    Title: The Modern Scholar
Subtitle: Political Theory: The Classic Texts and Their Continuing Relevance
    Author: Joshua Kaplan
    Narrator: Joshua Kaplan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-14-08
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 78 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Professor Kaplan's goal is to make these works accessible without distorting or oversimplifying them. As you will see, the study of political theory is an enjoyable, gratifying, and challenging subject that will reward the effort you put into thinking about it many times over.
Political theory helps us to think about who we are, where we are coming from, and where we are going. At the same time, theory does not tell us what to do, but can help us to act with purpose and vision. It helps us to step back and get perspective on our problems and on who we really are.
Here, you'll investigate how the language of political theory conveys its meaning. This course is not a substitute for reading the texts, but it can help you to overcome some of the obstacles that the texts present. It is not easy to pick up a book by Aristotle or Hobbes and figure it out on your own. We all need some help in understanding the world, and that is the starting point for political theory itself.
As you embark on this adventure, you are taking part in a community that comes from specific times and places, but transcends them. These great works can speak to us today, wherever we are. Political theory does this better than many other subjects, in part because the theorist wants us to look around and think about the specifics of the world around us, but also to lift our heads and see farther than we normally do. By the conclusion of this course, you will see a dramatic difference in your ability to understand what you read or watch in the news.

Every American Should Listen to This
As the presidential election gathered steam this fall, I was listening to this course by Dr. Kaplan and felt as if he was channeling expert commentary from the great political thinkers of history. My advice: Turn off the TV talking heads and listen to this course. It will connect many of the bits of information you already have about politics -- then sharpen everything into a clear picture.
    Quite enjoyable and informative.
If you could sum up The Modern Scholar in three words, what would they be?
    I love Thucydides
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Modern Scholar?
The narrator, professor Kaplan, begins his analysis of political science with the ancient Greeks and leads up to modern Game theory. It between, you take a trip through many of the great authors that deal with the subject of political science such as: Machiavelli, Rousseau, John Locke, et cetera. This is one of my favorite audio books, and I plan to listen to it many more times.
    Inconsistent, but enjoyable
Anyone looking for a wide-ranging, systematic treatment of classical political thought/science might look elsewhere. I would retitle this something like, "some of this professor's favorite important political thinkers: a grab bag." As such, it is fairly well-delivered and a pleasant listen. It is in a sort of vernacular, personalized style, which I might call "very college, very undergrad;" not the sort of high academic delivery I might have expected. Some will prefer that, and for fine reasons: it will speak to a pretty wide audience.
    Excellent book to be read
this book let you understand political theory and its evolving process by the certain peoples' ideas, briefly.

    Publisher's Summary:
Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome from AD 161 until his death in 180, was the philosopher-king envisaged by Plato. A stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius wrote a series of spiritual exercises (now known as his meditations) while engaged on a series of border wars in the Danube region.
His writings, intended only for himself, reveal a mind of great humanity, humility, and insight. For over 2,000 years, these writings have inspired men and women to engage in the philosophical life, which involves two goals: to "know yourself" and then to ask, "What is the right way to live?"

Muffled audio ruins the listening experience
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Better, clearer audio quality. With a little effort, I am certain that the audio could have been restored.
What other book might you compare The Spiritual Teachings of Marcus Aurelius to and why?
Derek Jacoby and Marcus Aurelius should have been an unbeatable team, a meditative experience. Instead, the audio is muffled, and this is a great distraction, and disrespectful of this great work and the great actor.
Would you be willing to try another one of Derek Jacobis performances?
    Of course.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Spiritual Teachings of Marcus Aurelius?
    You've got to be kidding.
    Any additional comments?
This is the only recording from audible of which I have had a disappointing experience.
    Very inspirational
Fascinating seeing as the philosophy comes from 2000 ago without any of today's technology. The key to contentment explained in a simple and easy to understand way

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
To make "nonviolent" choices is to allow respect for others to spring up out of the abyss of misunderstanding; to use voices, not guns, and peaceful actions, not tanks; and to open hearts to the possibility of peaceful coexistence with others. In this speech, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk asks us to open our minds to the idea that the way we treat animals is a reflection of who we are and helps us determine whether we have grasped the most basic problem facing us as we attempt to resolve conflict: a lack of empathy for others who are not like us. It is an interesting exercise that requires us to confront our most ingrained prejudices, even as we challenge others to confront theirs.

