A childhood encounter with a legendary monster has left Kal with an endless supply of rage and hatred for all things Supernatural. But now the target is on his forehead, and the Un-Dead don't die easy. The Bureau has a few aces of its own-a few magicians, a cyber-ghost. Unfortunately Kal is a perennial loner.... Not a Good Book
The summary of the book makes it seem like a lighthearted version of Monster Hunter International or the Joe Ledger Series. It's more like an amateur version. The characters are not particularly likeable. The antagonist is barely memorable. The story is OK but doesnt go in depth. Unlike the Joe Ledger series, the martial arts is not believable, and the science is not well researched. It's the kind of effort that would get a C+ in a college creative writing class.
I wouldn't recommend this book.. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's not the worst thing I have ever read. I made it all the way through and don't feel like asking for my money back.
very, very enjoyable. a great listen
I loved this book! Perfectly narrated (more from mr Abdallah, please) and a great story. Couldn't fault it in any way. This is what Audible should be about.
Am eagerly awaiting the rest in the series. Glad I have discovered such a good author and narrator. A fantastic pairing.
    Damn good urban fantasy!
Would you listen to Things to Do in Denver When You're Un-Dead again? Why?
Yes, I'll listen to it again in a year or so. This is a great series with plenty of action and characters that are 3 dimensional. These books remind me a lot of the "Monster Hunter International" series except there not quite on the same level as "MHI" but I think that's due to length of the book. Larry Correia's "MHI" series has more time to expand on his character development. Having said that this is still a very well written entertaining book. I guess it's what you might call a "fun" or "beach" book. If you're a fan of "MHI" then definitely get this book! I don't think you'll be disappointed. Hopefully Audible.com will release the other books in the "Files from the BSI" series soon.
What other book might you compare Things to Do in Denver When You're Un-Dead to and why?
As I stated above, I compare this book a lot to the "Monster Hunter International" series. See above for explanation why.
Which character as performed by Damon Abdallah was your favorite?
That's easy, the main character, Kal Hakala.

    Genetically Modified Conspiracy
The story is X-Files meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers with The Thing thrown in for good measure. Nothing good can come from Big Pharma and Big Agro in cahoots with desperate, ruthless aliens. And when the aliens exist among us undetected in strategic government and law enforcement positions... what can stop them? Season of Harvest has an interesting premise centering on the real life explosion of genetically modified food. There is action and some suspense but the story is somewhat weakened by the "romance" of the two main characters which seems forced. There are other parts that also did not feel genuine to me, like the missile silo/research stations. And I did not feel the cat angle either. It was well worth my time and credit but it left me feeling it could have been better. Overall a 3.7.
WOW!! Orginal Plot That Will Have You Thinking!
What made the experience of listening to Season of the Harvest the most enjoyable?
Not what I thought the book would be and that was refreshing, even if it was a little scary.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The FBI agent, Jack and the cats. I'm a cat lover so I enjoyed the author giving cats an important role in the story.
Have you listened to any of Edward E. Frenchs other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but he was good. He kinda added to the "errie" tone of the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, I will never look at food and what we can do with it, the same. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "You are what you eat!"
    Any additional comments?
I was shocked at how much I really enjoyed this book and the storyline is something everyone would enjoy. Buy the book, I am sure you will enjoy too!!
    Excellent beginning to the trilogy!
I gave this a second read to refresh my memory before starting book 2. It was a good the 2nd time as the first. I can't wait to see what comes next!
    Surprising
Would you consider the audio edition of Season of the Harvest to be better than the print version?
    No, just more convenient .
What about Edward E. Frenchs performance did you like?
Love his voice, his inflections where spot on making the book much more enjoyable.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Hard time turning it off, which is not good for work.
Awesome work. Mr. Hicks has outdone himself again.
Excellent story line and fantastic character development. You find yourself hanging on every word wondering what happens next.

    Finally In Audio Form
What made the experience of listening to Life Probe the most enjoyable?
I first read this book in the 1980s when my uncle gave me his copy. I then rapidly went through Michael McCollum's works and impatiently waited for the next. I re-bought the books from Mr. McCollum when he started self publishing in the '90s and am continuing the trend with the audiobooks. It's fantastic that these are being released to fill the gap in the post-Christmas dry season.
What other book might you compare Life Probe to and why?
I don't know what other first contact story I might compare it to, but the writing style reminds me of Larry Niven.
Have you listened to any of Melissa Exelberths other performances before? How does this one compare?
Overall, Ms. Exelberth did a fine job, but her pronunciation was off on certain words and it stuck out memorably
Nice Ideas, but is a byproduct of another time
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not to my friends, it has some interesting ideas, but it is really racist and mysoginist, most of the time it didn't matter but I don't think I'll continue reading the rest of the series, I don't really want to put up with this again.
If youve listened to books by Michael McCollum before, how does this one compare?
    First one I read
Was Life Probe worth the listening time?
yes, it has some interesting ideas that I'm not sure I want to spoil
    New hard scifi
Would you consider the audio edition of Life Probe to be better than the print version?
I only experienced the audible version of this.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was fine, except the pronunciation of alien drove me nuts.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
New classic scifi: a first contact.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoy classical hard scifi and new versions of the same with adequate character development. I enjoyed this enough to get other audible books from the author.
Potential was there but didn't really take off.
I bought this book because I enjoyed one of the author's other books, Gibraltar Earth. This book, as a series, has potential but this particular book didn't really grab my interest until the last several chapters, and then only passingly. As for the performance, I got used to the slightly-off pronunciation of certain words after a time but it was oddly distracting at first.

