Brian Gill gives voice to a great story

While many would wait till the fall for a good ghost story, I bought the audio version of 'a soul to steal' to re-read a favorite this spring. I love the story an was most impressed with the voices and emotions Mr Gill gave the characters. This is a great performance of an interesting story.

Excellent story - not what one expects at first.

What did you like best about this story?

Highly engaging. The slow transition from a semi-typical serial killer to a highly unusual supernatural thriller (based on Irish mythology and early American goth horror) worked very will surprisingly. I would not have thought so had someone cursorily told me about it, yet it does.

Have you listened to any of Brian J. Gills other performances before? How does this one compare?

Gill is excellent in his performances of both of Backwell's novels. His accents are believable and he nails the nuanced vocal inflections that this text sometimes demands.

Who was the most memorable character of A Soul to Steal and why?

Quinn and Kate are both highly likable characters. Their goodness and edginess is a combination that works well for me.

Strongly recommended.

Was Pleasently Surprised by how good it was

I listened to this book with no perceived thought since I never heard of this author before. Figured it would be fun to listen to a new author and maybe fine someone new to follow.

Worst narrator, EVER!

What disappointed you about Wild Fell?

The narrator was very robotic. I'm going to try to get it from the public library.

The story sounds interesting but I couldn't get past 30 minutes because of the narration.

Good Narrator decent book!

I went in expecting a scary ghost story and ended up with a ghost story that makes you think. Good stuff. Can't say why for fear of spoilers! :)

Classic Ghost Story

I completed Wild Fell by mostly listening to the audiobook and a little by reading a hard copy. Right off the bat, I want to say Wild Fell is a great novel that is about as straight forward of a haunted house/ghost story you can get. This is my second Rowe novel and I am comfortable saying the author is a gifted storyteller. Both books I have read by Rowe contain classic tropes (Vampires/Ghosts) but still manage to remain compelling and original thanks to the authors skilled prose and refined character development.

The novel opens with a superbly executed prologue that introduces us to the haunted nature of Blackmore island and what it is capable of. After that, the story becomes a coming of age story you may find in a King book or other ghost stories. Again, Wild Fell stands out from these due to the quality of Rowes writing and the darkness it conveys. I was captivated the entire time by the story and honestly, it was over before I knew it. I did like the ending, I dont want to give it away but I will say it is an eerie and disturbing one. Despite the underlying creepiness of the narrative the story still explores the topics of love and family in a delicate and nuanced manner.

If you are a fan of ghost and haunted house stories then please pick up Wild Fell in one form or another. As I mentioned before I took in most of this book via audiobook and it is read well by the narrator, but the way this story is written it will be easy to follow no matter the mechanism of intake. I love and have read a ton of ghost stories in my day and Wild Fell will be high up on my list of recommendations. I do not think it would be unreasonable to compare the writing in Wild Fell to that of my favorite writer of ghost stories, the great Michael McDowell.

Interesting premise in the plot. How much technology and psychology work together to create pseudo life.

Another good book ruined by the narration.

This was another book I enjoyed reading years ago and was very excited to listen to, but the narration was so poorly done that by Chapter 3 I couldn't listen any longer.

The laughable attempts at female voices were the hardest part.

I think this is the book to break the camel's back, no more audio books or audible for me.

The story could have been more complex. I just kept waiting for the story to get better and it never happaned. I'm OK with graphic violance and sex if it serves a purpose in the story and not just for including it, just didn't make sense in the context of the story.

Awful story

This was a very disappointing read. The characters were hollow, with the main character being worst of all. All female characters are described by their chest size, and there seems to be little point in anything that anyone does. The narrator did the best he could, but probably would have founded better with a woman. The dialogue was dreadful at times. Please avoid this one.

Okay.

There was a little too much explicit gore and sex in this story for me to really enjoy it. Apart from that the book was quite good, but too much of the afore-mentioned things for me to give it a higher rating.

Yes, the story and flow are great! Dusk doesn't hold back! He has masterfully made me afraid of shity hotels.

What did you like best about this story?

Dusk has truly wrote a description and narrative of the destitute and dark side of damn near any city- especially El Cajon. He has done so as if the whole time staring out the window of one of the rooms. As for favorite part I'd say anytime he gives a glimpse into Sanjays soul!

Which character as performed by Rose Caraway was your favorite?

I felt her performance was good, just a little thin with respects to accents. Not that it hurt the story or mental picture. Just that if you ever walked into a "kwiki mart" or have ever ordered a late nite burrito you know the true accent of these characters.

If you could take any character from Shady Palms out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Candy!! No not really I'd say either Daniels or professor Cruz, either would make for insightful conversation.

