    Title: Bone Girl
    Author: Annette Drake
    Narrator: Darryl Hughes Kurylo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 1 min

    Publisher's Summary:
Eleven-year-old Josey Miller knows two things: it's her fault Mama left, and she will do anything to coax her back.
When Mrs. Casey, the new music teacher, starts a band at Bennett Springs Middle School, Josey sees it as her chance to finally belong to something and convince Mama to visit for her concerts. The only problem: there's no money for a clarinet, what with Dad laid off and fighting to keep their farm.
But things start looking up when Grandpa Joe gives Josey an old trombone to play, and Mr. McInerny starts boarding his high-dollar Arabian stallion with Dad. Nobody can train horses like Josey's father. And that's good because Chief is dangerous.
When her father and the stallion go missing during a 50-mile endurance ride in the Ozark Mountains, can Josey bring them safely home?
    Members Reviews:
Josie's father is left trying to keep them together on the family place using his best skill training horses
The title is intriguing and turns out to not refer to the expected bones.
Josie's mother is an addict and in prison. Josie's father is left trying to keep them together on the family place using his best skill training horses.
Chief is a difficult stallion to train but the fees keep the mortgage paid. Loss of the horse means loss of the place.
Josie joins the new school band playing an old trombone that once belonged to an uncle sent to Vietnam. She loves to practice playing for her horse Ruby although all the horses love to hear the music.
The stage is set. Trouble is around the corner.
The book is engaging. I found setting it down difficult.
An outstanding read for Middle School+ readers
I fell in love with this story right from the very beginning. Josey is a gritty, gutsy, and vulnerable kid whoâs trying to make the best of a bad situation. Her motherâs in jail. Her fatherâs working to prevent the loss of the family farm, and Josie, more than anything, wants to join the newly-formed school band with her best friend. A new instrument is out of the question, but Josieâs grandfather comes up with a trombone.
Bone Girl is all about a year in the life of Josie. What made this story so heart-warming and moving was the link between Josie and her father, now a single parent, the struggles she faced in school when a bully goes after her, her love of horses and music, and her tenacious spirit.
Bone Girl is well written and uses fascinating detail to introduce us to the back story of living on a small horse farm and the sport of endurance racing. Annette Drake doesnât flinch from confronting issues that affect young kids today â the loss of a parent, poverty, bullying, and the journey towards self-respect.
This book would make a great addition to any school library for middle-school readers because it tells a story about tenacity and courage, and ends by showing even an eleven-year-old can make a difference.
    Delightful!!!
I enjoyed Bone Girl very much it brought to mind many of my own experiences growing up in a rural area, and grade school band and learning to play an instrument. The characters are people you can relate to and the tale of growing up, experiencing bullying. Josey is an example of a young girl growing up believing the false guilt that can come from a parent who leaves for whatever reason. A sweet story and a refreshing change from the usual. Annette, well done!
    fun read
I really enjoyed Bone Girl. Loved the build up of the characters and the "simpler life" setting.

Would you listen to The Angel and the Ring again? Why?
My mom read this to us outloud at the original release. Now my son is enjoying it on his iPod. Good for ages 10 and up I think.
    Great for all ages
    Any additional comments?
We listened to this book on a long drive with age range of 9 - 75 year olds and it was a first time for the 4 of them to listen to an audio book. They all enjoyed it was not allowed to turn it off and met with groans on any stops. But the adventure and the mystery kept them all guessing. I personally liked the angel blogs, and the they made the 9 year old laugh. I would definitely recommend this book. The reader was an easy listen and he made it easy to decipher who was doing the talking.

