To remain faithful to God, we must commit ourselves to Him fully with humble and sensitive hearts.

When Jeroboam (northern king) was confronted with his sin, he was totally unrepentant and God didn’t show him any mercy. On the other hand, when Rehoboam (southern king) and the leaders of Judah were confronted with their sin, they humbled themselves, admitted that they had done wrong, and submitted themselves to God’s righteous judgment. So, God showed them mercy but He also reminded them why they should serve Him faithfully. Unfortunately, Rehoboam didn’t remain faithful because He hadn’t prepared his heart to follow the Lord continuously.

When Jeroboam was confronted with his sin, he hid and didn’t change a thing. When David was confronted with his sin, He asked for forgiveness and God gave it. David’s sin was washed away but Jeroboam’s damaged his relationship with God forever.

Jeroboam and the prophet sent to warn him both failed to listen to and follow God, and they suffered the consequences for it. Jeroboam completely disregarded God’s commands, and the prophet was deceived, but still disobeyed the Lord. He trusted what someone else told him that God said instead of doing what God told him directly. Jeroboam let his fear overtake his faith and made up his own set of rules, while the prophet put his faith in a man instead of God Himself. So, how can we keep from making the same mistakes?

Jeroboam fears losing the kingdom and makes his own worship system to keep the people from going back to the south and rejecting him as the king. Then, because this was against God, the Levites and other faithful believers rejected his system of worship and moved to the south to follow and worship the King of Heaven and earth instead.

If we want to grow in our faith, we must be aware of God’s hand in our lives. And if we want to remain faithful, we must know God and follow Him closely.

God prophecied to Solomon that when he died, the kingdom of Israel would be divided into two separate nations. God was going to take the northern tribes from his son and give them to his servant, Jeroboam. Then God fulfilled his promise exactly.

Solomon debunks the idea of karma by saying that we are not guaranteed good results when we do good things or bad results when we do bad things. We are responsible for our actions, and it is certainly better to be wise and righteous than to be foolish and wicked, but God is in control of the outcome, and there are some common graces we all receive. So, we should always try to do what is right, not so we will receive a certain outcome, but because we love and serve a sovereign God. Focusing on Him helps us do what is right and enables us to enjoy the gifts He has given us in this life.

Submission is a dirty word in our culture today, but that is largely because it is misunderstood. Biblical submission is not blind or passive. It is wise, intentional, and measured. It values relationships over resistance, persuasion over pressure, and influence over control. It avoids both extremes of blind submission and reckless rebellion without being manipulative. That is what Solomon is describing in this chapter.
