Together, they embark on a quest to find and steal an ancient incantation, written on three indestructible stones and hidden millennia ago, all to rescue Daniel's kidnapped mother. Promising but failed to engage.
I mistakenly expected a story about superpowers and I liked the idea of blending that with more mythical quest sort of story.
Chasing Power was actually based around magic and magical abilities and while I enjoyed the Deep South voodoo elements, I generally dont enjoy books about witchcraft.
The premise was still interesting though and the characters had lots of potential.
Unfortunately, Kayla and the rest of the cast ultimately failed to engage me enough to get through the messy third act.
Chasing Power descended into anti-climactic melodrama with inconsequential villains that left me checking the time remaining.
Chasing Power wasnt terrible but it will be forgettable.

Can one mistake destroy the chance of a lifetime? A girl discovers there are many ways of being true in this magnificent ode to handwritten letters and the shining power of friendship from the author of "Dovey Coe," set in the Appalachian mountains of 1920s North Carolina. One true friend. Someone shining. That's all twelve-year-old Arie Mae wants. But shining true friends are hard to come by deep in the mountains of western North Carolina, so she sets her sights on a cousin unseen, someone who lives all the way away in the big city of Baltimore, Maryland. Three unanswered letters later, Arie Mae learns that a group of kids from Baltimore are coming to spend a summer on the mountain. Arie Mae loves her smudge of a town--she knows there's nothing finer than Pa's fiddling and Mama's apple cake, but she also knows Big City folk might feel differently. How else to explain the song catcher ladies who have descended upon the village in search of "traditional tunes" and their intention to help "save" the townspeople? But when the group from Baltimore arrives, it seems there just might be a gem among them, one shining boy who doesn't seem to notice Arie Mae wears the same dress every day and prefers to go barefoot. So what if he has a bit of a limp and a rumored heart problem--he also is keen about "everything "Arie Mae is keen about, and has all the makings of a true friend. And so what if the boy's mother warns him not to exert himself? He and Arie Mae have adventures to go on! In between writing letters to her cousin, Arie Mae leads her one shining friend on ghost hunts and bear chases. But it turns out those warnings were for a reason...

Because some Celtic stories won't be contained in myth.... A little magic has always run in 16-year-old McKayla McCleery's family - at least that's what she's been told. McKayla's eccentric Aunt Avril travels the world as a psychic for the FBI, and her mother can make amazing delicacies out of the most basic of ingredients. But McKayla doesn't think for a second that the magic is real - it's just good storytelling. Besides, McKayla doesn't need magic. She recently moved to beautiful Star Valley, Wyoming, and already she has a best friend, a solo in her upcoming ballet recital - and the gorgeous guy in her physics class keeps looking her way.
When an unexpected fascination with Irish dance leads McKayla to seek instruction from the mute, crippled janitor at her high school, she learns that her family is not the only one with unexplained abilities. After Aunt Avril comes to Star Valley in pursuit of a supernatural killer, people begin disappearing, and the lives of those McKayla holds most dear are threatened. When the janitor reveals that an ancient curse, known as a geis, has awakened deadly powers that defy explanation, McKayla is forced to come to terms with what is real and what is fantasy.

    A wonderful debut!
Christy Dorrity's Awakening is at least the third book/series that I have read that involves the Tuatha de Danaan. However, this book is completely different from all of the others!
This book, the debut story from Christy Dorrity, is a great story. I don't usually feature a lot of YA on my blog, because I do review quite a few books that are targeted to 18+, however I must say, I cannot wait for book two: Displaced.
McKayla is an average 16 year old girl, with a baby brother Benji and an eleven year old sister, Zoey. However things are not as they appear. Once Aunt Avril appears on the scene, average is the last word you would use to describe 'Kayla (as Zoey calls her).
There is so much that I want to tell you, but as my favorite character in Doctor Who says, "Spoilers!"
Check out this amazing YA debut novel today!
For Celtic Mythology and Irish Dance Lovers!
    I loved this book!
This book was so different from anything I have ever read.
Apparently, after reading the author's bio, I learned that she grew up in the same town that she wrote her book about, and she is a champion Irish dancer, which is why her lingo for the dancing was accurate, which really placed you into the novel because the author really knew her stuff. No flaky descriptions. This was well written.
So on that note, if you don't care for Irish dancing, or Celtic mythology, then this book might not be for you. Like I said before, I have never read a book like this, but I loved it. It was amazing.
Our protagonist is a teenage girl, McKayla. She loves to dance, has a typical high school crush, sweet best friend, loving family, and crazy aunt. But McKayla is special. Strange things are going on, and through the help of McKayla's gifted aunt, she learns of her own special abilities. A creepy woman is sneaking around town and has a foul purpose that McKayla's aunt is trying to unearth.
There is just something so unique about this story. The author focuses a lot on dance and the emotions behind it.

