    Excellent Radio Play
Listening to one good reader is nice, Multiple professional actors reading the script is sheer joy! Much fuss has been made of "loud sound effects". Set your device's equalizer to reduce the treble (thus preserving the normal voice tones) which mainly come, at the last few seconds of each episode, thus can't possibly ruin such a long well produced series. The stories are very fast paced. (explained by the author in the forward as the director's need for 'pace') A very concise summary prior to the next chapter helps if too much time has passed for you between episodes. Part 2 has a bit comedic relief - (a tad of an over used gag.) The major plots are based on several classic science fiction themes. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger or dramatic plot revelation. Also the plot has many great twists and turns. Happily you won't have to wait a week, as original B.B.C. listeners did, for each new episode. I enjoyed it SO much (such a fun, easy to follow and fast paced plot) to listen twice. A great story that I had no trouble following. (Note: I save my 5th star for Shakespeare quality stories.) This story is ingenious, thrilling, well written with a very compelling overarching plot. That should be enough if you enjoy any good writing. The backdrop may be space, computers, and technology, but like any good writing the story itself is based on the human nature of its characters - even the android (human tissue containing to help them think) type computers.
    A Wonderful Listen
This is a great story and definitely worth a listen. The story and cast deserve 5 stars. However, the sound effects are a bit loud. No problem for me as I listen in the car during my commute, and when the sounds are too loud (mostly between episodes) I just reduced the volume. I tried different equalizer settings, but those sound effects were just loud. The characters were easily heard to me, and the cast did a terrific job playing their roles. So, don't miss this fun adventure!
    Light entertainment!
This audio story is worth a credit, for sure. The story is interesting and very well "acted".
    Problems:
    1) There is an intro by James Follet which I can only assume is supposed to be a "bonus"... it's boring. 15 minutes of (poorly spoken) blah blah blah.
    2) the "sound effects" are loud and intrusive (and cheap - i.e. the gunfire sounds like tv white noise). When a chapter ends this is indicated by a squawk/whistle sound that is a couple points louder than the story itself.

    Critic Reviews:
"The solidly hypothesized science enthralls." (Publishers Weekly)

Great voice tallent wasted on a lame book
The voice talents were exceptional. I've heard them before reading other books and was impressed. However, this book was so awful, even they couldn't save it. It was painful just getting through to the end.
Bova tries to intersperse some political intrigue, so of course the women are pitted against the men in a women's rights issue. Did the "women's issue" have to be "having babies?" Talk about cliche! Bova also expresses his complete lack of understanding about astronauts & mission planning. A pilot who forgets to put on her space suit for a flight? Please!
The characters in this book were all so alike that I couldn't tell who was with whom, or which character was speaking because they all thought the same way. I'd like to say the characters were 2 dimensional, but juvenile is more like it. The robot is the only interesting or stable character in the entire book.
    Not My Cuppa
I like sci-fi, but this was more like Dallas in Space than anything else. I've never read Bova before, but I was expecting more from the futuristic space genre than this. The narration is almost unbearable. Four different readers switching off, mostly depending on who's point-of-view is being expressed. They all "performed" replete with accents that were inconsistent depending on who was reading. The story lost me about 1/4 in but I stayed with it almost until the end when I realized it was time to move on.
    Couldn't even finish it.
If this is one of Ben Bova's best works, I will skip the rest. I couldn't even get halfway through this book, I got so fed-up with all the focus on who was dating whom and who was wearing what to the ball and how much weight whomever had lost and how. At least the first half of the book is severly lacking in sci-fi elements. I got to the point where I didn't even care about the probe anymore, I was so sick of wading through all the high-school drama. Reads like Cosmopolitan magazine in space.
    Good Hard Science Fiction
I guess I grew up reading Ben Bova over the years (the Dueling Machine early on through Mars and Return to Mars later on), so I've always liked his slow paced, realistic writing style that puts character development in front of action.
Titan is as good as any of those books and very well narrated, too.

