Too Much Power

Regardless of your political leanings, after reading this book you will realize that the apointees running the Federal Reserve have way too much power and too much influence over our economy. You will see how misguided Alan Greenspan has been and you will recognize much of Greenspan's policies in Ben Bernanke's handling of the Fed. Maybe Ron Paul is right when he advocates abolishing the Fed. After reading this book I encourage you to read up on Keynesian economics if you haven't already.

The text of this book is only 84 pages long and the type is rather large so it is a quick and easy read. However, there is a lot of useful info packed into this book so don't feel like you're being shortchanged.

Who Shot Goldilocks?

William D. Rutherford's "Who Shot Goldilocks?: How Alan Greenspan Did in Our Jobs, Savings, and Retirement Plans" is an intelligent and well-researched analysis of the economy of the United States.

The United States economy in the nineteen nineties was efficient and productive, and economists said it was ideal. The public and governments from all over the world looked up to the U.S. economy with admiration mingled with envy. The U.S. economy did not encourage inflation, as the growth was steady. At the same time because of the stable state of affairs, it created a congenial atmosphere for production. In other words, the economy was "just right!" and hence was called the Goldilocks economy.

However, by the end of the decade, the economy faltered and stopped growing. The stock market crashed. Some businesses were closed down. Many people lost their jobs and savings. There was no hint or warning that this type of crash could happen to the economy, and the economists and government were caught unawares. They did not even realize what had happened, and hence were not in a position to try and set it right.

Rutherford explores the downturn of the economy, searching for who is responsible for the current state of the economy. He then scathingly criticizes the responsible parties for their role in the economic downswing. He also demonstrates that the implosion of the economy could have been prevented.

Despite the focus of the book being what went wrong in the economy, he ends on a note of hope, saying that the American economy will still prosper due to the efforts of industrialists who are innovative risk takers.

Good book

What did you like best about this story?

I was looking for some short books on the founders of the Analytic tradition in philosophy, and this was helpful to me. Nice short interwoven biographies of these two philosophers with notes on their work and how it fit into the times and the progression of Western thought. I agree with another reviewer that Russell got more coverage but not overwhelmingly so. It was a nice mix.

What about Lynn Redgraves performance did you like?

Clear, pleasant, well suited to the British academics who are the subjects of the book.

Audible is a God Send

Audible is wonderful for those of us who are getting older and our vision is not what is used to be. I especially enjoy Audible because I can listen and without interference. It is easy to put a book down and do something else, however while listening to books I read fifty years ago I can do other things.

If you could sum up Aristotle in three words, what would they be?

The First Humanist

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

Hard to say. I guess it would be that Aristotle was the first major humanist. Not a wonderful thing, but it is interesting that he came up with ideas that are still held high in esteem today.

What does Charlton Heston bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Sometimes being able to listen helps with understanding, no other comments though.

Great book if you are interested in philosophy. Aristotle is complicated wise and knowledgeable in his field.

Very good

It helped me a lot to understand Sartre and what was behind his writings. Great to listen to

Bad, bad, narration

What a shame. I would have been really interested in this audiobook, but having listened to the audio sample it is too unpalatable for my taste. What accent is Sartre supposed to have? Italian? He was FRENCH. If you're going to do an accent for god's sake get the right nationality or better still, a narrator with the correct accent!

And Charleton Heston?! No, no, no. Aside from his terrible pronunciation of 'Sartre', this kind of actor is totally wrong for this subject matter.

A missed opportunity by the publisher - I hope another version is made with a more sensible choice of voice actors.

A nice quick run-through

Not a great deal of depth but a nice introductory guide to Sartre. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Severely Lacking

What seemed to be an intriguing summary of postmodern theory turned out to be a scattered, obnoxious, and unhelpful listen. The audiobook is filled with sound effects and childish attempts at comedy that do not provide any clarification as one might assume. Major postmodern theorists such as Foucault are oversimplified and never explained, which will likely confuse the newcomer to such theory.

Good intro.

A little cheesy and a little scatter-brained, but that's the way it goes with Postmodernism. I'm left with wanting to know more and to have a better grasp of what connects it all together.

The ideas are there, but...

This audiobook touches on many significant ideas and writers, and covers many prominent postmodern works in art, architecture, literature, philosophy,etc.

However, the presentation is awful. The ideas are presented as if the original writers and artists were reading and comenting on their own work. The acting is terrible and the accents--especially the French and German--are terrible, often difficult to understand or just downright annoying.

Unfortunately, the deeply flawed production obscures the ideas.

Too little information and too much entertainment!

I really cant say I learned much. it seemed to have been made for kids. also, the fact that they reflected the woman as a dumb person whose husband knows and has to explain everything was really annoying and insulting!

WWF Bodyslam on Hegel

The author of this book I think does not take the time to carefully examine Hegel's contributions and to grasp his influence. He concentrates instead on criticizing Hegel, to the point where one wonders whether the author's intent is really to help the reader understand Hegel or just to see how cleverly he can insult him. For example, he spends rather a lot of attention for such a short book on Hegel's affair with his landlady - why?

I like a good poke at a pompous figure, and I have no special love for Hegel, but when I buy a book like this I hope for some insights even in the midst of criticism, and I expect the author to help me gain some clarity on the subject. Instead I got a crude body slam.

A body slam is too much effort

This is more like a slap in the face. The writer is more interested in pulling off the cynical tone that Fitzgerald criticizes in This Side of Paradise. How useful is this review if you haven't read Fitzgerald? About as useful as this book is to illuminating Hegel if you haven't read Hegel. Stay away.

don't waste your money

What would have made Hegel in 90 Minutes better?

The author could decrease the snark. Saying that Hegel "bamboozled" his lecture audiences in Berlin tells me nothing. Saying that some of the long sentences in his work are "gobbledeegook" tells me nothing about Hegel and something about the author.

What could Paul Strathern have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Have some genuine interest in the subject matter.

What disappointed you about Hegel in 90 Minutes?

I was hoping for something more straightforward and less opinionated, with more content and less skewed commentary. The author clearly has personal opinions about Hegel that obscure and color the text, and not many of Hegel's actual ideas are presented.

Would you ever listen to anything by Paul Strathern again?

Probably not.
