I had a nice opportunity this past weekend to chat with the venerable Vasily Mahanenko, author of the Way of the Shaman series, Galactagon, and the Dark Paladin series. We talk about his new book Second Chance: Invasion book 1, where it takes place in the Barliona universe, and he even spills some secrets about the upcoming stories and this was cool, even talks about who that 2nd Tiefling in the story really is. We also talk about what it’s like to be a parent and have to balance writing with family life, his experience helping American LitRPG authors translate and publish their works in Russia, and his plans for future projects including visiting a convention in the U.S. Go give it a listen.

LitRPG Podcast 184 - Author Conversation - Vasily Mahanenko

Aug. 10th, 2019

Hello everyone, welcome to episode 184 of the LitRPG podcast. For the full show notes visit us at: https://litrpgpodcast.com/litrpg-podcast-184

I’m Ramon Mejia. I’m here to bring you the latest LitRPG news, reviews, and author interviews.

This week I’m talking to one of the men responsible for the popularization of LitRPG in both Russia and the United States.

The author of the best selling series The Way of the Shaman series, as well as Galactogon series, Dark Paladin series, and most recently a new Barliona series called : Invasion.

Welcome Vasily Mahanenko!

For the people that don’t know you, tell us a little about yourself and your background?

You just released a new book set in the same universe as Way of the Shaman, the Barliona Universe, Called Invasion. Tell me a little about it.

Does this story tie into the Way of the Shaman or are there any easter eggs?

I personally noted the character, Eredani, is on the prisoner program that hides his real identity but he’s actually a veteran player who knows about the Crafting skill exploit. Is he someone famous from the Way of the Shaman series?

Give us an insight into your main character, Brody West aka Kvalen. What does he do that is so special?

What are you working on at the minute?

-Co-Authored: Bard of Barlino series

-Edited: Dancing on the Block, by Marina Barinova

-Publishing in Russia: Cosimo Yap’s The Gam3 series. How did that go?

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

https://amzn.to/32S7URQ

Dark: Fearless Pioneer (Dark: Fearless Pioneer LitRPG book 1) (17:08)

Hello everyone, welcome to episode 180 of the LitRPG podcast. For the full show notes visit us at: https://litrpgpodcast.com/litrpg-podcast-180

I’m Ramon Mejia. I’m here to bring you the latest LitRPG news, reviews, and author interviews. I have 6 new reviews just for you.

New Releases and Reviews:

All Trades Book 1: Master of None (07:06)

Didn’t think it was LitRPG when I first saw it, but glad I gave it a chance. Good crafting and resource management aspects.

Score: 7.6 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2lg5ATj

Eight-Bit Bastards: Level Two (Eight Bit Bastards Book 2) (10:02)

Good retro gaming jokes and references but loses me as it loses meaningful RPG progression.

Score: 6 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2XN6uo0

Gloominess +1: Gleam of Darkness. A LitRPG Adventure: Book 1 (13:47)

Nice try for a dark story, but bad dialogue and uninteresting adventures made this boring.

Score: 5 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2Ji1lA4

Extension (Game World Book 1) (16:45)

Bad dialogue, bad action descriptions, maybe just a bad translation

Score: 4 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2LN1rBn

Eldritch Night: A Post-Apocalyptic Gamelit Adventure (The Dark Hierophant Saga Book 1) (19:51)

A good start that peters out on the RPG side mid and late story. Good if you like Eldritch horror.

Score: 6 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2XCdmbA

The Time Master (Interworld Network Book I): LitRPG Series (25:08)

Real life RPG story with time rewind powers. Good but not as good as I hoped it would be.

Score: 7.2 out of 10

https://amzn.to/2GEOaYw
