  • In the Mouth of Madness (1995)

Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon, Dead Calm) stars as John Trent who is an insurance investigator tasked with finding a reknowned horror writer named Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow) who has apparently disappeared....and just as his latest best-selling novel named "In the Mouth of Madness" has hit bookshelves all over the world.  Also causing concern is a growing number of readers of this book who have suddenly gone violently mad.  So John embarks on this fact-finding mission with a book editor named Linda Styles (Julie Carmen) and once they arrive at a  mysterious town in New Hampshire where they suspect Sutter Cane might be hiding....let's just say that things start to go a bit....MAD. :o This supernatural horror thriller came out just over thirty years ago and was directed by the Master of Horror himself.....John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York) and it might even be one of his more underappreciated gems!  The supporting cast also includes John Glover, Bernie Casey, David Warner, and Charlton Heston.

  • The Invitation (2015)

Will (Logan Marshall-Green) has been invited with his girlfriend Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi) to a special dinner party being hosted by his ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard) and her new husband David (Michiel Huisman) at their home.  Once there, he is able to able to reunite with a few long-time friends PLUS a VERY flirtatious house guest of the hosts named Sadie (Lindsay Burdge).  Also visiting is a mysterious tall, intimidating gentleman named Pruitt (John Carroll Lynch) with some disturbing stories to tell AND once they're there....almost everyone is extremrely physically affectionate....hmmmmm.  Needless to say, this is NOT your typical dinner party as traumas are revisited, old wounds are re-opened, and much wine is drunken by the guests.  Ten years ago, director Karen Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer's Body, Destroyer) delivered one of the more tense and unsettling thrillers of recent years so it's time to RSVP and respond to....The Invitiation. :o

  • One Battle After Another (2025)

This story mainly focuses on a former revolutionary father (Oscar-Winner Leonardo DiCaprio) and his daugther (Chase Infiniti) in the midst of an ongoing revolution when suddenly both are on the run from a determined government agent (Oscar-Winner Sean Penn) who initially arrested their former revolutionary wife/mother (Teyana Taylor) sixteen years prior.  But of course this new highly acclaimed satirical political thriller/domestic drama from Multiple Oscar-nominee (but not yet winner) Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, The Phantom Thread, Licorice Pizza, Magnolia) is about MUCH more than that....or is it?  Regardless this film almost defies genre and also co-stars Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Wood Harris, and Alaina Haim among several others.  Let's see if this lives up the hype....

  • Jacob's Ladder (1990)

This psychological horror thriller from director Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, Flashdance, Unfaithful) takes us through the horrific journey of Vietnam vet Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) who is now working as a postman in New York City and starts seeing various horrific visions wherever he goes....could they be demons?  He doesn't know but they start getting worse and worse, even blending into his everyday life....could they be premonitions resulting from his PTSD?  Neither he knows nor his girlfriend (Elizabeth Pena) and the only person who can apparently provide him with some comfort is his personal chiropractor played by Oscar-nominee Danny Aiello.  Eventually Jacob does get more answers as to where these visions might be coming from but those only result in more questions.....this mind-bending tale garnered a following throughout the '90's as a result of some genuinely disturbing imagery featured throughout.  It also features a pretty stacked cast including Matt Craven, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Jason Alexander, Eriq LaSalle, Ving Rhames, and Macauley Culkin.

  • Reversal of Fortune (1990)

Based upon true events, this legal drama focuses on the appeal process of Claus von Bulow (Jeremy Irons who won an Oscar for this role) after he was convicted for the attempted murder of his wife Sunny von Bulow (Glenn Glose) who was in a prolongued coma during this process.  His lead representation was Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) who lead an extensive team of his own legal students towards crafting a new defense for Claus.  The Von Bulows were extremely wealthy socialites living in Rhode Island and as the story progresses, we delve further into their twisted world as Dershowitz digs further into both of their pasts.  The screenplay was co-adapted by the real-life Dershowitz from his own novel recouting all of these events named, "Reversal of Fortune."  As directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Barbet Schroeder (Single White Female, Barfly, Our Lady of the Assassins), this film ended up being way more entertaining than any one could have expected and has endured over the past 35 years since its initial release as a colorful, quotable, and often funny tale about the dark side of high society.  Just HOW entertaining is it?    You have no idea.....

  • Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

This film is based upon the true story of an attempted bank robbery occuring in Brooklyn, NY in 1972 which eventually became a prolonged hostage situaion and at the center of it was Sonny, a troubled soul who gets in way over his head.  Sonny is played by Oscar-winner Al Pacino (The Godfather Trilogy, Heat, Scent of a Woman) and the film was directed by the late, great LEGEND....Five-time Oscar-nominee Sidney Lumet (Network, 12 Angry Men, The Verdict) smack in the middle of sterling '70's runs for both actor AND director!  And the film itself become a phenonenon....not only a box office hit and an acclaimed Oscar contendor (six nominations including Best Picture and Best Director) but also one of the more influential crime drama's of the '70s AND one of the quintessential New York movies.  It's a unique story taking several unexpected turns and is at various points tense, funny, and sad.  This modern classic which about to turn 50(!) also co-starts John Cazale, Penelope Allen, Chris Sarandon, Sully Boyar, Lance Henricksen, James Broderick, and Charles Durning.

  • After Hours (1985)

Forty-years ago, Oscar-winning master Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Killers of the Flower Moon) directed his second dark comedy in a row (after The King of Comedy) with this quirky New York story which takes place almost entirely during one crazy night.  The whole story centers on Paul played by Griffing Dunne (An American Werewolf in London, My Girl, Dallas Buyers Club) who's just a lowly word processor by day but late one night, he decides to meet up with a mysterious, beautiful woman named Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) in the Soho district.  When he arrives at her apartment, she's at first not there so he ecounters her very strange, forward roommate (Linda Fiorentino)....eventually some one dies....and things just get stranger from there as Paul finds himself trapped in this ONE part of Manhattan unable to find his way home.  The stacked cast for this cult classic also includes Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Will Patton, John Heard, Cheech Marin, and Tommy Chong.

  • Hackers (1995)

    HACK THE PLANET!

Thirty years ago, that was the catchphrase for a high-energy youth culture movie focusing on a diverse crew of good-looking, well-dressed, "teenage" hackers in New York City.  All these kids wanna do via modems and computers is to have fun....until they discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus which eventually result in an ecological disaster.  Directed by Iain Softely (Backbeat, K-Pax, The Skeleton Key), this techno-fueled romp eventually became a cult classic powered by its danceable soundtrack (Massive Attack, Prodigy, Orbital) and its cast of up-and-comers including Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Laurence Mason, and Matthew Lillard.  So let's rewind back to a specific time AND place....when the only options available for enterprising youth....were to Boot Up or Shut Up!

  • Caught Stealing (2025)

Acclaimed Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Whale, The Wrestler) returns to the big screen with what MIGHT be his most audience-friendly caper yet....this is the story of a burned-out ex-baseball player named Hank (Oscar-nominee Austin Butler) who unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival of late '90's New York City.  Upon doing his neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) a favorite while he goes out of town, Hank soon has various unsavory characters who come calling....and the only people who can apparently help him are his long-suffering girlfriend/medic Yvonne (Zoe Kravitz) and NYPD Detective Roman (Oscar-Winner Regina King) who's on the case.  Also along for the ride during this increasingly violent crime comedy/drama are Griffin Dunne, Bad Bunny, Action Bronson, Carol Kane, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D'Onofrio.

  • Se7en (1995)

The premise is almost deceptively simple: two police detectives - a rookie and a veteran - hunt a serial killer around an unnamed city who has been who has apparently been using the seven deadly sins as his motives for each victim, each one also displayed at the murder scene to signify that one particular sin.  Of course as directed by three-time Oscar-nominee David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, Gone Girl), it became a highly influential phenomenon.....a grisly horror classic featuring one of the most talked-about gut-punch endings of all time.  It also helped that it starred two movie stars at the peak of their powers: Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman as the veteran Detective Somerset and Oscar-winner Brad Pitt as the rookie Detective Mills.  Plus Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow as Tracy Mills....AND Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey as John Doe.  Now approaching this film's thirtieth anniversary, let's join our two intrepid detectives on the trail to find out........WHAT'S IN THE BOX. :o
