Publisher's Summary:
Our Island Story , by H.E. Marshall, is an Edwardian history book for younger listeners (aged six to 12) that tells the story of England, concluding with the reign of Queen Victoria. Antonia Fraser and many other current historians declare that it was this book that opened the delights of history for them. It fell from fashion in the 1960s, but its recent re-release in hardback has seen it become a publishing surprise in the UK, with sales of some 75,000 copies in a few months.
Now, Naxos AudioBooks releases it unabridged in three volumes, divided into three clear periods of history. Though slightly edited to take account of historical changes and attitudes, it is presented unabridged.
Editorial Reviews:
Not only will young listeners hear the fascinating story of Britain, they will also experience Marshall's Edwardian-style, since this history was written in 1905. Myth and reality are combined, substantially adding to the history commonly found in school books. Narrators Anna Bentinck and Daniel Philpott are spot-on as they continually switch accents and move from text to quotation in this fast-paced history. Bentinck presents the comprehensive introduction, and then she and Philpott take up the story, never failing to keep listeners' attention. Listening to this unique presentation is a rewarding experience.

We have been reading through this history book for several years and love it, but our version was a pretty poor paperback reprint. I love this version of it! The color pictures make an immeasurable difference and the text is wonderfully clear (as in we experienced several pages in our old version where the text was so blurred we couldn't read it). So glad this is available in this format now!
A Well Written Story About Britain
This book is an excellent historical work about Britain and it is written for young children. It starts in the fog of ancient myths and ends with the Boer War. If a person wishes to get a very simple, very readable, and very enjoyable book about British history, than this is the scroll to buy.
Simplistic
Simplistic, but a fair overview of English/British history for someone in a hurry; I used it to check basic background while reading a novel about King Edward II, and it was effective for that. The book was obviously written for children.
Treasure
This book is a treasure. I am learning right along with my girls. All the stories highlight strong moral character traits. Like honesty, courage, kindness, and love. Wonderful!!!
Print too small for younger readers!
While the story itself is good, I bought it to read with my son. The print is entirely too small. It is poorly printed. It should have been done in larger print. I realize that would make it a thicker book, but the way it is done is not at all useful for younger readers, and if you are following the book list, this is recommended for younger readers. I was really frustrated because although I had it in electronic format, I try to limit my child's reading to books. I didn't send it back, but I wish I had.