    Why is this noteworthy?
This talk was so powerfully convincing that it seems impossible that the need for it ever existed. How sad that it does! Bravo to the author.
Something for Everyone to Think About
What did you love best about Nonviolence Includes Animals?
The message was clear without being preachy
What did you like best about this story?
How is this different than the first question?
Have you listened to any of Ingrid E. Newkirk and Dennis Kucinich s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Well, yes, it was quite short.
    Any additional comments?
The message was clear without being preachy, but sadly few will probably listen to this. People, in general, don't seem to want to know, see, hear about the plight of animals and how we are directly involved in their suffering.

    Title: Plato's Republic
Subtitle: Books That Changed the World
    Author: Simon Blackburn
    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-26-07
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 38 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
In Plato's Republic, Simon Blackburn explains the judicial, moral, and political ideas in The Republic. Blackburn also examines The Republic's remarkable influence and unquestioned staying power, and shows why, from Saint Augustine to 20th-century philosophers, such as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Henri Bergson, Western thought is still conditioned by this most important of books.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rigorous and humble, admiring and dismissive: a clear and accessible introduction to philosophy's first superstar." (Kirkus)
"Plato's Republic...is loaded with perennial questions that every generation must struggle with." (The Independent)
    Members Reviews:
    Not about Plato
This is not a book about Platos Republic. It is a collection of political, historical and philosophical musings based upon the Republic. If you are interested in the insights of author Simon Blackburn, this book is for you. If you are looking for a book about Platos Republic, you should seek elsewhere. The book is very well read and recorded.
    Less than I expected
The commentary in this audiobook was not what I expected. I thought I was going to get a reading of Plato's "Republic" but instead this is a commentary on the book with very few quotes from the book. This audiobook is a chapter by chapter commentary by the author consisting of his interpretations of what he though Plato was trying to say. In that aspect, the commentary was reasonably good, but certainly less that a reading of Plato's book as I had expected.
    Please hold the politics
I liked the idea, and the early part of this book, in that it's a "biography" of a book, where the author discusses the book rather than reading the book itself. With a book as old and "deep" as Republic, this seemed like a good way to get some perspective on the work. Unfortunately, as the book goes on, Blackburn increasingly abuses his readers by indulging his bitter political bias against George Bush and Neoconservatives.
Blackburn is as entitled to his arbitrary political opinions as anyone else, but not in the context of a book purporting to give an objective analysis of subject matter far removed from modern day political partisanship.
Blackburn's assertion, for example, that that the ousting of an aggressive and murderous Dictator sitting on one of the world's greatest stores of wealth in Iraq, is somehow equivalent or analogous to the Athenian Greeks putting an apparently innocent, unobtrusive neighboring city-state to the sword because they could, is not only gratuitous, it is a whopping non-sequitur.
Since the entire reason for this book, given the structure I've described above, necessarily leaves the reader to trust the author to provide an objective, reasonable analysis of the subject material at hand, Blackburn's ongoing grinding of his political axe soon had me asking whether his take on Plato and philosophy was as overtly biased and arbitrary as his needlessly imposed political views. As the frequency of political harping increased as the book went on, I turned it off, for good, about two thirds of the way through.
If you are someone who genuinely wants to concentrate on and find good and trustworthy information on the title subject, you will be distracted at best, and probably disgusted, as I was, by this author's political self-indulgence.
I would suggest that if Mr.