"I really did love this tale. It reminded me of Lemoney Snicket and The Spiderwick Chronicles with the detail of a Neil Gaimen novel. It has all the aspects to become the next great classic." (Greta, Paranormal Wastelands Book Reviews)

    Don't Leave Me Hanging!
What did you love best about The League of Doorways?
The way that the author brought all the groups, each with their own agenda, to the same place, ready for a final confrontation.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The League of Doorways?
At the very end of Book 2 when it is revealed that Leana may have been the one that sold out her friends.
Have you listened to any of Fred Wolinskys other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, Mr. Wolinsky again gives us a fine performance making each character distinct and believable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Jack Black is finally united with his sister but can't seem to help her.
    Any additional comments?
Please hurry and finish Book 3! Jack needs to save his sister, and their uncle must pay for his crimes.
There is another cliffhanger at the end - again
    AudioBook Review:
    Stars: Overall: 4 Narration: 4 Story 4
The second in this trilogy picks right up where the first ended, or didnt since the author is an apparent fan of the cliffhanger. While I understand the reasons for them, in titles geared to younger readers I am NOT a fan (not much for myself either) as I believe that each story should have some conclusion that makes you curious about what next, not struggling to sort out a long or drawn-out plot point. But that is really my biggest issue with this story: again ORourke manages to build a world that is solid and inventive, and give us plenty of action to follow.
There are new characters: good, bad and ugly to get to know again in this story, while some carry-over from the first book does happen, this is really a solid deepening of the characters we met in book one: and you CANNOT jump into this story expecting to follow along. You will be hopelessly lost as the action starts with very little breathing time, and we jump right in to it all: not a ton of catch up or background from the first book.

VERY Harry Potter - but less
A young orphan boy living with cruel human foster parents (in a dog basket in a dim attic, NOT a cupboard under the stairs)reaches his 11th birthday and is invited to attend an unusual boarding school reached by an unusual train. Accompanied by the school caretaker... He and his friends go where they are not supposed to, find out about other worlds and magic races, and Harry (oops, he's not actually named Harry) finds a message from his deceased dad and fights off an evil one. This is like the Potter story to the point where that's all I could think about, but without the wonderful detail (and of course not new in this story as it was with the Rowling books). Harry for impatient readers maybe, shorter and lesser. Although this is very clearly the beginning of a series, I feel no need to read more.
It begins like this: âA badly painted garden gnome with a ...
This is a middle grade story with magic and mythic elements.
It begins like this: âA badly painted garden gnome with a look of surprise upon its face sat atop a bright red toadstool. In its hand it held a fishing rod, the hook of which hung unmoving in the windless Hertfordshire air several inches above a small pondâs still surface. The gnomeâs eyes seemed fixed on the other side of the garden where a greenhouse sat in the shade of a crab apple tree. Every other pane of glass had been painted lime green so as to create a checkerboard effect. Thomas stood on a large wooden box in the loft, his eye pressed against the hole in the roof as he stared down through a broken tile.â
The author, D. M. Andrews, is a skilled story teller. This novel is the first of a series of stories. It was hard for me to connect with the main character because of the detachment of the story teller. The mythic and magical elements of the story were confusing and took me out of the story. They were not woven into the storyâs whole properly.
The device of an orphan going off to school is common to middle grade literature, but it should be handled in an unusual way to draw us into the adventure. The other characters were not realistically drawn. The dialogue was not age appropriate. The magical elements were very imaginative. It is too bad that the sum of the parts did not make a suitable whole.
I give it three stars out of a possible five.
An Accessible, Engaging and Satisfying Read
Finely drawn characters, wonderful atmosphere and a compelling plot make this a very attractive choice for ambitious middle grade readers. But here's an attractive aspect of this book that has not been remarked upon by other reviewers - with a few deft strokes Mr.

