Not a great reading experience.

While I ended up kind of appreciating what Ghost Time tried to do, I really cannot recommend it to anyone.

Ghost Time commits the cardinal sin of YA literature - it spends its entire (and frankly excessive) length setting up a series rather than focusing on being a compelling, worthwhile read within itself.

Several mysteries are established and many, many characters are introduced only for the book to end on a cliff-hanger.and the second in the series isnt due for publication until TWO YEARS after the first!

This indulgent and self-important attitude towards reader experience seemed to permeate the novel with its meandering pace and disengaged tone.

As I said, I didnt mind Ghost Time in the end but it was a hard fought battle to get there and I doubt Ill have the patience to sit through the next book if/when it ever arrives.

Finally, I strongly recommend checking out an audio sample or maybe picking this up in paperback if you do want to check it out.

The language is intolerable, especially at the beginning.

So Im like, OMG, right? OMG, I said, Right?

And he was like, right, you know? Right, he said.

Seriously, OMG, right?

Yes, that is literally how it reads every sentence punctuated with rights, txtspeak, you knows and other verbal ticks. And for some reason the author has all the characters think what theyre going to say and then still put it in as dialogue immediately after!

So Im going to tell you I dont recommend this book, I dont recommend Ghost Time, I say.

Now, if I can only acquire the complete trilogy! It is incredibly elusive. It has been years in completion Not sure what was the hold-up.

Like a lot of Jarvis fans

Here's a book that I purchased to re-read. Like a lot of Jarvis fans, I initially read this near a decade ago and I only found out about the sequel recently. I love this book because it has cool ideas. The werlings are wonderful and I want to find out all about their culture. Gamaliel is very easy to identify with, especially if you're a person with anxiety. I found myself really loving his interactions with Finnen, who's also a very compelling character. Finally, Frighty Aggie is a fantastic monster! That's it for the characters I liked. The rest of the cast felt pretty flat and I just couldn't bring myself to really care about their struggles; not even the main villain was very compelling.

I like the ideas better than I like the characters. The trilogy is essentially about a power struggle of various fair folk, and Jarvis has invented his own race. I kind of wish the story would have been more about the werlings dealing with each other than the werling dealing with the fairy queen. There is gore there, but's rather toned down compared to The Deptford Mice series. The series goes on to be, like, kind of love letter to shape-shifting, so if you're into shapeshifting or a Jarvis fan, I recommend it.

THE FLAME IN THE MIST

What did you like most about The Flame in the Mist?

Everything! The main character is an extradonary person. She is resourceful, brave, and also sympathetic to those who are weak. She is completely human, with human weaknesses, but with the strength to rise above that to overcome and defeat evil.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes: when Gemma knew she had to leave everything she loved, that made her feel safe, and go back to fight the evil that held her captive for so many years, and she still had the strength of character, the courage to go, in spite of her own fear And also in the end, when she conquered the evil inside her to fight the terrible evil threatening everything she loved and valued.

In Defiance of Hitler, the Secret Mission of Varian Fry - the "American Schindler"

Amazing story of Varian Fry, the "American Schindler" that rescued over 2,000 people from Nazi-occupied France in 1940. The 2009 Orbis-Pictus Award Winner, I selected and read this book for my Children's Literature class at The University of Texas at Dallas. I was thrilled to receive a response e-mail from the Author, Carla McCafferty, after writing to congratulate her on the story of Varian Fry, one that she so capably brought to life with vivid and historically correct detail.

Geared to middle-school age youngsters, McCafferty's book thrilled the socks off this 55 year old Baby Boomer. A very good read! *****

A great read!!

When I was in college I had a very close Sephardic friend who was born in Paris in January 1939. She told me her family had escaped Europe on a false Portuguese passport and that she was a distant relative of the famous Italian painter, Modigliani.

I don't know for sure if Varian Fry helped her family, but one mention of a Modigliani (a fleeing Italian socialist) is mentioned in the book.

Fry gave up his job and his marriage, and was willing to give up his life, to help get refugees away from Hitler.

This book is a fascinating portrait of a great man, his life and his work, as well as a fascinating addendum to WW2 history for a maven like me.

Fry, a young New York journalist, an average person, whose knowledge of espionage comes from movies, finds himself on a startling war-time mission. Secrets, Snakes and Civility

What a wonderful young adult audiobook. Very well written with some nice twists and turns. Fans of mystery novels and young adult fiction alike will enjoy this one. It is an easy read with an over view of the seedier side of London and the cruelty endured by children at the hands of adults. It is nice to see how the children adapt to the poverty of the time and still have confidence in themselves.

Help! The Book Won't Let Me Go

Mr. Bajoria is most definitely a crafty writer and storyteller. If you think this book just a young adult adventure, stop thinking so much and try relaxing and enjoying the ride. The Printer's Devil has taken me on a wondrous journey of ole London and its jack-the-ripper era atmosphere. The story currently has me held hostage in its pages and is speedily rolling toward a crashing conclusion. what makes this bookknapping so odd is that I've become enchanted with my captor and choose to continue onward, forestalling any rescue attempt. My what a writer.

Great Read

This is not the sort of book I usually read, but one day while digging through a bargain bin I came across The Printer's Devil and it's sequel, The God of Mischief. They were cheap, so I picked them up. Now, I'm very glad I did so.

The Printer's Devil takes place in 19th century London. It's a YA adventure story about 12 year old Mog Winter, who gets involved in a dangerous plot involving thievery, deceit, and murder. The point of view is, for the most part, Mog's. Mog is a charming character whose adventures make for an enjoyable read.

Why is there a camel in London, and what makes it so precious people are willing to kill to get their hands on it? Who is the man from Calcutta, and what truth does he know about Mog's past?

You'll have to buy the book to find out.

Mog Winter is an orphan. He is also the printer's devil, or the youngest apprentice of Mr. Cramplock, the printer. "The Printer's Devil" is set amid 19th century England when the East India Company is the biggest around and London's dockyards are bustling with sailors, foreigners, thieves and criminals of all types. One night when Mog and his dog Lash are delivering a handbill to a customer, Flethick, he comes into Flethick's house and finds him and his friends in a room full of mysterious, intoxicating smoke babbling about Calcutta and India. He knew his mother had died giving birth to him on a ship to Calcutta. Leaving the house, he ran home, and on the way, he nearly bumped into a man with dark skin and wild, white eyes. Running faster, he reached his home, the apartment above Mr. Cramplock's shop and secures the door. At a local tavern he hears a notorious con man talking about the ship, Son of Calcutta, recently docked at the London Docks.

A fascinating novel filled with details of 17th century life

As the only child of a widowed bookseller in 17th century London, twelve-year-old Meg Moore stands to inheirit her father's entire estate.
