Our Bop Stop Anniversary Week continues with the second of two birthday shows, this one thrown in honor of yours truly.  If someone offers to throw you a birthday party and lets you choose the band, which band would you choose and what would you ask them to play?  Well, in my case, Beyoncé was double booked, so we went with the next best choice, Tommy Lehman and the SquadTet. And as you'll hear, they brought it with a set list curated by Tommy.

With the exception of just one song, they were kind enough to perform an arrangement of one of my favorites, Ellis Marsalis Twelve’s It.  Featuring Chris Coles on saxophone, Jordan McBride on bass, Zaire Darden on drums, Patrick Graney on percussion and Tommy Lehman on trumpet.

And from a July 22nd, 2023 performance, it's Tommy Lehman in the SquadTet Live at the Bob Stop.

Howie Smith is a legend in the Northeast Ohio jazz scene. From being a core member of The Bop Stop’s longstanding Jazz Unit in the mid aughts, to his work with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Howie has spent thirty years as a performer and educator.

For more than twenty five of those years, Howie taught a class at Cleveland State University called Jazz Survey, which was an introductory course for non-music majors. The final class of that course was an hour-long, completely improvised solo concert based around whatever was in the classroom at the time.

This week, Howie presents an example of this, which his students have called a ‘Concert in Progress.’

From December 10th, 2022 it’s Howie Smith, completely improvised and solo – Live at the Bop Stop.

Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by the Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction – music therapy and early childhood education since 1912.
