When Will I Find A Good Ghost Story?

What did you like best about Twisted? What did you like least?

Nothing spectacular to shout about here. Unfortunately, it seems like the modern authors who try for genuine horror just end up with graphic slasher movie fodder... The dependence seems to be more on trying to be as disgusting as you can and out of bounds from a moral perspective to try and "scare" you. If disgust rates as "scary" maybe so. Thinking about sending this one back...

I guess I should start off by saying that I was given an audible copy of this book by the Author in exchange for this review. That being said this book is everything you would want a haunted house story to be. The interplay between the characters is almost to scare you without any sort of supernatural elements. The picture Michael paints of a family on the verge of ruin through no outward fault of their own is so bleak and hopeless that you develop a desire to run in and help the family. This makes what happens to them all the worse since you can do nothing but keep reading as their situation goes from bad to horrible.

The author makes particular use of word choice in this book. I think this book showed me more about what good word choice can do to set a novels tone than any other book. This makes the themes of intergenerational abuse that much stronger since it is described with harsh and ugly words much like the topic.

The narration of this book is well done and doesnt take you out of the moment and things get worse and worse.

Excellent horror and dark fantasy anthology!

Depending on your perspective, a carnival or a circus can generate a host of pleasant or not-so-pleasant associations. You may have been thrilled by lions and elephants performing tricks, riding the Ferris wheel and Tilt-A-Whirl, or even eating popcorn and hotdogs. Or perhaps you mainly associate carnivals and circuses with less pleasant thingsâ like creepy clowns, freak shows, spooky fortune-tellers, and carnies. (No offense to the people that make carnivals possible!)

A newly released anthology, Nightmare Carnival, tends to present carnivals and circuses from this darker end of the scale. This new collection of dark fantasy and horror is edited by the inestimable Ellen Datlow, editor of scores of genre anthologies and the winner of many, many awards, including the Hugo, the Bram Stoker, the Shirley Jackson, and most recently the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. Iâm not familiar with N. Lee Wood, but her story âScapegoats,â the leadoff story, was excellent. It is mainly told from the perspective of Mae, âThe Amazing Lobster Woman,â part of the World Famous Bishop Brothers Traveling Carnival. Through Mae, we become acquainted with the various characters of this train-traveling carnival/circus, particularly a gentle elephant named Madelaine. The story focuses upon the carnivalâs arrival in a small town, where an unjust incident involving Madelaine ends with a local manâs death, and the unfair consequences for the carnival. I wonât spoil the ending, but the title should give you some idea. And let me say that the âscapegoatâ scene is fairly traumatic. However, the ending offers something of a just desert, at least by some moral compasses.

Priya Sharma's story, âThe Anatomistâs Mnemonic,â in Datlowâs most recent Yearâs Best Horror was brutal, but very well-written. Her story here, âThe Firebrand,â is about a fire act in a circus that ends tragicallyâ and mysteriously. The story revolves around a love triangle, and in some ways itâs just a murder mystery and soap opera rolled into one. But Sharmaâs characters and dialogue really suck you in. âThe Firebrandâ wasnât exactly horror, but a very intriguing thriller.

Jeffrey Fordâs âHibblerâs Minionsâ is something of a monster story centered about a flea circus. The story begins with a farmer selling a strange beast to a traveling circus that hopes it will be a popular, money-making attraction. Unfortunately, the creature dies soon after it is purchased â but all is not lost. The strange creature seems to have a few fleas that end up becoming the most amazing flea circus ever. A circus hand named Hibbler trains them and soon his act becomes the main money-making stars of the circus. However, several of the animals in the circus begin to mysteriously dieâ followed by several human deaths as well.

Twisty and turny

The story definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. My favorite part of this audio book was the narrator. He did an incredible job reading the story. You could hear the fear in his voice. Awesome!!!

Lowly expectations for cheap thrills now DAMNED

If you could sum up The Damned in three words, what would they be?

