Living for the Cinema

What if forty years ago, a brilliant filmmaker (Brian DePalma) directed one of America’s biggest stars (John Travolta) in a very timely, well-crafted thriller involving surveillance….and nobody came??  That’s the story of this film which has gratefully garnered a cult following and a reappraisal from many film-lovers and critics since then.

The actual story is of a sound effects man, played by Travolta, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time to witness a tragic accident….or was it?  He saves one woman’s life (Nancy Allen) but as they team up to find out what actually happened, both of their lives become endangered.  John Lithgow plays a homicidal killer on their trail…

M. Night Shyamalan – the director of The Sixth Sense, Split, Signs, and Unbreakable - once again takes the audience on a wild ride through mystery and horror.

This time, he’s doing it on a remote beach resort where our protagonists start to experience “changes” and predictably, chaos ensues – Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Alex Wolff, and Thomasin McKensie play a family at the center of this chaos.  Has Shymalan delivered for us another film that’s genuinely scary or frighteningly bad?  Let’s find out!

Happy 30th Anniversary to this tale of an undercover FBI agent and a surfing bank robber thrust together through fate – Keanu Reeves plays the FBI agent and the late great Patrick Swayze plays the bank robber.  Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow directs them alongside Gary Busey, John C. McGinley, and Lori Petty in one of the more quotable action films in cinema history.

WARNING - LANGUAGE

Ten years ago, this movie was hyped up as “The Female Hangover” and gratefully, it turned out to be so much more than just a raunchy, gross-out comedy.

This was the break-out movie for the new comedy mega-star Melissa McCarthy – a role that she received an Oscar nomination!  And she was only a supporting character amidst a stacked cast of gifted comediennes including Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Maya Rudolph – Paul Feig directed this loving tribute to female friendship and Wilson Phillips.

Stephen Soderbergh, the director of Out of Sight, Ocean’s 11, Erin Brockovich, Magic Mike, and too many other notable films to list directs this HBO Max movie with an amazing cast including Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Julia Fox, Ray Liotta, and quite a few others!

He has returned to the crime genre focusing on an absurdly twisted heist taking place in 1950’s Detroit with no shortage of twists and double-crosses. Does one of our greatest living directors still have the chops?  Find out with my latest review!

35 years ago one of the Greatest Sci-Fi Action Films and Best Sequels of All Time was released.

THIS time, it’s WAR. Ripley returns to LV-426 to take on the chest-bursting monsters that haunt her nightmares, but this time she is bringing along the Colonial Marines!

James Cameron directed Sigourney Weaver in this rare genre performance to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars.

Coinciding with the release of Black Widow (the first new film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be released in two years) it seemed like the right time to revisit this HUGELY successful sequel which capped (pun intended) off much of the franchise just a couple of years ago. Let's examine what works and what doesn’t work about the conclusion of The Infinity Saga.

Happy 30th Anniversary to one of the most acclaimed and iconic movies of the '90s.

This coming-of-age drama took theaters by storm with some of the most up-and-coming actors of its time.  Cuba Gooding Jr., Larry Fishburne, Ice Cube, Angela Bassett & Regina King to name a few.  This neighborhood's values cannot compete with the booming drug and gang culture in this South Central Tragedy.

WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie which included in this podcast.

This 4th of July, we discuss this Revolutionary War epic directed by Roland Emmerich who also directed Independence Day….but is this movie patriotic?  Mel Gibson stars in this tale of war and revenge... Happy Independence Day!

One of the most quotable comedies of all time just turned forty!

This movie is directed by comedy legend Ivan Reitman who would give us Ghostbusters a couple of years later.  This movie also stars two comedy legends – Bill Murray and Harold Ramis – as two shlubby dudes who decide to join the army to be all that they can be before they turn 30.

How does the humor hold up?  Is it actually as subversive as it seemed at the time?  Let’s enlist and find out!
