    Publisher's Summary:
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment. Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naïve new emperor, and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend - and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne-or his life.

    Wonderful Performance
Story was exquisite and detailed. Plot was engaging and believable. Narration was superb. Office politics will never seem to be the same for any reader after this.
    Unexpectedly Great
This book is oddly, strangely, weirdly great. It's a fantasy only in that the characters are Goblins and Elves. It's more like a political intrigue story. Think of it as a cross between The Three Musketeers (without swords), The West Wing (light), and the part of Don Quixote where-SPOILERS- Sancho finally gets his Insula.
I don't think everyone will like this book as much as I did, but if you like the two books and the show mentioned above, you will.
    Amazing story!!!
What a wonderful book! It got me through a very tough week as all I could think about was when I could listen to the next bit of it. the narration was excellent as well.
    Awesome!
I was delight to come across the audio for this book. I had read the book when it first became available and thought what a amazing storyline. It grabbed my attention and imagination from the very first page and did not disappoint. 5 Stars for the narrator, he did a superb job in his interpretations of all the characters, specially of the Goblin King, he set the perfect tone and pace. It was hard to walk away, if I could have listened to the whole story in one sitting I would have.
    Absolutely Wonderful
Maia is the disregarded half-goblin son of the Elvin emperor. The emperor and his three eldest sons die in an accident, leaving the unprepared Maia to assume the throne. He faces many challenges in court-whom to trust, the resentment of his father and brother's widows, learning court politics, choosing a bride, and making the right choices for himself and his empire. This is a wonderful story filled with intrigue and politics with a hint of romance. The protagonist Maia is very well developed and he makes mistakes without appearing stupid. The supporting characters are three dimensional and have interesting personalities and back stories. Kyle McCarley makes each person come alive with his or her own voice. Even without the explanatory text, the listener knows who is speaking based upon McCarley's narration alone.

    Witty and fun
If you could sum up A Symphony of Echoes in three words, what would they be?
    Fun time travel
Who was your favorite character and why?
Max of course. I love her sense of humor and wit. She's a lovable smart ass.
What about Zara Ramms performance did you like?
    Yes, very much
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I did save the last hour for when I got home from work.
    Any additional comments?
The author and narrator together tell a really entertaining story. The quick pace is a relief. We don't have to listen to tedious descriptions of a month long research team. It's just research this before we go on our mission, then... We jumped to the past.
Enjoyed This Second St Mary's Time Travel Book
After finishing the first book in this series I went ahead and bought the second. The second novel is a bit episodic, but because of the nature of potential time travel paradoxes the various plot lines all come together in a maddening but entertaining conclusion.
Based in the near future UK, St Mary's Time Travel institution, has a number of traditions, one of which is that a Historian (time traveling variety) gets to choose his or her last jump into the past before their retirement. In this case Maxwell, with her friend Kal Black, have set out to visit the London of Jack the Ripper on the night that Mary Kelly is mutilated and killed. Black is retiring from active duty. That night has a most surprising conclusion. But it's not by any means the conclusion of the book.
It's not a soft and fluffy book although at points I thought it was quite funny. It also has some pathos (that's where one star disappeared because I thought that particular character was a bit of a red shirt, although the author may redeem herself later considering how convoluted time travel plots can be.) There is also some sheer horror.
The narrator is, as I thought with regard to the first book, excellent. I'm hoping that she will also be reading the third book when it comes out on Audible.
I did wonder if the dodo birds were a nod to Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels.
I also bought the third novel on Kindle although it was not yet out on Audible. I would definitely suggest that these books be read in order. Now I'm jonesing for the fourth book.
    Great time travel sci fi
Would you listen to A Symphony of Echoes again? Why?
I'm sure I will. I'm going to read the whole series again, after I read the next two volumes.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mrs. Partridge, aka History (Goddess of).

    So much more than funny
It is hard to know how to characterize this and so many of Pratchett's other books in order to convey the desired impression which is, "If you have not already tried them, you really should read one right now." If a review mentions the goblins and trolls and werewolves and vampires, and the Leprechauns and, oh yes, the witches, it risks giving entirely the wrong impression. These have nothing in common with Tolkien and the least of them is far more human than your standard fantasy hero. If one refers to Pratchett as a brilliant humorist with a needle sharp wit, it suggests a self-conscious wordsmith who is too clever by half. Referring to his ability to crystallize the essence of human folly with deftly drawn plots which prick all our narrowest prejudices and suppositions with unerring accuracy suggests a tiresome agenda dressed up in borrowed whimsy.
Perhaps it is simplest just to say that his books are an accumulated treasure trove of wisdom and delight. This particular one is not the best place to begin exploring since it depends upon some familiarity with its forebears for complete appreciation. This is, after all, book 40. But you needn't go back to book one.