I truly feel you are a bit sick and contorted but are blessed in the ability to artfully write it out so we can all share. Also in the story there was a brief mention of a demented Dr. Phobia- is there a possible John Daniels story arch there?? Thank you again!!!

Sci-fi meets pornography

Imagine irradiated bedbugs morphing into man-eating monsters. Then imagine that a motel hosts a pornographic on-line service. Then think about women who are on work-release from prison cleaning rooms in said motel. That's all folks. This is the worst book I have ever listened to.

Not for the timid - delicious graphic content!

Alan Dusk's skill as a writer really comes through in this performance of Shady Palms. I am not a fan of thriller or horror novels, and the storyline certainly follows the intensity of those genres. However, it was written in a way that kept me listening. It helps that Rose Caraway was the narrator, as she was clearly engaged in the story and giving life to the characters. The graphic sexual scenarios also helped keep my attention, portraying a grimy world of lust, power exchange, danger, and heat.

Some of the scenarios start off predictably, but there are skillful twists that pay off.

Picture perfect

Pickman's Model is the dark story of a man's explanation for why he will not go to the police and share information about the disappearance of a once friend.

This is a phenomenal short story. Lovecraft's world is awe inspiring; his writing is engaging and effective. His rambling reveal creates a realistic one-sided dialogue that shows the speaker's panic and horror more effectively than any external narrative could.

Wyman's performance is powerful, emotional, and fluid. He skillfully uses pacing and the placement of pauses and breaths to emphasize the speaker's state of mind in a way that feels natural. His reading brings the story to life.

Classic and Well Done

I've been wanting to "read" some of the classics and this is really well done. There are several stories and I'm only through the Pit and the Pendulum so far. I'm listening to the audio CD version, my idea of the best way to read a lot of books.

Great stories for rainy nights!

The phenomenal Edgar Allen Poe. He's the master of dark poetry. This CD has a sample of his best and darkest stories. The narrator did a Super job; nothing takes away from his rhythmic and horrifying stories. The narrator accomplished a sensational task, reading aloud the master's works. All around great quality and awesome stories!

I am a great fan of Poe and really enjoyed listening to this. If you love Poe you will like this. Only complaint, wish there were about three or four more cd's to this package.

Unusual and entertaining

A short, entertaining audiobook that fuses the ghostly past with present day, in a story of betrayal, superstition, redemption and a curse that spanned time. This well written novella has layers of interesting characters, each with their own story and yet the author manages to interweave all the threads into one comprehensive, intriguing tale. The narrator has a great voice that keeps your attention and gives each character an individual identity and personality. The story flows quickly, drawing you into the lives of the characters involved but still keeping the mystery and suspense of how it all fits together until the end. I received this audiobook from the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review.

A very unique and fun short story

Because it has different elements, suspense, comedy, and a curse.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard to say, the spirits were great each having their own unique personality which the reader captures perfectly from the first, the old crone to the newer ones. It showed the personalities as being very personable and will remind you of people you know. It is not spoken in old way of speaking, but more modern as they have been there for a long time and picked up on the current vernacular which makes it even better. The living characters are fun too with situations most people may recognize as their own from a time in their own lives.

get past initial premise

if you can get past the initial premise a strange friendship develops and a touch of Straw Dogs and Lord of the Flies. It is an odd story and not a horror story as it is advertised. the Richard Atlee character is a bit of an elemental man of the earth type who doesn't fit in and you can come to sympathize with him. but it is hard to accept the situation and so the story may not work at all for you. odd but interesting, it kind of works and then again it doesn't.

Wonderful Story!

My mom and I read this story when it first came out in the 70's. We really enjoyed it and remembered it fondly through the years. I felt like I was the one experiencing what this couple was going through. Joe Barrett did an excellent job, all the characters' voices were believable.

Lastly, it is a pleasure to read a book without having to endure unnecessary obscenities and swearing.

Mom would've loved the audio version.

The story starts out slow and although there is a peak it leaves you more melancholy than afraid, sad or upset. It was pleasant and thoughtful and at times depressing when you consider what the story says about humanity; both the good and bad points. Although not a thriller it is a very enjoyable story and would come highly suggested for people who enjoy a slow burn and easy listening.

Very good story!

I love Herbert Lieberman's stories. They are eerie and very very captivating. I equally love the voice and narration of Joe Barrett. I've had to return several good stories simply because of the narrators inability NOT to sound like they were reading to group of 5 year olds.......but not so with Mr. Barrett! He has the ability to make you feel what the author intends one to feel but always maintains that smooth voice, that to me is oddly comforting even when the story line is full of excitement, fear, etc.
