    Publisher's Summary:
In this final part to Schopenhauer's momentous and hugely influential work, his original and wide-ranging observations are as lively as ever. Though cast as a 'pessimist' by history, he is anything but that to read - and listen to. Here are the last supplementary comments his original work (published 1818), the fruit of decades of further reflection. These essays - some fairly substantial - include 'On Instinct and Mechanical Tendency', 'On Genius', 'On Madness', 'The Inner Nature of Art', 'The Metaphysics of Music', 'The Metaphysics of Love of the Sexes', and 'The Way of Salvation'. This translation by Haldane and Kemp omitted - for reasons of 'modesty' - a fascinating essay 'On Pederasty'. This has now been translated and read by Leighton Pugh and included here, offering a truly complete recording of Schopenhauer's opus magnus. And once again it is clear why Schopenhauer influenced a wide range of philosophers, writers and artists over the succeeding generations, including Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Samuel Beckett and many others.

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Stoicism is one philosophy that is not just theoretical in nature. It is something that you learn to adopt into your everyday life; its ancient wisdom is more relevant than ever today.
Dating back to around 300 BC in Athens, Stoicism was initially developed by Zeno of Citium. The essence of the philosophy is one of using grit and self-control as ways of overcoming destructive emotions. Despite the modern perception of the word Stoic, this does not mean to eliminate all kinds of feelings from your life. The goal, rather, is to transform your emotions. Stretching from the Hellenistic period to the 21st century, Stoicism has not lost its practicality in dealing with the problems of life, incorporating logic, self-dialogue, and meditation designed to keep your attention fixed on the present moment. It ensures a firm and consistent way of life that focuses on the choices you make so that failure ultimately leads to more success.
For anyone new to the Stoic philosophy, let this book guide you through everything you need to know in one easily accessible yet comprehensive introduction, from its origin and history to the core beliefs and principles. Most importantly, Stoicism: A Beginner's Guide to the Ancient Art, History, and Wisdom of the Stoic Philosophy focuses on why Stoicism is relevant to your life today.

    Short, sweet, to the point.
But overall, it is simply ok. This is a super light review of what Stoicism is, to the extent that saying that Sesame Street is a 'kids show with puppets'. I appreciate the fact that the book exists, because I bought it and then bought a few follow-on books because of this book, but I can't say that this book had any 'new' information. Two pros: The price is extremely 'on point' for the book, and you can read it in about 30minutes. Realities: Don't expect any detail in this book to answer all your questions, rather, it'll let you know if you want to buy the Seneca/Mediations books which are $20/pop. So in that regards, this book serves a pretty good purpose.
    Excellent!
Stoicism swims against the tidal wave of words and emotion based thinking currently pervasive in society. Stoicism is character and action based. It focuses on Virtue and Wisdom and Reason things nearly lost in todayâs hyperbolic vitriol filled media saturated environment that above all worships feelings whether reality based or not.
I recommend as an excellent stroll through a different world view.
    Nice Primer
Nice intro to the philosophy. Very similar to other texts I've read on mindfulness and existentialism, or longer treatises like "Man's Search for Meaning".

    Publisher's Summary:
At the time of his death, Italo Calvino was at work on six lectures setting forth the qualities in writing he most valued and which he believed would define literature in the century to come. Here, in Six Memos for the Next Millennium, are the five lectures he completed, forming not only a stirring defense of literature but also an indispensable guide to the writings of Calvino himself. He devotes one "memo" each to the concepts of lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity, drawing examples from his vast knowledge of myth, folklore, and works both ancient and modern.
    Members Reviews:
    Calvino manifesto
This book is a collection of talks on writing Calvino was preparing as a series of documents specifying some important keys of literature that he felt needed to be recorded as crucial elements of literary tradition. Indeed, in his essay "Visibility," Calvino brings up his concern for the future of imagination and literature in a world so full of prefabricated imagery, where images are provided rather than solicited. While his initial impulse was to write six lectures, he evidently reported at one point of his process that he had ideas for eight, but in the end he only completed five. In her introduction, Esther Calvino clarifies that she decided to keep the title true to Italo's original intention and publish the series under the original title, despite the missing sixth.
In the lectures themselves, Calvino provides the kind of insight and fascination with the making of literature that fuels so many of his best books. Rather than come across as a manifesto of his own brilliance, as the premise may sound, Calvino spends a lot of time in admiration of the work of other writers, from classics like Ovid and Dante to colleagues and contemporaries, like Francis Perec and Douglas R. Hofstadter. The lectures are of course sometimes punctuated with personal details about his own writing processes, but I found them very inviting and revealing about the ideas he was trying to point out.
Each lecture dedicates itself to an aspect of literature that Calvino finds crucial: "Lightness," or the aspect of language that speaks directly to a reader and is not always weighed down with intellectual metaphor but with direct communication; "Quickness," or the immediacy of literature - the way it cuts through random detail to get to the necessary; "Exactitude," or the precision of language (and when it needs imprecision); "Visibility," or the power of imagery to convey ideas; and "Multiplicity," or the complexity of content.
Calvino is a writer who has always presented a kind of fascinating enigma. His works is spectacularly visual, and while crucially uncategorizable in its sense of being not easy to nail down in the area of metaphor or theme (something that Calvino no doubt worked quite strenuously at, clear when he talks about a poem's meaning in "Exactitude" as being "not fixed, not definitive, not hardened into mineral immobility, but alive as an organism"), it is also quite accessible and always an enjoyable read. Calvino mastered the art of experimentalism that did not read as though one needed to be schooled in the traditions of literature to understand his intents.

