    Choose narrator wisely!
Where does A Righteous Kill rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is the first book I have listened to by this author. I did enjoy the story and will continue with the series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Righteous Kill?
I enjoyed the interventions with Hero's family.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator has a British accent, but the main character is Hispanic. It is very unbelievable to listen to his thoughts and narration with a British accent. Unfortunately in my case, it detracted from the story. Besides that you have other characters with an Irish accent and a Russian accent. Makes things muddled for me.
The Book Cover Says it All
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I don't think this book or this author have any hope of earning 4 or 5 stars. The story is so trite and predictable that one doesn't even really have to listen to the whole thing to know exactly what happens. The protagonist is the stereotypical grizzled diamond-in-the-rough crime fighter guy who is won over by a sweet little victim with a heart of gold. The victim is, of course, gorgeous and virtuous, with long, long legs and the ability to orgasm several times. Hooray!! And she manages to be in peril and helpless at very convenient times - so our hero can swoop in and SAVE her. I think there was a kitten in danger of being run over by a car at some point, but I can't be bothered to listen any more. And the sex scenes...sheesh. I listen to mysteries because I like intrigue and sciency facts about solving said intrigues, but there is a LOT of pap about our hero, grizzled beard and all, amazing our sweet little victim with his hot throbbing dong. That's just fabulous, but I don't attend this genre for the bodice-ripping, thankyouverymuch - give me mystery, give me puzzles that are solved by smart people, give me odd scientific facts that crop up in the never-ending endeavors of criminals to commit crimes and not be found out, but for the love of dog, keep it in your pants!! This book is so obviously written by a man, with its weenie worship. I mean, look at the cover for goodness sake - you have your story right there. You know those paint by number paintings? This book is that. It's a write-by-number book.

Mike "primetime" Brown sizzles in this spin-off
A great book. Action packed from the start.
This book features Mike "Primetime" Brown, an ex-black ops leader who has been hiding away from life and drinking himself into a stupor since losing his men on a mission and taking the fall for the failure.
He is approached by Eva Salinas, the ex-wife of one of his fallen men, and challenged to find out what really happened with that mission and clear his team's name of the disgrace and blame that followed their failed mission in Afghanistan.
Mike contacts Gabe, from the Black ops series, and with Ava's help, the three of them begin to delve into the past, to find what really went down 8 years ago.
Gabe and Ava sizzled to me. Their chemistry was real and raw from the beginning. I kind of wished I had read the Black ops series first because they were mentioning how Gabe used to be, and refering to Mike back in the day, so I will go back and read that series...once I finish this one because it was so good.
Great writing, great flow, so cohesive. I loved it.
    Action, black ops and romance
This is the first book that I've listened to by Cindy Gerard. I had read a short story in a compilation which is why I looked for her name. She's got plenty of story to go with the romance. The sex scenes help carry the story--not just to graphically describe the sex over and over again.
Mike, the disgraced, PTSD suffering hero who finds out 8 years later that it may not have been his fault that half his team died in Afghanistan. Ava, the Latin beauty with a mysterious reason to come find Mike, finds herself in over her head. But soon they are both running from a killer who seems to have them in her sites.
Action packed, the story moves along. The narrator does a fine job with voices for the characters.
    Entertaining
I don't normally read contemporary romance; I prefer historicals. But I do read thrillers and this caught my attention - melding romances and thrillers. I wasn't disappointed.
I rate 3 stars as a perfectly adequate book and this was certainly that. There was enough tension - more than enough at some points - and the relationship between Mike and Eva was fun.
I think I may have found a new genre to explore.

    Publisher's Summary:
Adam Mansbach, the acclaimed #1 New York Times best-selling author of Go the F**k to Sleep and Rage Is Back, turns to a new tale of suspense, horror, and supernatural action in The Dead Run.
Wrongfully imprisoned in a Mexican jail, Jess Galvan, an outlaw-with-a-conscience, accepts a devil's bargain: transport a sinister package across the border in twenty-four hours for the jail's mythical - and terrifying - bogeyman El Cucuy. If Jess can make it across alive and give the iron box to cult leader Aaron Seth, he will be free and able to regain custody of his estranged daughter.
But, as Jess navigates a blighted desert full of deadly surprises, girls go missing on both sides of the border and bodies begin to surface. It's a deadly epidemic of crime that plunges small-town sheriff, Bob Nichols, into a monster of an investigation that he's not equipped to handle, especially when sixteen-year-old Sherry disappears.
An ancient evil has awoken in the empty wastelands along the border and now everyone - the innocent and the guilty alike - must face their deepest fears as epic myth and human malice combine to bring forth the end of the world as we know it.
With The Dead Run, acclaimed author Adam Mansbach mixes horror, the supernatural, and suspense to deliver a chilling, high-octane adventure.
    Members Reviews:
Gruesome fun - and a LEETLE sexist
I enjoyed almost all of this book, and I hadn't realized Mansbach was the genius behind "Go the F*** to Sleep" until I looked him up when I was halfway through. I love a gory little horror story, and this one pulls no punches at all. What I had taken to be a straight-up crime novel turned delightfully supernatural, and there was plenty of grim humor, likable characters and spunky dialogue. I'm glad to know that this is the first of a new series, and as soon as my credits renew I'll be sure to snag the next entry.
Now the bad news. I'm a 55 year old white woman (no, that's NOT the bad news), and I'm the first to admit that I never know when I supposed to be offended any more. But this witty horror novel referred relentlessly to something which niggles at me still.
Without spoiling anything, I can say that the story centers on a supposed Aztec legend featuring the blood of virgins. Many, many virgins get a very rough deal in this story - past and present. Excuse me, not JUST virgins. These have to be, and are presumed by the author, FEMALE virgins. Because, well, hymens, I guess.
The story consistently and without pause considers the Virtuous, Unsullied Female to be priced above rubies, and frequently suggests that a woman who's had sex is completely worthless to the Other Side. Another character in the novel is very decidedly NOT a virgin, but because he's a Man, he is also pronounced Virtuous, as long as he only kills in self-defense. It's painfully skewed.
It's also suggested several times that the worst thing that a MAN can experience is knowing that his daughter has been raped. Because then - apparently - she's no good to anyone anymore.
Okay, I'm still not sure how I feel about this. Honestly, I enjoyed the book very much, and I don't look to horror fiction for my moral or politically-correct compass.

