In their individual cultures, these orphans were seen as children. At best, they were ignored by their elders. At worst, they are treated as nuisances, told what they could and could not do.
But no one ever told them they couldn't save the universe. Nobody knew they would ever get the chance....

    Like Hollywood
Characters make dumb decisions but like Hollywood movies they magically survive and win when they should have died. Like with Hollywood movies you have to suspend belief in order to enjoy it. If you followed these characters into battle you would die for their decisions.
I need a white board to keep track of this book.
Would you try another book from Hugh Howey and/or Jennifer O'Donnell?
I think this is the last book in this series for me.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I am so tired of trying to keep track of what plot line I am following. First you are in the present then your are in the past, then the present, then the past. It is like trying to watch two different movies at the same time when they switch from one projector to the other randomly. Actually there are more then two because you keep switching between characters randomly also. You start with one character in the present then switch to the past in the middle of some event then back to the present in the middle of the event in the past and back and forth randomly or maybe to another character and do the same thing with that character while leaving the first character hanging in the middle of something..
Molly fyde and the fight for peace
Okay, I have a problem with the whole series. The main character is supposed to be a strong female protagonist but really has to be saved by Everyone else the entire series..... Seriously, I was talking out loud in certain sections asking questions like... Are you kidding me. The rest of the story is solid but main character base not believable.
This, after my second reading. MOST AMAZING SERIES
I love this series so much I began my second listen almost immediately. I give this a review of 15 out of 10 supposed to be highest. The Burn Saga has it all. Wonderful science fiction! A thriller of galactic proportions! Full of action, suspense, betrayal. romance. Characters you know and grow to love and others you hate. On par with Star Wars, Star Trek, Avatar as well as all the classic science fiction we all love and must read again and again. Hoping for a series of movies to bring it to the world at large. Well done Hugh Howie!

    Exuberant Steampunk Swashbuckling Adventure!
The Romulus Buckle series is an exuberant, swashbuckling tale of a dystopian future set in Los Angeles and populated with a great cast of over the top characters. The story is packed with non-stop action and adventure and really sets a great bar for inventive steampunk romance.
Romulus Buckle is the young captain of the Pneumatic Zeppelin - part of the fleet of his father's clan, the Crankshafts. When the leader of the clan (and Romulus' adoptive father) is kidnapped, the Buckle and his Zeppelin will travel across the Los Angeles landscape, fight prehistoric monsters, clan armies, and more - all the while assisted by his capable crew.
I really enjoyed this book - it's a book that has a strong enough plot, great world building, and all the adventure you'd expect from a pirate type adventure. There are even moments of amusement and humor thrown in at some of the situations in which Buckle finds himself. Add in Martians, Los Angeles ruined and under snow, and some inventive steampunking (where steampunk IS intrinsic to the plot and not set dressing) and you have a great read. Los Angeles natives will especially appreciate this book and its ruined Southern California locations.
I listened to the Audible version of this book and it was just a bit too over the top, though I appreciated all the characterization the narrator put into the reading.
In all, this is a gem in the steampunk or dystopian genre.
Move Along To Better Works In The Genre.
Sometimes, no matter how you try, you can't get into an audiobook.
It can be the premise. In this case, I LOVE the premise.
Sometimes, it can be the delivery. In this case, Daniels is passable.
So, why did I have so much trouble with this audiobook, starting it over numerous times to make sure I was hearing it correctly, re-evaluating the plots and the "believability" of the work?
Let's figure this out by looking at what good writing does for the reader or listener.
Good writing takes us on a journey that must, by the very genre's nature, suspend disbelief. It's a requirement. This is done by more than interesting action sequences, which this work DOES have.