    Publisher's Summary:
To know how to live, do we need God and religion, or does religion only produce wars, hatred, intolerance, and unhappiness? Does giving up God mean giving up morality, or can we finally live a peaceful and fulfilling life as atheists by following science and reason instead? Anthropologist Christopher Hallpike has spent a lifetime's research on the morality and religion of different cultures around the world and shows that trying to base a moral life on atheism and science actually has some very nasty surprises in store for us.
    Members Reviews:
Quite a nice takedown of supposedly scientific secularism
Hallpike delivers here an intellectually rigorous work that shows how common atheist strains of thought such as the meaninglessness of the universe and the denial of free will do not justify any of western atheists' professed liberal beliefs, even when such beliefs are otherwise worthy. It is sure to make one think hard about the implications of godlessness.
Slow to start but insane wind up to the tour-du-finish.
Starts out by espousing several different contradictory yet (by short sequences) logically correct perspectives on the topic.
I'll admit, knowing the flaws in most of them drove me up the wall early on, but stick with it! The author is only taking the time to start logical chains for many different potential reader points of view.
Get past the first couple of chapters and Hallpike suddenly whips out the cannons and goes full bore on a ride through history, covering philosophies, societies, law and politics with an incredibly accessible perspective on the cores, idiosyncrasies, origins and results of a very broad spectrum of ideologies and traditions.
It's an exceedingly rare work of fiction that can get my pulse pounding, and this is no fiction at all, so it should tally as high praise that it managed to raise my pulse high enough to get the endorphins flowing in the final few chapters! Highly recommended! Just don't let Hallpike fool you into thinking he believes any of the simplistic views he espouses early on. Keep grinding to get to the meat, then get a grip on your skull and hold on tight!
    Highly recommended
A remarkably fresh take on an old question. Hallpike brings his years of experience as an anthropologist to the bigger questions of what religion is, and how only some kind of religious-based metaphysic can really one to speak meaningfully of "good", "evil", and "morality". Along the way, some well placed shots are fired at the New Atheism, a few of whose denizens have paddled in the shallow end of this discussion. Hallpike writes with energy, passion, wisdom and humour: I really thought I'd considered most angles on this subject, but "Do We Need God to be God" helped me consider some fresh approaches to this question. Highly recommended.
Awesome exposition from an anthropological view
This sort of book requires discipline to read, but is well worth the effort. Many new and fresh ideas are presented.
    Refreshing look at real questions
This book combines a dispationately open mind viewpoint with rigorously logical arguments. I liked the way it focused on fects and the way things rally are even as it felt with the big questions.

