    Title: The Philadelphia Quarry
    Subtitle: Willie Black, Book 2
    Author: Howard Owen
    Narrator: Kevin Kenerly
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-15-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Black is back. Willie Black was last seen, in Oregon Hill, risking the final tattered remnants of his checkered career - and his life - to free a man almost everyone else believed guilty. Willie's still covering the night police beat with its violent drug deals and dirt naps, still avoiding the hawk that periodically swoops down to pluck away a few more of his colleagues in a floundering business. He still drinks too much, smokes too much, and disobeys too much. The only thing that keeps him employed is that he's a damn fine reporter. Even his beleaguered bosses would concede that.
Willie finds himself neck-deep in a part of Richmond that a boy growing up in Oregon Hill could only experience through illicit midnight sorties to the city's most exclusive swimming hole. The Quarry was where Alicia Parker Simpson identified Richard Slade as her rapist 28 years ago. Five days after DNA evidence recently freed Slade from the prison system in which he had spent his adult life, Alicia Simpson was found shot to death.
Almost everyone thinks Slade did it - who can blame them? - but Willie has his doubts. And when the full weight of the city's old money falls on him, trying to crush the story, he becomes even more determined to chase the thing that always seems to get him into trouble: the truth. That Richard Slade is his cousin and a link to his long-dead African American father only makes Willie that much more tenacious.
In the end Willie will be drawn back to the Philadelphia Quarry, where it all started so long agoand in whose murky waters the truth lies.

    A great tale
An author who knows the ends outs of Richmond, Va and is an excellent story teller. Locals know the site of the story. Was invited to use the Philadelphia Quarry this past summer.
    Like the first
This is my second of the Willie Black books. Like the first, it was an easy read with unexpected twists. Living in Richmond, I'm familiar with all the neighborhoods and haunts Willie frequents so that's fun!
    Starts Good, Ends Somewhat Predictably...
I got sucked into this book because the main character is witty and somewhat likable and the main premise of the book is interesting. I found the first half of the book to be very good but as the story evolved I felt like I knew what was going to happen and found myself just reading to get to the end and find out the details.
    Outstanding detective novel
Reading the NYT book review on Sunday and came across Marilyn Stasio's short blurb on this book. Got an Amazon sample and was hooked. Couldn't put it down. Ordered the book and whipped through it. Reminiscent of George Pelecanos' best work. Highest praise I can bestow. Good character development, highly humorous, and great story. Not the last book by Howard Owen I'll be reading.
    Not Much Character Development
Not enough character and relationship development. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters. It seemed like the parts were there for a good book, except there was little color to make it interesting.

When the minister and a young mother, both members of the same church, disappear without warning, the Reverend Doctor Olympia Brown is called in to help. She soon suspects a connection between the missing women and charismatic Pastor Markham from the church across the street. With investigative assistance from her best friend, Father Jim, and support from her beloved Frederick, Olympia discovers Markhams long and well-concealed history of sexual misconduct. When he sets his sights on Olympia, she knows the only way to stop this insidious predator is to catch him in the act, which could have deadly consequences.

Wahoo - Another Great Olympia Brown Mystery!
In this fifth of Olympia Brown Mysteries Series, A Predatory Mission, Judith Campbell presents us with yet another major social issue to ponder: that of a fundamentalist minister who sexually preys on women in his parish, neighboring parishes, and even extends his sexual power lust to online date matching... in this case, the predator being the charismatic Rev Jerrold Markham.
Rev Dr Olympia Brown, hired on a short term ministerial contract to heal an ailing parish, All Souls Church, located across the street from Rev Markham's independent church, is at her best sleuthing out why the previous All Souls minister mysteriously resigned and what caused a former All Souls Church member to disappear with her children in tow.
It is truly a joy be reunited with characters from Campbell's Olympia Brown Mysteries: Frederick, her very English suitor, Jim, her dearest friend and Roman Catholic priest; Laura, her out of wedlock daughter, and Miss Winslow, her 1860's house ghost -- each of them having their own life-path decisions to make.
All in all, Judith Campbell weaves a fascinating as well as thought provoking tapestry of theme/sub-themes with exquisite and often quite humorous dialogue.
Another Olympia Brown Mystery where the good Reverend turned detective
Another Olympia Brown Mystery where the good Reverend turned detective. There was just enough mystery to draw the breath in but not so much that it crosses into horror. This entire series is a must-read for any mystery buff!
Great Oage Turner, Human Insight Too
Always great page turners, Campbell's books offer insight into the vagaries of human character
    Enjoyable Read
I have only one complaint about the Olympia Brown stories - they're too short! I so enjoy 'visiting' with Olympia and the other characters.
The self-styled Sinister Minister tackles difficult subjects in a readable and entertaining manner - and the good guys always win! What could be better?
Style of mystery I like with Social Issues to consider
This is the style of mystery I enjoy with a lead character you can grow to love. As an added bonus, these stories explore important social issues related to an area where we are often vulnerable - our faith lives.