Lord of the Flies Mixed with vampires+ Gov Corupt
Another good story by David Wellington, as I mentioned in headline he took a lot of different story lines put them in a blender and out comes a better than average story.
I enjoy the variety of characters, you are comfortable with his mainstay charactersJim Chapel and his on again, off again girlfriend...and his villains are unique fron saddest to super human.
The reader turned another great job
I think I like Captain Jim Chapel
He is sorta Joe Ledgerish. He's believable as a character & still likable. I'll read book 2. I liked his sidekick Julia and Angel & even the flight attendant! All strong women. What a smart author.
I LOVED this book! Simply one of the best!
I haved listed to the vampire trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. There is so much action and drama that its hard to put down. I found myself thinking about the story between times i was able to set time aside to listen to the story. Without going too much into a spoiler alert, let me say that the characters were drawn to such a way that when one character got killed, i felt justice was served in the way "he" died because of the horrible way he dispatched one of the characters. I really felt a tightening in my chest when the "driver" died.
I will be waiting for book 2 of the Jim Chapel Mission series or pretty much any book David Wellington publishes: I have become a true fan of David Wellington!
How much did I hate this book? A lot.
I'm shocked that people seem to like this book. I couldn't even finish it... getting about halfway through before finally giving up.
The main character has no development and seems like a cardboard cut-out. He has a prosthetic arm and for some reason the author is obsessed with it. At first I thought he was simply using the fake arm as some sort of analogy to Jim Chapel being a "broken" man, but in all honesty the arm is probably the most interesting character of of the entire book.
So our hero Jim Chapel... who as you will hear over and over is missing an arm, is for some inexplicable reason chosen as the ONE person to go flying all over the country looking for some virus-carrying mutants. The whole world ends if they infect anyone.

    A fresh spin!
I remember being at university and how I always afterwards wondered how on tv can people get a degree and play the entire time?
It drove me nuts. In this books the students actually does put in the time and I loved that.
Our main protagonist is a pre-med student with a problem. She keeps having nightmares. Not any old dreams, tragic murder scenes play off infront of her night after night.
While balancing study, friends, a social life and a brand new boyfriend she needs to figure out why she is dreaming of a serial killer and if she can do something about her dreams....especially once she knows that her dreams are reflections of what happens in the real waking world.
    A fun read!
The narrator did a pretty good job in making the characters come to life, each with a unique voice all their own!
    WaAr

The story was amazing! The characters were so hilarious and witty! The narrator did a fantastic job.
    good read
The stroy moved along at a steady pace. Some suspense I didn't figure out the bad guy which os unusual for me. I would recommend this to my friends. I cant wait to read the next book.
Awesome series! Paranormal meets romance meets YA
Would you consider the audio edition of Dream Student to be better than the print version?
The dream student series is about Sara, a young college student whose dreams reveal prediction of accidents that really happen. One of her dreams is about Brian, who eventually becomes her boyfriend.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dream Student?
I loved the moments when Sara solves the dream of the teen that is murdered.
What about Heather Jane Hogans performance did you like?
I thought Ms Hogan was spot on in voicing the characters. She made Sara sweet and vulnerable and Brian masculine yet endearing.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Just when she's really got her hands full with that, she's assigned a new property to take care of as part of her contract with the USDA. When a blood-soaked garment turns up among some things Sam has dropped off at the thrift shop, Sam recommends that they call the Sheriff's office. Deputy Beau Cardwell is a bit under pressure himself, as the Sheriff is so busy running for reelection that the office is understaffed. Together, Sam and Beau sift through the evidence and discover that the bloody coat leads to a far more complicated situation than a simple case of murder. Once again Sam calls upon the powers of the magical wooden box that came into her possession a few months earlier to help unwind the tangled threads of the case.

