I was really wanted to like this book!!

Let me start by saying NOOOOO!!!! I have been waiting so long for a new Predator book to come out and was disappointed...

So when I think of Predators, BAD @SS is all I really thought needed be said and is the only reason we read Predator books! That being said maybe Tim Lebbon needs more input. So to most of us fans, Predators are super high tech, Huge hulking Hunters with really cool weapons! So Great and Scary in fact that Superman himself has a difficult time defeating one!

Mr. Lebbon portrays them as little more than red shirted Startrek extras! He has them die by the dozens; Running from battle getting chased across the Galaxy; Making deals with humans because the big bad xenomorphs are bullying them! Just generally weak.

It is 600 years in the future and the Predators are still using the exact same clunky technology as 1987?? Meanwhile the humans have developed cool spaceships, stealth suits that can do virtually anything, and countless other super weapons!

There was a time when killing a Predator was a challenge and took 300 pages to get it done! Tim Lebbon managed it in the first chapter!

To sum it up if you want to watch predators run away and hide. Oh wait they can't hide because their cloak technology sucks!

Wow

So, I almost didn't finish this book but this was my fault. I wasn't really listening to it the first time! I had to restart the book and pay attention. I'm so glad I did finish it because all the story lines tied in with each other so well by the end I was at the edge of my seat. I don't want to give anything up but I am a long time AVP fan and I was pleasantly surprised. I can't wait to read the next one! Please listen carefully. There are like four story lines going at once and it could be easy to get confused if you aren't really listening. It's definitely worth your undivided attention.

Hard to get into, but overall worth it.

Starts off very slow. A lot of boring 'historical' parts. Give it time it gets a lot better. Will be trying the second book. It's worth noting I'm a fan of the theatrical movies the aliens and predators. This might not be your cup of tea if your not.

Not the best in the series.

My least favorite kind of series installment...the one that doesn't really move the plot forward, but rather sets the stage for, one assumes, the next few books. I found the plot to be predictable, something that hasn't been true in the previous books. The set up for the next book leaves me hoping that the action and adventure will return and I'm willing to stick around for it.

If you are a fan of the series, give it a listen when you have an extra credit. If you haven't yet discovered Alex...don't start here.

So frustrating

I'm really getting sick of all the political corruption and injustice being core to these stories. Also sick of Verus's friends/allies turning on him. These books are just the same thing getting rehashed over and over again: someone's out to get Verus, politicians are corrupt, law enforcement sees him as the enemy no matter what he does, he has to make some bad choice to save his neck, he gets condemned and mistrusted for doing so. There's really no hope here, no joy, no humor, no justice or sense of good triumphing over evil, and loyalty only among the core Verus/Anne/Verium/Luna group. It's so frustrating to read over and over and over.

Thought it was good.

I read reviews of people who didn't really care for this book. I thought it was great I kept wondering how things were going to end and I couldn't figure it out like I could with a few of the other books. It kept on the edge a lot. I really enjoy Gilbart Jackson's narration a lot.

Disappointing *Spoiler Alert*

What disappointed you about Burned?

I don't know how to say this without spoilers, but how is it that the leaders of the magical community can just decide someone should be killed with no evidence and no trial and everyone is ok with it? There are pretty flimsy plot lines to justify wholesale murder. Every time Alex does something good he gets no credit, no benefit of the doubt and no help from any of the power hungry mages. What was the point of going through the whole plot if at the end a mage can just threaten to kill his loved ones and he capitulates? Why didn't they just do that at the beginning?

What could Benedict Jacka have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I have loved this series up until now. Burned just seemed so incredibly contrived. The story went in odd directions for Alex to rid himself and his dependents of a death sentence and then when he did everything he could they just threatened him into cooperation.

a totally enthralling budding romance

Zoey, a tough and independent young woman, who has learned to fight for herself growing up in various foster homes, is a Collector working for a secret part of the government called the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG). Together with her co-worker Daniel, with whom Zoey is desperately in love although he is considerably older and hasn't been reciprocating her advances, they track and collect fae. However, when Seattle is devastated by a powerful, magical electrical storm, Zoey's entire life changes, as she finds herself thrown together with Ryker, who is a Wanderer, a merciless and intimidating fae. Ryker hates humans. Zoey catches fae. Not a promising basis for a functioning relationship that both of them suddenly have to rely on.

City in Embers started out a bit strange in the way the characters, their backgrounds, and the world around them were introduced. It sort of threw you into the action and then took a step back, which was confusing at first, but in hindsight, actually worked well with regards to the plot development. I knew I had to listen to the second book long before finishing this one. I became so enthralled with the characters, the dystopian setting (cleverly linked to the author's Darkness series), and the mystery surrounding the DMG, Daniel and Zoey. I loved Sprig, the talking, narcoleptic monkey fae! His obsession with honey, his love for his cuddly toy, and some of his remarks were just absolutely adorable and so funny. There is no insta-love in this and no love triangle. Instead, there is a totally enthralling budding romance with a lot of sexual tension. Age wise, I think this is New Adult material and should appeal to anybody who enjoys paranormal romances. I've previously listened to Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series. If you enjoyed that series, you are bound to love this one, too.