    Publisher's Summary:
Billy wheeled himself down the corridor at school. The buzzing of the students filled the halls. It was the last week of school before summer break. The eighth graders were going to be graduating that night and in three months starting high school. William Matthew Warner was no different than any other kid at school who would be graduating that night and moving up to the next level in education. Everyone knew him as Billy, but he was not like other kids his age. When school is over, the kids will be outside running about under the warm sun. But Billy couldn't run because he was bound to a wheelchair. Since birth, Billy hadn't been able to walk due to a muscular disorder. The doctors and specialists told his parents that he would be bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Billy had always dreamed of walking and dancing like the other kids, but he knew he would never be able to do that ever. He always envied the other kids who could walk, run and play sports. The big eighth grade dance was in two days and he knew that he would never be able to ask anyone out because he couldn't dance with them. It was no fun to just go to a dance and sit and watch. Billy went over to his bottom locker and his friend Allison was there. Allison had been a friend of Billy's since they were in the first grade together. Allison also lived next to Billy and they had played together as well when they were younger. Now Allison was a cheerleader and was on the volleyball team as the captain. She was a popular girl at school and always had a lot of friends around her.

    Members Reviews:
    Phenomenal.
I absolutely loved Some Quiet Place, so I was beyond excited when I heard that there would be a companion book and I am even more happy to say that Where Silence Gathers is a wonderful companion to Some Quiet Place!
In Some Quiet Place, the main character can't feel emotions but in Where Silence Gathers, Alex not only feels emotions but she calls Revenge her best friend. I could go on with the comparisons to keep the element of familiarity alive but honestly, this companion title does such a magnificent job, I don't even need to.
Readers of Some Quiet Place know what world to expect in Where Silence Gathers but the stories within this world are so unique that it feels like you're diving into this world for the very first time. If you've ever wanted to read a book again but for the very first time, this reading experience is the closest I've gotten to that. It's so familiar yet so fresh. It's heartbreaking and hopeful. Once again, the main character is grieving but grief is so unique to each person and there are so many different circumstances that lead to grief and so many different actions one can make in the midst of grief.
Following Alex's story was fascinating and intense to say the least. The relationships that Alex has with her family and friends were quite a sight to see as well. After losing her immediate family, Alex has her Aunt Missy and Uncle Saul and while she loves them, her grief has kept her distant. Their loving hands never pull away and that was just so beautiful to see. I don't think we see enough of that in stories that are out today. Alex's friends don't take a backseat either. Georgie and Briana are going through their own struggles just as Alex is but having each other and knowing that they are all there for each other makes such a huge difference. And Angus. Alex's neighbor. Wow. What a wonderful reminder that help often comes from the most unexpected places.
As for the Emotions... I love how Alex sees the Elements not just as Emotions but as Choices. That is so powerful and really changes the game for the companion novel. I love the direction Sutton went with this novel and I love that with this added element to the story, there's even more depth to every single word when there already was so much. This is not easy to do. Not at all.

Master Gerrold does it once again
Gerrold sequels don't disappoint. This is an incredible continuation of Jumping Off the Planet. I wondered how Gerrold was going to make the moon as interesting as the beanstalk, lushly described in the previous book. I thought, "Well, the moon's just a sandy rock."
But Gerrold made the moon of the future into an exciting and fascinating place, a wild west of survival technologies that has flourished into a planet-wide colony of three million people, each with their own agendas and means of coping with life in a vacuum.
Now that's sci-fi. This will knock your socks off.
    A Worthy Sequel!
If you're thinking of reading David Gerrold's latest young-adult novel, "Jumping Off The Moon" without reading the first one, "Bouncing Off The Planet", be prepared to be completely lost. This worthy sequel to "...Planet" begins only a week after the action of the first. The characters already established, as is the plot, "...Moon" is a continuation of the wonderful story.
"Chigger" and his two brothers are still fleeing from many people, including their parents, while unknowingly toting a stuffed robotic animal endowed with super-intelligence. While this super-intelligence is only in its test phases, a few units have "escaped" and are loose in the solar system. "Chigger" finds out that his little brothers stuffed monkey is actually a sentient being on the lam from many nations who would control it. Most of the action takes place on the cold, sterile and anonymous surface and sub-surface of Earth's Moon, which has been colonized by the "Loonies", a nickname for lunar inhabitants.
