In Denver, Vicki Holden, Arapaho lawyer, gets a call from a law firm executive asking to meet her on a matter of life and death. Soon after, he's murdered.

At the Saint Francis Mission on the Arapaho reservation, Father John O'Malley hears a confession that alerts him to a murder and the likelihood of more murders.

So these two incorrigible sleuths each launch an investigation. In both cases the police don't believe their theories. Vicki and Father John are used to working together, but now they're separated by hundreds of miles. It's fun to watch their parallel investigations converge. Their loneliness and longing for each other's support is poignant.

The story takes us to a sacred place, where we watch an Arapaho man engaged on a vision quest. Various spirits, including the spirit of thunder, dwell there. Violent occurrences in the plot are often accompanied by rain and thunder, expressing the anger of the spirits.

There's an interesting subplot involving scandalous behavior on the part of the assistant priest at the Mission.

I'm finding this series quite addictive and enjoying the exposure to Arapaho culture.

Great Read for a Cold Evening by the Fire.

Margaret Coel's work is always entertaining and her development of her characters set against the grand landscapes of the American West is exceptional. I always look forward to a winter evening by my fireplace in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. Having spent my college years in Laramie, my mind becomes a canvas for her art.

I live in the southwest so I am always interested in novels that portray the condition of the American Indian. I am also Catholic, so the main character, Fr. O'Malley caught my interest from the first review I read of Margaret Coel's books. The story line in most of her novels puts Fr. O'Malley in the middle of a crisis happening to either an Indian or Indian land and sacred sites. There is always suspense, danger & empathy. I always finish by knowing a little more about American Indian culture and human nature.

A tale of battered women going back two centuries

Central to the story is Sacajawea, a famous Indian squaw who accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition to translate and negotiate with the Shoshones. She was often beaten and humiliated by her French trader husband, yet she played an important role in the expedition. Written accounts and oral histories differ on when, where and how Sacajawea died â and this true-to-life historical controversy adds the spice of authenticity to Coel's novel.

Like Sacajawea, but in present time, several women characters in the story have violent men in their lives, including Vicki Holden, the beautiful Arapaho lawyer who often partners with Father John OâMalley on homicide cases. And there's more than one murder for Father John and Vicki to investigate in this book â with precious little time to do it. Because Father John is about to be transferred to Marquette University to teach history.

Father John's misery over leaving the St. Francis Mission on the reservation makes it tough for him to stay sober â and adds one more conflict to a story rich in conflicts. As always, the repressed love between the priest and the lawyer increases the tension.

The Spirit Woman is yet another excellent addition to the Wind River Reservation series.

Sacajawea' Memories

Margaret Coel's books on the Wind River Reservation are the best books I have read on this subject. The series is center

around Father John, a priest on the reservation and Vicky Holden an Arapahoe woman lawyer .

Father John has been order to leave the reservation and Vickey is trying to reconcile with her ex-husband. Father John finds a grave near the river and Vicky's friend is missing. The story touches on spousal abuse and the reactions of individuals involved.

Vicky's friend is searching Sacajawea's memories that a reported to be found on the Shoshone part of the reservation. The ending has a surprise and I missed it.

Indians

This is another really good book by Margaret Coel. I enjoyed reading it as I always enjoy her books. Indian life on the present day reservation is most interesting and a part of our world that I did not know very much about. I like her characters and I especially like the setting. She is a terrific writer.

Unique style, loved the way she slowly developed the story through interviews annd different point of views.

I wished it would have been in Bavarian, my native language but that would diminish the number of readers.

The author did though color the language a bit towards Bavarian, made me feel like home....

Great Addition to Series

I've read almost all of the Mitchell/Markaby series

and am thrilled that Audible has added so many of the titles recently.

The village of Lower Stovey virtually becomes a character itself in this novel. Old Billy,Dillys(sp)and others

are unforgettable just as is the Vicar's daughter who never fit into village life. The relationship of Mitchell and Markaby, whose love story is a strange one, takes

several twists in this tale. Markaby is at his best solving both an ancient murder and new ones

as well. He never gives up on a case.

If you love English mysteries that keep you guessing,this one is it. Narrator Judith Bond is a

national treasure in her ability to interpret characters in every one of these books. I also

recommend Say It With Poison as the first book and

a really superb story as well.

