The Women’s Fund of Omaha addresses gender-based inequities in our community through collaboration that identifies, researches and creates solutions to advance, educate and fund lasting impact. There are four pillars of action - Economic Security, Freedom from Violence, Sexual Literacy (In Douglas County, rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among young people ages 15 to 24 are notably higher than they are in the state of Nebraska—or even nationwide!), and Women in Leadership.

The first Pops concert of the Omaha Symphony’s season is this weekend, Saturday (23rd) and Sunday (24th) at the Holland Center. Maestro Ernest Richardson is conducting the show which is called “The Streisand Songbook” with Ann Hampton Callaway. It is a celebration of the music of the great Barbara Streisand.

Attendance is critical for student success. Across Omaha Public Schools, families are encouraged to #StriveFor95, which means attending school on time at least 95% of school days.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. There’s an organization that is working hard to be an oasis for those who desperately need help to make a better life for themselves…And the children they may have.

Maestro Christopher Allen makes his Opera Omaha debut conducting Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues on October 15 & 17 at the Orpheum Theater. In a recent conversation with Mike Hogan on “Live & Local,” listeners get to know Christopher as he talks about the differences and similarities of conducting an orchestra versus an entire opera, his musical upbringing (and off-key violin solos), and the joy of making music all over world.

For young people looking for a direct way to get into high wage, high skill, high demand fields, the Career Center at Omaha Public Schools may be the answer. In fact, this week is Career Prep Week for the current students in the program. And this week culminates with a Career Fair on October 15th.

The Theodicy Jazz Collective, a liturgical jazz band, is the next guest on the Vesper Concert Series. The instrumentalists come from all over the U. S. and the vocalist, Anne Phelps, is a Hastings College grad and Nebraska native. Vesper Concerts is also bringing in the Hastings College Choir and Resound Choral Ensemble (from in-house at Presbyterian Church of the Cross) to perform Theodicy’s Canterbury Jazz Mass on Saturday night, October 9th.
