Length: 9 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
The last thing Edward Schuett remembers is trying to defend his family as the zombie hordes descended on them. When he wakes up he finds his body dead and rotten yet healing quickly. Fifty years have passed and he's been a zombie that entire time, yet something has changed and he is coming back to something resembling life. His existence causes havoc among the rebuilt society of zombie holocaust survivors: some think he's an abomination and want to kill him while others think of him only as a scientific curiosity and want to dissect him.
Plagued by nightmares of what he did as a zombie, Edward must run from everyone including himself. Only one man can tell Edward what is happening to him, but first Edward must cross half the country and risk what little life he has been able to put back together.
    Editorial Reviews:
In the bloody, grimly tragic, and sometimes funny, zombie adventure tale The Reanimation of Edward Schuett, narrated in a clear and captivating baritone by David Letwin, Edward Schuett dies trying to defend his family from the great zombie uprising and becomes a zombie himself.
Fifty years pass and slowly Edward begins to discover that, while still a zombie, he feels himself slowly turning more and more human again. Feeling unsafe from his own undead kind, Edward flees, looking for scientific and philosophical answers to his shifting sense of self.

Most Zombie Apocalypse Audiobook of 2012
This review originally appeared in my blog The Guilded Earlobe
I have a bit of a reputation as a zombie enthusiast. Maybe its because I listen to and review a lot of zombie audiobooks. In 2012, so far, I have listened to or read over 35 zombie audiobooks and print books. I assume that most people dont really read that many, while I am also sure there are many who eclipse me. Yet, my listening and reading of the undead is only a drip in the bucket of whats available, and my wish list of filled with Zombie titles. Now, I would love to get to them all, and spend hours and hours dedicating myself to the best in zombie fiction, but, honestly, I often suffer from Zombie fatigue. When you read or listen to a lot of zombie novels, it all starts to bleed together. I love tales of the zombie apocalypse, where a ragtag band of survivors come together to try to find safety from the hordes, and these authors try to throw lots of twists, fast zombies, slow zombies, zombie perspectives and even sentient too using zombies, but really, the cores of most zombie apocalypse tales remains remarkably similar. How many different ways can you discuss gaining supplies, finding weapons, and creating a safe haven before it all begins to sound the some. That is, until something special comes along. Occasionally I find a Zombie title that rips me out of my fatigue and surprises me. Two years ago it was Alden Bells The Reapers are the Angels, and last year it was Daryl Gregorys brilliant Raising Stony Mayhall. So far, in 2012 I have experienced a lot of great zombie novels, some quite unique, but none really gave me the reenergizing experience. Then I listened to The Reanimation of Edward Schuett.
I really went into The Reanimation of Edward Schuett pretty cold, only knowing it was about a man who wakes up after years living the life of one of the shambling hordes of undead. The premise itself seemed unique enough where I was initially intrigued.

    Publisher's Summary:
Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
Kasey and the gang were held together by a set of rules, their Zombie Plan. It kept them alive through the beginning of the End. But when the chaos faded, they became careless, and Murphys Law decided to pay a long-overdue visit.
We had all made it through those first days of the zombie uprising, fought and bled over hundreds of miles to find each otherscratching and clawing just to keep our heads above water when our Z-Plan went to hell.
Now the group is broken and scattered with no refuge in sight. Those remaining must make their way across West Virginia in search of those who were stolen from them, fighting not only merciless terrain, but hordes of newly-thawed and ravenous deadheads as well.
A new home is found. New alliances are formed. Then an alarming development presents itself in severe and bloodthirsty fashion. A situation Kasey and the gang never planned for. When the stakes are raised even higher, when many more lives are at risk, can the group re-evaluate everything they thought they knew and survive the unknown?
    Editorial Reviews:
Elisabeth Rodgers gives an engaging performance of Murphy's Law, the second book in C. Dulaneys Roads Less Traveled series. She has a silvery voice and a remarkable ability to inhabit different characters and imbue each one with a distinctive speech pattern and tone. Protagonist Kaseys Zombie Plan has been keeping her alive. She and a group of survivors knew exactly when to do when chaos reigned, but when a slight bit of order is restored, somehow everything goes to pieces. New threats appear. Can they make sense of their present situation and continue to survive?