This is how Cyberpunk should be done!
What did you love best about Metrophage?
It is just archtype cyberpunk. I'd put this up there with William Gibson or walter Jon Williams. It seems a bit dated now, but he nails the genre so perfectly you can't help but love it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Metrophage?
Just the imagery throughout the story is worth a listen all by itself. The story and characters are great but the author pays such attention to every little detail. It's mind-boggling.
Have you listened to any of Peter Ganims other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not heard any other performance of Mr. Ganim's previously. He has a rich smooth voice and has a good range of voices. I'd love to hear him on some other books.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Metrophage. LA is in flames.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book. Be advised this is not Sandman Slim. The tone and writing are much different , but excellent nonetheless. The story has a few explict sex scenes and lots viloence and drug use (staples of cyberpunk literature). So, definitely not for the kiddies. I strongly recommed this book if you love cyberpunk.
    Classic Cyberpunk
Great narration and story. Would like to listen again. Story complex, rich with detail, honed with a sweet edge of pulp sci-fi. Beautiful writing.
    Way Unimpressed
Would you try another book from Richard Kadrey and/or Peter Ganim?
I have read all of the Sandman Slim Series and the Butcher Bird novel. Crazy about about them all.
Has Metrophage turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No.
Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Ganims performances?
No. Not a fan of his delivery at all.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I wasn't impressed with the writing (oy vey the number of times the phrase "You really don't know" was used to set-up exposition) or the narration. I found Peter's performance too monotonous.
    Any additional comments?
If this is your first Richard Kadrey novel, buy it. Because you will find all the rest of the author's work to be a ridiculous improvement.
I don't see the appeal. There's very little story
The whole book is a pretty good tour through an atopic future LA, but the main character is useless and never really gets any better. The plot makes little sense and tries to come together at the end but mostly fails. The book wanders from one violent event to another with little to hold it together. Kadrey tries to be William Gibson and doesn't get there.
Highly rated story ? Killed by bad naration
I went for Metrophage having read good reviews of it else where and seeing it on a number of must read cyberpunk lists. How good it really is I'm not sure. The story in hindsight was fine, but not great, the main character was a tad flat, but what really ruined this for me was the narration. It is so bad and soulless that at first I thought it was computer generated.

I don't know what to think
If you could sum up Molly Fyde and the Blood of Billions in three words, what would they be?
I don't know. :) I keep finding myself buying the next book and listening to it raptly, but I can't tell you why. It's not the best book I've heard. It has some slowness and some weakness to the plot and the happenings. The characters are interesting and varied but kind of obvious. Overall, I like it, I just can't say, "here is why I like it." Now I'll have to listen again and again to figure out why. This might be Hugh Howey's whole evil plan, to make me listen again and again!!! Sigh... It might just work.
    disappointed
story greys chewy, long fighting scenes that go no where. like watching matrix 2 in slow motion and without the graphics.
    previous book was much better.

    A Pleasantly Different Urban Fantasy
The Shambling Guide to New York City by Mur Lafferty is her best work to date. I have listened to her podcast for over five years and have read or listened to most of the things she has written. During this time, her work has steadily improved. Don't take that as an implication that her early work was poor. I'm not saying that. Merely, her work has evidently matured and I found this book to be the best of her work thus far. Her nomination for the Campbell Award is well earned.
Urban Fantasy has been all the rage for over a decade now, so it's nice to see an author I enjoy bring something new to the table.
The accepted premise of most Urban Fantasies is that monsters of one form, or more likely many forms, share society with humans and humans fail to see them all around because we choose to not see them. Our puny human brains can't come to grips, for some reason, that monsters exist and we come up with excuses to explain their evidence away. I generally find this premise a little more than I can swallow, but I choose to not let this one thing ruin all the excellent stories that have been coming out. The Shambling Guide is no exception in using this trope.
What separates The Shambling Guide from other Urban Fantasies is the protagonist, Zoe. Zoe is not a Monster Hunter, or a Witch/Wizard, or even "In the Know" at the beginning of the story. She's an office worker. Specifically, a publishing editor. (Bet the people in the industry got a kick out of this one!) It was refreshing to read a story with an "every day" hero. Such heroes are my favorite. It gets boring reading about "experts" in the monster field with all the answers deal with problems. I'd rather read about how a "normal" person reacts to being thrust into an extraordinary situation.
Mur Lafferty handles Zoe's introduction to the local Coterie (as opposed to "monster") community in a very natural way. Zoe needed a job. If monsters existed alongside and unbeknownst to humans, this seems the most likely reason for a human to be introduced into their secret world. From there, Zoe's story unfolds into a "Save the City while protecting the Coterie Charade" as she works as the editor to the creation of a Monster's guidebook to visiting NYC.
That's as much of the plot as I'm going to give away. What I will say: This book was fun to listen to. There was a surprising amount of humor. Often used in Urban Fantasy, but rarely is it organic. The humor in the Shambling Guide came about as a natural consequence of the story unfolding and Zoe simply living in a strange new world.