    Publisher's Summary:
Roy had been preparing for the odd isolation of time travel, but nothing had prepared him for his final arrival on Atlantis - a shimmering city far beyond his imagination! Roy knew this island's fate. According to legend, it would vanish into the sea. Roy also knew he had a limited amount of time to decipher the strange message in the Prince's mind - visions of cataclysmic events, mysterious rites to a faraway star. If Roy was in an Atlantis unlike anything the researchers had predicted, then what were its secrets? And when would it be destroyed?
    Members Reviews:
    A familiar tale, but well-told.
Silverberg seems to enjoy using letters as a narrative device (both here and in "Hero of the Empire") and it translates well to audio. The plot is interesting--but the climax occurs a little too early, and the last third of the story is predictable.
Tom Parker has crisp delivery and a pleasant reading voice.
    Disappointed
From the boring plot going exactly as expected to the shallow letter writer who is the only thing close to a character, this book has been a disappointment from beginning to end. The overall description I would give this piece is bland.
A creative sci fi view of Atlantis.
Roy and his time travel partner, Lora, have been sent from twenty-first-century to a distant past, They are not sent together but to different parts of the world in the time period. Roy is sent to observe the mysterious island of Atlantis as it existed while Lora is sent to the fringes of barbaric lands. The traveling is not in body but by piggy backing into a mind of the time. Roy is pleasantly surprised to find himself where or rather when -- he is supposed to be, sharing the brain of the Royal Prince of Atlantis. Roy knows that the city is barely a myth in the future, so he is awed to see the sophisticated development and technologies of the city.
Although he is not supposed to share the information of his travels, he writes letters to his love, Lora, to share his excitement and hopefully preserve the astounding wonders that he observes. Meanwhile he struggles to hide his letters and his presence from the very sensitive Prince who begins to think he has a demon in his head.
This is an imaginative story depicting a fantasy world of the mysterious Atlantis. I enjoyed the humor of the character and detail in the world building. The story is not overly exciting although there is conflict between Roy and his host and some drama in the visions of the cataclysmic destruction of the island. This is short and reads quickly.
This story may have be written for a younger audience. It is suitable for young teens and adults who find theories of Atlantis interesting.
Audio Notes: Tom Parkers narration seemed a bit dry at first but once I grew accustomed to the voice, it helped give definition to the characters. I enjoyed the quick entertainment offered by the audiobook.
    I am in Atlantis
Very enjoyable book, I felt like I was in Atlantis

This was a fun read / listen!
Would you listen to The Curse of Europa, Volume 1 again? Why?
Well... Normally I don't re-listen or re-read any books, but I just watched The Europa Report and now I want to revisit some of this book. Plus it is relatively short.
What did you like best about this story?
The realism, starting out with the explanation of the ship and how it created artificial gravity was cool. The first contact was cool - I just wish it was explored a bit more.
Which character as performed by Victoria Masterson was your favorite?
She didn't to many unique voices except the Russian. She did a good job with him I thought, except he talked a bit slow.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not necessary. At least not at first. Towards the midway part of the book the chapters started ending with cliff hangers which did make me want to keep going.
    Any additional comments?
I thought the story was great and well told. Some of the story seemed feasible but some things were a bit far fetched, but I guess that what makes it interesting. I don't think they could have really stayed out on Europa for as long as they did with the radiation, the book kind of (conveniently) glosses over that. This is really a story about first contact and was refreshing that the aliens were not man eating monsters (well... except... I won't say anything else to spoil anything.) This is a short story and I think some more detail could have been added to the story, but I liked it.
The narration was average but acceptable. There was some dialog that seemed a bit "off", it's hard to explain. But all-in-all ok.
I thought this book was the plot line for The Europa Report movie, but I just watched that and it does not seem to be. This book was better.
    Good story, felt rushed
I enjoyed this story, I felt the story was a bit rushed and spoon feed. But I did just come off of 130 hours of KSR Red Mars and 2312....
I think the narrater did a fine job, but I didn't feel that a space sci-fi was her thing.
No Kind words for this book
Would you try another book from Brian P. Kayser and/or Victoria Masterson?
I don't think I would. The book itself was weak and the performance was as well.