excellent 2nd book! surpassed my expectations!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Roads Less Traveled: Murphy's Law?
kc, jake, and mila charging into a swarm of shambling zombies being chased by the fast zombies. awesome. just awesome.
    Any additional comments?
i must say this title sat in my library for over a month, mostly b/c the 1st book was kind of lackluster. i wasn't thrilled by the direction of the story. i listened to a few other titles then thought that the 3rd book in this series is coming out at the end of the month- 6/25/13. so, i thought it was about time i listened to this book in order to decide if i'd pick up the 3rd book. plus, i was craving for a good zombie story! now, there's no question! i can't wait for the 3rd book to come out.
yes! this 2nd book was that good! i liked it much, much more than the 1st book! now, i'm really hungry for brains...i mean the next part of this story!
the story picks up 4 months after the end of the 1st book. kc, jake, zack, mia, and granny are on the trail of the convicts. at 1st, i wasn't that enthused about them chasing after the convicts, but they quickly run into another group of survivors. after a tense confrontation, this other group of survivors lets kc's group spend the night at their safe house- a prison. yes, it's like the walking dead, but that's a nice comparison, right? oh come on! don't tell me you weren't glued to your t.v. every sunday night at 9 pm when the walking dead was on! i was! and i love me some nfl! ok. i digress...
kc and her group end up at a prison with another group of survivors. the cast of survivors at the prison is a good one.

Thoroughly Impressed by Production of a Good Book
The new audiobook is out and I very impressed. First, I am going to concentrate on the audiobook. I am not going to rehash the plot. Suffice it to say that Cherryh manages to write a wonderfully complicated but satisfying book giving Hilfy Chanur center stage. I have read a whole bunch of Foreigner books since I first read this book, I can see certain similar themes-- Hilfy was once protocol officer on her aunt's ship which has diplomatic overtones, but Cherryh stays true to her vision of the Hani and other aliens she created for the Compact Space books.
Now to the audiobook-- The narrator Dina Pearlman had narrated a lot of audible books including the Weather Warden and Kris Longknife books but somehow I have never run into her until now. Her reading is measures-- not too fast, not to slow-- but never drags. She does a fabulous job with the something tongue twisting alien names and words. Her species/character delineation is very good. I was never in doubt as to who was speaking.
Very, very pleased with this audio book-- although I would like to add myself to those who would like Cherryh to add more books to this series.
best of an awfully good series
I loved the Chanur series. And this is the best of them. The humor is tighter, funnier, more real, more in every way. And the aliens are wonderfully three dimensionals that you really connect with. There's nothing cute about it. It's solid anthropological S&F, and one Cherryh's very best. Highly recommended!
Hilfy has grown up to by Pyanfar's heir in every way, captain, rogue, clan head and almost pirate. What a good book!
    Don't Miss Reading This
C.J. Cherryh is a great writer, Legacy is one of Cherryh's best works, and Dina Pearlman reads it splendidly. Legacy works as a stand-alone book, even though it is a grand encore to the four-volume Pride of Chanur series. It would be a good introduction to Cherryh's universe.
Hilfy Chanur, captain of the Hani space merchant ship Legacy, does two things that send Hilfy and her crew on a port-to-port scramble in a tangle of five-species complications. She takes what ought to be a simple contract to deliver a ceremonial object, and she agrees to deliver a stranded Hani male to the ship that "accidently" left him.
The tensions and adventures that result are exciting, suspenseful, funny, inventive, and fascinating. Cherryh is a fabulous world-builder, and is the best, bar none, at creating characters, species, cultures, and situations that drive the action forward and bring the reader along cheering for more.
    great book
love the book and the series. I listen to it several times a year. one of the best authors in science fiction

"Ms. Czerneda deftly spices an intricate, ever-surprising plot with breezy wit, characters with panache and irresistible style." (Romantic Times Magazine)
    Members Reviews:
Another hit from a rising star!!!
At the heart of this book is the relationship between Esen Alt Quar, a 500 year old shape changing being and Paul Ragem, a human male. This might make your want to put this book with the SciFi novels that are really romance novels in SciFi costumes. That would be a big mistake. Although "Changing Visions" is personality driven it is also a first class space opera full of interesting aliens, plot twists, and wonderful characters.
Ms.Chzernda shows how immage effects the way we react to an individual by showing how various caracters, who know Esen's secret, react differently to her as she changes form. At the same time she exlores how biology influences personality as Esen's physical forms effect how she reacts to each new situation. Then there is the problems that arise from the differences in the life span of the main charactes. As the plot twists throught a series of adventures that could be labeled 'the perils of Esen' you come to realise that Paul and Esen are not suffering from unrequinted love, but a bound by much ties that are deeper and truer than that. I particularly like Paul'd "It takes a villiage..." answer to the problem, even though Esen resents his solution.
The cliff hanger last chapter leaves not doubt that there will be more adventurs ahead for Esen and her Web. I can't wait.
    Love Es
I think this series is one of my favorite science fiction series ever. Es is funny, smart, nearly invincible and at the same time very vulnerable. Like most of the best books, it's character driven. Czerneda is a wonderful writer, plain and simple.
    Acceptable
While I liked the predecessor to this book, I found this one hard to read. On a gross level, the various pieces of a good story were there. There were interesting characters, well developed background and a well-developed plot.
Unfortunately, this book tends to be somewhat disjointed, with what I find to be unnecessary amounts of tension in the various threads that make it up. Items that could be resolved are dragged out in excruciating detail as the various characters viewpoints don't permit the obvious resolution. Which is ok, since most problems in life aren't easily solvable, but some of the items could be left unresolved, instead of contortions being made to wrap everything up neatly, despite the fact that a neat wrap-up isn't really possible.
The last disappointment was in the villians. I tend to find narrow-minded fanatics as villians a bit of a disservice. Creating a compelling villian that is interesting enough to be plausible while not dominating the scene is difficult in the best of times. Somehow the quality of the opposition didn't seem to rate effort the victories required.

