This week we commit to our season of prayer and fasting and fellowship. If there was ever a time in our nation's history, now is the time for the church to re-commit to prayer and fasting and holy living. God tells us our first priority should be to cultivate a powerful love that motivates a consecration and overflows into our world. Today we invite you to commit to our 21 days of fasting and 21 days of fellowship. We will look at one of the heroes of the Old Testament to show us how he prevailed in prayer to change his nation. We were so excited to bring our original production of A Christmas Noir this weekend! This year's Christmas Program was a creative parody of three detectives from the Wiseman Brothers Detective Agency, looking for the Christ child. Our kids worked very hard during all the uncertainty of this pandemic. As we finished our "Pro-Humanity" series, we looked at three ideas, attitudes and actions that come from the corrupted human heart. These three: racism, pornography and abortion all de-humanize people. Jesus rebuked his disciples for creating an Us vs. Them mentality within their group. They even went so far as to want to burn down the city that rejected them. Jesus said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village. You were made for eternity. When your parents got together it was likely, that far from the forefront of their conscious mind, was the fact that they just made something that would last forever. You were made for forever. Your soul will not die.   Where you anchor your eternity will determine your ultimate destiny because it will shape your decisions today.   Any idea that claims to promote human flourishing without taking into account eternity may be wise for a moment but foolish forever.   There has been a steady loss in belief in life after death correlating with an increase in the belief that we are simply our brains. This belief says that we are simply material beings.   Either in the beginning dirt, or in the beginning God. What is the best explanation for our soul? If the history of the world is simply the story of rearranged chunks of matter then how do we account for the immaterial part of us?  The fundamental reality is a conscious soul: God himself. This weekend we continued our "Pro Humanity" series by looking at Paul's encounter with the Athenian philosophers. He engaged them about an "unknown god" the Athenians worshiped. Athens was a pluralistic society. Every idea, nationality, religion was represented: Jews, God-fearing Gentiles, Epicurean philosophers, Stoic philosophers. Each had their answers to the big questions of origin, identity, meaning, morality, and destiny. We live in interesting times. Yet God has you here for this moment in history. He chose you to make a difference for him in this season. As our culture moves further away from God know that the church was made for these moments. First, we must reckon with our distraction and apathy. Our passion and love for God must be primary in our lives. Second, we must become people of prayer. In a prosperous society, it's easy to become reliant on our abilities rather than the Lord. Third, we must love radically and go out of our way to love well. Fourth, we should look to walk differently than the world. Righteousness will show that we are different. We cannot push for external change if we are not first internally changed. We cannot adopt the immoral practices of the world and expect to change it. This is our moment.