A page-turner,yes, but with characters rendered so fully, you can imagine some spooky hands materializing up out of those pages to help with the turning! If that is not enough, thematically this book mines the most basic depths of the human psyche. Plus the Milton allusions so strong Dore illustrations would work well in text version... ...except Dore is dead...or is he?

Any additional comments?

After reading this and other Pyper's books, I am more picky about selecting reads in the genre for want of comparable quality. Formerly very low expectations are raised, now books I thought I'd enjoy are missing important nuances and shadings. Harder to find a good read. GHEEZ! Thanks, Mr. Pyper .

Wonderful story this is the first book I've listened to from Andrew Pyper and I can't wait to start the next one. Chilling and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book.

Waiting for a scare...

Boring, mostly it's main character own thoughts and memories. Rated G (Disney) Zero scare factor!!! The narrator was OK. Just disappointed with the story! I had hoped for this one because I thought "Gone Girl" was a good story. Reviews from a third grader. I wonder.

Drowning in a sea of competition

I purchased the first one in this series without any reviews and it seems I did it again with this second in the series. It has also been a long time between titles so I wondered how I would go particularly because I have listened to a lot of zombie titles in the meantime.

I need not have worried because this one started off with a lot of the detail from the first. So I was quickly able to recall the story. It went into so much back story that I wondered if I had purchased the same book with just a name change.

In this title the same things can be said about the first in regards to narration. At normal speed it is just way to slow. Speed it up to 1.25x or even 1.5x speed and all is well. However, at 1.5x speed you are shortening the listening time to an already rather short story!

One thing which did strike me as odd was that at no time in the entire story is the word zombie mentioned! In my mind that is just weird! Another thing is odd, is occasionally the main character will go off into day dreams. I afraid for me it just didnt work. It just felt odd.

I stated in my review of the first in the series that I was looking forward to the next one. This time round I am not so sure. There still is a glimmer of hope for me to try the next in the series, but I will definitely want a longer story for it to be worth it with such a slow narrator.

I hate leaving a review like this, because I know some author has spent countless hours working. But then I know that there are people like me who don't have a lot of cash and spending money on a audio book is something which means a lot. Therefore I feel compelled to say with so many other great zombie titles around at the moment, this one just doesn't rise to the top. My buying advice on this one is wait until it is on the special price table sorry

This was a great extension of the first!

There are new characters in this one. Fortunately they are for the most part pretty intelligent and are now starting to realize that life is not as they once knew it. Its still only a few days in, however, so the entire zombie apocalypse thing is a new one for them. This explains a lot of their stupidity, like using guns, or even once A CHAINSAW! But, they realized that noise brings in the shells (Jeffrey Littornos usage for zombie) and they try to keep it down. After a while they even decide to control their gun use even though they know it will bring them closer to the shells.

The zombies are not talking as much. The characters are all trying to hypothesize why and what is going on. They wind up making up some pretty reasonable excuses for what is going on. I was impressed although it took them a while.

I really enjoyed reading about Lawrence.

Adult cartoon violence - perfect!

If you are the type of person who likes cartoon violence, and I should say adult cartoon violence, then you will love this one! It is a bit like Sideshow Bob on steroids! I loved the absurdity of it all. Most zombie titles attempt to take themselves way too seriously. I mean come on people, it is a zombie genre how could we take it serious? But not this one, this one is full of stuff that is just unbelievable! Unbelievable but in a good way.

It seems in this book in the series, Jace is not the only person with a wicked sense of humour. As a result I loved this series even more.

The narration is good, the speed of the narration is good. 1.25x speed provided just the right listening pleasure. Jake Bible really gave the narrator Andrew Wehrlen a very difficult task in this one, as there are a lot more characters, and I mean weird characters that all need unique voices. At times I wondered which character was talking because they sounded the same (you can only have so many crazy voices before it sounds the same). I really dont think any other narrator I have heard could done a better job. But if there was ever a title which screamed for multiple narrators, then this is it. Please dont take this as a reason not to purchase this one, it is just an observation, which I hope some authors will pick up on and introduce multiple narrators more often.

