Alison speaks with Laura Lippman, New York Times bestselling author of the Tess Monaghan series. Laura has a new standalone title that harkens back to some of the literary world’s essential noir. Entertainment Weekly called Sunburn one of "10 best new thrillers to read this spring,” and Stephen King tweeted that Sunburn is “Suspenseful as hell...with a cool James M. Cain vibe."

Laura Lippman was a reporter for 20 years, including 12 years at The (Baltimore) Sun. She grew up in Baltimore and is the daughter of the late Theo Lippman Jr., a Sun editorial writer who retired in 1995, and Madeline Mabry Lippman, a former Baltimore City school librarian.

Laura began writing novels while working full-time and published seven Tess Monaghan books before leaving daily journalism in 2001.

Laura’s work has been awarded the Edgar, the Anthony, the Agatha, the Shamus, the Nero Wolfe, the Gumshoe, the Barry, and other awards for crime fiction. If you are a fan of the genre like I am, or if you want to dive in, you are going to want to pause this episode at the beginning so that you can grab something and take notes. Laura joked during our interview that we could do a whole podcast on “What Laura’s Reading.” I think you’ll agree with me that we should make that podcast happen.

I should also mention that there are a few spoilers in this episode. Not about Laura’s latest book, but about Jane Eyre in particular. If you haven’t read the Charlotte Bronte classic, then you may want to fast-forward past our discussion of taking familiar stories like Jane Eyre and turning them on their heads a la Wide Sargasso Sea.

We're bringing you this week's episode on a Wednesday because our guest will be speaking in Atlanta tonight, and we don't want you to miss an opportunity to see him. Giles Milton, author of Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, will be at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library on March 7th at 7:00 p.m.

In this conversation recorded via Skype, Giles gives the background on his research into Section D (for Destruction)---what became Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE) unit. This was a secret section of the Department of War tasked with waging guerilla warfare against Hitler and the Nazis behind enemy lines in World War II.

Giles explains that when Winston Churchill became prime minister in 1940, he "plunged headfirst" into working directly with this secret organization. He was attracted to creative minds and solutions.

The book poses the question, "Is there any place for rules in the game of modern warfare?" Giles says he takes his cues from Colin Gubbins,

The U.S. tried to emulate the SOE. Giles tells us about their secret missions under the leadership of Col. William "Wild Bill" Donovan.

In the week following Gary Oldman's Oscar win for Darkest Hour, Giles and I also talked about our favorite actor portrayals of Winston Churchill.

Alison talks with Anthony Grooms, whose latest novel, The Vain Conversation, comes out March 1, 2018 from Story River Books. The book was inspired by Clinton Adams, a man who says that as a ten-year-old boy, he witnessed a group of white men lynch two black couples in Walton County, Georgia. Referred to as the Moore's Ford or Moore's Landing Lynchings, these 1946 murders are sometimes considered the last mass lynching in U.S. history. Grooms says that while his novel is dedicated to the victims and Clinton Adams, it is not about them--it's a work of fiction.
