    Title: Gusher of Lies
Subtitle: The Dangerous Delusions of 'Energy Independence'
    Author: Robert Bryce
    Narrator: Peter Larkin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-25-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
    Publisher's Summary:
A surprising, irreverent, and scrupulously reported deconstruction of today's fashions in energy policy. Everybody is talking about "energy independence". But is it really achievable? Is it actually even desirable? In this controversial, meticulously researched book, Robert Bryce exposes the false promises behind the rhetoric while blasting nearly everybody - Republicans, Democrats, environmentalists, and war-mongering neoconservatives - for misleading voters about our energy needs.
Gusher of Lies explains why the idea of energy independence appeals to voters while also showing that renewable sources like wind and solar cannot meet America's growing energy demand. Along the way, Bryce eviscerates the ethanol scam. Whether the issue is cost, water consumption, or food prices, corn ethanol is one of the longest-running robberies ever perpetrated on American taxpayers. Consumers concerned about peak oil and the future of global energy supplies need to understand that energy security depends on embracing free markets and the realities of interdependence. Gusher of Lies is illuminating and vital.
    Critic Reviews:
"Its exhortative instead of purely informative. It hammers apart the idea that we really want to be independent of oil. Energy interdependence should be the actual goal for our energy system." (Politico)
    Members Reviews:
Thesis is okay - point of view too narrow
What would have made Gusher of Lies better?
Come at it from a more centered position
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I didn't quite get all the way to the end
What about Peter Larkins performance did you like?
It was quite competent - the tone brought out the author's obvious bias.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It presents the problem well enough. But instead of saying that any one form of energy could be a PART of a solution, he dismisses each as incapable of replacing oil on it's own (and truthfully tells why I might add).
    Any additional comments?
Oil is a world-wide commodity and it's price is based on that demand. It will never be completely replaced, but oil should be looked at as "too precious to waste". It is hard to see it's use in plastics being replaced. That's about 40% of it's present use. And replacing plastic as a packager? Very unlikely. It makes our food and drugs safe, etc. No one form of energy, green or otherwise, will completely ameliorate oil's use, but combinations of many of them can be used to replace it for our transportation, heating & electrical power generation requirements.
A much better listen is Daniel Yergen's The Quest. It identifies many of the issues brought out is this book, but in a much more even-handed, historical and logical manner.

    Title: Animal Rights
    Subtitle: A Very Short Introduction
    Author: David De Grazia
    Narrator: L. J. Ganser
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-13-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
This volume provides a general overview of the basic ethical and philosophical issues of animal rights. It asks questions such as: Do animals have moral rights? If so, what does this mean? What sorts of mental lives do animals have, and how should we understand welfare?
By presenting models for understanding animals' moral status and rights, and examining their mental lives and welfare, David DeGrazia explores the implications for how we should treat animals in connection with our diet, zoos, and research. Animal Rights distinguishes itself by combining intellectual rigor with accessibility, offering a distinct moral voice with a non-polemical tone.
    Members Reviews:
A great introduction to the subject.
This book is suitable for undergraduates and others interested in an introduction to the issues surrounding animals and human-animal relations. It provides a useful, well organized guide to the philosophical arguments regarding how humans should treat animals in the wild, as pets, in agricultural production and animal testing of products and other scientific research.
    Five Stars
One of the best introduction to the subject.
    Good start
A good start for the arena of animal rights. Surprised by how short it is, however it seems to be the ideal text to begin one's introduction to this subject.
Not what it claims to be
This is not an introduction to animal rights. It is a discussion of moral theories related to a few issues in animal rights. I was looking for a book that would summarize and discuss key thinkers along with something about this history of the movement. This book does none of that. It is not useful for undergraduate courses. Maybe it is useful for philosophy course on moral theory.
A solid discussion of the issuing surrounding our treatment of animals
In the early 1980s I read very deeply in the writings of Mahatma Gandhi and was especially struck by his discussion of reverence for life. These writings had a huge impact on me and made me reconsider a number of aspects of my life. While in the midst of reading his writings I came across Peter Singer's ANIMAL LIBERATION. Right book at the right time. I quickly followed the reading of this with Mary Midgley's ANIMALS AND WHY THEY MATTER and Tom Regan's THE CASE FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS. While I did not buy into the specific arguments of each of these writers, the aggregate influence of Gandhi, Singer, Midgley, and Regan was immense. I made a number of major changes in my life, including limiting the amount of leather I wore, becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian (I didn't make the shift to veganism), taking care not to buy any products that were tested on animals, and doing what I could to support animals rights causes. I was even a member of PETA before it adopted strategies that I could not condone.
