For Zander and his crew, life is a high-stakes game worth playing. In this second book of The Cruisers series, the term gifted and talented takes on a whole new meaning for Zander, Kambui, LaShonda, and Bobbi - a group of misfits who attend Da Vinci Academy, a school in Harlem for only the brightest kids. Their friend Sidney Aronofsky is considered one of the best chess players in the city. When Sidney is arrested for trying to buy drugs, it comes as a shock to those who know him, especially the Cruisers. Sidney loves chess, but the pressure never lets up, and he wants out. my gril love this book
great book for my 11yr. old girl , she read it within 2 days of recived it on chirsmas .
Sindey is the best chess player in the school
âWhy would you even start drugs in the first place?â
The book tells the story of a kid named Sidney who is a seventh grader at Da Vinci Middle School. Sindey is the best chess player in the school, but gets involved with drugs through a local dealer. Everyone thinks that Sindey is a good kid, but become very shocked when he is arrested for buying drugs. A group of friends, who call themselves The Cruisers, try to help. They talk to Sidney but he starts doing drugs again because the pressure of being one of the brightest kids and best chess players is too much. Sidneyâs friends go to a cop to take him to a Scared Straight program. So now we wait to find out if Sidney chooses drugs or school and chess?
Sidney: One of the best chess players in the country and smartest kids in his school. He gets started with drugs to help him cope. Sidney is a very nice kid who sticks up for what he believes in no matter what the cost.
Mr. Culpeper: Assistant Principal at a school called Da Vinci. Very mean attitude.
Noah: Main character: Very nice. Seventh grade. Tryâs to help Sidney.
Zander: One of Sindeyâs friends. He is very unreasonable and does not usually do stuff out of the kindness of his heart.
Donât do something bad just because it makes you feel good. Itâs the theme because one of the top chess players in U.S. ruins his life with drugs. I think this a good theme because it teaches young children to do the right thing and never to try or do drugs. The story shows how doing drugs not on affects you, but it also affects everyone around you.
I think this is a good book. It kept me wondering what was going to happen to Sidney and what choice he was going to make. I would recommend it to anyone who is young to teach them to never do drugs.
A thoughtful novel about the perils and pressures facing gifted middle-school students
Harlem's Da Vinci Academy for the Gifted and Talented is a school for exceptionally bright kids. English is Alexander "Zander" Scott's thing. The eighth-grade student has a way with words and hopes to be a writer some day. With his parents divorced, he lives in Harlem with his beautiful mom, who scrapes by making a living as a model.
Zander and his friends call themselves the Cruisers.

    awesome!
I love this book! It's way better than the first and it's way more exciting. That's why I gave it 5 stars.
    My daughter is now hooked
My 10 year old daughter has never been a big reader but has fallen in love with this series. She loves that the characters are the same age as her. She particularly loves Cleo the Mummy. I'd highly recommend this for boys and girls since the boys would totally enjoy Resus the Vampire and Luke the Werewolf.
    A fab series for kids
My daughter loves this series. Its great to find it in digital form, as I had trouble finding it in paperback.
    Five Stars
    Great!
Even funnier than the first book
This second in the series of Scream Street is hugely entertaining and superbly presented. There are laugh out loud moments at the comedy horror situations. This is a great story filled with action and puns.
The presentation of the book is fabulous. Lots of brilliant black and white drawings slightly in the style of the 'Nightmare before Christmas' and greyed and scratched pages with lots of interesting spooky spiderweb, inksplat and paw print designs. It give the book a very spooky feel.
There are also 4 top trump type cards to add to those in the first book.
Twinkle the fairy was the highlight of the book in our house, an extremely funny new character. Doug the Zombie is a close second.
I think you really need to read the first in the series book to see how the 3 friends came to meet - a 10 year old werewolf and his friends the almost vampire and mummy but you could still read this as a stand alone story and enjoy the humour.
This series has a lot to offer in terms of hugely interesting characters, comedy horror and exciting storylines. The book as well as the quest storyline has a lot to say about friendship and doing the right thing to help others. It's fast paced, funny and ever so entertaining.
Highly recommended for 7+ and even though it's a childrens book I thought it was the funniest thing I've read in ages.