Christmas in February! Chalker's Triumph Arrives!
If you've read any of my reviews of Chalker's work, then you know I'm one of his biggest fans. Why? Simple. He frequently twists the scifi and fantasy genres, writes deep adult literature that engages, devises exceptional plot lines, crafts characters with "character," and throws our perceptions of what to expect on it's ear.
    In two words: "He delivers."
And in Chalker's Soul Rider series, he delivers all of those things, and in spades.
Now, prepare yourself. This isn't for children. It's for adults, and at times it will push your buttons severely. It will challenge your perceptions of the sexes, may upset you, and does not give you a huge background story upfront (It's revealed MUCH later.). So, you know what this means, dear Audible reader.
Uh oh - You're going to have to THINK.
Will I tell you the premise? Some of it, but nowhere near all. Why? Because as usual, I feel the journey can be spoiled, especially in this fantastic series. Also, Chalker gives no hints, and I want you to at least have a bit of background. So, pay attention - Here we go.
Imagine a world draped in the fog of flux powers drifting on the winds, a paradise, purgatory and hell combined, one that humans can, if they have the very rare ability, control the flux, to "magic" the very forces of nature around them, to even change the minds, passions and bodies of men and women. They can, with enough flux control, craft cities and even command nature to create a personal paradise out in the flux. Imagine cities sparsely scattered across the landscape, each unique, each having a tenuous hold against these unbridled powers that vie for control. Each holds back the flux and its wizards at bay by resorting to totalitarian, religious, military or even otherworldly sway over their masses to maintain control and wealth.
These powers are not judicial in their choice of who can shape the flux - Heroes, villains, maniacs, zealots...there are no moral boundaries of who is chosen, and the few cities across the flux have their own a shaky and tenuous trade agreements maintained by stringers, humans who trade goods, services, and even people to their own ends. Wizards themselves, they live out in the flux, but like anyone who rides the flux, you stay in the flux too long, YOU become twisted in your own dark nightmares, and eventually are driven insane.
    But there is more...
There are dark forces, unseen and unexpected, beneath all this. Inhuman. Unfeeling. They have a sweeping, world-changing plan. And they have chosen a human to join with, to make this a reality. And the human host has no idea that this has already begun.
Would you believe there's more? A LOT more?
Well, there is, and again, Chalker DELIVERS. I read this series a long time ago, and consider it timeless and required reading.

    Members Reviews:
Great Listen - But - The Weakest of the Trilogy
    Any additional comments?
The Humanoid Touch is the third and final installment of Jack Williamson's Humanoid trilogy of stories.
The first story in the series, "With Folded Hands", is easily the author's best work. This was followed up by "The Humanoids", which was great, but got a little too far-fetched by the end of the novel for my tastes.
The Humanoid Touch focuses less on the actual robots known as The Humanoids and more on characters and character development. To my surprise, the robots don't even make an appearance until about halfway into the novel. Although this book was much less far-fetched than the second installment of the series, I would still consider it to be its weakest link.
I won't give anything away, but you really DO need to read the previous books in the trilogy to properly follow what is happening in the story, which I consider to be a drawback.
Also, although the narrator in this book IS very good, he isn't QUITE as good with the material as the reader from both of the previous two audiobooks (Which can be found as a set of two, together on Audible).
Still a very enjoyable conclusion to The Humanoid saga though.
    8.32 / 10.00
A wonderful coming of age story.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Humanoid Touch to be better than the print version?

    Four Stars
    another book
    Great
Storm of the Dead is the second installment in the Lady Penitent series. First book, The Sacrifice of the Widow, failed to impress me. Had the substance, but lacked any serious character development and most importantly abused resurrection of characters.
This book has a beautiful plot, and generally a great feel to it. The flow is brilliant, and I have to confess I gulped it down in one huge bite. The Author really breathed life into the city of Sshamath, and introduced some new interesting characters. Character of Q'arlynd is as strong as it was in the first book, but other characters get significantly more development in this installment. We really get to know Cavetina, the new Halisstra, and Karas. Things happen for a reason in this book, and motivations are believable. Really nothing bad to say about plot, writing, characters or world building.
Unfortunately, the biggest flaw of the first book still persists here. The author is taking character resurrection so lightly, without any regard to the suspense of the book. Sentences such as "I hope something will be left from her body, so we can resurrect her.", are commonplace.
It is a major flaw in my opinion, but the book sat so well with me, I cant mark it down because of it. Simply a great book, well worth your time.
Well crafted and full of excellent drow lore references
The pace was good and the characters were interesting. Sometimes the time line felt confusing. I really enjoyed the book.