The fictional life of a wild mink aimed at a young adult audience
I love this mink. It tells the life of a young mink, Vison in the wild, his development into an adult and his eventual end as an old, rugged mink. The author is a naturalist and the story is about 50 years old and aimed at the young adult audience. It also tells the life of men living along the Potomic River and their interactions with this mink and his uncanny ability to avoid traps. Vison is a clever mink and reluctantly respected by the river men. Times have changed in the last 50 years and attitudes about hunting and trapping have changed with them.
    A Classic Wild Animal Book
Vison the mink is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to learn about wild mink. It is factual and reveals much knowledge on the part of the author about mink living in the wild. It really is not a feel-good book and is a bit brutal in describing the life and death struggles of Vison during his life on Muddy Branch. I found the book in the local library when I was young and purchased it later in life. It has a prized place in my library. The story is timeless and I have read it many times over the years.
    A great book
This book was an awesome adventure in nature. The author takes us through a journey with a mink which is educational and very interesting .Iam ready to read more books by this author.
    An old-fashioned wild animal story
In 1949, twenty years before she would go on to win the prestigious Newbery Medal for children's literature, Jean Craighead George wrote a series of animal stories with her husband, John George. The first was an intriguing novel called VULPES THE RED FOX, which was recently reprinted in a paperback edition. DIPPER OF COPPER CREEK was also reprinted a few years ago, but MASKED PROWLER: THE STORY OF A RACCOON, BUBO THE GREAT HORNED OWL, MEPH THE PET SKUNK, and VISON THE MINK remain out-of-print. Each story follows basically the same plot; a wild animal lives in Maryland alongside a river, struggles to outwit predators, both wild and human, raises young, hunts, and ultimately dies. These stories remain interesting because they are written so meticulously and poetically. Each sentence is rich with a feeling of natural beauty. You're always guaranteed to learn something new about the animals and their habitat featured in the books. However, the parts focusing on humans often become rather tedious. Every year in each book the same hunters, all with characteristic names like Buck Queen, Will Stacks, and Al Starcher, go out looking for a wild animal to trap or shoot. In VISON a new character makes an entrance in the mink's life--Sam, the Old Negro of Red Sand Hill.

    Perfect!
Can't wait for my grandson to read this. He's just starting to ask questions about Bigfoot. Perfect!
Fun adventure told by a Bigfoot kid
This book is about a kid who's actually a Bigfoot, and lives in an amazing 'Bigfoot' world. His home in the woods is set near a town. The townspeople don't know about their Bigfoot neighbors, because the Bigfoots have a special shield technology to hide their community.
The problems start when Arrth (that's the Bigfoot kid) is playing around one afternoon and destroys the barrier by mistake. He has to find a way to fix it, fast. If he doesn't, the townspeople will find out about them. They'll probably try to kill Arrth and his family and friends.
I liked all of the technology that the Bigfoots have. It was fun thinking of them as having devices. I always pictured them more like bears or hairy monsters, so this changed my opinion. I also liked the place he lives in. There are cool caves and stuff. I also like when Arrth goes to the town. It's really funny how he reacts to people, cars, and all sorts of things. Plus, it's an exciting adventure story.
    FUN, EXCITING STORY
SPIKE BROWN HAS DONE IT AGAIN. "SAVING BIGFOOT VALLEY" IS A GREAT YOUNG ADULT BOOK. WHILE WRITTEN FOR YOUNG READERS, IT HAS COMPLICATED TWISTS AND TURNS AND PLENTY OF SURPRISES EVEN FOR ADULTS.

Whale Island and the Mysterious Bones, for children age eight to 12, encompasses two themes: The profound significance of communicating and co-existing with animals, and ocean inhabitants; and understanding true courage after children confront their fears. The story begins with Katey and Will Longley, a brother and sister who journey to a remote island thousands of miles across the globe. After a storm capsizes their uncle's boat near Cape Cod, the children have the misfortune to meet Captain Sharkley, a shady individual who uses them in his quest to find mystical whalebones on an island from which no one has returned alive.

Was Swept Away By This Page-Turning Adventure
I really enjoyed this story! The story revolves around two siblings, Will and Katie, who are shipwrecked after being separated from their Uncle Hughie. They get tricked by Captain Sharkley who pretends he is going to help the siblings get home but instead kidnaps them on his ship. Katie, Will and two other allies they meet, all need to escape from Captain Sharkley's ship in order reach Whale Island. You really feel like you are on the adventure with the characters as they are faced with one obstacle after another and Bonnet's imagination shines when the characters eventually reach Whale Island. She writes beautiful descriptive passages, painting beautiful imagery interwoven nicely with the dialogue as the characters encounter some dangerous creatures on the island. Will has to stay strong for his younger sister, but Katie has a lot of courage within her tiny frame, as well as the power of kindness that helps ally themselves with George who helps the outsmart Captain Sharkley. I also loved the magical element of the story where the siblings are able to communicate with whales and other animals through the whale bones. It made me wish I could speak to animals as well and what an amazing gift Katie and Will were given in order to help save this hidden world from the likes of Captain Sharkley, who wants these bones for his own personal gain. I think middle-grade readers and older will enjoy this story, and I am sure they will be swept away by this fun page-turning adventure.

