Interesting

The basis of this book is very outdated it portrays a world after the USSR has destroyed the USA, however the story is amazing. After listening to the abridged version I had to got to amazon and order the book and the book is much better than the abridged audio.

I would not waste your money.

While the premise is quite interesting, you get the feeling this was written by a political speech writer. I would not recommend this audio-book.

one of my favorite books, and you found a way to ruin it. way to much detail and missions left out. seems more like you were trying to make a 2 hour movie than read what the author wrote!

Don't hold my attention like they did in the past.

I read some of the Wing Man series when I was younger and thought I'd try an audio version. They don't seem to do it for me any more.

Worst Reading of a Story Ever!

I am a casual fan of the Berserker series and like to read one every so often as a new title pops up. This book is on par of what to expect from the most recent Berserker books (a lot of diologue with little action). However, the reader of this audiobook makes it almost unbarable to listen to. You know when he stops at the end of a paragraph because he stops - for 2 to 3 seconds - EVERY TIME!! Also his inflections of the different characters make them all sound whiny and paranoid. After listening to the masterful presentation of the Ender Trilogy by Orson Scott Card, this book is the audiobook equivalent of nails on a blackboard. Do not buy or you'll be sorry!

Unbelievably bad voice talent

I wish I had read the previous review before I had downloaded this book. Unfortunately, I had short notice on a road trip and wanted something entertaining to pass the time while driving. I've listened to several of the other Berserker novels read by Barrett Whitener and always enjoyed them.

But, while Whitener's reading enhances the story, Edward Lewis's "screeching" of the book completely detracts from the experience. If I hadn't been on a long night time drive with nothing else to "read" on my ipod, I could never have finished the story.

Besides the ridiculously long pauses between paragraphs and the absolutely awful voice characterizations for the different characters,Lewis frequently butchers the book by completely screwing up the inflection and timing of the clauses in any mildly complicated compound sentence.

Although it is difficult to judge the merits of the book without being influenced by the poor reading, I thought that this was the least interesting of the half dozen of so Berserker books I have read or listened to. It seemed that every time a character or situation would start to get interesting, 10 or 15 pages of pointless dialog would follow which usually turned out to have little or no significance for the rest of the book. Even the ending was unsatisfying.

All in all, probably the worst experience I have had in over four years of being an enthusiastic Audible listener.

Still amazed by Saberhagen

I think this is the 5th book Ive listened to in the Berserker series and am still amazed at Saberhagens creativity which is yet unmatched in any of todays man v machine movies. Ive also been unable to find any other books with futuristic machines that are as powerful and believable

This book has a fantastic battle sequence where you really appreciate the technology of the Berserkers and the human ships. It was great to hear a battle story with weapons that are not the typical lazer or space rocket. Saberhagen has an outstanding understanding of math and physics and this is shown in the way he describes the battle.

Overall the story was amazing and was essentially a Moby Dick tale in the future.

A few things really annoyed me with the book. The main character is hunting a Berserker he calls OLD BLUE. It becomes evident that other characters in the book do not call the Berserker by the same name and its silly for him, the main character, to constantly refer to the Berserker as OLD BLUE as if everyone should accept his personal nickname for the machine. While everyone else know the giant machine as THE BERSERKER WITH THE BLUE GLOW AROUND IT, the main character never stops calling it OLD BLUE.

Most annoying about the story is the fact that its so impossibly unreal. The Berserker OLD BLUE kills entire planets in a few days but the main character hunts him with one ship? I dont think so. Too silly.

Put aside the impossibility of hunting down a Berserker with 1 human ship and you will really enjoy this story of 1 mans undying revenge.

Of all the Berserker books Id rate this among my least favorite. BERSERKER MAN was by far the greatest of them all but this book is well worth a listen.

I loved the story line of this book and wish they would make it into a movie. This book being written by such a well respected authority in the field of ufology did not disappoint! I would love to read more from the minds of this collaboration. I will listen to this book 3 or 4 more times for sure!

A delightful tale of a world shared by humans and A-life.

I loved this book. It's light in style and narrative structure, and rucker doesn't take himself at all serriously. Rudy Rucker is a brilliant mathmetician and science fiction writer, and his protagonist, Randy Karl Tucker, is an uneducated redneck, whose primary passion is for sex with artificial life forms that smell of cheese. Other characters include a down-to-earth California surfer girl who, along with her stoner mathmatician husband, runs a fleabag sea-side resort in the autonomous nation of California, the head of a corporate empire who made his fortune selling burgers made from the cloned flesh of his half-human wife, and a delighful host of "moldies," artificial life forms with the power of gods, short lifespans, and generally no other ambition than to buy enough of the expensive high-tech goo of which they're made to form a child to perpetuate their own software.

