What made the experience of listening to Red Light the most enjoyable?

I really like the narrator, she makes Katie Maguire come to life, and transports you to Ireland. I enjoy the rather gory macabre type of criminal detective work and how the baddie "gets it" in the end. But thats my preference.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy Stuart Macbride then you will enjoy this series. Start at the first book though, it introduces the characters. Make sure you have eaten first, unless you are on a diet. It puts you off your food a bit.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story should have stayed with the murders and not splayed off onto the supposedly sexual life of the police woman.

No but the reading was fine.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Red Light?

I would have cut out all the stupidity, e.g. there is no need for the boyfriend to say he had taken the dog out and it had done it's business! Also there were parts of the book that could never have been true in a murder scene, there were too many anomalies. It seemed that the writer kept going off into a 'coronation street' mode, with the listener often feeling as if the book had, now and again, to be aimed at those who read Mills & Boom!

Book was weak and didn't like narration either, victims cries of indignation was feeble

Not as gory as books 1 and 2, but a bit repetitive

The third book in the Katie Maguire series, and the topic this time is sex trafficking and prostitution. While I found this installment to be less gory than the previous ones, it was far more emotional because of the poignant stories of the girls/women affected. It wasn't as suspenseful as the previous books as there was no real mystery to the whodunit, and the plot was fairly simple. Despite of that, Masterton managed to create another very engaging story that was difficult to pause once I've started listening to it. I adore Caroline Lennon's narration now that there are no American accents involved.

Things I didn't like: there's the now obligatory lesbian attraction again. That's becoming too repetitive now.

It was an interesting enough story, but not really compelling. The characterization and motivation was not up to Wilhelm's usual in the Barbara Holloway series.

A fun read

Rather different from most of Wilhelm's novels, a clever ghostly detective agency...sort of Nick and Nora come back from the grave to solve crimes...

Still one of the best authors of crime dramas or speculative fiction writing.

Humorist Short Story

This is a cute short story. Two people are accidentally murdered. They are in a sort of limbo. The two team up to solve a couple of mysteries.

I gave it 4 stars because she didn't explain much why they're in this limbo state, or about the holding unit. I guess she didn't because even the characters don't know exactly what it is.

This is book 2 of the series, and it picks up from

book 1, so make sure you read that first.

Agent Dominga Esteban is on a mission from Cuba,

Realistic

I enjoyed this authors ability to place the reader at the scene and the character seems to be believable. I enjoyed good winning out over evil and there was sad realities involved in his type of work to make it realistic.

Great Fantasy

Great fantasy! Nice flow of adventure and travelogue. It does keep you guessing where the next chapter is going to take you.

If you are a Key West regular or frequent visitor, you'll like the references to our favorite haunts. Will keep "Bill Craig" on my watch list for an interesting read,

Bill Craig has a knack of drawing you into the adventures of his characters....great escape from everyday drama as you follow along in one of his characters shoes... sleuthing around and being part of the adventure.

Fun Read

I love the Keys and there is lots of detail that takes you there. I put this book in the category of entertainment. Characters are likeable and the story line does not stall. Have fun!

Really had a hard time stopping from listening, every time I got time to listen. If it was read as a book, I would say a page turner. Love the characters, the story, and the teller. Can't wait to read more of Maria Hudgin's books, or get them o Audible!

Renko still delivers a satisfying read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, after the earlier Renko novels have been read. The character has not developed a great deal psychologically but still engages.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Zhenya, Renko's ward. If there are further Renko novels I hope Zhenya is central. Perhaps a spinoff set of novels for Zhenya.

Did Henry Strozier do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

I found the narration too dour in tone. I know that the tone of the novel is dark and depressed but Strozier still needs to animate the narration more crisply.

Disappointing

I read and enjoyed Gorky Park many years ago and so looked forward to hearing this book. Sadly, I did not enjoy this book. I thought the plot was thin and the characters stereotypical. The narrator did not seem to enjoy reading it. In my opinion he read the book is if he did not understand or like it.

Despair and uplift in equal measure, and honest man struggling through a morass of apathy drawing out the best in other people

Lousy Kindle copy of an ok book.

The story in this novel is very interesting, but the writer's use of language and style is uneven and at times distracting. The Kindle version of this book is extremely poor. The font cannot be controlled. It reads like a bad photocopy. A good number of pages are almost illegible. Not what one would expect for the price of book (i.e., the Kindle copy is not a good buy!).

Hysteria at Mont St Michel

OMG - every character in this book is hysterical and unbelievably wordy in their hysteria. The main characher had a bad dream when she was a child, and is still in therapy over it 30 years later.

I haven't finished it (500 pages???? great scott!) I'm skimming through the endless histrionics, hoping to find the meat of the story. The only character I like is the main character's girlfriend, who celebrates madly when the main character apparently dumps the married man she's kanoodling with. Oops! Celebrated too soon!

I"m pretty sure there's a story here. If I find it, I'll let you know.

historical fiction

I liked the Angel's promise. I specifically looked for the book that was recommended to me. I will be going to the Mont Saint Michel, and the historical background seems to be well researched and will make my visit of that site more interesting. Easy read, nice mix of history, romance, mystery. My wife took it as soon as I finished, and she is totally immersed in it.

The Angel's Promise

THE ANGEL'S PROMISE is a well researched book with a compelling story. I noticed two Biblical mistakes, one on page 111 in the Kindle edition, where it says that "Yahweh promised never to curse or destroy the world again." That is not accurate. God only promised never to destroy the earth by water again.

Everything a Suspense Novel Should Be

Continuing the series . . . well paced plot, good writing.

A very enjoyble read.

Great Novel, but he hates NJ???

This was a great novel, as each chapter rolls along, there is a revelation. The revelations upon revelations is very reminiscent of the old Ross Macdonald, which is high praise indeed. Healy's John Francis Cuddy, like MacDonald's Archer, also has the uncanny ability to get people to talk to him. Cuddy is likeable, but a bit of a goody-goody.

Of course, Cuddy is taken to NJ along the way, and let me tell you, dear reader, NJ is nothing like this. But hey a fun novel all around. Give it a shot. The novel revolves around an airplane crash, a dead furniture salesman, and a missing niece. Everything is wrapped up quite nicely, but is still difficult to figure out. A good whodunit.

Convoluted plot

The murder(s) that take place in this novel are all "off screen". We only learn about them bit by bit through the narrative of Detective Cuddy. He does a truly Columbo-like job of interviewing and re-interviewing witnesses. In the end the explanation for what happens seems a bit of a stretch.

Also, the characters lack depth and Cuddy's own romance fails to take flight.

I give this effort a moderate to good rating. Worth reading, but not enough to make me really want to pick up another Healy book.

Brilliant as usual and almost managed to pronounce local place names correctly although "Macquarie" was very weird!

Excellent

This is a very good book. The pacing is slow but it is cleverly written. This book is perfect for a cozy afternoon or a long drive. I will buy the next book in this series.