    Publisher's Summary:
Following a devastating nuclear war, the Moral Reclamation government took over the world and forced its citizens to live by strictly puritanical rules - no premarital sex, drunkenness, or displaying of neon signs - all of which are reinforced through a constant barrage of public messages. The chief purveyor of these messages is Alan Purcell, next in line to become head of the propaganda bureau. But there is just one problem: a statue of the governments founder has been vandalized and the head is hidden in Purcells closet. In this buttoned-up society, maybe all a revolution needs is one really great prank....
    Members Reviews:
If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution
A term we use in packet assembly. When a theme is harped on too much you get parody. When we make fun of a stale theme we say weve japed it.
In a post-apocalypse world where you are tyrannized by not just your nation (aka the Moral Reclamation, or Morec), but your HOA, it is hard to be creative, to sin, to deviate from the norm. Enter Allen Purcell. His wife is bored to near hysterics. He is different. He is creative. He has a sense of humor. This impulse to speak his mind and periodically, late at night, screw with statues of sacred leaders will either destroy him or make him great. It might just do both.
This is Dick's third novel I believe and it is almost a perfectly constructed PKD novel. The tension is built in. You have him moving up in government at the same time he is secretly taking more and more risks in his own life. PKD builds this natural tension to the last few pages. The book is funny, odd, and for Dick fairly reserved.
It seems like a perfect novel for a revolution. Dick is kicking against conformity, government-sanctioned 'watching', and moral witch hunts. God would Dick ever flip at the current state of our nation. The novel seems to hark back to those revolutionary novellas from the turn of the century like Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground and Orwell's 1984. It belongs to the whole "man against tyranny" genre, but pushed through the hose of PKD it is funny, dark, and funky. Not his best, but definitely one not to miss.
Philip K Dick holds up well with time
Philip K Dick's The Man who Japed is a short story about a dystopic future where a puritanical, authoritarian regime dominates society. The tale revolves around one man, Alan, who while playing a significant role in media propaganda supporting the state, also displays a schiizophrenic nature by "japng" or pranking the statue of the historical founder of this society. Historical context is critical for understanding Dick's message as the original story was released in 1956 towards the end of McCarthyism.
Although the tale has an unsophisticated quality, partly due to its short length, Dick nevertheless focuses on the diffusion of societal passivity in the face of government intrusion into the personal lives of its citizens, as well as the extent the ruling hierarchy will go to preserve the fictional narrative for the basis of its legitimacy. Dick also demonstrates various modes of rebellion from the mundane to the complex.
The narration is well done, although females are rendered in either depressed or aging British high society styles. This is one author with a timeless quality due to themes that resonate across the ages.

David Louis Edlman's business science fiction saga that began with Infoquake and Multireal comes to a stunning conclusion with Geosynchron, the last book of the Jump 22 trilogy.
The Defense and Wellness Council is enmeshed in full-scale civil war between Len Borda and the mysterious Magan Kai Lee. Quell has escaped from prison and is stirring up rebellion in the Islands with the aid of a brash young leader named Josiah. Jara and the apprentices of the Surina/Natch MultiReal Fiefcorp still find themselves fighting off legal attacks from their competitors and from Margaret Surina's unscrupulous heirs - even though MultiReal has completely vanished.
The quest for the truth will lead to the edges of civilization, from the tumultuous society of the Pacific Islands to the lawless orbital colony of 49th Heaven; and through the deeps of time, from the hidden agenda of the Surina family to the real truth behind the Autonomous Revolt that devastated humanity hundreds of years ago.
Meanwhile, Natch has awakened in a windowless prison with nothing but a haze of memory to clue him in as to how he got there. He's still receiving strange hallucinatory messages from Margaret Surina and the nature of reality is buckling all around him. When the smoke clears, Natch must make the ultimate decision -- whether to save a world that has scorned and discarded him, or to save the only person he has ever loved: himself.

