Awsome Book

Summer at Forsaken Lake focuses on a twelve year old Nicholas who is accompanied by his two younger sisters to spend the summer with their uncle at Forsaken Lake. Digging around in their uncle's house he and his siblings uncover an incomplete movie made by his dad as a kid. The discovery this leads Nicholas to finding out about a ship wreck that his father was blamed for and caused one of his dad's friends to get injured. Soon after that, Nicholas meets Charlie, a girl who is known for her incredible curveball, and they become good friends. They soon find out that Nicks father and Charlie's mother dated as teenagers and Charlie's mom was the one who was injured because of the ship wreck. Though out the summer, they aimed to find clues that proved Nicholas father was wrongly accused.

Beil has done a great job of creating a warm small town atmosphere. The story was loosely based on Biel's childhood experiences. Both Biel's childhood home and the story were located on a lake in Ohio. Nicholas and Beil had similar summers fishing, sailing, and playing baseball.

Summer at Forsaken Lake is a delightful old fashion read and perfect to round out the summer. This book was a leisurely read with no intense themes, but kept me engaged by throwing in new elements of the mystery consistently. While the plot is a little elementary, Beil compensates by including mature themes and vocabulary, making the book just right for middle readers.

Simply amazing

In this book, beil crafts a novel full of mystery, suspense,romance and adventure. This book was a great read and kept my eyes open to the very end. Nicholas and Charlie have to investigate the local legend, the seaweed strangler and uncover their parents' connection to it. It takes place in a small town in ohio with a great and friendly community. This took me down memory lane and i wished that i had had an amazing summer like these kids. Furthermore, i would like to commemorate the author and encourage him to please write a sequel. This was simply an amazing book!

A Fun Summer Read

This was a fun read for my 9 year old grandson and I over there summer. The mystery plot of the story was enticing and we learned a lot about sailing. I would recommend it to preteen readers who like mystery stories.

A Journey To India To Meet The Past And Relatives

No matter how far away people live or travel from one another they remain connected to one another. Our past, our present and our future seem to fight against the idea that people should remain apart from one another to build a tiny more personal world with people like themselves. When Mira travels from America to India to visit her Indian relatives, she feels an immediate connection. She feels the keen desire to flow backward into the pasts of her loved ones who seem no longer close to one another. So she secretly takes a bundle of her mother's letters from a relative, Anjali., all the way to India with her.

Although she stays with her super energetic cousin, Priya, she feels an immediate moment by moment connection to Janu. He seems her soul mate. Janu seems more like the old India while Priya is definitely a part of modern India with her short, pink spiked hair and her lack of desire to wear a sari. Priya kept me grounded through the novel. Perhaps, she kept Mira grounded too. India has progressed while some areas remain the same: There are malls. There are zooming, speeding cars and there are teens like Priya who wear a long beautiful plait which is really a wig. Then, there are still the beautiful ancient temples. There is still the Goddess Kali with three eyes. It's all there, and it all was waiting each day for Mira to make a choice. Will I step into the old world or the new? By the way, you can Skype in India too which surprised me.

Too soon it's time for Mira to return to America. Of course, she doesn't feel she's seen everything or gotten as far as she desired in to the past secrets of her family. Someone says to her that perhaps it's not meant for us to finish everything but the lesson is to leave some things unfinished. In India, everything and everyone has purpose and meaning. Therefore a lemon lost in a pocket is not thrown aside. It will become a precious memory among the many others Mira became acquainted with while visiting this land of contrasts.

Sita Brahmachari in Jasmine Skies made me want to read more novel about India. Like Mira, I wasn't ready to return home. I especially loved Janu. He seemed so romantic. Like changing the lens in a camera, India seems like a changing sunset which color and beauty all around. Thank you to NetGalley for this book.

Highly enjoyable children's fantasy

As an adult, sometimes I like to listen to children's audio books when Im in a more easygoing mood or need a mental break from more complex plots. With that said, Im still surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. This book is a playful version of all the serious fantasy novels out there. I love the fantasy genre and have listened/read so many that some of the plots have become predictable. While this ones happy ending is just as predictable, the humor and hilarious characters make this one really worth a go.

My Royal Pain Quest

The book was wonderful when my daughter & I first read it several years ago. The audio book is fantastic! The narrator really makes the story & characters come alive. He also matches the voices to personalities. This is a gem!

More of a war drama than love story.

Interesting war drama, if that was what you were looking for. However if you were looking for a romance, than you will be disappointed. The book comprised of 95% war, 5% love.

