All Piddy knows is that Yaqui hates her - and she better watch her back because Yaqui isnt kidding around. At first Piddy just focuses on trying to find out more about the father shes never met and how to balance honors courses with her weekend job at the neighborhood hair salon. But as the harassment escalates, avoiding Yaqui and her gang starts to take over Piddys life. Is there any way for Piddy to survive without closing herself off and running away from her problems?

    Good read for teens
I liked it but at times it turned a little preachy. I really enjoyed the part where Piedad starts transforming into her mother's worst nightmare but I thought if she got out of it too soon, perhaps a little bit more of the darkness could've been explored. Still it might be helpful for kids in that same situation. I missed knowing a little bit more about Jackie too, And wonder what life was going to be for her in the world. Still it was entertaining and a different take on the experience of being Latino in the United States.
    Great easy read
While this book is meant for young readers, I was assigned it is an easy read for one of my University classes. I truly enjoyed this story and recommended for both adults and young adults! the story reflects a situation that is be true for many young adults.
    Realistic, Good, but very Frustrating
I liked this book mostly because of the protagonist, Piddy. I found her to be very relatable. Growing up being a victim of bullying myself, her experience almost echoed mines, only the physical abuse was nowhere near as bad as hers. With that being said, she was really the only character I liked. I found her mother insufferable and I honestly didn't blame Piddy for not confiding in her. The character of Lila, I guess, was suppose to be something of a cool aunt type but I didn't care for her either. And Piddy's love interest came off more creepy and slightly grotesque than anything. But maybe I could blame the narrator's voice she used for that.
I get the point of what the author was trying to do with this story. It's a coming of age story hidden as a narrative about bullying and it's works because sometimes finding out who you are comes from being put in situations that make you question how you want the world to see you. If I have one complaint is that just because your story is written in the first person doesn't mean that your protagonist should be the only likable and relatable character. I've read plenty of first person POV books where I loved and related to other characters besides the main character. Everyone besides Piddy felt more like fillers for something.
This is a great book that I feel teenaged girls should read, especially young women of color because the narrative about cultural identity rings true for me too.

    Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Two girls + three guys + one house parents = ten things April and her friends did that they (definitely, maybe, probably) shouldn't have.
If given the opportunity, what 16-year-old wouldn't jump at the chance to move in with a friend and live parent-free? Although maybe "opportunity" isn't the right word, since April had to tell her dad a tiny little untruth to make it happen (see #1: "Lied to Our Parents"). But she and her housemate Vi are totally responsible and able to take care of themselves. How they ended up "Skipping School" (#3), "Throwing a Crazy Party" (#8), "Buying a Hot Tub" (#4), and, um, "Harboring a Fugitive" (#7) at all is kind of a mystery to them.
In this hilarious and bittersweet tale, Sarah Mlynowski mines the heart and mind of a girl on her own for the first time. To get through the year, April will have to juggle a love triangle, learn to do her own laundry, and accept that her carefully constructed world just might be falling apart...one thing-she-shouldn't-have-done at a time.

    High School Fairy Tale
I actually liked the end of the book but that was about the only time I did.
April, Vi and friends aren't exactly bad characters but it was all just a little too out there. She doesn't want to move to Cleveland because of a boy so she winds up moving in with a friend who has no parental units whatsoever and getting a grand a month from her father at which point she had said friend start partying, drinking and having sex. I guess it's a teenagers dream come true but honestly I got bored with it pretty quickly. Also I think April is the only one in the book, including the reader, who can't see something's up with Noah right away.
I did like the kitten. There's also a misunderstood blackmailer, a misunderstood hit and run and a misunderstood hot guy. It's a party book basically kind of unbelievable at that. Too bad because both April and Vi have some real issues that are kind of addressed at the end I just wish the author would have found a way to maybe loose some of the silliness and have a little more depth. Honestly, my biggest problem with April isn't that I didn't like her it's that about midway through the book I no longer cared about her.
    Just Ok
A little juvenile for adult readers, but I sure wouldn't let my kids read it....as these characters are naughty. It's not overly sexual, full of too many swear words or anything like that, but the amount of deceit and lying that happens is not something I'd want my kids to get ideas from!! I read it at the suggestion of a friend, and would recommend it for a quick, light-hearted read. But, it won't be on my Top 10 of the year.
The Autumn Review for Ten Things
April's father decides to take a job out of state. Naturally, she doesn't want leave her friends and boyfriend behind. So what's a girl to do? Well, she convinces her dad into letting her live with a friend. That's where the lies start. Her friends' mother is out on the road traveling, but April's dad doesn't know that. Then April and her friends buy hot tubs, have parties,...basically get into typical teenage trouble. Through all these mistakes and lies, sixteen year old April starts to understand who she is and what she needs.