Length: 14 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-18-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 38 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Scott Turow, William Landay, and Nelson DeMille, Crime of Privilege is a stunning thriller about power, corruption, and the law in America - and the dangerous ways they come together.
A murder on Cape Cod. A rape in Palm Beach.
All they have in common is the presence of one of Americas most beloved and influential families. But nobody is asking questions. Not the police. Not the prosecutors. And certainly not George Becket, a young lawyer toiling away in the basement of the Cape & Islands district attorneys office. George has always lived at the edge of power. He wasnt born to privilege, but he understands how it works and has benefitted from it in ways he doesnt like to admit. Now, an investigation brings him deep inside the world of the truly wealthyand shows him what a perilous place it is.
Years have passed since a young woman was found brutally slain at an exclusive Cape Cod golf club, and no one has ever been charged. Cornered by the victims father, George cant explain why certain leads were never explored - leads that point in the direction of a single family - and he agrees to look into it.
What begins as a search through the highly stratified layers of Cape Cod society, soon has George racing from Idaho to Hawaii, Costa Rica to France to New York City. But everywhere he goes he discovers people like himself: people with more secrets than answers, people haunted by a decision years past to trade silence for protection from lifes sharp edges. George finds his friends are not necessarily still friends and a spouse can be unfaithful in more ways than one. And despite threats at every turn, he is driven to reconstruct the victims last hours while searching not only for a killer but for his own redemption.
    Critic Reviews:
"Crime of Privilege is not only a first-class legal thriller, it is an astute examination of our society and how we are corrupted by power and money. The rich are indeed different; they get away with murder. An absolutely engrossing read from beginning to end. Not only is it a well told story of crime and punishment, but also a finely nuanced tale of sin and redemption." (Nelson DeMille)
"Crime of Privilege is wonderfully written, and Walter Walker has a great talent, the God-given kind that cant be taught or learned or acquired, and the reader knows it from the first paragraph of the book. The characters are complex and interesting yet also emblematic of all the players in the class war, which is the stuff of all epic stories. I love the protagonist, and I also love the portrayal of the world of the very rich. There is something about the very rich that is hard to describe, but Walter Walker got them in the cameras lens perfectly." (James Lee Burke)

The rich get away with murder
You've seen this plot a million times. In fact, you've seen stories based on the family the novel obviously alludes to a million times. The "Gregorys" are a rich, politically connected Massachusetts family that does whatever it wants. A lot of good in the bigger sense...but a lot of amoral actions on a private level. The novel starts with one such instance -- the rape of a young woman by two of the family's sons.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times bestselling author Ridley Pearson is back with a heart-stopping new installment in the acclaimed international thriller series featuring John Knox and Grace Chu.
When an award-winning foreign journalist reveals the existence of an Amsterdam-based sweatshop known as a "knot shop" that employs and enslaves young girls as laborers, private security firm Rutherford Risk is hired by a philanthropist to find it and shut it down. David "Sarge" Dulwich, John Knox's former boss from their government contractor days, knows that Knoxs cultural knowledge, combat skills, and sympathy for the abused make him right for the job.
Joined by Grace Chu, whose more subtle skills for acquiring sensitive tech information help balance his improvisational style, Knox heads to Amsterdam in an attempt to dismantle the child labor operation and rescue the girls. In their way is a crime organization that has permeated the neighborhoods with goodwill, turning even the victims' parents against their would-be saviors. With enemies around every corner, Knox and Grace cant tell the good from the bad.

    Not his best
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Simplistic writing - slow story development - I have enjoyed other works by Ridley Pearson, including the other John Knox story, but this was rather painful
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Meh
Would you be willing to try another one of Todd Haberkorns performances?
No - the reader was the worst part of this - Several times, I was tempted to stop listening, but Ridley Pearson's previous books were pretty interesting, so I persevered - mistake...
    very slow
I really enjoyed the first one in this series.
this one was not so good-- very slow and
well I hate to say kind of boring