Old school but fun

This was my first listen to books in this series, and it has turned out to be my favorite. The story is downright fascinating when compared with the others, although it's pretty tame and gives a grotesquely quaint view (at times) of a very sickening crime that occurred far too often. I don't think I even want to feel burlap again, never mind smell it. I've been listening to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy, and for those of you who've read them and this book, you'll appreciate my desire to see Lisbeth Salander come to Stovey Woods (excuse all typos -- typing from memory only).

Engrossing crime story

One is carried along by the narrative eager to find out what happens next. The characters are well-drawn so one doesn't get confused who is whom. Carol Boyd is an excellent reader.

A MEDICAL Thriller

Tightly written, but somewhat predictable medical thriller. Abbey, a young surgical intern with a brilliant career ahead of her stumbles onto a sinister crime syndicate. This a story told well, but a story that is a little overdone in the anals of medical thrillers. The medical jargon was trying at times. A bit too much med-speak for the uninitiated. This is probably my first and last medical thriller for 2017.

AnImperfect Marriage Between The Supernatural and Suspense

This book seeks to merge suspense with the supernatural and is only partially successful. As Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles investigate a series of grisly slayings with satanic overtones,they reluctantly join forces with the Mephisto Club.The club is a secret society of intellectuals focused on extinguishing an ancient evil that lurks among the unsuspecting. This group belives that the Biblical and pre-biblical stories of the Watchers, angels that mated with humanwomen,is true. The descendents of these unholy alliances roam the earth,wreaking havoc and feeding off the chaos and violence. Apparently,the goal of these evil predators is to rule the world.

The plot veers wildly from location to location. As the club members track down a link in Europe, Rizzoli and Isles travel to New York State and then to a New England lodge where the evil ones are unveiled.

This novel is interesting but uneven. The middle does drag and the two stories don't blend well. In order for the suspense aspects to succeed, there has to be committment to the concept that evil not only exists but is personified. The club's member's credentials lend credence to the story but Rizzoli is too mundane to seriously consider it and Isles is too afraid. Rizzoli's family problems, ie, her adulterous dad and her angry mom, seem silly and trivial. Isles affair with the priest is annoying.

This was an intersting concept. There is bad, ie drug dealing, spouse abuse, theft, and there is evil,the Holocaust,911 massacre.

Overall I loved this story.

A good beginning to a cozy series

This is a cozy with a clever twist. The lead character is a 92 year old female sheriff's deputy and columnist for the local paper. For those of us who can claim to be of "a certain age," that is certainly an inspiration! :-). I worried at first that those would be character qualities that would make a mystery book so unbelievable that it would be hard to listen to. Happily, I was wrong!

Victoria is a feisty lady who knows the community and has plenty of life experience and a bit of intuitive wisdom that leads other people to turn to her for help when a series of murders start occurring on the island. She seems to be able to see the same clues others see, but to draw the correct conclusions when the murders keep happening.

One thing that I noticed about this book is that Victoria tends to respect her own age-related limits. Although she has plenty of spunk, and often rallies others follow up clues (and she is often right there with them), she is not depicted as a woman who takes ridiculous chances that leave her vulnerable to danger ( as so many authors seem compelled to do with their protagonists). This supports my long-held contention that some authors contrive situations where the protagonist does dangerous (even dumb) things that belie the credibility of that person to be wise enough to put the clues together and solve the crime. I really liked that Cynthia Riggs created a truly realistic character. Women can be wise without having to be silly.

I think that Davina Porter did a great job of finding different voices for many different characters (no easy task for a cast as large as is found in this book). My only complaint was that she read it maddeningly slowly! I hope that that was not an insinuation that because the protagonist is an elderly woman, the reader (of any age) must be slow in taking in the story and clues :-)

Actually, this is a pretty neat little cozy. One murder is a trifle grisly, but we only hear about it after the fact. Though there are rather a lot of characters to sort out, it is very easy to keep up. If you are looking for something engaging but on the light side, this is surely it!

Another Dick Francis Great!

I'm a Dick Francis Fan, so seeing so many more added to the store has just made me so happy! This title I hadn't read until just last month, so seeing Audible has it, was great! I love Tony Britton's voice, and this story, while not completely on a racing incident, had racing peripherally in the story line. I loved the story of Ian reconciling with his father, and then learning about his zany family added to this one's charm. As to who was trying to kill Ian's father, it had me guessing til the end. For one to enjoy cuddled up maybe even with a friend, you can't go wrong with this book!

Would you consider the audio edition of Hot Money to be better than the print version?