The remarkable thing about writings on Animal Rights in the early 1980s was that you could fairly easily read all of the literature on the subject and I pretty much did. While I have from time to time dipped back into the subject over the past twenty-five years, I have not been able to keep up with all of the literature, and couldn't catch up even if I strove to do so. To say that there has been an explosion in the literature would be an understatement. Where in 1985 there was perhaps 7 or 8 major works in the field, today there are 80 or 90.

    Title: Descartes: An Introduction

Length: 5 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-29-10
    Publisher: Naxos Audiobooks
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
René Descartes is one of the formative figures in Western philosophy, logic and mathematics. His famous statement: "I think, therefore I am," has become perhaps the most famous phrase in all of philosophy. Descartess ground-breaking writings attempted to establish unshakeable foundations of knowledge, and set a trend for subsequent Western philosophy, which has endlessly critiqued and expanded upon his ideas.
    Editorial Reviews:
Ross Burman's Descartes: An Introduction serves as a strong, concise point of access for beginner philosophers seeking to explore the basics of René Descartes' life, writings, and long-term impacts on the field. This audiobook combines textual excerpts with explanation, explication, and ideological deconstruction.
Voice actors Jonathan Oliver and Roy McMillan perform this introductory work, and succeed very admirably in spicing up what could quite easily, in the wrong hands, have become a flat and undimensional production. Oliver and McMillan's lively readings breathe life in Descartes' abstract philosophy, making this audiobook easy to follow and enjoyably informative.
    Members Reviews:
    Very difficult to understand.
I couldn't get past the first chapter. The thick accent and archaic language used made it very hard for me to follow.
    Very Nice Overview
What made the experience of listening to Descartes: An Introduction the most enjoyable?
The clarity of the man's thoughts are breathtaking, even after all these centuries! It's well read and the commentary is very good.
What does Jonathan Oliver and Roy McMillan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The book is brilliantly read but, truth be told, I mostly listen in the car and that would simply be impossible without readers.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Oh, definitely not. I love the fact that I could listen to it in sections and then muse on what was said for hours. It's pretty deep stuff!
    Excellent Introduction to Decartes's Philosophy
Rene Descartes is widely regarded as 'the father of modern philosophy'. This audiobook provides an excellent introduction to his philosophical work. As well as being a philosopher, Decartes was an important mathematician and natural philosopher (what we would now call a scientist) and he was one of the leading figures of the early stages of the scientific revolution (he comes between Galileo and Newton). This audiobook will be useful to anybody with an interest in early-modern thought.
    Disappointing
I bought this book as i thought it would be a good commentary on one of Descartes's most well known works. However there is very little useful analysis and the remainder of the audio book is actually just a reading of the abridged version of the book. I think that is outrageous as the full version of the audiobook is available as an audiobook at www.librivox.org FOR FREE.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
    Publisher's Summary:
Capitalism is under attack by leftists who want to remake the United States into a European-style welfare state. The Obama administration's corporate bailouts, excessive spending, and sweeping expansion of government interference in the private economy are undermining our economy and the hopes and dreams of future generations. History suggests these policiesif left uncheckedwill prove disastrous.
The Road to Prosperity is a clarion call for a return to the principles that support economic growth, individual opportunity, and freedom. Written by former Pennsylvania congressman and president of the Club for Growth Patrick Toomey, The Road to Prosperity is a masterful critique of leftist economic fallacies and an eloquent exposition of the superiority of free-market capitalism as a creator of prosperity and human happiness.
Throughout this book, Toomey argues that we should cut taxes, reduce government spending, and end the government micro-management of banks, carmakers, and other troubled companies. Specifically, a simple, three-year moratorium on corporate taxes or a two year, 50% reduction in payroll taxes would cost the same as the stimulus bill, but would provide far more stimulus to the economy. And instead of propping up failing companies with taxpayer money, Toomey asserts we should allow these companies to file for bankruptcy and reorganize, which would free up investment capital for new, more promising enterprises.