This book is an absolute gem.

nice story, sci-fi this is not

Science fiction needs the integral component of science. Rucker's universe leaves a bad taste in my mouth of breaking most of the laws of physics, without much more than babbly pseudo-future-science jargon, hand waving.

It's a nice enough story but file under fantasy.

Challenge and unintended consequence

4 1/2 stars. Mriy learns home is not what you expext and family is what becomes in life. Esper improves herself and Kubor is getting useful. Carl is blue ;) A lot of pain in this story...literally and figuratively. Onward to #5.

Back story for Mriy

Really enjoyed this mission! Mriy has intrigued me from the first time I read about her and it was interesting to get some background on her species but more important to me to find out about her back story. Why did she leave her planet? What is her species like?

As these missions go on, the group dynamic is changing. You can see the characters developing into a more cohesive group and discover some of their unique attributes. A big thumbs up for this one! Bring on Mission 5!

Short but good read

This time we go in depth to one of the more interesting characters, Mriy, the feline humanoid. There was also some unexpected development of another character, which I honestly found more interesting than that of Mriy. It was an enjoyable book overall and I'll def. pick up the next one.

Just did not grab me..

What did you like best about The Secret King: Lethao? What did you like least?

Nothing really grabbed at me, there was a lot of action but no substance. I did not connect or relate to any characters. I read other review and there was a mention of Battle Star Galactica but it did nothing for me.. never watched the show.

Could you see The Secret King: Lethao being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

There was no connection for me to the book. Even the different names of all the characters was so foreign to me that I was not even paying attention anymore. Maybe if I have watched Battle Star Galactica it would have made more sense.This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

EPIC, Emotional, Exciting.

WOWZA! NO... FREAKIN' WOWZA!

A nail-biter from the first, I quickly became emotionally invested in the characters. Intrigue, secrets (hard to do when emotions are literally written on your arm) and mystery. Prophecy. Politics. And a planet destroyed by a star going nova. Such a wonderfully complex plot.

The narrator did a fantastic job. I loved the unusual accents the characters had.

Richly Drawn New Universe

Dawn Chapman has conceived of a detailed, intricate society with characters that are intense and compelling. Kendro must save his people from a dying sun, an enemy bent on destroying them for apparently no reason at all, and from enemies within his own royal house. In the middle of it all, he has to find the energy and alliances to save his son and hold his number one together as well.

Aonise who seem on the king's side to begin with turn out to be enemies and others who appear sinister turn out to be friends. In the middle of it all are complex family relationships with familial struggles to work out. This is a story science fiction story fans will be able to sink their teeth into. I, for one, will be on the lookout for the next book in the series to see if Kendro can overcome all the obstacles placed before him and find the courage to face his greatest enemy and save his family and people.

Greg Tremblay does an excellent job bringing this universe to life. Each character has a distinct voice that he accomplishes through surprisingly subtle variations. I enjoyed the story much more because of his ability to consistently pronounce all of the exotic words used to create the people and language used to create the Aonise culture and society.

Absolutely FANTASTIC story!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I will definitely recommend this book. It is a wonderful and exciting story, and the narrator gave a phenomenal performance!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'd have to say that Clietta (might have spelled that wrong, but that's how it sounds when spoken ), was my favorite character. I can relate to her and therfore I connect with her character most deeply. But to be honest, this book was so well written that you tend to bond with all of the characters..

Which scene was your favorite?

The earthquake/tsunami scene was very intense.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes absolutely, but alas I had to stretch it out to 2 days *sigh*.

Worth the credit/money.

Brilliant! Give a few chapters...it's worth it!

I highly suggest reading the acknowledgments firs... IF YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE OF THE GENERAL PLOT that is. Maxwell herself praises and almost admits plagiarism of an amazing list of authors and they're works. This being a work of fiction and a great read, she has taken these theories and factoids and made me load my cart with every book she "borrowed from" mentioned in her acknowledgment. First acknowledgment ever that I listened to like 5 times! I cannot wait for the next

Great performance

The book has a very distinct voice with great visuals and imaginative use of technology. I like that the author didn't write so-called strong female characters, but rather three dimensional people, with clear motivations, human desires and flaws.

The main thrust of the story is I'm afraid a little unimaginative and it takes far too long for the main conflict of the story to materialize. Overall I really enjoyed the narrator, the characters and the visuals and so I would definitely recommend this tale.

As an aside, I would like to bring up that this book has got me wondering if the idea of Atlantis, or for that matter the relatively recent ancient alien hypothesis is fundamentally racist?

No I don't mean that I think the author is, or in fact many of the people who believe in the hypothesis are.