    Perfect for Youth
I read this book when I was around 13. I enjoyed it very much. It's about a boy growing into a man. It teaches you so many different things. About judgement. Tolerance. I bought it on my kindle to share with my kids. They also enjoyed the book. I'd recommend this book to young adults as well as adults everywhere. Most suited to young adults as it is a coming of age book.

    Beautiful
I loved this book it was the beautiful story that is true for many I would recommend this to everyone I know and this book deserves a five star rating because it is amazing and I feel like Chris makes the character become real
    I hated the ending!
I listened with great enjoyment and interest to this tape. While listening I looked up the author's other books, I thought about recommending it to some kids I know and compared it to "The Perks of Being a Wall Flower",until the end. I'm not enough of a literary critic to know if the ending was powerful or not, but the first thing that came to mind was the movie ending of one of my favorite plays "The Bad Seed". If you read the book or see the play you get one ending, if you watch the movie you get another. I feel like we got the movie ending here and it almost ruined the book for me.
so funny and just a great story and i love it over
it was the the most amazing book. funny jokes and i dose not heart that i love the writer.
    I loved it
I loved this book.i think it was well written, this is my first time reading one of his books and I was surprised I'm a huge fan of him on glee too... well done Kurt well done

    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz and William C. Morris Awards, this poignant and hilarious story of loss and redemption explores the process of grief, second chances, and even the meaning of life (Kirkus Reviews).
In the remarkable, bizarre, and heart-wrenching summer before Cullen Witters senior year of high school, he is forced to examine everything he thinks he understands about his small and painfully dull Arkansas town. His cousin overdoses; his town becomes absurdly obsessed with the alleged reappearance of an extinct woodpecker; and most troubling of all, his sensitive, gifted fifteen-year-old brother, Gabriel, suddenly and inexplicably disappears. Meanwhile, the crisis of faith spawned by a young missionarys disillusion in Africa prompts a frantic search for meaning that has far-reaching consequences. As distant as the two stories initially seem, they are woven together through masterful plotting and merge in a surprising and harrowing climax. This extraordinary tale from a rare literary voice finds wonder in the ordinary and illuminates the hope of second chances.
    Members Reviews:
    Weird and Wonderful
This is an amazing tale of brothers Cullen and Gabriel. While the town goes cukoo in search of a rare and possibly non-existent woodpecker, Gabriel goes missing. Cullen is left to spend his senior year worrying and accepting pity glances and casseroles from the townsfolk. The tone is straight forward, a little deadpan and sombre, yet humorous. The entire idea is clever and I loved it. If you choose to read it, I have to share that I believe the last sentence is one of the best in YA novels of all time. Just when you're confused and don't think Whaley can pull it off, he wraps it all up with a shocking and satisfying conclusion.
When a curse save your life!
You can Google me for the rest of the review! I have a whole review of this book in my Blogger and Wordpress blog:
    "Inkish Kingdoms"
I cannot say that I laughed with this book. I think the main event on the book is what actually sets the mood and the tone of the book (I mean that is what is supposed to happen, isnt it?). It is just way too serious the fact that Cullens little brother just disappeared.
I can picture Cullen and his best friend just trying to live a normal life and move on, but how? The whole situation just becomes absurd at some point, not the book, but real life. How can you actually move on with your life like nothing happened? It is impossible not to give up to the pressure and to ones emotions.
The narrator was simple amazing! You can totally feel what Cullen was feeling! His fears and frustration! Even his cynicism was palpable! There is a reason why I gave 5 stars on every rate for this book!
    Wonderfully Interwoven Story/Narration
What made the experience of listening to Where Things Come Back the most enjoyable?
This was a fascinating story to listen to, because there are two stories being told, which become blended together toward the end.
