My visa is almost up, I’m finishing my last week at work, and I’m heading back to China in December. My colleagues at the stadium asked if I wanted them to help sponsor me to stay — but my gut said no. This episode I’m sharing why I turned down that opportunity (and why I did the same thing in Australia), and a bigger question I’ve been thinking about: do you follow your heart, or do you make the “smart” practical choice? There’s no right answer — but I know which one I am.

Spring has arrived in Christchurch — cherry blossoms have fallen and fresh green shoots are everywhere! We tried to go hiking but the weather turned grey, so we watched Forgotten Island instead (highly recommend!) But today I’m sharing my most epic hike ever: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the North Island — 20.2km, 9 hours, wind so strong I had to crouch down to crawl up the crater, scree so steep we basically slid down on our butts, my friend’s fear of heights nearly breaking her — AND we found out the mountain caught fire again right after we descended. Worth every step.

The Diamond Crabs arrived! A 2.8kg monster that required an actual hammer to crack open — and I ate the whole thing myself 🦀 Then let's talk about China's Golden Week holiday system and the notorious "tiáo xiū" (compensatory leave). This year 2026, Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep 25–27) fell perfectly on a weekend — a rare free holiday with no strings attached! But National Day (Oct 1–7) is 7 days with two "borrowed" days: you had to work on Sep 20 (Sunday) and Oct 10 (Saturday) to earn Oct 6 and 7 off. Oh, and Chinese phones send a special notification reminding you "tomorrow is a compensatory workday" — probably a uniquely Chinese feature!

I finally scored live crabs today — four of us split an order of four Diamond Crabs shipping down from Picton! 🦀 This episode I'm chatting about my deep love for seafood: the Marlborough Pacific oysters I buy every week or two in winter, how to eat black foot pāua (raw AND butter-seared), the crayfish I caught on a Kaikōura fishing trip, New Zealand scampi eaten raw after a 10-minute mineral water thaw, and sea urchin(kina) — which costs a fortune in Japan but you can pick freely here!

I was scrolling Xiaohongshu and saw footage from the World Humanoid Robot Games — and completely fell in love with a tiny 70cm robot called Mini-Pi (小派) that was competing while holding a little milk bottle 🤖 It collapsed from exhaustion mid-race and another robot stopped to watch. This episode we chat about Mini-Pi's story, China's booming humanoid robot industry, and why I believe robots will one day be as common as smartphones — and my little dream of owning one someday!

What's the biggest topic in China right now? Not a blockbuster, not a celebrity scandal — it's an animated film called "Niulai" (牛来) that opened to just 7,705 RMB at the box office, went viral for being "terrible", and then somehow hit 62 million RMB. Behind it: a young director and his 60-year-old mum who spent 5 years handmaking an 86-minute animated film with just two people. This episode we chat about this wild, strangely moving story.

Right before recording this episode I was heading out to Hagley Park to see the cherry blossoms — spring has arrived in Christchurch! 🌸 This episode is all about spring: from the blossoms at Hagley Park, to Japan's hanami picnic culture and the magical night sakura (seriously, the lighting transforms everything), to rapeseed fields in Sichuan and the famous cherry blossoms at Wuhan University. Oh, and quick update — neither Fiji nor Australia ended up happening, but that's okay!

Back in university I was completely addicted to Taobao — paying with Alipay felt like spending fake money, and I bought SO much stuff 😅 This episode we're chatting about China's three biggest e-commerce platforms: Taobao, JD.com and Pinduoduo (and the legendary "chop a knife" discount feature that drove every Chinese parent crazy). Plus why China's e-commerce is so advanced, and why I now actually prefer shopping in person — inspired by Japan's amazing little stores.

After 13 days straight of work shifts, I needed something wholesome to talk about — pets! 🐾 From my childhood Golden Retriever who was way too naughty, to the turtle I accidentally buried while it was hibernating (I'm so sorry), to my dream dog the Westie and why I now appreciate cats more than I ever expected. Plus: how China's pet culture has completely transformed in recent years and why so many young Chinese people are choosing fur babies over... well, actual babies.