A brilliant exposition of today's economic problems and a spirited defense of capitalism, The Road to Prosperity explains what we need to do to revitalize our economy and restore the American Dream.
    Critic Reviews:
"With clarity, verve, and polish, Pat Toomey brilliantly propounds the principles and practical policies needed to make Americaand the worldprosperous again. Ronald Reagan, Adam Smith, and Milton Friedman would vigorously applaud what Pat has put forth here." (Steve Forbes)
"While many talking heads are tripping over each other to write the political obituary for conservatives, Pat Toomey illustrates how the limited government movement has the best policy answers for the challenges of the twenty-first century. This is a must-read book for any serious student of the limited government movement." (Dick Armey, author of the Contract with America, former House Majority Leader)
    Members Reviews:
Call to arms from a conservative leader
In the Introduction, Larry Kudlow lays out what is at stake in Pat Toomey's economic approach (Page xi): "'The Road to Prosperity' by Pat Toomey is an important salvo in the fight for traditional American free-market economics against the Obama -led, European-style collectivist policies."
Toomey begins the volume by laying out four key principles that are required for healthy economic growth and prosperity: (1) Private ownership of policy; (2) Allowing markets to operate freely; (3) Low taxes; (4) Stable money. Each chapter following uses these principles to explore a variety of issues.
Chapter 2 observes that our understanding of FDR's New Deal is wrong; it actually exacerbated the Great Depression. Chapter 3 considers tax policy and how to improve it, based on his principles. Chapter 4 examines government spending, with special distaste registered for earmarks, pork, and deficits.

Harry E. Figgie, Jr., a leading cost-reduction expert, industrialist and entrepreneur, explains exactly how we got into this mess through the failure of our leaders to act with courage and resolve, and what national bankruptcy will mean for every one of us, rich or poor. Most important, he provides us with a detailed plan of action, a way out of these dire straits, if we can summon the will to act now, and to force our leaders to act. "Bankruptcy 1995" is a vital call to arms at a moment of great crisis for our nation.
    Members Reviews:
What cause countries to go bankrupt, and what must be done to stop yours.
The author of this book expected the United States to go bankrupt in 1995. So why haven't they. Because people told their politician that they need to get tough, and they did. In 1999, America had a surplus, and Bill Clinton said if we continue to do what we have done, their will be no debt by 2013.
This book explains how if a country owes too much money, it will have death by hyperinflation where the currency is worthless, or death by debt. It starts off with a story of how things could happen. It then talks about the different Presidents and how each contributed to the debt.
It blames both Republican and Democrat presidents. It talks about all aspects of the government's part of not spending more than it earns. This book is more important than ever. After Bill Clinton, did something about the deficit, George Bush and Obama have made it go up. This book explains why. Ronald Reagan had massive tax cuts. Before he was in office, he was upset that it was approaching $1 Trillion. After he left office, he made it go up by Trillions. And in 1985, he allowed the government to borrow from Social Security.
Tax cuts didn't help the deficit. Why? Because as William Greider explained, the Fed reacted by raising interest rates, and that hit the poor hard. Tax cuts, are good if your earning more than your spending as a country, but when you owe a lot, everybody needs to make sacrifices. George Bush's tax cuts, were at a time when America was finally getting itself in order. Because George Bush has put the country in so much debt; Obama is left with a huge interest bill. So its going to be tough whoever is in office.Bankruptcy 1995: The Coming Collapse of America and How to Stop It
Twenty years late but coming to pass
There is one problem with "Bankruptcy 1995." Its author did not take demographics into account. Namely, the Boomers were in their prime earning and spending years in the 1990s and into the very early 2000s. This helped to fuel an already robust economy. The unemployment rate during this time was consistently low. People were making good money. Taxes flowed into the treasury (both from the income tax and from the S.S. and Medicare taxes). Accordingly, during the Clinton years we had a surplus.
Times have changed. Government spending continued to increase. But as the Baby Boomers approached retirement age, their spending habits changed. Other factors came into play as well, including some fundamentally wrongheaded decisions in both the public and private sectors in relationship to the banking industry. Thus came the Great Recession of 2008-2009. We have yet to recover from that. And we won't recover. For the Baby Boomers are beginning to reach retirement age.