Have you listened to any of Josh Hurley and Fred Berman s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first listen for both narrators, and they both did a great job.
    Worst book ever!
This book epitomizes a phrase I have hated my entire life. I am ashamed to say that I cannot come up with a better way to describe this book. If you could turn the phrase "life's a bitch and then you die" into a novel, this would be the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hopeless. Freak. Elephant. Pitiful. These are the words of Skinny, the vicious voice that lives inside 15-year-old Ever Davies's head. Skinny tells Ever all the dark thoughts her classmates have about her. Ever knows she weighs over 300 pounds, knows she'll probably never be loved, and Skinny makes sure she never forgets it.
But there is another voice: Ever's singing voice, which is beautiful but has been silenced by Skinny. Partly in the hopes of trying out for the school musical - and partly to try and save her own life - Ever decides to undergo a risky surgery that may help her lose weight and start over.
With the support of her best friend, Ever begins the uphill battle toward change. But demons, she finds, are not so easy to shake, not even as she sheds pounds. Because Skinny is still around. And Ever will have to confront that voice before she can truly find her own.
    Members Reviews:
    I hear those same voices
Speaking as one who has struggled with being overweight my whole life, I can say I learned a lot from "Skinny". I totally understand those emotions, and the self-abuse whenever I would fail at a diet or eat stuff I should not eat. My heart goes out to all who have this same struggle because it eats at your very being and can destroy your self-esteem. Not to mention how hard it is on your health to be overweight. I lost my only sister, all 350 pounds of her, to obesity-related illness at the young age of 47. I miss her every day.
This is a great book and I am very glad I read it. Everyone who has struggled or does now struggle with weight should read it. Although the method this young girl finally chose to help her become more healthy is not the route I would take, I certainly understand her reasons for doing so, and admire her courage.
The revelations about "Skinny" that we learned at the end of the book were worth the entire read! Fabulous!
    Authentic and fearless
What made the experience of listening to Skinny the most enjoyable?
The character of Ever is real, imperfect, vulnerable and lovable.
What did you like best about this story?
Even though the target audience is teen girls, the angst and inner-voice of Skinny, telling Ever she will never be enough, is a universal experience.
What about Elizabeth Mortons performance did you like?
Ms. Morton brought warmth and charm to the voice of Ever, and gave all the characters a uniqueness that I could recognize each character every time. With excellent, but seemingly effortless enunciation, I never missed a word.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes!
    Any additional comments?
I would have liked the author to explore how Ever dealt with giving up food as an emotional crutch and truly learn to cope with her grief and move beyond it. Also, I wanted to scream at this Dad for not getting his daughter some psychological therapy: death of a mother and weight gain of 200 pounds in five years is definitely reason to get some help. I would also think any teen girl getting this kind of surgery would need more guidance and support than represented.

Sarah Parsons has never seen Amber House, the grand Maryland estate that's been in her family for three centuries. She's never walked its hedge maze nor found its secret chambers; she's never glimpsed the shades that haunt it, nor hunted for the lost diamonds in its walls.
But after her grandmother passes away, Sarah and her friend Jackson decide to search for the diamonds - and the House comes alive. She discovers that she can see visions of the House's past, like the 18th-century sea captain who hid the jewels, or the glamorous great-grandmother driven mad by grief. Sarah grows closer to both Jackson and a young man named Richard Hathaway, whose family histories are each deeply entwined with her own. But when her ghostly visions start to threaten the person she holds most dear, Sarah must do everything she can to get to the bottom of the House's secrets, and stop the course of history before it is cemented forever.

