Slow to start but once it got going, it didn't stop.
Disclaimer: I 'purchased' this off of Kindle when it was free during a special Linkville Press promotion.
Porter Booth - a man that you could almost find in real life criminal history. Haunted by a past built by his abusive father, his meek and abused mother, an aunt who helped him just a little too late, a doctor who gave up on him & pretty much anyone he trusted that failed him, Porter Booth walks along a path of destruction taking anyone and everyone who either was an actual part of his past or that reminds him of his past down before the day comes that he himself falls down for good. Sick, sadistic, bruised and possessed, Porter Booth is on a mission to feed his demons before they devour him - that is if Detective Adams doesn't beat them to it. Booth keeps just one step ahead of Detective Adams, leading him on a very taunting wild good chase - much like The Zodiac Killer. Part one is over and the demons are winning. Will part two see Booth's demise or his victory?
All in all, it was a quick read - which was nice on a busy, blah day. There are a two things for me that are of a very mild concern: the lack of a bunch of dialogue that could have been used to break up the long paragraphs a bit more (I have some bad eyes so this did strain my eyes a little bit); and, even though this is merely part one of a three part journey, it was quite slow in terms of building up to the main action of this component. It was actually slow enough that it felt like the start could have been the start of a prequel novella, building up to the main series (not necessarily a bad thing - something for the author to consider!). However, once it did get going, it certainly did not disappoint.
There is much potential in this series, as far as this reader is concerned. And I can't wait to see what happens next.
splatter-movie road-trip balanced by dogged detection
An abused child grows up to be an abusive serial killer in Bea Bruggeâs Killing from the Inside, a novel that invites its readers inside the head of a serial killer. âPorterâs life was horrible,â the author tells us. âHe experienced and witnessed things that a child should never have had to seeââ But now he causes others to experience his demons too, in a gory tale told through a blend of simple language and complex words that awkwardly evokes the ungrown child within.
This killing spree, well-planned with a splatter-movie road-trip feeling, is counterbalanced by a dogged detective seeking to catch his criminal, and the touch of a love interest.