Very enjoyable story

This is written by my favorite police procedural author. I was surprised to find these stories translated and decided to try them. I like them a lot.

My New Boyfriend

Being a Henning Mankell fan there is nothing but high praise for the way his books grab your interest on the first page and

then pull you through until the last. His characters and plots are so different than the American mystery types that I am very

pleased that I took a chance on a new- to- me author. His own character Kurt Wallender is such a fallible human being that

you want to help him when the chips are down.

I do like very much the stories that Mankell tell us, and I read this one of Joel Gustafson stories. But I prefer all the time the Inspector

Wallander's stories and I read all of them. I would like ask to Mankell that writes more stories with him, but I know that this author

make Walllander died.

I've really liked everything else I've ready by Henning Mankel. You can't like them all, I guess.

It seemed as if the prose in this was less well-developed and mature than in the other Mankell books I've read. It's a boy's coming-of-age story, maybe the style was intended to be in the voice of the adolescent boy. If so, it sort of turned me off. It won't stop me from trying others by the author, because this is the only one I haven't liked.

Brendan Buckley's Back: Great Realistic Fiction for Tween Boys

Brendan Buckley's Guide to the Universe by Sundee Frazier has been a book I have recommended to students for a few years. I feel like some of my students could really relate to Brendan, who has a white mother and African American father. Brendan's mom has no relationship with her parents because of her decision to marry a colored person, and although Brendan doesn't really know any different, there is a relationship with his maternal grandparents that he is missing out on.

Although Frazier never meant to write a sequel to this novel, Brendan Buckley is back in Brendan Buckley's Sixth Grade Experiment. In this novel, due out in January, Brendan meets a girl who is just as interested in science as he is.The two team up to enter a science competition and find a very smelly idea to explore. Although Frazier did resolve some of the issues with Brendan's maternal grandparents in the first book, this installment has Brendan wondering if he and his father can ever have a close relationship. He feels as though his dad doesn't "get" him and the two clash about a variety of things. And, Brendan is growing up. As a sixth grader he is a bit more mature than he was in the first book and starting to think about girls.

I like Brendan as a male role model, and I feel like he is a great character for my boy readers who enjoy school and are more academically inclined. Brendan is a boy much like them.

Frazier included a lot of scientific information she wanted to highlight at book's end. Since Brendan is a scientist, I am sure that Frazier either enjoys the subject herself, and/or also did a great deal of research for this novel.

While Frazier initially stated that she had never planned to write a sequel about Brendan, I am glad she has, and would be happy if future novels about this intelligent boy were to be written.

I have a marvelous middle grade book to share with everyone, Brendan Buckley's Sixth-Grade Experiment, by Sundee Frazier. It hit shelves on Jan. 10, 2012.

The Story: Brendan Buckley is starting his first year in middle school. He has a whole slew of friends, plus a new one, Morgan. He meets Morgan, a previously home schooled girl, at a rock club meeting. Now, she will be going to his school too, and he is not sure what he thinks about it.

At school, Brendan and Morgan get paired up to work on their science project. Together, they come up with a biomass experiment involving cow manure. As they work together, buds of romance begin.

At home, Brendan has other problems. His dad always seems to be gone, either studying for school or on shift as a police detective.

Love on the Lifts

Would you listen to Love on the Lifts again? Why?

I love this book so much whenever I get sad or down or any bad emotion I pick up this book and read it. And now all I have to so is slip my headphones on and I'm laughing and people look at me like I'm insane but it doesn't matter to me because I'm so happy listening to this book. The main character develops as the story goes on and I could see some of myself in her. This book has one or two moments when you'd love to knock some sense into her but you understand why she makes those choices. this allows the character to be more real and relatable to. This is one of my comfort books and just for the hell of it. I'd recommend this book to most people I know especially if you love a good romantic comedy or any kind of romantic book.

I have a pro this book agenda. It was excellent.

There was some over the top stuff in it and the symbolism was a bit thick, but it's directed at teenagers, and people often underestimate their ability to understand the meaning of things.

Despite that, the story was interesting, the characters were fun, and the writing was quite good. I am becoming a big fan of authors who use IMing in their writing. Done well it can be really effective. Of course, done wrong it can just be horrible. It's done right here, and it moves the story along and makes some interesting points.

The narration is excellent too. I've read this narrator in other things, and I always enjoy him. He is just consistantly good at capturing tone and humor that might get missed with another narrator.

Overall, definately worth the credit.