    A Mad Night
First, I have to tell you that the author is wonderful and the narrator is perfect. Her work was really, reallly, admirable and I think she got her sole into this book. I have much to say about each of the three girls: I pittyed Bliss at least in the begining, admired Jolin, and loved Meg. The processes they delt with were very reall. But such things can not be solved in one night- mad as it might be. You can understand a few things, but not change completely. But again, even if the author made them change and find a way to get along, she did it in an almost realistic way. She created three original complecated carichtors. That was good. I stayed up all night to see what was going to happen. Highly recommended, and not only for teens.

    Fun, Fun, Fun
    Any additional comments?
Three teenagers come together for hi-jinx and healing one one very eventful night. With sympathetic, distinct characters, great pacing, nice humor, and some heartfelt moments too, this was a very good listen.

    The cover was completely different
The book is in good condition, but the cover was completely different than the one pictured.
Its winter time for the carter house girls
apart of a great series and adds a good twist to the plot.
With things getting sorted between DJ and Conner it create drama with a clique a the school leaving DJ having to defend herself and Conner trying to forget it all
    Love it
This is the 3rd book in the series if I'm not mistaken, and again, I just love these series of books! It's so relatable and its like regular stuff that usually happens in life. It has good life lessons too, definitely reccomend.
    Different
In this book, you see more of the Christian side of DJ. Also in this one, Eliza's mean side shows a lot. In the beginning it's about their fashion show and half of the middle book/end is more focused on them going to Vermont. Also in this one there's a huge shocking ending.
    Melody Carlson is amazing!

    Gift for daughter
My daughter loves this series and I can relax with it having a good moral to it instead of her reading trash.

Good contemporary Christian book for teens
Pressure rises for eighth-grader Yasmin Peace in Believing in Hope by Stephanie Perry Moore (Yasmin Peace Series). Her family continues to adjust to the loss of her brother through suicide, while her divorced mother struggles to meet the financial and emotional needs of the family. In addition, her other brother, Yancyâa good student and normally trustworthyâhas begun disappearing.

To her surprise, many girls who seem self-assured have their own private struggles.

    Really good!
In this second book of the Yasmin Peace series family tensions and school unrest sore to a fever pitch. A school counselor starts a club for 8th grade girls: The LIGHT club, which deals with major issues: gangs, depression, teen suicide, self-esteem, etc. Yasmin discovers that there is hope on the other side of every obstacle--if she holds on to her faith.
This series is really good and it's a good change from the princess type series the author usually writes. It's a refreshing change to see a girl who isn't upper middle class and has to struggle finicially and deal with real problems. The LIGHT club is portrayed accurately, I used to attend Kendrick Middle School, where the real LIGHT club is and I'm glad to see it portrayed in this book. Yasmine is a good role model for any teens and unlike Payton Skyy or Carmen Browne (the author's other "princess" lead characters) Yasmin doesn't seem to be to stuck on herself. So other then the cheesy way the author writes herself in the book and cheap pops her upcoming movie on the Payton Skyy series, it's very well-written.
    Keeping It Real
This book explores the real issues facing families that live in the lower income places - commonly known as the projects. Sometimes we may feel that the issues facing young teens and poorer families differ from those facing the lower and upper middle class. All families, regardless of income, have real issues to deal with.

But as sinister events begin to unfold, Allie realizes she's got a destiny far bigger than she ever imagined - If she can just survive everyday life, in the meantime.

Had a hard time with the reader
The story was fine with some quirky humor. It was told in first person point of view from the perspective of a 14 year old girl from Washington state. The reader seems to be a middle aged woman from the south, maybe the Carolinas? Honestly it bothered me through most of the story. Also there was this random music that played a few bars every once in awhile. What on Earth was it for? At first I thought it was a weird stupid clue, but then it was just annoying