Great story but I want more. ...
What made the experience of listening to Glitch the most enjoyable?
The story was great, easy to follow, fast
What did you like best about this story?
Loved the futuristic story and the thought the author put into building the characters.
Which character as performed by Gabra Zackman was your favorite?
She did an amazing job with the male characters. Often the females interpretation of males are really bad but I was convenienced this short story had 3 narrators.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reaction. Sad when it ended. I really would like to know the rest of the story.
    Any additional comments?
    More please.
    Great story
Good story and well read. I only wish it was longer. Would love to hear what happens to max
    I'm a fan!
This is my second Howey short story. Man, this guy does not disappoint. I don't know what I can say without a spoiler for a book less than hour long. So here's some keywords... robots, ai, futuristic. It's an intellectual thriller and well worth the time.
so well presented and thoroughly enjoyable
Two formerly married scientists have sold out their love of robotics and artificial intelligence design for the far more lucrative business of making fighting robots. Wrapped in their effort to get back what they worked for is their buried search for their own humanity and their deep love and respect for each other.
Listening to short stories is at once satisfying and frustrating. On one hand it is great to listen to a tightly written creation knowing you are going to get to the characters and plot quickly, like diving into a cold lake; on the other hand, it is over before you know it, and with a good one like this, you are left hungry for more.
Glitch isnt particular surprising or even a new idea, but it is well presented and thoroughly enjoyable. We are asked to look into our own motivations. We all work for money, making decisions that benefit ourselves, sometimes at someone elses expense. Without spoiling the plot, thats the essence of this little story. When do you say, enough is enough, my conscience cant be stretched an inch more.
Glitch is read by Gabra Zackman, whose rich, deep female voice vibrates nicely in your ear. Narration is so personal and gives personality to a story. Gabra gives this one the contemplative mood that seemed just right, like being inside and outside of the characters mind at the same time. Well done.
Just to be clear, Glitch is a short story, only 30 minutes long. It does wrap up nicely, and will keep you engaged the whole time, but it isnt going to get you through much more than one way of your commute. If you are reading this review on Audible, I would recommend buying it rather than using a credit, just a better value that way.

    Members Reviews:
    It's okay, but...
I wish I liked the characters better. Colin seems to have attitudes more like a generation or two before him, which could be from him being a cop, but I know cops his supposed age that aren't nearly as ossified as he is. There seems to be no popular culture, though the internet experience is well integrated for the younger characters (but no smartphones and no Twitter? Really? And if Vanessa's credit cards are no good, then how is her cell phone still working, with no contract? Plus, even if she cut her card up, if she still has an account at Wells Fargo, she could find it somehow by working with customer assistance, once she reached an Actual Human). Colin and Vanessa once again fail to recognize how much they resemble each other in characters, and I wanted to smack Marshall for hating on his mother the way he does--yeah, yeah, Daddy paid all the bills all those years, while apparently doing squat for his daughter, and it's all so sad that Mommy didn't stick around to wait on him, but Marshall is a special case, always getting subsidized all his life. Gee, kid, grow up some day!). Why Louise is not tracking Teo down with an axe and filing for child support, I do not know; in fact, I'm very surprised the state of California did not require her to do so when she filed for unemployment. I am also a little surprised that beef was running short--California is a huge cattle grazing state, as anyone who has ever passed the feedlot south of Stockton while traveling on I-5 can testify. With more water, the Imperial and Central Valley would be planting fence-post to fence-post, and the hills up on the side would be mobbed with grazing cattle, since the grass would stay green past June.
I am also surprised that Hollywood hasn't made a disaster movie about the eruption and hired Kelly as a consultant--it's been a couple of years, at least, and some studio is going to think of it.
And I would also like to see what the people at the top are doing; we saw that to good effect in the Lizardwar books.
Yes, I'll buy the next ones because I do want to see what comes out; but if there was ever a total disaster in the LA area, I'd count on Colin and Vanessa to survive it (though Vanessa is going to have to stop dating scary men, she's one Mr. Goodbar away from ending up strangled, I think).
Oh, yes, the guy with the doctorate in Ancient Greek; he'll probably end up looking up Vanessa again, he can't stop thinking about her all the time. Not a good sign.
    Pretty good read.
I picked up the first of this Trilogy from a take one leave one library while on vacation. It was pretty good so I had to buy the next two to see how the whole thing comes out.
Its entertaining reading but not much substance.
    A good outing
I like Harry Turtledove's writing a lot and I was a little taken aback by this story seaming to start up after the big even of the super volcano eruption.