Whew, at least the series is over, right David?
Oh god this one was a slog. I got the sense Edelman was under contract and needed to finish the series, but this final installment was not an easy birth. Whoowee, I had to really bare down and go thru it slowly and with much persistence.
spoiler review; minor gripe; otherwise great series
First of all, I really enjoyed these three books. Who would have thought that such excitement could be generated around what's essentially a tale of computer programming and business? However, my gripe is as follows (spoiler): I understand the literary reasons for dystopic or downbeat denouements; such is the author's prerogative. But with such fascinating concepts bandied about in these books, to me it would have been more courageous to explore their progression into implementation rather than put them on hold until humanity is "ready." Just sayin'; if our future is created at least partially by our visions, then wouldn't utopian projections be more desirable than say cautionary tales and certainly more than tragedies? Maybe that's what I would ideally want to read, anyway. In Wil McCarthy's Queendom of Sol books, the catastrophe occurs to illustrate mankind's flaws and hubris, a writer's device, but things are left highly charged with positive possibility. In Geosynchron progress is stalled basically because the infrastructure can't handle the new technology. Well, come on.
If you are going to go, go all out
First let me say that I love the world and the idea behind the series. I had a great time reading the books and I would have given this a 5 for that. However I also want to give it a 3 for other reasons. So I settled on a 4. I am going to try to keep major spoilers out of this but there may be a few smaller ones.
My major issue with the series is for things that seemed like they should be linked, but never were.

    The Great Space Chase
Space. The Final Frontier. The elephant in the room in any novel that attempts to anchor space travel in reality. How to surmount the unimaginable distances between one solar system and another, or the even greater vastnesses of intergalactic space? Nothing on the horizon today (at least that a mere civilian like me is aware of) comes close to bridging the obstacle of time/distance/relativity inherent in interstellar travel.
Warp drive, wormholes, neurologically or chemically modified pilots, suspended animation, corporate space guilds--these are just some of the means authors have used to open up the final frontier to their characters and readers. "This Alien Shore" uses all of the above and then some. "The Up and Out" is a character in its own right here. The Gueran Outspace Guild trains (breeds?) outpilots who guide spaceships full of sedated passengers through a mysterious deep-space anomoly called the Ainniq (prounounced i' nik) that allows ships to traverse light years in a matter of hours. The passengers must be sedated, says the Guild, so that their mental activity cannot attract the dangerous forces lurking in the Ainniq.
But the Guilds monopoly on space travel is threatened by Lucifer, a computer virus that has begun to render outpilots insane and/or dead. Then there is Jamisia, a teenage girl forced to flee her home space station without any notice, without knowing why, and all alone. The Outspace Guild and a whole posse of corporate nasties are fighting to be the first to get their hands on Jamisia and whats in her brain (and just what is that?). Her only hope of salvation is a master hacker who has become obsessed with the Lucifer virus.
This Alien Shore is above all a rip-roaring, adventurous chase through space.

    The Story Picks Up Speed!
I wasn't wild about the first novel in this series but I had a feeling it was setting the stage for very exciting things. I'm so glad I hung in there! Nigel is in his element aboard Lancer, a ship modeled after the Mare Marginis wreck. Peopled with a crew of experts in every field, the ship is exploring the universe. I finally begin to admire Nigel and understand why he is the hero of this story. Nigel is a frontiersman. He is looking for the truth and nothing will stand in his way of discovering it. Lancer is tracing a radio transmission far into space, and we see Nigel grow older as it takes years to reach their destination. He tenaciously holds onto his desire to make contact with other life forms and to prove his theory that machine life is up to no good out there in the universe.
Meanwhile back on earth, strange creatures have been deposited (by guess who?) into the world's oceans. The story alternates between Nigel on Lancer, and a new hero on earth, Warren. In a chilly turn of events, we are introduced to the "swarmers", alien sea creatures that bombard ships and devour the humans inside, making sea travel impossible. Warren is a shipwreck survivor, clinging to a make shift raft and beating starvation and dehydration by killing and eating the lone swarmers that attack him.
On Lancer, earth's transmissions take years to reach the crew, so they are not yet aware of the swarmers. Instead they are focused on a planet called Isis, where organic life forms have evolved to communicate through radio waves in order to outsmart the machine life that has suppressed them.
There is so much action in this novel. Everything starts to fit together and I understand why Benford spent so much time on the themes presented in "In the Ocean of Night." Nigel is rushing toward the Galactic Center and the story is picking up speed! I can't wait to listen to the next book!
Wasn't able to even finish it
What would have made Across the Sea of Suns better?

