You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Ephesians 5 verse 8 says this. Before you knew Christ, you were darkness. Not just in darkness. You were darkness. Your whole being was enveloped in spiritual darkness. But when you came to Christ, everything changed. You were translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. You are now light in the Lord. And because you are light, you are called to walk as light. My dear friend, light has certain properties. Light exposes what is hidden. Light guides those who are in darkness. Light brings warmth and life. Light dispels darkness. As a child of light, you have these same properties. Your life should expose the darkness of sin. Your life should guide others to Jesus. Your life should bring warmth, life, and truth to a dark world. You are not called to blend in with the darkness. You are called to shine brightly.Think about Jesus. He said in John 8 verse 12, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." Jesus is the ultimate light. He exposed the darkness of the religious leaders. He guided the lost. He brought life to dead souls. And He said in Matthew 5 verses 14 through 16 that you are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. You are called to let your light shine before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.Think about John the Baptist. John 1 verses 6 through 8 say that John was sent from God to bear witness of the light. He was not the light himself. He was a witness to the light. John lived a life that pointed to Jesus. He lived in the wilderness. He preached repentance. He baptized. Everything he did was designed to point people to the coming Messiah. John was a faithful witness to the light.Think about the early church. They lived in a dark Roman world filled with idolatry, immorality, and oppression. But they shone as lights. They loved one another. They cared for the poor. They were pure and holy. Their light was so bright that it was said of them, "See how these Christians love one another." Their lives as children of light attracted others to the gospel. So how do you walk as a child of light? First, walk in truth. Light and truth go together. Do not walk in deception, lies, or half-truths. Be a person of honesty and integrity. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Truth attracts the light. Deception belongs to darkness.Second, walk in purity. Darkness is associated with sin. Light is associated with holiness. Separate yourself from the sinful practices of the world. Do not participate in the works of darkness. Instead, expose them by living a pure life.Third, walk in love. First John 2 verses 9 through 11 say that whoever loves his brother abides in the light, but whoever hates his brother is in darkness. Love is the evidence that you are walking in the light. When you love others sacrificially, you reflect the light of Christ.Fourth, walk in witness. Let your words and actions point others to Jesus. You are a light in your workplace, your neighborhood, and your family. Do not hide your light. Let it shine. Share your faith. Live righteously. Love generously. Be unmistakably a child of light.Fifth, walk in fellowship with other children of light. First John 1 verse 7 says, "If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another." Do not isolate yourself. Walk together with other believers. Your light combined with theirs creates a brighter witness. What this produces in your life is a powerful witness to the world. When you walk as a child of light, people notice the difference. The darkness in your workplace is dispelled by your presence. People are drawn to the light in you. They may not understand it, but they are attracted to it. Your life becomes a beacon that guides others to Jesus. You fulfill your calling as the light of the world.Let us pray. Father, I thank You that I am no longer darkness but light in the Lord. Help me to walk as a child of light. Help me to walk in truth, purity, love, and witness. Let my light shine before men so that they may see my good works and glorify You. Do not let me hide my light. Use me to dispel the darkness around me. I want to be a faithful witness to Jesus, the true light. Let my life point others to Him. In Jesus mighty name, amen.