The narrator is quite good, but the muscial & sound-effect interludes can be distracting. The novella is excellent and thought-provoking.
    Lessons in Sci-fi
Beggars in Spain is a great Sci-fi story that hits the head of the human hatred nail. A must read for the Sci-Fan.
    Read first time in 1992
This novel was the first for me to learn about the up and coming Internet. When at me 22 years, the sleepless factor resonated an urge to identify with those adolescents that were thrust upon each other in such a hearty manner that offered an avenue to understand that Yagiism.
The Yagiism didn't matter much to me. I guess its because, Nance Kress is such the wordsmith that she can write on many levels to attract all interested readers.
I began to adore the concept of 'the dragon' more through her writings than with any other other author.

    Fun original sci-fi
While not perfect, Dark Ship Thieves is a refreshing fun and original sci-fi with a charming female protagonist and great reader.
    A Heinleinian woman
You have to love a heroine named Athena Hera Sinistra. By the end of the first chapter, we've learned that our 19-year-old protagonist is the terror of everyone she's ever crossed paths with, capable of beating up professional mercenaries singlehandedly, and has a rack that makes men stop to stare in the middle of a crisis. A little Mary Sue-ish? Well, some of her preternatural abilities are explained later in the book, but yes, we've got some serious Heinleinian wish fulfillment going on here.
"Heinleinian" is not necessarily a bad thing. Darkship Thieves reads a lot like an homage to Heinlein's classic space operas, with hyper-competent, rather ruthless but ultimately moral protagonists sharing pithy words of wisdom and vaguely libertarian sentiments while kicking bad guys in the crotch.
Athena Hera Sinistra is the daughter of a Patrician, one of the "Goodmen" who rule Earth as an oligarchy. Spoiled, tempestuous, brilliant, beautiful, and dangerous, and with some series Daddy Issues, she finds herself seemingly being kidnapped aboard her own father's space yacht by his mercenary goons. She escapes, doing plenty of damage in the process, and runs into the "Energy Tree" that someone centuries ago created to float beyond Earth orbit and grow "power pods" which are harvested for Earth's energy needs.
Okay, the science is a little dodgy.
Athena gets picked up by one of the legendary "Darkship Thieves," who steal power pods and flee back to their secret base in the outer solar system. Carried off by the superhuman genetically-enhanced cat-man, Athena begins what is of course an inevitable kiss-kiss-slap romance with our futuristic space highwayman. She learns about their advanced asteroid, "Eden," run along vaguely anarcho-libertarian principles, and begins to become integrated into their society. Then her boy gets captured while making another power pod run, and she has to go back to Earth for a confrontation with Daddy Dearest, in which we learn all kinds of deep dark secrets about Earth's real history and Daddy's sinister plans for his little girl, and an entire gang of space biker allies is introduced in the final act.
Darkship Thieves was a fun romp. The writing is just okay and the story was, as I said, largely rehashed Heinlein, with a stronger romantic element, but if you like classic SF, this is a fairly well-executed tribute.
    Loved It!