Hurley's Jimmy Suttle is a gem
What did you love best about Western Approaches?
Hurley's brings to life the Exmouth area. Jimmy Suttle character is well developed and well worth the following.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Western Approaches?
There are far to many to isolate just one - but I'd have to say his interviews with the prime suspects is well told.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Don't have just one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would if I had that kind of time.
    Any additional comments?
Now onto the next in the series and can't wait
Western APPOACHES??? - (Look at the cover)
There are a few series issues with this book and I wanted to really like it. The issue is that the name of the book on the Audible cover has a misspelling. It says "Appoaches" instead of "Approaches".
My next biggest issue with this book is that Jimmy Suttle doesn't even solve the crime! When I read a police procedural novel - I'd like for the detective to at least solve the crime. Another issue, there is no action in the book. It's just a story about people's lives with the husband getting up and going to work and the wife staying home with the baby and she's feeling abandoned etc. Blah blah.
I also didn't understand how Lizzie met Pendrick met one day and have the deepest connection which she is fixated on. He says he's in love with her one day after meeting her. For a while I thought that I was listening to the abridged version. I just found that to be stupid and unbelievable.
Lizzie and Suttle seem to have no concerns about their infidelities. It's just like another day and then at the end they split up. There is no real conversation between them about the fact that Lizzie wanted desperately to sleep with someone else and Suttle did sleep with someone else. After Lizzie's accident, I thought that Suttle and her would talk it out. She was telling him that she loved him and then they just split up.
Pendrick told Lizzie he was the killer and then Lizzie went and spent the night in his apartment riffling through his things. She is married to a police detective - wouldn't she know that she shouldn't touch anything? Where were the police? Very odd!
I would have liked it better if Pendrick would have taken Lizzie hostage and Suttle would have solved the murder and then had to rescue Lizzie.
The narrator is good, but he does make everyone talk in short clipped words and sentences. No one draws anything out. It's just a very quick "yeah" or "no".

    Publisher's Summary:
Now that Priscilla Halburton-Smythe has agreed to marry him, Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth can't imagine a more perfect life. There's not much crime in his remote Scottish village of Lochdubh, nothing much at all to do but fish, drink coffee, and slouch around. And now to spend time with lovely Priscilla. But his days aren't as tranquil as his dreams. For one thing, Priscilla's renovation schemes are driving him out of his cottage. Not to mention her ambitious plans for his career as a policeman away from Lochdubh.
This might be a good time to find out why Peter Hynd's arrival in nearby Drim was causing so much trouble. An attractive, unmarried man with an independent income would always attract attention in such a small place. But this time Hynd's arrival seems to have caused bitter rivalry among the women of Drim. Hamish finds their petty fights amusing and a clever excuse to avoid Priscilla and her schemes for a new electric stove (to replace his beloved woodburning appliance), a posh new bathroom, and virtuous nutrition. Amusing, that is, until death threats, physical abuse, and murder make statistical history in one of Scotland's most picture postcard-perfect towns.
    M. C. Beaton worked as a Fleet Street journalist. She is the author of the Agatha Raisin novels, the Hamish Macbeth series, and an Edwardian murder-mystery series. She divides her time between Paris and the Cotswolds, where she lives in a village very much like Agatha Raisins beloved Carsely.

    Members Reviews:
    Smoke Alarm
A beautiful old house is badly damaged by fire and three members of the same family perish in the blaze. A teenage boy â Jude â is the only survivor. Coroner Martha Gunn and DI Alex Randall feel there is something odd going on. The fire was definitely started deliberately and it seems odd that Judeâs father was conveniently absent on a business trip at the time.
But Martha and Alex will have to look to the past to find the answers as the prologue suggests. If you are afraid of fire and have nightmares about it then maybe this isnât the book for you as some of the scenes are likely to haunt you. I found this book just as compelling as the rest of the series. It is written in a low key style with believable characters and interesting motivations. I like the fact that personal lives are only gradually revealed â apart from Marthaâs â as this makes me want to read the next in the series to find out a bit more about Alex Randall.
This is the fourth book in the series and I recommend it to anyone who has read and enjoyed M R Hallâs Jenny Cooper series

    Members Reviews:
Not as good as the first, but still worth it
    Any additional comments?
I liked The Yom Kippur Murder. The book held my interest because there were two dramas enfolding at the same time. As Chris digs in to the victim's past, she learns about the lives of people impacted by the Holocaust. In the present, another drama is going on with the last remaining tenants in a NYC building. The characters are deep and draw you in. Chris occasionally got on my nerves, and there were a few times things that seemed unlikely occurred, but overall it held my attention. Like some other reviewers I was a bit surprised and not entirely satisfied at the developments in Chris and Jack's relationship at the end if the book, but still plan to continue the series.
    A nice mystery
This is a very good story with solid characters. I admit I bought the second book because I was interested in how the love story of the ex nun, Cris, would develop. That part of the story is brief and tasteful. The love story takes a back seat to the murder mystery, as it should. Both stories develop nicely and realistically. The plot and the mystery are solid and entertaining. I recommend the first two books and I will be reading the next in this series.