    Spectacular Introduction to "The Witcher"
I absolutely love this book. It is full of rich detail and vivid imagery. I can imagine myself right alongside Geralt as he goes from one amazing adventure to the next. I don't want to give away spoilers, so I will just say that I couldn't put it down. The world is so believable, despite the high-fantasy setting. It's a world similar to our own, but with magic and an array of majestic or horrifying creatures. The world is dirty and rife with evil and corruption, but with enough glimpses of goodness and light to give you hope for the future (much like our own world).
I read this via "immersion reading". I read the Kindle version (and sometimes the paperback version) as I listened to Peter Kenny's incredible voice-over. He is a master storyteller. I loved his changing voices and the life he gave to each character on the page.
The only critique I have would be the chapter for which the book is named after. "The Last Wish" is a thrilling and action-packed chapter, especially towards the end. However, Peter Kenny spoke the dialogue of Yennefer and Geralt a little too plainly during the action sequences. There is so much happening I would have expected him to at least change his pitch a little. I read the chapter on my own without the voice-over and let my imagination do it justice.
Aside from that, I will still say that Peter Kenny did an excellent job. I will not hesitate to get an audiobook he voices in the future. I will also move on the other novels in the series, once the "Sword of Destiny" is released as an audiobook. I hope Peter Kenny is brought onboard once again.
Also, as I wrote in the Kindle review, I wholeheartedly recommend "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" game. It's the greatest game I have ever played.
A rich world explored through vignettes
What did you love best about The Last Wish?
I enjoyed the richness of the world, the sense of history, the previous world events and social changes.
What about Peter Kennys performance did you like?
I felt the narration did not distract from the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found the audio a little disconcerting as the story jumps in time and location without preamble. In the book, there would be a new chapter to help you with the jump. At times I felt lost, particularly if I had taken a pause, it took me a while to figure out what was happening.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great world, well described. That said, it is a little different in style from more common fantasy stories. I found the concept epic in nature, yet the scenes were more like stand alone short stories. Not a bad thing, just different.
    Amazing
Second time I'm listening to this. I Love this series and Peter is doing an excellent job at reading it!
    engaging
    each story was quite engaging.

A knight of Cygnar follows a strict moral code. His integrity is beyond reproach. He holds himself to the highest standards whether dealing with friend or foe. And he values honor above all.
The year is 606 AR, and Cygnar has been sorely pressed by its enemies both at home and abroad. In Caspia, the conflict with the Protectorate is about to erupt into full war with the looming invasion of Sul. The Cygnaran military is desperate for soldiers with the skill, strength, and bravery to take up the devastating galvanic weaponry of the new Storm Division. In this climate, every soldier is valuable, even those fallen from the honor expected of a Storm Knight. A group of such men - thieves, drunkards, and worse - comprise the Sixth Platoon. All they need is someone to lead them.
Lieutenant Hugh Madigan, a peerless warrior knighted during the reign of deposed King Vinter IV, has spent years in obscurity, punished for his loyalty to the former king. Now he has been ordered back to the front and given command of the Sixth, his task to turn a platoon of miscreants into elite soldiers fit to be called Storm Knights. Time is short, and war is coming. One way or another, Lieutenant Madigan must lead his men into the storm....

After 150 titles, first review of a fantasy story.
What made the experience of listening to Into the Storm the most enjoyable?
So far, since I signed up to Audible I have listened to ~150 titles.I usually listen to "self help" books and wrote a few reviews for the best of them.
In between I listen to real good fantasy stories like: "The name of the wind", "Ender's game", "old mans war" and "the way of kings" all of which I found fascinating.
Still, it is my first time to come across a great story like this one:
The book is so short, yet, the plot so complicated with many unexpected turns.
I loved the characters and their evolution.
and I must admit I shed a few tears in the end.
Overall it is certainly one of the best books I ever read (if not the best).
    Warmly recommended.
    Niv.
    More Madigan's Malcontents!
If you could sum up Into the Storm in three words, what would they be?
    Bloody good time!
What did you like best about this story?
The comradarie between the men. The mix of fantasy, technology, and history.
What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Ray Porter is an Audio God. Said it before, and I will say it again. He doesn't read the story, he tells it to you. It's easy to get swept up in the action because of his pacing and intensity. Honestly, he is amazing,
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Sadly real life forced it into two helpings. There needs to be a sequel, I'm not done with Crispin, Raines, Pangborn, Thornie, and Headhunter yet. They are all interesting characters with much more to be revealed about their pasts.
    Any additional comments?
What a fast, furious and fun story. And moving too, in a couple of places. For a shortish story, the characters were very multifaceted and I would definitely buy any books featuring more of the Malcontents.
    Really great stuff.
Would you consider the audio edition of Into the Storm to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version yet. However, it will be tough work topping Ray Porter's performance.