They need someone who isn't afraid of the walking corpses. They need someone who would rather live in a city of the dead.
    They need Aaron.
    Editorial Reviews:
On the day "everything" died, an old and new world are created. Mark Douglas Nelson brings to life Glenn Bullions story of trust, friendship, and, of course, romance among the living who survive among the dead. For reasons he cant understand Aaron can travel unstalked among the biters. Raised to help others he saves Samantha, who has learned only the lessons of putting ones own needs first in a world where those no longer living will not decompose. That rescue is the first step on the dramatic path that will change her, him and all the others who live in fear.

    three and a half stars
the 1st hour or so chronicles the initial outbreak. joe is at work, and he and his coworkers watch a riot breaking out in new york city. they soon learn that the rioting is worldwide. joe decides to call his pregnant wife and finds out she's on her way to the hospital. he's horrified, knowing that's where all the infected are being taken so he leaves to meet her there. among the chaos and carnage, his son, aaron, is born. after barely escaping with a few other people, the story picks up 14 years later.
i enjoyed dead living b/c it was a little different than most of the zombie stories i've listened to. as the publisher's summary says, "the undead want nothing to do with him." this is an interesting plot point.
let me stop here for a second. now, i've read and listened to a lot of zombie stories, and never once have i actually found myself emotionally touched by a scene. yeah, i've laughed at the things mike talbot has said and listened intensely to jl bourne in day by day armageddon, but i've never been made to feel so sad and mad at the same time while listening to a zombie novel. geezzz...i'm almost embarrassed writing that! LOL this tragedy has a profound effect on aaron's outlook. that's all i'll say b/c i don't want to spoil it for anybody who decides too listen to it.
once aagain, there is a time slip. we find aaron living among the undead in baltimore. i liked the time slips b/c they offer the perspectives of those who have grown up after the zombie apocalypse has taken down the conveniences of modern society.
at this time, we're also introduced to band of survivors living at a high school.

Shallow story + filler = boring
The first and last hour were okay but everything between was soooo boring. I kept hoping for a story but it was more like hours of descriptions of things that didn't matter. There was too much conversation and not enough happening for hours and hours. I almost stopped listening but wanted to give an accurate review. This is the worst zombie book I've read.
why does it end half why through ?
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
only if you dont have to wait for the next instalment. I actually enjoyed this zombie story, but it ended like the first one with no real ending.
What does Daniel May bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
he was a good story teller
Was Containment worth the listening time?
no i want a proper ending, I wont get the next one because the author will just do his same old trick to keep the story going then probarly kill everyone off
    Any additional comments?
    no
    aaarrgghhhh! what happened?!!?
    Any additional comments?
i was excited to pick up this 2nd installment after enjoying the first book. strong start. well the 1st 20 minutes or so. it tells the story of what happened to part of the military. but by the time i finished, yes i finished, i was disappointed.
where's the editor? did a zombie eat his or her brain. it was like...hmmnn...i think i'll try adding this character for a little while. no, i don't like her. so, i'll make her disappear. hmmnn...let's try adding this plot device. no. i'll end it with a shot.
this story was all over the place! 1st, there's this wacko christian lady who's overly judgmental. yes, her character was annoying. she and the cop, ivanof, bond over a warped fundamentalist worldview. you get the feeling she's going to do something really bad, but she doesn't. well...not really. then, she's gone for the rest of the book. it was like a hour filler. whew! i though.

    The Three Legged Hootch Dancer
Finaly got the last book I need to complete my set. Very good imagination as usual. Just enough excitement to keep you reading.
Can an Earth carnival succeed in space?
When Thaddeus Flint took his carnival to the stars, he had visions of untapped riches on worlds that had never experienced his brand of show. Unfortunately, the reality is starkly different. He didn't count on the aliens being, well, alien. The cultural and physical differences create obstacles to Flint's ability to separate his marks from their money. The strippers can't titillate audiences that can't appreciate their anatomy, the animal trainer's animals aren't coping with the constant environmental changes, and the midway games don't play as well as they did on Earth.
Still, Flint is resourceful and a fast learner. As he figures out how to adapt his carnival to his new audiences, he slowly begins to become profitable. In the meanwhile, his star stripper is becoming mentally unhinged as she realizes that she might never find an audience that appreciates the talents that define her whole life. Can Flint find a role that will satisfy her need to perform her art or will she succumb to depression? Another brief but fun book about Earth's furthest traveled carnival!

Douglas Hall is part of a team that builds an artificial environment to simulate reality. This enables them to get public opinion polls without waiting for the opinions of people around them. But then something goes terribly wrong and his partners on the program start disappearing.
But is it a simulated disappearance, or is someone out to get them all? And what is the true nature of reality?

    Any additional comments?
Truly visionary projection of mind into the future, and the engrossing possibilities, way before Neo and Trinity. In a philosophical bent, we enter Plato's cave, and we get to struggle with the very real life puzzle of "what is real?" True, the story is a tad dated, but not too much, this isn't a one-trick pony kind of deal, and Simulacron-3 is a compelling listen. It is easy to imagine, while reading, what we would do with our own stumbling upon the evidence of this reality, and in truth, we already have stumbled upon such a concept (scientists are increasingly fessing up to the potential of a vast world hologram, or let's say it, the matrix). It is difficult to find good novels dealing with this question in any serious way, and Galouye tackles the conundrum powerfully. Art et Amour Toujours
    Simulacron-3 is so Meta
The author considers everything when building his world(s) and supplies the reader with no shortage of philosophical baggage to think about when coming away from a read. The book really shines when the main character draws logical threads between the things that happen around him.

    loved it!
the book is so colorful and dreamy even though the tale is dark and full of gloom.
Starts out well then ends with poor attempt at profundity.
The authors attempt to describe grandiose universal cosmic meaning defy logic and become nonsensical. Coupled with a sincere tone of the performance, it becomes almost laughable... then annoying.
The beginning of the story and the character development is enjoyable, but thats about it.