I liked this book! It was different, not your average cop-detective story, nor your run-of-the-mill who done-it. The characters are so realistic some of them could be my own brothers. I missed them once the story ended. It also paid respect to the police, not making them all out to be dumb-clucks. In fact, most of them were not only kind, but also had great intellectual input. It may have dragged a little, yet it always came back with flair. My first listen with this narrator, who also seemed to have a great intellectual input, along with female voices his own mother, should be proud of. Good Show!

What other book might you compare Hot Money to and why?

I have been reading who-done-its for thirty years, no other book compares to this. It's in a league of it's own. Original plot line, charactures and completely different approach to solving crime. I seems in crime writting today there is a standard routine to all of them, but not this one.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was the night he went into the house and felt ....well..creepy. So creepy they left.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was particually moving when his father goes to his first race; nothing like it, he gets addicted.

I miss listening to this, I am addicted.

brilliantly narrated

I've listened to many of Dick Francis' novels and they are all terrific; Hot Money is no exception.

There is a lot of "character development" in this book, more so than anything short of Dostoyevsky. Yet Francis keeps it moving along exceptionally well.

What really set this book apart was the language. If you like British English, you'll absolutely love this one. Of course all of Francis' novels use British English, but this one somehow has an extra dose that almost made me feel like I was listening to P.G. Wodehouse.

Another winner for this ex-jockey

I've been reading Dick Francis since book 1, and I've got to say that if you like any of his books, chances are good you'll like the rest.

Even tho his plots always refer to British horse-racing, there's always a different take on it. I think his stories are exciting and his characters very human.

Go for it!

Proof

Tony Britton does a great job narrating this story. Dick Francis is a great writer. As a horse lover and race fan I always enjoy the inside view that Francis provides in his stories. I always learn something from his book and in this one was about the world of wines and whiskey. The pace always moves along and this book held a few nail biting moments of suspense. I wish Audible carried more of the Dick Francis books.

Thoroughly enjoyable!!

Dick Francis has so many well-written books that it is difficult to make a list of favorites. 'Proof' is one of mine, and while I know the story very well, it is a new pleasure to listen to it being read by Tony Britton. Highly recommended.

Dick Francis is consistently excellent and this story maintains the standard. A macabre touch in the mode of murder, but Francis' usual perceptive insights into human nature. Top class.

The audio was very old, changed tones and volumes multiple time and at times had an almost chirping sound in the background.

Don't Bother

Interesting forensic detail makes this book bearable. The story is predictable and the writing is amateurish. Don't waste your time with this one!

Could have been better

I actually liked the book and the characters. They were different from the usual. However the narrator irritated me. She wasn't really a "narrator" but a reader. She made no attempt to change voices for the characters and this made it hard to follow who was speaking most of the time. If there are more books to come in this series, I hope another narrator will be chosen.

Poor reading

The plot of this book is reasonably interesting, except for a ridiculous Deus Ex Machina ending. The main problem is in the reader; she seems to have no ability to change her intonation or accent. As a result, when reading a conversation between a man and a woman, it's impossible to tell who is speaking. This detracts considerably from one's appreciation.

Barely Hung On!

I knew within the first hour I made a mistake buying this audiobook.....it was very boring, predictable and the characters were not likable at all. The narrator was annoying at best.....save your money..........I listened to the very end hoping it would redeem itself......didn't happen.

I too found the reader annoying. The way she kept droping her voice made it hard to hear in these spots. The story itself was ok, but the reader could have been a lot better.

Good writing ruined by Kindle typos, BEWARE

I just trashed "The Big Sleep" in a review, and I am about to do the same here, for the same reasons. The editing in the Kindle editions of books I pay decent money for, is atrocious. I wouldn't send out an E mail looking as bad as the typos are in this in particular book, and this series in general. It would be one thing if this was a .99 special, but it's not. I love these stories and look forward to my reading time, only to be jarred out of a rhythm each time I hit a cinder block of a typo. Please, I'm begging you to fix this. I am getting nostalgic for real books again. Sigh.

Whipped Cream Fluff for an Easy Fun Read

I like all of this series by Lawrence Sanders. These Archy McNally detective stories are all set in Palm Beach with high society characters involved in all sorts of underhanded activities. The players all become like old friends after reading a few of these books. The plots are simple and the situations and people are humorous. It is light easy reading after tackling other more complex stories, a spot of relief and light-hearted fun. The seller was fast and responsive and the book was in excellent condition on arrival.

Not the best

The Grand old Sting has too many players and that makes the story line a bit muddled. Not as enjoyable as most of the McNally books.

Fantastic fun.

Few writers are as insightful about how an inquisitive mind works while managing to entertain and amuse you. Too bad he's gone.