The narration by Amy Landon was excellent. She was a very good fit for Zoey, and I was happy with her male voices, too. Good acting, in particular when voicing Sprig, without overdoing it. Nice pacing and delivery.

a long and ponderous tome

have read it before and liked it, but struggled to finish this time. The story contains so many characters and places that once you lose concentration you completely forget what you just heard.

also, there are some issues with the sound.

at some points i could hear the chapter name being read over and over

Audio glitches, tonally inappropriate music, uneven pacing (to be expected), overall great story, Great narrator.

For some reason part of the audiobook is weird. in that it repeats the title of the chapter throughout the whole chapter. which is annoying. otherwise, great book!

Great book. Shameful production.

The stories were great, but that's to Tolkien's credit and not the creators of the audiobook. Numerous times throughout the audiobook I encountered glitches in the track where suddenly the narrator would be repeating the title of the chapter or other pieces of the story in the background, thus resulting in near gibberish as the doubled tracks made it impossible to hear what was being said. I went back a few times to check if it had simply been my phone that glitched out but found that each instance of this glitch occurred consistently at the same timestamp. In other words it's a production error. And considering how many times this occurred, the production company have no excuse not to be absolutely ashamed of their work. Had it happened once I would have shrugged it off as a simple mistake, but when it happens just about a dozen times it becomes negligence. I recommend Tolkien's The Silmarillion, but I can't say I recommend this particular edition of the audiobook.

just dont

VG has a great premise, working from the first book he does a great job world building and an even better job of producing nothing. as part of a story this entire book, the events and everything can, should have been, reduced to about 3 hours. then he could have continued writing the story this promises and fails to provide.

I really like everything about this except for its severe lack of story and based on expectations from the first book, action. Don't bother with this until future parts have been released, this should have been the beginning of a longer book that just simply doesn't exist. The publishers should have held back till the fruit was ripe, Audible should have held off till more was available virtually immediately. instead if I want the actual story I am going to have to wait an undetermined amount of time, and this just doesn't convince me the waiting will be remotely worth it. I wish I could give the story 0 stars as there simply isn't one to rate.

This is not a novel

First, I want to start off saying that the first book in this series (Ink Mage) is amazing. A great 5 star novel. Wonderful world building, interesting plot, great characters (for the most part), and chalked full of fulfilled promises. This...I don't know what this is. A lengthy unedited first quarter of an unfinished first draft? There is no real plot (at most we're only given a small portion), no character growth, and absolutely no fulfilled...anything. I really can't imagine why Mr. Gischler decided to release this in its current state or how an editor could sign off on this as a whole. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the stereotypical, "this book has a cliffhanger so I'm going to whine about it not having a proper ending" review. I'm fine with cliffhangers. The giant problem here is that there wasn't enough story to have a cliffhanger. This ending was more of a: "plateausitter." We barely made it to the second act. Honestly, the best word to describe how I feel after 10 hours devoted to this piece, of writing, is: unsatisfied. I don't know if I'll read the 3rd installment; maybe after reading a lot of reviews first.

A triumph of a debut!

A terribly cunning display of the untrustworthy narrator (it's in the title, after all!) Baru is an incredibly engaging protagonist, and this fantastical political thriller keeps you guessing about loyalties, love, and what drives a person to ultimate treachery. This narrative weaves a spectacular warning to the readers: of social injustice, imperialism and the profound danger and power that comes from being truly alone in your mind. Machiavellian machinations in a spectacular feat of world building. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Great story, terrible reader

This is an incredibly incentive and gripping story. The audio book narrator, however, seems not to have been familiar with the English words "duchy" and "elided," which was frustrating and distracting.

Fantastic story, robotic narrator

Really enjoyed the story but the narrator sounds like a computer program and offers very little variance between character voices.

Read for detail explainations, skip otherwise

This is a hard one to recommend as it really depends on your taste. Especially since it's a long book, make sure you know what your getting into before starting.

As a child Baru Cormorant witness the Empire of Masks conquer her homeland. Not through war but with economics, trade policies and cultural assimilation. Baru vows to tear down this empire from the inside by pretending to be loyal to gain power. Will Baru be able to avoid corruption that comes with power, can she stand by and not only watch, but be the instrument of the empire in conquering another culture, or join their rebellion at the cost of her revenge. Will her outlawed secret desires be discovered?

It reads like a text book on colonialism. It covers in extreme details everything from economics, taxes & trade policies, cultural assimilation, diplomacy, naval & land battles, and family lineage. Often times it feels like the narrative is secondary to allow the author to show us the vast world his has created.

Personally, while I found most of the technical details interesting, and presented with purpose, it started to bog me down and become tiring the last third or quarter. I really liked the ending, I can't say anything about it without spoiling it but it reminded me of a classic story whose ending I also really liked.

Any additional comments?