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Maxwell Caulfield and Stefan Rudnicki ?

MUCH better than the first book.
Have you listened to any of Peter Ganims other performances before? How does this one compare?
This one is much better. In "The Infection", book 1 of this series, he was absolutely dreadful. It's hard to believe this performance is by the same person, it's drastically better.
    Any additional comments?
Still has plot holes. Gasoline should probably be degraded by now, car batteries shouldn't still be able to turn a car over on the first try. No mention of where all the ammo is coming from, especially the AT and HE rounds. Small arms firing tracer rounds makes no sense - They completely foul out a barrel in short order, unless that's all they could find, but that wasn't mentioned. 800 RPM machine guns under sustained fire for 30+ minutes would melt the barrels.. Little details that a little more research or an editor should have caught.
Still much better than the first book.
    Great Action! Great story!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Killing Floor to be better than the print version?
The sequel to The Infection is far better than the first in the series. The clicks of survivors, the military, the zombies, and monsters are now after ONE man. Some want to kill him, some want to follow him, and some want his blood to end the infection. It seems most everyone has lost their minds and irrational acts of survival seem to pop up in all groups. Gory, terrifying, and ACTION PACKED this was not a let down...I LOOK FORWARD TO BOOK THREE.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES... I tried but life got in the way!!! LOL
    An amazing story
The Killing Floor is a vivid look at this brutal post-apocalyptic world. The story picks up where The Infection leaves off following the remaining groups of survivors. In this book no one is safe and anyone can be killed at any time. What makes this story so gripping (besides the action) is the connections between the characters and their families. The interpersonal connections really help bring the characters to life and make you easily empathize with them. This book really pulls you in and drags you along for the ride. I cant wait for the next book to come out to see where the story goes.

On the eve of a secret military operation, an assassin's bullet strikes President Seth Jerrison. He is rushed to the hospital, where surgeons struggle to save his life. At the same hospital, researcher Dr. Ranjip Singh is experimenting with a device that can erase traumatic memories.
Then a terrorist bomb detonates. In the operating room, the president suffers cardiac arrest. He has a near-death experience - but the memories that flash through Jerrison's mind are not his memories.
It quickly becomes clear that the electromagnetic pulse generated by the bomb amplified and scrambled Dr. Singh's equipment, allowing a random group of people to access one another's minds.
And now one of those people has access to the president's memories - including classified information regarding the upcoming military mission, which, if revealed, could cost countless lives. But the task of determining who has switched memories with whom is a daunting one - particularly when some of the people involved have reason to lie....

    Fun Read
This a fun book that has some interesting concepts and is well written. The narrator was pleasant to listen to and I found myself listening to the whole book in one sitting.
    loved This Book
I loved the action in this book There was a feeling of 24 in the beginning of this book.
i loved the idea of being connected to someone's knowledge and thoughts.
I have read several of Robert J. Sawyer's books, and what i can say that all his books have an ending that shows how the world is changed in a lot of ways.
    highly recommended
    Great Book; Well Read
Someone else called this book a "spiritual thriller" and I would agree, as that phrase put me in mind of Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas books, and this has some similarities in terms of "feel". I liked the premise of the book; I thought it was well written and read with care. There are some unbelievable parts, but that's what it is to read this kind of book--of course, everything in it couldn't really happen. That's what some kinds of fiction are like. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.
More action and less musing than his usual fare
In the forward to Triggers, Robert Sawyer comments that because of the interest shown in his books since the airing of Flash Forward, he decided to put more action scenes in his next book. He definitely did that and he did it quite well. I wouldn't say I preferred this style which sometimes seemed to read more like a script than a novel, but it was entertaining and easy to listen to. Like all of his novels, it provided plenty of food for thought and inspired lots of "what if...?" conversations. The plot was tight and held together well until the last 10% when, in my opinion, it began to unravel a bit. For me, the ending did not seem to be the most logical progression and it felt a bit rushed. The rest of the book, however, was gripping.
And they all lived happily ever after
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you like fairy tails, go for it.
Would you ever listen to anything by Robert J. Sawyer again?
    Probably not.