    YOU WON'T REGRET THIS ONE!!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Addicting, mesmerizing. Beautifully and skillfully written. Stands out in the YA genre. Each passage is lyrical imagery. No one could have narrated better than Tucker Reed. I was so engrossed in this book. Can't wait for the sequel in January 2014.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Only one? I loved them all! They were all believable. I felt like I knew them--their motives, beliefs, actions all made sense yet there were several surprises as well.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Don't want to give anything away...but loved the scenes with Sarah and Sam, anything with the house and the past...okay no spoilers.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    YES YES YES YES!
    Any additional comments?
PLEASE AUDIBLE GET TUCKER REED TO NARRATE THE SEQUEL AS SOON AS IT COMES OUT IN JANUARY 2014!!!!!!
    Captivating!
Where does Amber House rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's definitely up there on the enjoyment scale.. A nice surprise.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Amber House?
I was particularly taken with how the authors portrayed Sarah and Sam's relationship. Loved the eeriness and suspense.
What does Tucker Reed bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She just embodies the voice of Sarah so incredibly. I hesitated to listen as I have found in the past that authors do not often make good narrators. Tucker Reed is a glowing exception.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A few little tears. Laughed out loud a few times as well. Just got completely caught up in the story and the narration and literally could NOT stop listening once I started.
    Any additional comments?
It's well worth the credit. I'll be on pins and needles waiting for book 2.
    Spooky great book!
What did you love best about Amber House?
I would have given it 5 stars if the ending were not incomplete. I loved this story I even got scared at parts which takes me a lot to get spooked but it really wraps you in.

Why Should the Kids Have All the Fun?
What made the experience of listening to Gods and Warriors the most enjoyable?
Written with adolescents in mind, I came to this recording for the always rewarding voice of Toby Stephens. But I was soon drawn into the magical ancient world of the Greek Isles and the surrounding tribal nations. How refreshing to find, along with the strong young runaway boy, a brave, resourceful girl fully realized and not just an afterthought. Stephens did a masterful job of getting the many voices just right. This can be a fatal flaw if the narrator's rendition of that soft, higher register girl squeaks rather than speaks. Oh and the distinctive personalities of thinking animals. I loved being part of a dolphin pod for a while. The other pleasure was in the delivery of the action itself. Not once did I detect a condescending note. But no amount of vocal mastery could overcome what could have been a ho-hum adventure tale. Paver's writing was graphic, exciting, suspenseful and satisfying. I look forward with pleasure to more in this series.
Well-paced story for kids; fantastic reader
I'm a big Toby Stephens fan, so picked this because he is the reader. But I found I liked the story, too, which is set in a fantastical ancient world which may or may not be prehistoric Britain.
Michelle Paver is a popular British children's writer and this marks the start of a new series for her.
The plot zips along apace, with many cliff-hangers, figurative and literal. Altogether an entertaining read. I'll be looking for the sequels.
    Not something I'd ordinarily read...
Okay, I'll admit it: I only got this because Toby narrated it. But I ended up really liking the story! It's not what I expected. I expected something history-based, but Gods and Warriors is actually a really fun adventure with a bit of the supernatural thrown in. I was really invested in the characters and there are some great twists.
I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series. (I just picked up book 2 from the library!) Hopefully someday Toby will narrate them too.
Pretty promising start to a new series!
This is a great return to what I think is Michelle Pavers best style. If you liked her Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, I think it would be difficult not to enjoy this as the formula is just so similar. Equally, if you liked this and haven't listened to that series, I cannot recommend it enough.
I'm not sure this book is of quite the same quality as the Torak books, both in story and narration.
