Just finished my 3rd 'prey' novel and moving quickly into my 4th. Enjoy these books a lot and narration great. Thankfully there's lots more to come.

Fine Art Intrigue Set In Iceland

I enjoyed this story about a woman working in her native Iceland as a director at a local museum annex. It has aspects of a mystery but is more of a window into a different world experience. The story is heavy on the internal thoughts of the main character as she maintains a placid exterior and finds her way in a new job. The depiction of Iceland, Russia and the world of fine art collecting is all fascinating.

The narration is good. The Icelandic names and place names were very complicated. Having the narrator helped me get through them with at least a chance at the correct sound. If I had read the book I would have been guessing and probably making up pronunciations as I went along! So it was a help.

Recommended if you are interested in art, art history, some suspense, and a visit to a very different part of the world. Engaging and thoughtful. Glad I gave it a try.

A meandering story about Fine Art

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this book unless my friend was really interested in art and art galleries. I felt that not a lot happened in the novel, characters were not developed well and the plot, when evident, jumped about a lot. I bought this book because it is by an Icelandic writer. Maybe I was expecting a different type of book.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I felt the ending was a bit lame. The 'love interest' which was hardly there anyway just fizzled out.

I think this book is a 'rites of passage' for middle aged women. If so it definitely had the wrong ending.

Have you listened to any of Mary Robinette Kowals other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard this reader before. She reads well and does numerous different voices with conviction. I guess she isn't British as she read a couple of words wrongly. I remember particularly the word 'plait' which she read as 'plate' which confused me somewhat for a minute. 'She wore her hair in a long blonde plate!'

Could you see The Perfect Landscape being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I don't think this story is dramatic enough for TV or film. THere are too many locations and flashbacks too.

Country Pulp About A Man Who Is A Stranger In A Strange Land

Gil Brewer was one of the greats of the pulp era and it is to our benefit that Prologue has decided to re-publish many of his works. Brewer would write feverishly for days in heated passion and then fall into exhaustion. He tried to kill his pain with alcohol and eventually drank himself into oblivion. His characters were all tormented by demons from the past, trapped by situations, tricked by temptresses that they could not resist.

The Angry Dream is a bit of a break from Brewerâs general work which had at its focus St. Petersburg or other Eastern cities and involved characters framed by young women who had the main characters in a hypnotic trance until they finally realized who they had been with and what their âangelâ had done to them. The Angry Dream takes place in a small farming town in the country. Brewer is never explicit as to where the town is. Pine Springs is somewhere where the first snows come at the end of October. It could be Wyoming or Montana, somewhere out west.

The back cover blurb of the old paperback suggests that it is a story about three women trapped in a town with only one way out â to kill the narrator. This publisherâs blurb, however, simply does not give a hint as to what the story is about and, truth be told, is simply not accurate. And, the first of the women listed in the blurb- Jeannie â is but a bit character.

Al Harper has been away from Pine Springs for eight long years. He left because he couldnât stand his father anymore. His father was a miser who held the mortgages on half the townâs properties and never gave anyone any slack. Harper left and never came back, not even when he heard that his father had hung himself in the bank where he had worked, found by his employees hanging from the antlers mounted on the wall. Harper had, instead, moved from town to town, never sticking anywhere. In New York City, he had gotten a job as a driver for a man, never realizing that he was the getaway driver for a jewel thief. Prequel? Sequel? The Plot Needed More

I slowly, ever so slowly, became engaged with this story, but found it lacking fundamental elements of a good mystery. For a plethora of reasons, I felt I had begun reading a novel in the middle of a series and desperately needed the backstory. The author made attempts at providing one, but somehow, it seemed a bit contrived and shallow.

Still, I found the premise of the story and the twisted, turning familial crises interesting enough to keep me with it to the end. The "mystery" is a good one, is was just that the story supporting the mystery needed bolstering.

Set in Europe, the background of Zurich and elsewhere made for an interesting locale for the events surrounding the missing boy.

Can't say I wasted my time or money, but this was not the best I've read recently by far.

Yes. Well read and well plotted. I am not usually a fan of short stories but these were a refreshing change. I am hoping that a future book will "star" this character.

This is the fourth in the Lena Jones series of a Scottsdale Arizona private eye. Here she is hired to provide security while a documentary is being filmed involving the escape of German POWs from a prison camp in Arizona. The same night of the escape, a family was slaughtered in their home. The only survivor, a son, was blamed, and tried for the crime but was not convicted. However, his life was ruined because everyone, except the jury, believed he was guilty. Now, 60 years after the original event, one of the Nazis who was in that camp, who escaped that night, and who was allowed to emigrate to America because of his scientific prowess, is murdered. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely! I have been longing for a well written, well narrated, gripping crime thriller and this definitely fits the bill. I was gripped by the storyline and really didn't know where it was heading. The characterisation is convincing and it is superbly narrated by Caroline Lennon.

I would suggest starting with the first in the Maeve Kerrigan series but think this works equally well as a stand alone novel.

Why aren't there more of Peter's books on audio???

Like my headline suggests! this book is just 1 of Peter Corris's fantastic Cliff Hardy series & i just can't get enough of these books. In my opinion, the narration can make a good audiobook, & the performance of Peter Hosking is flawless, & makes it hard to not listen to it all in 1 go!!!. Obviously the storyline has to be good too, & Peter Corris has yet to fail in keeping me entertained while on the road, & being a truckie on the long haul, i really appreciate a good audiobook like this one!!! More please!

Great Read

I really enjoy this author's writing, and have read everything he's written. My only problem is he doesn't write novels often enough. Can't wait for the next book.

Enjoyable, Very Fast Paced Page Turner, amazed at....

I'm amazed at the intricacies of the plot in this suspense novel and even more amazed at how quickly the author tied everything together at the end of a really really messy fast moving chain of events. This really takes a great deal of writing skill.

Its the story about an East coast cop whose family is brutally murdered and the emotional and mental illness that ensues for Joe Reddick after discovering his family dead. He moves to Los Angeles California to start a new life and is quite successful in spite of his nightmarish past.

He gets a job in the District Attorney's office as an investigator and marries and has a boy child, rebuilding his work and family life. His past looms like a big elephant in the room and drives the protagonist and the plot faster and faster forward. Other than that, I do not want to spoil it for you. You'll be amazed at how he pulled it out at the end!

Brilliantly dark

Assume Nothing is tough as nails and black as ink. It tracks a wide cast of characters who range from bad to despicable, and I loved it! There is every shade of moral ambiguity here. The main character, Riddick, is one who will test your sympathies but ultimately becomes an avenging hero I completely rooted for. The justifications for violence in this book are complex and real. But really it was the action, tight plotting, unexpected twists and the underlying heart that really made it for me. It's not easy to make a story that is so hard edged also so meaningful, but Haywood has pulled it off again, much like he did in Cemetery Road.

The story moves along and never lets up. GET IT!

Disappointing

What started off as a great story ended up being a "why didn't you. . ." Reddick works for the Attorney's Office, but never brings any law enforcement in; instead, he goes all lone wolf, when he clearly could have had help. And, with help, the danger is immobilized.

I have never written a review and I read around 3 books a week.

After reading half, I knew I was wasting time, but I persevered and am now wondering why I didn't trust my instincts.