    Freedom Lake Resort.
    Gated. Fenced. Remote.
    Miles from home.
    Miles from friends.
The moment 12-year-old Kelsey and her mother arrive at Freedom Lake, it's obvious that this is not going to be the kind of resort experience Kelsey expected. Or hoped for. A nurse escorts a girl in a strait-jacket out the back door of their cabin and Kelsey's creeped out. The girl begs Kelsey for help. Mrs. A., the woman who runs the resort, apologizes and explains that the girl hasn't been taking her meds. That's when Kelsey learns there's a private school on the property for girls with special needs. It's off-limits to resort guests, not that Kelsey would have a reason to go there.
At first Kelsey believes Mrs. A. because she has other things to worry about. Like how she will fit in with the rest of the resort kids. One boy in particular. Things change when one of the special girls slips Kelsey a secret message. It's a riddle. As Kelsey begins to unravel its meaning, she realizes something chilling is going on at Freedom Lake Girls Academy. The more Kelsey learns, the greater her danger. If she's not careful, she might become a special girl, too.

    A tweenage mystery ...
Twelve year old Kelsey is on a 2 week vacation with her mother at a Lake Resort. Her best friend was supposed to come along but couldn't. Kelsey now wonders what she is going to do, will she make friends and will she have fun while at the resort. Kelsey's mom signs her up for a quilt class and while there she receives a message full of clues from someone over at the school for 'girls with special needs'. This leads Kelsey into a search for answers.

This is a story from the Famous People in History II collection.
Here are the life stories of nine famous people who have left their mark upon the world. There are men of action such as Alexander the Great and George Washington, and a woman, Joan of Arc, who inspired a nation. There are scientists whose voyages of discovery took place in laboratories: Isaac Newton, Louis Pasteur, and Marie Curie. Imagination is the fuel of the artist. The paintings of Leonardo da Vinci and the symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven, though centuries old, still affect us today. And finally, there is the story of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who gained freedom for his country while at the same time promoting the idea of peace and non-violence. These men and women were important in their time and, even in our computer age, show what individuals with ideals and energy can achieve.
    Editorial Reviews:
Laura Brattan's exuberant delivery and inviting, conversational tone propels this installment of Nicolas Soames educational Famous People in History series, aimed at middle-school children, which offers a concise introduction to the life of Roman Catholic martyr Joan of Arc, one of the most famous women in history who fearlessly led the French army to victories against the English in the Hundred Years War in the early 15th century.
Youngsters will surely find this brief, eminently accessible audiobook, along with Brattan's animated performance, both informative and entertaining.

    Kids need heroes...
I entertain my minivan-bound children with books on tape/CD. The best are the Harry Potter series. There are many other good ones. And this is a good non-fiction title for children.
Kids need heroes, and this tape provides my 5 and 7 year old boys with some impressive ones. The heroes come from the worlds of politics, science, literature, religion... This tape is one of my 7 year old son's favorites. It has a very positive message for him. He gets ideas of what he could be.
Volume 2 (the one I have) tells the stories of some historical figures, emphasizing all the positive and heroic qualities of each: Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Washington.
As an adult accustomed to having his heroes routinely discredited, I find these idealized portraits naive, but kind of refreshing. If you have kids you know that they have a purpose: to introduce you to the world again, and show you its wonder. These portraits of heroes are simplified and abstracted in a way that highlights their abilities. No jaded cynicism here. These scientists, thinkers, statesmen, musicians, were all leaders. My young leader could do worse than to select a role model from one of these larger than life heroes.
    Two other notes.
    1. The tapes are abridged, while the CDs are not. Buy the CD.
    2. Amazon has one description for both volume 1 and 2. Misleading. They contain different people.
Vol 1 - Queen Elizabeth I, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson, William Shakespeare, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Vol 2 - Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, George Washington (This is the one I am reviewing)
Great cds for kids and adults!
Got 3 of the series for when my 7 and 10 year old grandkids would be spending a week with me.