I listen to this one in one go and was hoping it wouldnt end!

Best Laughs Yet

I continue to love this series, and the books keep getting funnier! I can't count the number of times I belly laughed while listening to Cannibal Road. I kept rewinding not only because I wanted to hear the hilarious parts again, but also because I found myself unable to hear over my own boisterousness. I swear, listening to this book was an ab workout!

Awestruck!

I truly can't think of a single criticism of this book, or of this performance. I have heard many books read by Simon Vance and he is consistently excellent. His subtle voice characterisations and his pace and tone are, to me, very easy to listen to.

The story continues one of which I've been a fan for a long time so any review by me will be heavily biased. It's hard to believe that these are not tales of people who actually exist. Anne Rice doesn't write 'characters', she writes histories. Profoundly attractive ones.

I enjoyed this immensely and I am sure I'll do so again before long.

Great Idea, Badly executed

I love the Vampire chronicles and most of Anne Rice's other books. I was eagerly awaiting this Vampire chronicle but was sorely disappointed. The idea for the story is good but the rambling incoherent path she takes to get to the half decent ending, is very dull and over written. Simon Vance's narration was difficult to understand at times and the accents he used for the characters were just bizarre. What a sad ending to the Great Vampire Chronicles.

This is the one to tie all those loose ends up.

Characters you have long missed are brought back for one final outing.

Overall the story was good but some of the "returns" are a bit forced.

Enjoyed this very much.

First audiobook fiction I've listened to, thoroughly enjoyed it and the narrator's performance. Listened to it whilst training for my next marathon.

I would recommend Prince Lestat to any fan of The Vampire Chronicles, but I don't think a non-fan would rate it at all.

Simon Vance is a great reader, I love his range of voices even though his Asian characters all sound like the shopkeeper from The Simpsons.

Oh, Fated Horror Story Protagonist...

This is one of my very favorite Lovecraft stories, because while it fiddles with some of his more common themes (dream realities, anthropomorphic beasties, the occult, etc.), it delves a little more darkly into details such as [SPOILER] infanticide and rats eating peoples' hearts out. The only thing I have to whine about here is the reader-- who gave a very satisfying performance by his abilities no doubt (and I'm sure he's a swell guy), but I just wish he had an American accent, given the writer of the story and the setting. Just because it's classic macabre doesn't mean it has to be in an English accent, right? Poe was from the Mason-Dixon line, and Lovecraft was a Yankee. Come on, represent mo-fo. 'Merica!

Great book. PHENOMENAL NARRATOR.

Where does The Weird Company rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It's in there with Brian Sanderson's Steelheart and any of the Dresden books. Warning: There is heavy reference to the Cthulhu Mythos. I've been a fan most of my life, and I had to look stuff up! It's festooned with references and callbacks.

The retelling of some of Lovecraft's most famous works. I had some Lovecraft nerd moments where I would get a reference and high five myself. Seriously.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wymans other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but damn if I don't plan to. He is simply the best audiobook narrator I have ever heard. I had to look at the credits again just to make sure that there was only one narrator. Oliver Wyman has got the acting chops to make this seem like a movie. He gets the candor and cadence just right on the characters. I mean, wow. I will seek audiobooks that are narrated by him just for HIM.

If you could take any character from The Weird Company out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Probably Chandra Putra. I'm not going to spoil anything, but the man has seen his share of crazy.

Peter Rawlik delights with a "fill in the blanks" book that takes place in Lovecraft's carefully constructed, but often ambiguous Cthulhu mythos. It reads much like Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Imagine Weird Company is the Avengers to the League's X-men. Same ingredients, similar universe, all the fun. Come for the story and stay for Oliver Wyman's jaw dropping performance. This guy can ACT!