    Love this version
This is my second time reading/hearing this book, and I'm sure it won't be the last! Thinking about rereading "wicked" after listening to the interview at the end.
A new spend on something old.
I have enjoyed both of the booked I have listened to by this author. They are refreshingly different and relatively clean.
    A good listen.
    Not as good as Wicked
Bought this because I enjoyed Wicked. Slow at first, finally builds to an okay book. This reminds me of a hurried sequel movie that is rushed to get out while the name is still marketable.
    Bored
I listened for one hour...could not get into it...very wordy to get to the interesting part, so gave up.
don't expect another story of OZ.
After reading His other books based in the land of oz I was looking forward to this new story. But unfortunately I was disappointed this is not up to its former glory in story telling

    Critic Reviews:
"The action is fast and smart, playing with thriller conventions so that while [listeners] get excitement they also are encouraged to think about what magic might mean in human terms. A superb book in an outstanding, provocative series." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Great book. Action packed and fun.
This is the third book in this series. I have to say that the Alex Verus series has quickly become one of my favorites. Taken is another strong entry for Mr. Jacka. This book, like the others, is stand-alone but does slowly build on the history of the main characer.
The world is complex and well-developed. The magic system is well thought out and makes sense without an inordinate amount of suspension of disbelief being required. The good guys are likeable and you want to see them succeed. The bad guys are truly evil and you look forward to see them getting what's coming to them.
I love the Verus character. He is the dark, bad-ass Harry Dresden thinks he is. Verus tries to do right, but will not hesitate a bit to kill someone in cold blood in order to survive. This brings a level of realism, and the more you learn about the protagonist the more sense his outlook makes.
This is a fun, action packed book. It doesn't have all the humor and pop-culture references most urban fantasy novels have. I think that is a good thing as it makes you focus more on the story and what is happening. It was a nice mystery that is definitely worth a credit.
Each Book Makes Me Love This Series More
I wanted to love the first book but I only liked it enough to give the second book a try. By the end of book 2 I was hooked. Taken, the 3rd book of the series, introduces new characters and even more intrigue, action, and suspense. Alex Verus is a complex human being...like the rest of us with an intriguing ability we only wish we had.
    No Longer In Denial
Alright, I guess I have to admit that I am hooked on this series. I enjoy it because it has well developed characters set in a realistic magical world. The story lines are full of action and interesting characters. There are also no happy endings. Alex may survive to live and fight another day, but, that doesn't mean that everything is wrapped up with a nice neat bow. This makes the story realistic and very likable.

    Boring, Boring, Boring
    Short and sweet--
The writing is VERY repetitive and often juvenile.
The narrator has a singsong delivery and doesn't offer much distinction with character voices. So far as I can tell, he doesn't completely butcher the Japanese names and vocabulary. He gets an extra star for that.
After about three hours I could no longer tolerate listening.
I have over 650 books in my library.
This is the only book I've ever returned.
    better than the movie!
loved the details in the audio book version - missing from the movie version. mix of history, fantasy and Japanese culture/ folklore.
    Definitely recommend it.
    Book written for the movie
This story has its roots in a historical event and is an above average story in my opinion. The book does have differences from the movie but I think the book was commissioned by the studio for the movie. In general I think books written this way suffer but this one had a good base to start with and it seems to be hard to find a book that deals with honor and loyalty.
    Great
Great book for long trip will keep you on the edge of your seat all the time

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
After reading Mogworld, I was hopeful that Yahtzee Croshaw would develop into a decent writer. He has made some steps towards refining his technical skills. I noticed less word repetition and fewer abuses of adverbs in dialogue attribution (though they're still there). Unfortunately, this is a book with only one joke and it wears out very fast.
I had the opposite experience with this book as I had with Mogworld. Croshaw's first book starts out slow and stilted and builds into something humorous and meaningful. This book elicits chuckles right away but they quickly subside into a long, awkward silence. Each of the secondary characters has only one trait, a problem that is continuously highlighted by Croshaw's reading as he gives each of them a voice and never, ever varies his delivery to fit the situation. The main character doesn't even get one defining trait. His behavior and abilities are erratic and function as the plot demands. I got the impression that the problem was the character never developed a strong enough voice of his own and so Croshaw kept slipping back into his own voice while trying to write him; hence why he is at times the keen sardonic observer, the moral compass, the clueless idiot, and the selfish bastard with no moral sensibilities at all. All these characteristics could be worked into an arc of some sort but that's not the case here. This is showcased by an early scene in which the main is instructed to save a spider, he lists all the reasons he's not going to do so, then spontaneously changes his mind and becomes powerfully and instantly attached to the stupid thing for no discernible reason. Sometimes the main knows just what to do to save the situation, sometimes he's a helpless bunny, and sometimes he magically knows things he would have no possible way of knowing. It's just bad writing. Also, I finished this book only a few days ago and I can't remember anyone's name except Mary the spider.
This book needed to be half the length. There is no reason for it to go on the way it does repeating the same jokes over and over. There is a sense that this book was only written to cash in on the apocalypse craze and not because Croshaw felt any particular interest in the subject. I can only hope he takes his growing skills and applies them to a subject he cares about. Here's hoping he tries his hand at horror next.
    Loved It
What made the experience of listening to Jam the most enjoyable?
The story was unique and imaginative. I was kept on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. The story is well written, and even with the clues and foreshadowing I was not able to guess the truth.
What other book might you compare Jam to and why?
I have not read any books that compare to Jam. It is very unique.
What does Yahtzee Croshaw bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Yahtzee's performance was excellent. His voice acting made the story come alive in my imagination.