I always look forward to Jodi Taylor's books about St. Mary's, and I think this will be one of my favorites. It's lighter than the last couple entries have been, but as always it contains the perfect mix of adventure, pathos and especially understated British humor.

Zara Ramm does a brilliant job of making Max and all her colleagues (co-conspirators?) come alive.If you're new to the series, start at the first book. You won't regret it!

Solid entry in the series

This book takes Max through the education of a new group of St Mary's trainees. As such, it's a bit episodic with various time periods offering chances for disaster. You learn new things about some of the continuing characters. Zara Ramm's narration as always is fantastic.

The whole scene that involved Joan of Arc, terrifying.

This would be a great movie series or animated series, but only if they leave the book alone and don't rewrite it.

Perfect marriage of great book and great reader

What made the experience of listening to What Could Possibly Go Wrong? the most enjoyable?

The layering of humor with edge of your seat adventure makes this book a winner. The humor keeps the sadder parts of the book from being too overwhelming, besides being laugh out loud funny. Additionally, Zara Ramm is the perfect voice for the main character, and she does the other characters beautifully, too.

What did you like best about this story?

The humor is the best part of the book. I was laughing out loud within the first two paragraphs, and there were many moments throughout the book when I really let loose and laughed. The baby mammoth part, for example, was so funny.

Which character as performed by Zara Ramm was your favorite?

There was no one favorite part, but the baby mammoth episode, as well as the witty banter back and forth between many of the characters, is just priceless.

Great Epic Fantasy!

I bought this book, first because Michael Kramer narrated it (I really like Michael Kramer!), and second because the publishers summary sounded good. I'm glad I did. This is a great story with twists and turns you couldn't imagine would happen. There isn't a lot of world building in it and I wish there would have been, because while I was listening to the book I really couldn't picture the world. Also, the book can be a little confusing at times, because there are lots of flashbacks to at least two different time periods, so be prepared. World building and flashbacks aside, it works, and it's very entertaining. As for the magic system, it has a very minor roll in book and it's hardly worth mentioning, so if your a hard core Magic Systems person you might want to pass on this one, or step out of your comfort zone, because this is definitely worth a credit!

Alright.

I got this because Kramer was the narrator. It was an alright listen but I had a hard time with the timeline. Without any noticeable segway the book would jump timeline and characters.

I found myself jumping back quite a bit to double check where a point would switch. Making things more confusing was the mutiple names for a character.

En Guard! A Coming of Age Story

Thrust into a violent world while still a teenager, a young man becomes a Knights apprentice to learn the skills needed to revenge the death of his family. The story is told through many, many flashbacks; sometimes flashbacks within flashbacks. This can become confusing and I found it difficult to multitask while listening to the book.

The story is at its best when the protagonist must make a crucial decision. Unlike many books, I could never guess if he would be swayed by emotion or logic and this led to some tense, heart pounding moments. At its worse, many scenes are repeated from different points of view and I became bored.

Poor, Poor Protagonist

If anything else this story if creative and imaginative on ways to beat the protagonist up. I did, in fact, like the story and the idea the library at Alexandra may exist in some alternative dimension. I just wasn't thrilled I had to go page after page watching this kid get used by his parents, brother, friends, and mentors. That's not very fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Subplots well pursued and covered. Eagerly awaiting volume two. Interesting use of steampunk type elements.

Outstanding - never a dull moment!

An intelligent, unique, and well written story! The narrator, Julian Elfer is possibly the best I've listened to ... As a former Drama teacher & current Teacher Librarian, I deeply appreciate the talent it takes to bring the story alive. Julian rocks it! Each character is distinct and believable. I didn't want to stop listening. It's one of those books that makes you take a longer route - walking or driving, appreciate long stoplights and disregard traffic jams - it's that absorbing. (oh and there is the occasional missed exit...)

A new spin on things. A nice easy read u can finish fast. Hope book two is as good and they bring the characters back.

don't give up too soon.

REALLY slow start. Truthfully, if I hadn't been on a long drive, I wouldn't have listened past the first hour. I'm glad I did as the story turnes out to be very interesting.

Love this story but.....

I wanted to SCREAM at the characters for not figuring out the "plot twist" when I did. Seriously frustrating when you figure out what's going on half way thru the book and everyone else is clueless. With all that being said... I still do enjoy this story. Like with a lot of second books this one was a bit slow and felt like a really big build up for book 3. I will definitely be reading that when it comes out:)

A little boring at first but overall wonderful!

This trilogy is off to a great start! At first it is a little hard to get into but once the story progresses you will be hooked!

Wonderful new series

I am always so glad to find a new author and this one is great. The two narrators are wonderful and really added to the enjoyment of the book. I am just sad I have to wait so long for the concluding book.

Even better than the first book

Loved it! It will be hard to wait for the next installment. This is so much more than a love story. I love how the world and story unfold through events and how the characters experience them. This book brings their worlds to the brink of war even as trust is challenged. This series has surpassed my expectations and I'm thrilled to have found it.
