Today, will cover a few of the things I learned this week while on this path to being a lifelong learner. Instead of a MASTERCLASS episode, where I break a topic down with a deep dive, I will give the cliff notes, highlights of what I’ve learned this week and then I’ll attach the source from where the content came from in case you wanted to learn more.
In this episode we talk about:
1. Giving yourself a “license to sin.” In the book “The willpower instinct” by Dr. Kelly McGonigal, she references a common behavior that most of us do where in life we decide that we have been “good” in a certain circumstance, and in turn that gives us permission to be bad.”
Dr. McGonigal explores the concept of the "license to sin" and how being good can actually give people permission to behave badly. She explains that when people feel like they have been good and exercised self-control, they feel entitled to indulge in a reward or a treat, even if it is something that goes against their long-term goals or values.
2. We then tie that into an interview that neuroscientist Professor Andrew Huberman had on my favorite podcast “The Model Health Show” w/ Shawn Stevenson where they discussed how to achieve the holy grail of Life. And the holy grail of life, is when effort feels good! Now, no one gets to be in this state all the time, but he argues that when we push ourselves physically, we get multiple opportunities to go from the "I don't want to do this,"state, to “I’m going to do this for a purpose of growth, and doing it anyway and the science of benefiting from that mindset.
3. We talk about how in order to obtain your goals, it’s so important to not look at the surface level of why you’re going after that goal… and to take the time to dig into the DEEPER WHY… this begs the question… how do we find our own deeper why. So we are going to figure out how to really find your deeper why by asking the right questions. We are going to do this based on the book by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan titled “The ONE Thing.”
Everything in life comes down to the questions we ask. When we ask great questions, we find clarity, direction and momentum in the answers.
Of course, the opposite is also true. Ask the wrong questions, and we end up way off course, because if we’re asking the wrong questions, there can be no right answers. I think if you use the tools we talk about in this episode, you’ll really get a clearer picture as to why you are going after your goals, and with that increased clarity comes incredibly beneficial side effects which will help you toward success.
4. And we will finish the episode by answering a question that I get on a very frequent basis… what should my macro split be when I’m going for my fat loss goals? How many carbs, fats and proteins should I eat? Is it as easy as me giving you a percentage of each one and, that being that?? If you’ve listened to me for any period of time… I hope you know by now that the answer is definitely not that simple.
