternate history known as the Wold Newton Universe, which is pretty much the mother of all crossover universes. Or to be more accurate, it's its own parallel version of that universe. Look it up - you'll either be amazed or overrun. I'd offer you a link, but Audible apparently frowns on that here (I tried!), so you'll have to rely on your Google Fu.

What Newman did with this one is interconnect a series of novellas (some from previous ideas he's put forth) and inject the whole thing with a large dose of metafiction. In the hands of anyone else, the stories contained herein would come across as cheesy and weak. Being of both the literary and movie worlds, this is basically like playing in Newman's backyard, and the level of verisimilitude he gives to this absolutely sells it. He proves yet again that he is a master of his craft.

But what makes it different than the other 3? Well... spoiler alert, Dracula was killed in book 3. Or was he? Newman knows as well or better than any of us that Dracula will live on forever in pop culture, and as a result there are different versions of him that don't line up with the classic story or with history. Enter Johnny Alucard. Building on concepts from the previous novels, Alucard is basically the Son of Dracula, but so much more than a cheap knock-off. This one has that certain something that made the original who he was - the drive, the hunger. Has Dracula truly been reborn through his progeny? But this one is an American, making him something far different than the Master might have expected.

Great Stories

I can't get enough of these (I HOPE) true stories, cause I have no time for those that demean the whole field and Reasearch subject with skeptic fodder (fake tales), anyway there great and incredible I loved them and can't wait to hear more. If you like good and exciting stories then this book is for you.

The Best Collection of Bigfoot Tales!

This is my favorite collection of Bigfoot tales from the master, Rusty Wilson. They are indeed intense, scary, heartbreaking and fascinating. As with all his collections, they are well told. Richard Henzel is an excellent narrator, he gives the perfect balance of emotion and drama whether he is relating a tale from a male or female point of view. While I have read all the books, the audiobook versions bring them alive. Don't miss this collection and if you enjoy them, which I think you will, check out his other collections. All are excellent, written and told with heart and respect. If you enjoy Rusty's work, stop by his Rusty Bigfoot blog and say hello. He loves to hear from fans.

just allot of fun to listen to. then you may hear a bump in the night while your hiding under your bed. I would recommend to anyone that likes any type of campfire scare you stories to get it. does not matter if they are true or not it is good clean fun. just dont bump your head when you climb out from under your bed.

Would you listen to The Ghost Riders of Ordebec again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to it again but I would prefer to listen to others of the same series. I love mysteries. I love them to be thoughtful. These characters are well developed, the plot is complex yet able to be followed. What sets her apart, is that though very intelligent, the central character doesn't take himself too seriously.

What other book might you compare The Ghost Riders of Ordebec to and why?

I would compare it to books by Louise Penny. As with Penny, the characters are endearing, but Vargas has a delightful sense of humour, that we see a tiny bit of in the character of Ruth in Louise Penny's books.

Finall the Commissionaire has a voice!!!

I have read all of Vargas' books - brilliant. The Concessionaire's crew of investigators are one of a kind. Vargas is a best seller in Europe and world famous. Please put all of her books on audible!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, The story is compelling. The character development makes me want to listen to all books in the series, before and after this 9th one.

What other book might you compare The Ghost Riders of Ordebec to and why?

The character development of the primary character and secondary characters reminded me of Quintin Jardine's Bob Skinner series. He keeps multiple characters developing as well.

Have you listened to any of David Rintouls other performances before? How does this one compare?

I did listen to one Donna Leon book. I will pay attention to the books he perfporms as he does an excellent job of it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The several moments during which the characters attend with kindness to animals made me fond of them all.

I know that Fred Vargas's books have been translated into English, and I suspect they are available at Amazon UK.