    Publisher's Summary:
What is the philosophy of stoicism?
"To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school. It is to solve some of the problems of life not only theoretically, but practically." (Thoreau)
Stoicism is a branch of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the third century BC, though it was made popular by practitioners such as Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca. The philosophy primarily espouses that virtue (wisdom) alone leads to happiness, and that we don't have the power control all external circumstances though we can control our responses.
The central tenets of stoicism are that the world is full of unpredictable circumstances that are beyond our realm of control or influence. It teaches us the fragility of life and how quickly situations can change. Stoicism isn't about being devoid of emotions. It is about being steady, strong, and controlled in the face of circumstances that aren't in our control.
Contrary to popular perception that stoicism is about being emotionless, it simply asks a person to not let their emotions enslave them. Stoic philosophy is about not letting your emotions ride rational thought. It is about controlling passionate reactions in the face of adversity. According to stoicism, the fundamental cause of our discontentment is our impulsive reliance on reflexive reactions than logic. When we let emotional or passionate reactions rule out rational thinking, we pave the way for greater adversity.
Unlike other more complicated and theoretical philosophies and modern "feel good" pop psychology approaches, stoicism guides us in overcoming damaging emotions. As opposed to popular beliefs about stoic philosophy, it is an actionable philosophy that can be effortlessly applied in everyday living.
That is what this book is all about.
    Members Reviews:
Worth the $2 I paid for it. LOTS of typos!
Unbelievable number of typo's, but I still enjoyed the book quite a bit and got a lot out of it. Mostly it was a useful reminder of how to effectively, philosophically approach life in many ways. Many things I already knew but sometimes I forget and drift back into old patterns, so it's good to get a reminder.
    Highly Recommended
The book gives a perfect introduction to Stoicism and how to make Stoicism work for maximum benefit. If you are a serious student of modern stoicism, then this book isn't just to be read, but to be studied. It is necessarily difficult. I can a sure you that you will enjoy this book! Stoicism its something that I sways wanted to know more about and now finally thanks to this books I have obtained the knowledge.
    Fantastic Book.
Fantastic Book. Various strong tips. Stoicism is a branch of Hellenistic hypothesis built up by Zeno if Cilium in Athens in the third century BC. Best book for Stoicism. Extremely recommended to all buy this book.

    Title: Draw Your Weapons
    Author: Sarah Sentilles

Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-04-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
A single book might not change the world. But this utterly original meditation on art and war might transform the way you see the world - and that makes all the difference.
"How to live in the face of so much suffering? What difference can one person make in this beautiful, imperfect, and imperiled world?"
Through a dazzling combination of memoir, history, reporting, visual culture, literature, and theology, Sarah Sentilles offers an impassioned defense of life lived by peace and principle. It is a literary collage with an urgent hope at its core: that art might offer tools for remaking the world.
In Draw Your Weapons, Sentilles tells the true stories of Howard, a conscientious objector during World War II, and Miles, a former prison guard at Abu Ghraib, and in the process she challenges conventional thinking about how war is waged, witnessed, and resisted. The pacifist and the soldier both create art in response to war: Howard builds a violin; Miles paints portraits of detainees. With echoes of Susan Sontag and Maggie Nelson, Sentilles investigates images of violence from the era of slavery to the drone age. In doing so, she wrestles with some of our most profound questions: What does it take to inspire compassion? What impact can one person have? How should we respond to violence when it feels like it can't be stopped?
Draw Your Weapons stirs and confronts, disturbs and illuminates.
    Critic Reviews:
"With a stunning weave of ideas and images, Sarah Sentilles shows us the world we've broken, and she shows us how soldiers, prisoners, artists, thinkers - all of us - are, piece by piece, repairing it. Fearless, stirring, rhythmic, this book pulses with energy and is full of insights, dark yet ultimately hopeful." (Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City)
"Now more than ever, the world needs a book like Draw Your Weapons. With mastery, urgency, and great courage, Sarah Sentilles investigates the histories of art, violence, war, and human survival. In her haunting and absorbing narrative, the act of storytelling itself becomes a matter of life and death." (Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being)
"Draw Your Weapons is as much about peace as it is about war; it is as much about life as it is about death. Sarah Sentilles, with her passionate, clear-eyed prose and her brilliant, generous mind, confronts us with the realities of standing idly by in a world that urgently needs voices of peace and reconciliation. She puts real faces on the stories we hear all the time in the news and forget about. The stories in this book - about violence and love and endurance and vulnerability - are unforgettable, and they are very much the stories of our time. You will be riveted, educated, implicated, and changed by this book." (Emily Rapp, author of The Still Point of the Turning World)
    Members Reviews:
    A Must Read!
This is a must read! For us all. Ms. Sentilles thoughtful consideration of war and it's destructive place in our world and conflict resolution & peace in antithesis is remarkable. If you have a chance to hear Ms. Sentilles read from her book, do so.