    Muffins, Mystery, Murder
The second in the Samantha Sweet series finds Sam opening her new bakery . . . and cleaning up a property for the USDA to help fund her venture . . . when a bloody coat is found in the donated clothing she's dropped off at the thrift shop (from the hoards of stuff left at the abandoned home), Deputy Beau Cardwell gets involved . . . Samantha is making new friends at her newly opened bakery . . . some in high places . . . while Beau fights with the sheriff, (who is running for re-election and too busy to solve the case of the bloody coat and see if there is a connection to the man found dead) . . . I enjoyed all the baking stories . . . but found the magic box and the unexplained "messages" almost put the book in another category . . . one bordering on the occult . . . still, all said, its a good story, good conclusion . . . but I probably won't continue the series unless the supernatural stuff subsides . . .
Wonderfully written and directed well! Magnetic.
My review title truly says it all. The narration was clear and loved Andrea's different voices.
great book as always. hard to put down.
loved it and will buy more of her books. great author. love her theme of a pastry store
Another Good One By Connie Shelton
The narrator is good at changing her voice for various characters, that really helps make a book better. Some are not so good in this realm... enjoyed hearing about all of the "goodies" she makes/bakes. Love the idea of that "little box".... hummm... keeps me downloading the next book and that's probably Connie's intention, think? lol
There's just enough of "the box" and a few mysteries to make it interesting and she has a good voice herself, throughout, good narrator, period!
Simple reading, really, but interesting and I don't have to sit down to listen, I can multi-task :-) I can listen and clean or cook at the same time. Can't do bookwork but I can do other things.
I did figure out one thing early on in the book and the killer about 1 hour prior to the writer "showing her hand" but still, it was interesting, listening to her tell about her shop and baking etc., somehow, just enjoyed that part too even though it wasn't "mysterious", go figure.

At an exclusive school somewhere outside of Arlington, Virginia, students aren't taught history, geography, or mathematics - at least not in the usual ways. Instead, they are taught to persuade. Here the art of coercion has been raised to a science. Students harness the hidden power of language to manipulate the mind and learn to break down individuals by psychographic markers in order to take control of their thoughts. The very best will graduate as "poets": adept wielders of language who belong to a nameless organization that is as influential as it is secretive.
Whip-smart orphan Emily Ruff is making a living running a three-card Monte game on the streets of San Francisco when she attracts the attention of the organization's recruiters. She is flown across the country for the school's strange and rigorous entrance exams, where, once admitted, she will be taught the fundamentals of persuasion by Brontë, Eliot, and Lowell - who have adopted the names of famous poets to conceal their true identities. For in the organization, nothing is more dangerous than revealing who you are: Poets must never expose their feelings lest they be manipulated. Emily becomes the school's most talented prodigy until she makes a catastrophic mistake: She falls in love.
Meanwhile, a seemingly innocent man named Wil Jamieson is brutally ambushed by two strange men in an airport bathroom. Although he has no recollection of anything they claim he's done, it turns out Wil is the key to a secret war between rival factions of poets and is quickly caught in their increasingly deadly crossfire. As the two narratives converge, the shocking work of the poets is fully revealed, the body count rises, and the world crashes toward a Tower of Babel event which would leave all language meaningless.

    Fasten your seat belt...
You are in for a wild ride with this near future science fiction thriller. One thing that defines this novel is movement and the pace in Lexicon is always brisk. The novel shifts quickly between time periods, locations, and points of view with many twists in the road. That almost breathless pace is a double-edged sword. It makes for a story that is exciting and there is never a dull moment. But the pace doesn't allow for the science fiction side of the tale to develop as much as I would have liked to see. The premise of using words as psychological triggers to control others has been used before, but Max Barry does have some nice new twists on the idea like the hypothesis that there might be a "machine language" for human beings - a base language that every brain uses to communicate internally and would therefore respond to if you could find those "bare words". But Barry doesn't ever quite slow the pace enough to really develop the concepts; just as one of these ideas starts to flower, we cut to an action sequence. So the sci-fi aspect of the story is relegated to mostly a plot device.
Most of the shifts between point of view were nicely done, but the plot does not unfold totally linearly and I found the shifts in time a bit confusing.

    Narrator was fabulous
Where does An Affair of Vengeance rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This narration was the best I've listened to so far. The accents were amazing. After a few minutes of listening I forgot I was listening to just one person. When I switched to reading the book I really missed the delightful accents the narrator brought to the story.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was great. I'm not much of a spy book reader so I'm not really qualified to address the book itself.
Have you listened to any of Hillary Hubers other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
    Not very good..
    Any additional comments?
Really quite boring. McCrea was likable but I can't stand a hero who shaves his head, nothing sexy about that at all. Evangeline, I didn't like too much. She was a little too macho for me AND sometimes TSTL. I can't see myself reading anything from this author. Sorry.
The narrator was good. I would listen to her again.
